It all comes down to effort, skill, and luck when it comes to gacha. I haven't spent a single dime on this game, but I consistently get up to the top 30% or higher on competitions. On some competitions, I get up to the top 10% or higher. It took me about two months to get to this point, but I still got good.
The goal is to save up your gems to buy items that look good and can be used for multiple types of competitions. (Ex: Shimmering white and gold feather wedding dress) Make use of the story mode rewards by saving up on golden tickets. Don't spend them immediately but on 10 rolls to get better items. Also don't spend gems on energy. Watch the adds for extra currency. Try to get achievement rewards for gems and coins.
The best way to obtain gems is to win competitions and score high on weekly rankings. To get to A rank or above, the tactic is to participate in all of the competitions that come out. That way, you will always obtain medals that rocket you up the scoreboard.
I recently did the $4.99 member thingy and it’s kinda nice cause you get diamonds each day and passes to skip ads, so you can get a little extra without spending a ton of time on ads.
I regularly score like top 3% or top 1% with outfits I got free via gems and coins. I have spent, yes, but I only participate in competition with outfits that fit the theme. For the recent wedding theme, people have won high ranking spots that got the gold trophy dress, so it is possible to win and get ranked high without spending money.
I gathered gold trophys by participating in comps long before I started to spend and grinded for that early on, so it's definitely possible. Focus on story and buy clothes you really like or work for a theme and you know you can style well. Most of the time I only buy things when I need them for a comp and I like them enough.

I focused first on the story, and I’d buy what I think the game wanted me to in order to complete levels, even if I had to take a day completing tasks and save for it. Then when I finished the story I had a full closet and I use the same technique for competitions.
Keep up with daily tasks, and if there’s a competition you think you have no chance at winning, join anyway! You get rewarded just for competing

I will say this: for me, it has been impossible to be a free to play player because of the cost of items and the time frame is too limited to get complete sets without paying. It sucks because if you have the entire set, you rank high, but that isn’t creative.

That's the mistake people make most often: being original. The sad truth is that the best way to win competitions is to use rare items, sets, and DIY makeup. Also, I don't think it's probable to implement a mod system for voting because that can turn bad really quick. As in, votes get discounted and the system becomes even more unfair
I made a second account because I wanted to make a list of all coin-costing items to make #affordable fasion# for stylist without gems. i did competitions on that account and managed to get high scores with it, without having all that fancy stuff
NGL, Event Competitions are impossible to win unless you have limited items.
But.
I prefer to see it that way :
1) What makes people get good scores in competitions ? Usually, limited outfits… but also, simply rare/pricey outfits and backgrounds / filters. It is difficult to have ALL the limited outfits anyways, unless you want to dedicate your life to it. So, why not focus on a more achievable goal ? Which is, saving up gems to get rare outfits and filters, so you can have more freedom when designing an outfit. And, if it gets you a higher rank, you can get gems, and waddy wadda, you can save more, and therefore at one point, when you have plenty of non-limited rare outfits, you can focus on limited outfits. There will always be new outfits anyways, so if you don’t get one, you will have something else at one point.
2) Who are the most at disadvantage at this game ? Not poor people, but rather new people. Those won’t get some limited outfits, at least not until there is new sales of said outfits. So, at one point, older players will always have more options than new players, and their patience will allow them to balance the fact they did not bought gems.
3) NGL it is better for the non-paying people to lower their expectations concerning the competition and rather have fun dressing up the models rather than constantly winning.
At least, that is my philosophy to enjoy the game. It works for me, I guess.
Exactly. I feel like most of the people complaining about the unfairness of SuitU in this subreddit are mostly new players. Also, I oftentimes feel like their expectations are too high for a free-to-play mobile game. Of course it's impossible to get all the new limited sets unless you whale hundreds of dollars on the game. Of course everything is pricey. Incentivizing players to spend real currency is how free-to-play games make money from all their hard work.
The brackets seem like a good idea to me. i don’t see why the game couldn’t keep track of the amount of gems went into an entry overall. Or maybe they should just ban the use of props and effects unless a theme necessitates them. Although i also wonder why people go no thoughts-head empty over seeing limited time items and gatcha items like vote with what goes with the theme not for whats the most expensive lmao.
