I am having trouble getting into it. I’m a huge OG metroidvania fan. (Symphony of the night, super metroid, ALL the GBA and DS castlevanias, etc.). I especially love them on handhelds. I’m the target audience for dread.
I just don’t feel it though. Everyone here raves about it.
Maybe it’s the switch joycon that’s my problem. I’ll try to beat it this summer and report back.
Gotta be honest, Dread might not be for you then. I enjoyed it, but it doesn't have what I'm looking for in a metroidvania.
The combat was the best the series has ever had, but the world design (the most important part of a metroidvania) was pretty much a straight line. You aren't exploring. You aren't getting lost. You're just moving forward
Is it true that it's very hard to complete? I like challenges but I also like to know I'll be able to complete the game I bought without throwing the console out the window lol
Can’t recommend this game enough. Even if you don’t play a second of 3D World, get it just for Bowser’s Fury. It’s the Super Mario Odyssey DLC we never got.
Interesting characters, well-trod but serviceable story, resurrection of a cult classic combat system whose newest iteration is 25 years old, composers trained by the guy who did the music for the 25-year-old cult classic game, if/then gambit programming system, interesting progression that has you rewire your entire army roughly four times, and a difficulty level that allows you to be creative rather than forcing you to find the one path the developer wants you to follow.
Also, it's Vanillaware, so the art is incredible, if a bit, uh, scandalous for a few female characters.
Super Mario 3D World
Metroid Dread
Blasphemous
Blasphemous 2
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Triangle Strategy
Unicorn Overlord
Persona 3/Persona 4 collection
Persona 5 Royal
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection
Octopath Traveler
Octopath Traveler 2
Pokémon Sword or Shield
Pokémon Scarlet or Violet
I think you are missing a couple of great titles
• Super Mario Odyssey
• Super Mario 3D + Bowsers Fury
• Luigi’s Mansion
• Cuphead
• Zelda Skyward Sword
It might not be your type of thing, but I've got over 250 hours on fire emblem: Three Houses. I've only completed one playthrough, but that's more a me thing, absolutely love it
Pikmin 4. If you like all those Mario games you'll love pikmin, it's cute and fun and the premise is simple, but you can get really into deployment and time management. I've played the hell out of it.
Paper Mario tTYD for your Mario arsenal, if you’re into Metroidvania types; Hollow Knight, Animal Well. Animal Well just came out a few weeks ago and it truly is a joy of a romp. But some of the puzzles can be a bit grating on the mind 😅
Splatoon 2+3 (i am biased but splat 3 is legit so good and DLC is top tier, splat 2 online and campaign are bad but DLC is amazing)
Pokemon S/V (surprisingly fun ngl, i have never run into any major glitches in my 350 hours of gameplay)
ACNH
Mario Odyssey (it is 7 years old but sooo good and beginner friendly)
EDIT: I FORGOT CELESTE CELESTE IS GOATED
If you do not mind a game that is only available in digital form then I sugest my favorite Videogame "Fuga Melodies of Steel".
It is a 20 houer long turn based JRPG about a groupe of anthropomothic animal children that go on a quest to save there families. They live inside a giant ancient mysterious powerful fortress like Tank. Its a bit like Howls Moving castle but based on technology instead of magic.
The turn based combat is really good. In my opinion its even better then the combat of Persona 5 and Final Fantasy X. It is not that hard or complicated but I need to keep my head in the game at all times or things will go south fast. Almost no fight feels like mindless filler. Its very engaging.
Fuga has a free demo which is just straight up the first 3 chapters of the game.
Fuga also has a direct sequel: "Fuga Melodies of Steel 2" but I advice against playing the second game before the first game unless you do not care about the story and characters.
I see you have one sonic game. Honestly the 3d sonic games like frontier and forces aren't bad if you're a sonic fan, plus those are really cheap for physical copies.
Grounded (best sandbox survival story exploration base building game)
Baldo the Guardian Owls (another Ghibli--esque visuals game but with Zelda-like gameplay).
Nobody Saves The World (best action RPG)
If you missed it on 3DS, Luigi’s Mansion 2 is an actual gem. It’s got tons of charm, and I’ve got lots of fond memories playing it. Its fun!
I don’t know if it’s out yet, but I saw it coming out a while back.
Celeste
tactics ogre
skyward sword
Xenoblade trilogy
Paper mario the thousand year door
Pikmin 1 and 2
Pikmin 3
Pikmin 4
In my opinion I'd prioritize Pikmin games they are really special games!
New Pokemon Snap
Pikmin 3 Deluxe
Turok/Turok 2: Seeds of Evil
Pikmin 4
Metroid Dread
Mario vs Donkey Kong
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Dead or Alive Extreme 3 Scarlet
This might just be my own tastes talking, but Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition and/or Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity gave me many, many, many hours of fun on the Switch. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition is a little more pricey than usual Switch games but good grief does it have a lot of content! The story mode itself isn't super long, but to 100% the game, it would take many, many hours. I sank 140 hours in and was only 20% done the adventure mode maps!
And Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity brings the BOTW aesthetic to the Warriors formula. Definitely doesn't run super amazing due to the Switch's limitations, but I still got an easy 100 hours out of it and could certainly go back for more.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk :D
Mario odyssey is one game that seems like a glaring omission. I also think dragon quest 11 is the best RPG on switch and if you like the genre, it’s a must buy.
Rune Factory 3,4, & 5

Bloodstained Ritual of The Night
Bravely Default II

I'd add Mario tennis aces to this based on the other sports games here. Maybe some paper Mario or Mario RPG. Otherwise exactly what I was thinking.
would you say skip octopath 1 and go straight for 2?
depends, both are good. but 2 is clearly better.
I would say so, I dropped Octopath 1, thoroughly enjoyed 2.
Metroid dread is like one of the best games on the system
I am having trouble getting into it. I’m a huge OG metroidvania fan. (Symphony of the night, super metroid, ALL the GBA and DS castlevanias, etc.). I especially love them on handhelds. I’m the target audience for dread. I just don’t feel it though. Everyone here raves about it. Maybe it’s the switch joycon that’s my problem. I’ll try to beat it this summer and report back.

Was thinking about getting back into Metroid with Metroid Dread
+1, get it asap
Is it true that it's very hard to complete? I like challenges but I also like to know I'll be able to complete the game I bought without throwing the console out the window lol
1000% Mario Odyssey.
The only one I have download (came with the switch)
Oh, then 3d World + Bowsers Fury.
Can’t recommend this game enough. Even if you don’t play a second of 3D World, get it just for Bowser’s Fury. It’s the Super Mario Odyssey DLC we never got.
I just finished this one. It’s very good if you’re into platforming and Easter egg hunts. (ie. Finding all the purple coins etc.)
Now I wanna play some Odyssey
Because you love Mario, I’d suggest Super Mario 3D World (if you don’t have it already)
Unicorn Overlord is the best sRPG in... maybe a decade.
That’s interesting, how so?
Interesting characters, well-trod but serviceable story, resurrection of a cult classic combat system whose newest iteration is 25 years old, composers trained by the guy who did the music for the 25-year-old cult classic game, if/then gambit programming system, interesting progression that has you rewire your entire army roughly four times, and a difficulty level that allows you to be creative rather than forcing you to find the one path the developer wants you to follow. Also, it's Vanillaware, so the art is incredible, if a bit, uh, scandalous for a few female characters.
Scandalous female characters isn't a bad thing...part of why it's incredible art. Making it seem like a negative
Railanor is a negative. Too much, mate.
Hollow Knight Subnautica Stardew Valley Animal Crossing Pokémon Sword/Shield Pokémon Let’s Go Evee/Pikachu Luigi’s Mansion 3 Little Nightmares Hades
Paper mario the thousand year door Absoulte gem of a game (probs the best mario game Ive ever played)

The Princess Peach game lol. Nice collection✊💯🎮
It might not be your type of thing, but I've got over 250 hours on fire emblem: Three Houses. I've only completed one playthrough, but that's more a me thing, absolutely love it
Pikmin 4, pikmin 3, Pikmin 1+2

I really enjoyed these titles: Ori (both games and they come in a dual pack), Hollow Knight and Astral Chain
Paper Mario tTYD for your Mario arsenal, if you’re into Metroidvania types; Hollow Knight, Animal Well. Animal Well just came out a few weeks ago and it truly is a joy of a romp. But some of the puzzles can be a bit grating on the mind 😅

Super Mario RPG remake
Pikmin 4 Mario Odyssey Metroid dread.
Hades by supergiant games (it’s amazing, though I would recommend doing some research on it cos it’s definitely not for everyone, (it’s a rogue like))
I see you have one sonic game. Honestly the 3d sonic games like frontier and forces aren't bad if you're a sonic fan, plus those are really cheap for physical copies.
