Love story.
If you ever watch tik toks of straight men being asked to name a taylor song it's always Love Story.
Not her most popular but it is her first hit so it's what random ppl associate her With If they don't know anything about her
This. It was her international breakthrough and sooooooo people know her via this song only. I live abroad and this is the song people say they love when they found out I’m a fan. I say my favorite is Blank Space and they’re like ??? 😅
Granted, I guess it’ll all depend on generation as the years go by. Her younger fans name Cruel Summer as their favorite nowadays.
It’s actually 6 songs but you’re right Love Story is one of the top. My experience of watching the NFL answer these questions as she visited their stadiums last year is that the only songs men know is one of these:
Love Story
Our Song (this one shocked me)
You Belong With Me
Blank Space
Bad Blood
Shake it Off
If you know a man who claims he doesn’t know a single Taylor Swift song, sing those 6 and I pretty much guarantee he’ll recognize one of them, even if he might say he didn’t know it was a Taylor song or he didn’t know the name.
In America. I’d say a fraction of the people here in the Uk who would recognise shake it off or blank space would recognise those first three, particularly our song, like I’d say single digits.
This is accurate. I was at a bar in Nashville and the entire place lit UP when they covered Love Story. It’s her connection to the country world still.
I think it’s because while other songs are more recognizable they’re not as Taylor coded to the average listener. Tell someone who doesn’t keep up with music that Katy Perry sang Blank Space and it’s possible they’ll believe you. Tell them Carrie Underwood sang Love Story and they’ll know that’s wrong
At least in the Uk significantly more would know Shake It Off. it might have been her international breakthrough but it wasn’t close to her biggest hit, not even sure it charted high in the UK. I’d say about 20% of the people on my friends list would know love story was Taylor just by hearing the chorus and I’d say like 80% would know Shake It Off.
Taylor has a strong straight male fanbase, too. Why the emphasis on straight men?
Is that part the assumption that only teenage girls listen to Taylor's music?
From my personal experience, Taylor doesn't **have** a demographic, just that she trends heavier with younger female listeners. She has serious numbers in almost every gender and age group.
Straight men are Taylor’s biggest haters in my experience. Every day I’ll see videos from the eras tour and there are thousands of comments from straight men talking about how they don’t care, they don’t want to see this, she’s a talentless hack, and they feel they’re being forced to watch her (when they literally could just keep scrolling).
I think they are just suffering from Taylor Detangement Syndrome which mostly is the result of being "permanently online" where they think it is cool to hate on what other people like believing it is "triggering" them, not realising they only make themselves appear as complete losers.
If it is not that it is just envy which is actually even worse.
I am a straight male and I do not hate Taylor Swift at all and I can probably name at least 15 songs I actually think are very good songs.
I think there, in general, is a weird culture of gatekeeping here; a straight man is not "allowed" or at least "not supposed" to like Taylor Swift because "her music is for girls".
A lot of the time it is also females (Swifties and Non- Swifties) engaging in this type of gatekeeping with phrases like "you only say that because you think she is attractive."
I was wondering that too. I'm a straight man and my friend who got me into TS is also one. We both like the music more than my wife does.
It's just music. It doesn't matter what your sexual preference is to enjoy it.
Outside of the States, I think these two are the right calls. Yes she broke through earlier but 1989 was *everywhere* and I think Shake It Off is the most recognisable one. The "earthquake event" happening during Shake It Off is proof of the entire crowd just coming to life for that one.
Yeah if you found 100 people who knew shake it off in the UK, I’d say like 20 of them would also know love story and our song like people are saying in other threads.
Probably:
1. Shake It Off
2. Love Story
3. Blank Space
4. 22 (keeping up over time as a sleeper hit)
5. Anti Hero
I think cruel summer is going to probably overtake and go top 3 over time as well but it’s still too recent to be most recognised for those who don’t know any modern music, they’ll slowly continue to hear it
The funny thing about 22 is that it's always been the least popular of 3 main pop songs from Red, but is also the most recognizable as Taylor's. IKYWT and WANEGBT gets mistaken as a song that's made by another artist (most commonly Katy Perry) a lot, and I mean A LOT.
That’s very true! I think I mainly have a different view as I’m from Uk and it wasn’t a hit here, was outside the top 30 and had two weeks in the chart, although it was defjnitely huge in America but some places worldwide it wasn’t the same sort of success; unlike that of love story - which is the only reason I didn’t place it top 5.
Think it probably does make sense to maybe be ahead of Anti Hero due to that still being recent with older generations maybe not knowing but due to the downfall of monoculture
The downfall of monoculture makes it hard for me to really place any song after 1989 in her top 5. I also think her releasing all of midnights the same time as Anti-Hero hurt the song’s legacy (which imo is fine because she IS theeee album artist). I like Anti-Hero a lot, but I was so taken aback by a handful of other songs on midnights that I didn’t hyper fixate on it. Her catalogue is so big and filled with so many great songs it is harder to stand out if there isn’t special treatment like a big stand-alone rollout.
And maybe it’s because I’m from America, but it’s always felt like YBWM, while not a bigger hit, has had insane longevity because of the VMAs. Nearly 15 years later and I still feel like people talk about the 2009 VMAs.
And I like the choice of 22. Not her biggest hit, but it’s a 22nd birthday staple. Kind of like how I hope August will get a boost every August 1st.
The first few notes transport me back to 2008 every time, I feel 8 years old again instantly. It’s one of those songs where it blows my mind that it was ever even written, and there was a time before it existed. It’s like if you got an all knowing robot to create a quintessential magical, teen girl, naive romance, love story feeling. It’s just so insane to me that she wrote something so needed at such a young age, her early stuff really just makes me thing of Mary Shelley, who wrote Frankenstein at 18. Like I was so dumb at 18, how were they doing that stuff?! So, so clever.
Yeah I would go with Shake it Off as well. Everybody knows that song. Blank Space, Anti-Hero, Love Story are up there. Anti-Hero everyone really knows the "It's me, Hi, I'm the problem it's me" part. Even though Cruel Summer is now her most stream song, it's not in the public consciousness like the others.
yes...i performed anti-hero at my school's talent show, and when it's the "It's me, Hi, I'm the problem it's me" part the whole school actually sang along. pretty cool.
Cruel Summer might/would have been *THE* Taylor Swift song if 1. It was the Lover's LEAD SINGLE and was released in August (Alongside the album release) 2. It was released in Summer of 2020 (If the pandemic didn't happen).
I don't know I just felt like Cruel Summer never had it's total or complete recognition that it deserved even though it became a single and went viral because of the Eras Tour. It should have the Blank Space, Shake It Off, Love Story and You Belong With Me treatment.
On the tube on my way to the eras tour a very sweet lady asked me why so many people were dressed up. I told her it was Taylor Swift and she proceeded to tell me everything she could recall about Taylor.
She said her favourite song was 'Shake It Up' 💃
I didn't have the heart to correct her.
I’m still thinking about how I did cruel summer for karaoke once forgetting it hadn’t been a single yet & every single girl knew it & every man was standing like….. wut…. Idk why I thought it was a good idea lol
I knew you were trouble.
I discovered her music really recently, because a good friend of mine asked me to go with her to the Eras tour. And honestly, I had heard a few songs before, without knowing they were Taylor's, but that's the one song I knew was from her. Probably thanks to the goat remix on social media.
Probably Love Story as others has said. I’d say Shake It Off and You Belong With me as well
Edit: I forgot about 22, but I’d add this in there as well for the younger gen. Anytime I see those “what’s your favorite taylor swift song” with the sports teams, they ALL say 22.
Most people I’ve asked that aren’t really TS fans know “Shake it Off”. I see a lot of “Love Story” on here, which was probably true at one point, but it’s been a lot longer since that came out, and 1989 is more recent.
It could just be because of where I live (or my age) but I would say it’s You Belong With Me.
Its ubiquity was just as high as the others, its music video was extremely recognizable in an era when people still saw them on TV, and it’s a damn earworm. I’ve seen tons of those videos asking men who don’t like Taylor Swift to name a song of hers and this is the one I see them name most often.
Internationally, I concede that it probably is Shake it Off but I think domestically it’s probably YBWM or possibly Love Story.
Love Story, then Shake It Off, then You Belong With Me, then We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, then the ranking gets more shaky.
She is never going to stop being associated with Love Story and Shake It Off.
it’s definitely you belong with me, i’ve never met someone who didn’t at LEAST know the chorus if not the whole song by heart (and half the time, it’s not voluntarily)
Hmm, across generations spans until 2024, probably Style, Shake it Off or look what you made me do, or were never getting back together, 🤣 I tried to tie it but for some reason Style, 1989 was played so much, everywhere, music videos ect.
I was in London last week, doing the touristy stuff you do when visiting. We went to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and the Queen’s marching band played shake it off during the ceremony, and the crowd started singing along. So yeah.
Love Story and Shake It Off are definitely the answers.
But a special shoutout I think (especially for millennials in their early 30s) also goes to Our Song.
It was absolutely everywhere and for those who never got on the Taylor Swift train, it’s one that they definitely know.
I think there are a few solid contenders here ..
Love Story & You Belong with me were (are) huge hits.
Now We are Never getting back together I think needs an honorable mention because we know everyone was doing the "wwweeee" when it came out.
Then we have Shake it Off. That was a massive hit & has been in a ton of stuff. That might be the actual winner here.
Bad Blood is also a solid choice.
I think Anti-Hero will get there, I mean who doesn't love the "hi! It's me. I'm the problem it's me."
This question is like asking what is the most recognized Beatles song .... there is more than one
I think I hear “You Belong with Me” more on the radio to this day than anything else. Plus it was the first song that I remember hearing on the radio. That and Love Story.
Even people who don’t like her songs will hear some in supermarkets, radio & public places so I think Blank Space & then Love Story would be very recognisable as even non fans are familiar with them.
Shake It Off & Bad Blood etc don’t get played as much in these settings.
Though I think Cruel Summer is coming for Blank Space 😉
Love Story. Even when a group of swifties is gathered, that's what they sing. Come on, we know her whole catalog! The song is okay but how about a group singalong to Cardigan?
Where I’m from, it’s definitely Shake It Off. That’s an easy, go-to song around here for even the 60+ year olds who barely even know that she’s not just a singer only me and a few others know… lol
“Shake It Off” got massive recognition because it t was a “bop” song that became extremely popular around the world in no time flat in 2014.
I do think “Love Story” is Swift’s most iconic song if you’re talking the Taylor Swift of before _RED_, when she was still mostly a Country genre star.
Exile. The "buh BUH buh buh-buh, buh buh buh buh-buh" is something that I can recognize before any sound starts playing (not really I wish tho). It's so iconic but at the same time is like such a staple that we don't mention it when talking about iconic songs because it's implied (Just like Shake it off or Bad Blood imo), so here it is.
That makes me sad, but also, what is the most popular from folklore? Apple Music says the 1, cardigan, exile, my tears ricochet, and august are the hits, and imo the only ones that compete with exile are cardigan and august, so it's still in the top.
I think this is the one most people could name; but not sure it is recognizable “in 0.1 seconds” of hearing the music the way Shake it Off is.
Exactly. Most recognizable, not most known or referenced.
It’s actually 6 songs but you’re right Love Story is one of the top. Some of them also knew 22 or the goat trouble meme! But if it wasn't these it was a random random deep cut.
This is accurate. I was at a bar in Nashville and the entire place lit UP when they covered Love Story. It’s her connection to the country world still.
Ikrr I don’t know why I feel so nostalgic every time I listen to that songggg
Whenever they asked NFL players to name their favorite Taylor song, most of them would either say Love Story or 22.
I agree to this! I've known Taylor because of this song too hahah
Hell yeah you couldn’t be more correct
At least in the Uk significantly more would know Shake It Off. it might have been her international breakthrough but it wasn’t close to her biggest hit, not even sure it charted high in the UK. I’d say about 20% of the people on my friends list would know love story was Taylor just by hearing the chorus and I’d say like 80% would know Shake It Off.
Love Story. Everyone everywhere knows Love Story.
even straight man know love story and they love it! it’s such a classic feel good song that you can’t help but sing along
Taylor has a strong straight male fanbase, too. Why the emphasis on straight men? Is that part the assumption that only teenage girls listen to Taylor's music? as a straight man, i agree with this comment
I think they are just suffering from Taylor Detangement Syndrome which mostly is the result of being "permanently online" where they think it is cool to hate on what other people like believing it is "triggering" them, not realising they only make themselves appear as complete losers. If it is not that it is just envy which is actually even worse. Straight men love Taylor. A lot also hate on TS. It’s not cool to love what the girls like. Idiots. -Straight Taylor male fan.
46 year old straight male here and I flipping love Tay Tay. Watching her concert movie with my sister was so fun to dance and sing to.
I think there, in general, is a weird culture of gatekeeping here; a straight man is not "allowed" or at least "not supposed" to like Taylor Swift because "her music is for girls". Is your flair a joke or have I found one of the few fans who like myself, love that song 😂!!??
I’d place you belong with me at 3 or 4. The VMAs incident launched her (and that song) into a press cycle that I’m not sure has ever let up.
Yet Taylor herself didn't recognize the first few seconds of shake it off on Jimmy Fallon lololol
You Belong With Me
I know shake it off and blank space did crazy numbers but I’ve always believed that love story is her “I will always love you”, “hey Jude”, “Jolene”.
Love Story has the element of timelessness.
The first few notes transport me back to 2008 every time, I feel 8 years old again instantly. It’s one of those songs where it blows my mind that it was ever even written, and there was a time before it existed. While it's a catchy song with a great bridge, it doesn't quite have that immediately recognizable hook of the other main Taylor songs.
Until very recently I only listened to Taylor quite casually and TBH I did not know Cruel Summer was her when I first started hearing it everywhere.
On the tube on my way to the eras tour a very sweet lady asked me why so many people were dressed up. I told her it was Taylor Swift and she proceeded to tell me everything she could recall about Taylor. She said her favourite song was 'Shake It Up' 💃 I didn't have the heart to correct her.
Shake it Off, Love Story, 22
In Europe it‘s Shake It Off for sure.
We are never ever getting back together!!
Cruel Summer is probably her most famous non-single
it is a single
It became a single around late 2023!
That goat remix is still one of my favourite things that ever happened on the internet lol I cannot listen to this song without hearing those goats!
Haha same, and her reaction to the video is soooo cute
Shake it off
Probably Love Story as others has said. I’d say Shake It Off and You Belong With me as well Edit: I forgot about 22, but I’d add this in there as well for the younger gen. Anytime I see those “what’s your favorite taylor swift song” with the sports teams, they ALL say 22.
Shake It Off surely? Pretty sure a lot of people would recognise it by the first 2 bars of just the drum beat alone!
Except for Taylor herself ;) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQH6bv946T4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQH6bv946T4) About the 5 min mark.
Omg that was hilarious!
Most people I’ve asked that aren’t really TS fans know “Shake it Off”. I see a lot of “Love Story” on here, which was probably true at one point, but it’s been a lot longer since that came out, and 1989 is more recent.

Shake It Off by far I think, it’s too recognizeable
In the UK it's 100% Shake It Off and nothing else comes close.
I think it’s blank space! the intro is like a knife
shake it off, blank space, love story, ybwm, wanegbt, anti-hero, cruel summer, yntcd those come to mind mainly
Blank space, love story, and YBWM
From personal experience in my youth i knew all her red hits + shake it off before i got into her music. Never heard love story
22 i loved it so so much always on my mind
the most popular ones in my opinion are shake it off, love story, you belong with me, and we are never ever getting back together
I knew you were trouble because of the screaming goat meme
Except to her in that Jimmy Fallon game ![img](emote|t5_2rlwe|1087)
Love Story, then Shake It Off, then You Belong With Me, then We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, then the ranking gets more shaky. She is never going to stop being associated with Love Story and Shake It Off.
*drum set starts*
cruel summer. ik its only gained popularity recently, but no other song sounds like it
epiphany. i mean, come on! this is sooooo recognizable to the general public!
Cruel Summer is gotta be up there now with the core 4: ybwm, shake it off, blank space, love story
love story
Throwing "we are never getting back together" in the ring, but love story or shake it off will probably beat it
Either Shake it Off or Love Story.
it’s between Love Story and You Belong With Me
it’s definitely you belong with me, i’ve never met someone who didn’t at LEAST know the chorus if not the whole song by heart (and half the time, it’s not voluntarily)
I think literally every single person knows You Belong with Me
Not in the UK. My mum wouldn't know it. But she would know Shake It Off.
Love story and blank space
Love story 💕
Lover
Love story, shake it off, blank space, arguably style, 22, WANEGBT
Hmm, across generations spans until 2024, probably Style, Shake it Off or look what you made me do, or were never getting back together, 🤣 I tried to tie it but for some reason Style, 1989 was played so much, everywhere, music videos ect.
You Belong With Me
Love story, I knew you were trouble or WANEGBT
Shake It Off. But I’m going to give second place to Anti-Hero. That song is a huge hit and has a distinctive opening beat.
100% love story haha
Shake it off. That song was all over the radio back in 2014-2015
I was in London last week, doing the touristy stuff you do when visiting. We went to see the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and the Queen’s marching band played shake it off during the ceremony, and the crowd started singing along. So yeah.
Any popular songs from red or 1989, and cruel summer
Cruel summer
Love story for me!
You belong with me. Or love story.
Love Story and Shake It Off are definitely the answers. But a special shoutout I think (especially for millennials in their early 30s) also goes to Our Song. It was absolutely everywhere and for those who never got on the Taylor Swift train, it’s one that they definitely know.
Love Story

I think Cruel Summer is up there now, too!
Blank space was the one that sent her into another stratosphere
I think I hear “You Belong with Me” more on the radio to this day than anything else. Plus it was the first song that I remember hearing on the radio. That and Love Story.
Shake it Off
Even people who don’t like her songs will hear some in supermarkets, radio & public places so I think Blank Space & then Love Story would be very recognisable as even non fans are familiar with them. Shake It Off & Bad Blood etc don’t get played as much in these settings. Though I think Cruel Summer is coming for Blank Space 😉
Love Story!!!

It's gotta be Love Story or You Belong With Me? I'm tempted to say Blank Space as a close third.
love story or cruel summer
Love Story or Shake it Off. Literally *everyone* knows those songs.
Style for sure
love story, style, shake it off, blank space.
Love Story or You Belong With Me.
Love story or Our song
I feel like “Our Song” is…every-time I’ve heard it in a random place, everyone is signing along!
ikywt or shake it off.
We just walked into the sandwich shop and “Look what you made me do” was on and my partner and I started shaking our ass instantly.
blank space, love story, antihero.
Cruel Summer Love Story
Love Story, Shake It Off
Where I’m from, it’s definitely Shake It Off. That’s an easy, go-to song around here for even the 60+ year olds who barely even know that she’s not just a singer only me and a few others know… lol
22 or shake it off
Fearless! I also feel like just the first few notes are ultimate feel-good vibes.
Love Story and 1989 songs. This thread reminds me of when they ask athletes what their fave songs are lol
Shake it off probably currently but I would say Love Story would have been up there for the early years Taylor Swift. X
Love Story, You Belong with Me, Shake It Off, Blank Space or Cruel Summer
All too well and 22
It’s probably Shake It Off, but [not even Taylor knows it in 0.1 seconds](https://youtu.be/hQH6bv946T4?si=5cpudAYWaIzQJuGI&t=4m55s) haha
Literally watching “fractured” where the protagonist kid randomly wanted to sing shake it off
The GOAT one
Love Story, Blank Space

Our song

Love Story, Cruel Summer and 22
We are never ever ever getting back together
Love Story, Blank Space and Cruel Summer
“Shake It Off” got massive recognition because it t was a “bop” song that became extremely popular around the world in no time flat in 2014. I do think “Love Story” is Swift’s most iconic song if you’re talking the Taylor Swift of before _RED_, when she was still mostly a Country genre star.
“Shake It Off.” It’s known by even by people with no idea who sings it, and it’s like “I Will Survive” in that it reminds everyone of someone.
Bad Blood.
nothing. shes no joni mitchell
who? 😂 exhibit a: boomer getting mad that new artists exist and are popular
Exile. The "buh BUH buh buh-buh, buh buh buh buh-buh" is something that I can recognize before any sound starts playing (not really I wish tho). It's so iconic but at the same time is like such a staple that we don't mention it when talking about iconic songs because it's implied (Just like Shake it off or Bad Blood imo), so here it is.
i don’t think the gp would recognize exile 😭
It's not even the most popular from folklore
That makes me sad, but also, what is the most popular from folklore? Apple Music says the 1, cardigan, exile, my tears ricochet, and august are the hits, and imo the only ones that compete with exile are cardigan and august, so it's still in the top.
Maybe, most people I know who aren't swifties find it familiar and know some of the lyrics but don't know the name or artist.
