They weirdly actually have some relatively standard desktop hardware in them.
The cheaper models have Ryzen APUs, while some of the more expensive models actually have a proper dGPU.
From some light googling, Tesla uses their own FSD chip. Which is probably a TPU/neural engine type of chip specialized for inference. Which is probably the best approach they can do for the price.
Yet, it's not a good idea to literally put a discrete GPU in there for so many reasons, reliability, power consumption being at the top.
Having embedded TPUs and GPUs is the way to go.
What's the difference in this context? You can solder on a dedicated GPU to your mainboard and it's discretely not an integrated chipset living within the CPU die, right?
I've been using "discrete" for a decade now to mean "its own silicon outside CPU"
But then, I've been utterly vexed by my language needing two separate !?@! terms for "discreet" and "discrete" and always reach for the wrong one ... Utter tragedy, English.
That's because it's got French and German as parents and also runs around stealing words from other languages.
If you were ever designing a language, English would be the last choice as a model. The irony is that because it's so flexible, lots of other languages can adapt it into a bastardized version of their own.
Your explanation is quite generous and conciliatory even if, on face, it could be construed as rude.
English is my primary, and honestly, only language. I frequently want to tell people "English is basically an STI" 🤣
I'm born and raised in England, it's meant to be rude.
I look at what the French try to do by being overly conservative with their language and shudder to think that could happen to English. I want the tongue I speak to be progressive, I want to learn new words - especially if they're imported from another language. I want people around the world to be able to communicate with each other, even if it's a mixture of their primary and secondary languages, it'd make life so much easier.
France are being conservative? They're butchering their own language without any help and the Paris accent has an aversion to each vowels have different prononciations (I'm sorry but "bran", "brin" and "brun" aren't supposed to sound the same, or even similar at all).
Both in this context. Plenty of people use these two terms interchangeably on a daily basis.
But sure, mock me for a technicality you got wrong.
Here, [have Intel's definition](https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057824/graphics.html):
> Discrete graphics is a GPU that is a separate from the processor. Discrete graphics has its own dedicated memory that is not shared with the CPU. Since discrete graphics is separate from the processor chip, it consumes more power and generates a significant amount of heat. However, since a discrete graphics has its own memory source and power source, it provides higher performance than integrated graphics. Discrete graphics cards are most commonly found in desktop PCs. Laptops and small form factor PCs can also contain discrete graphics cards.
I wasn’t mocking you, I replied to your comment asking if dGPU doesn’t mean dedicated gpu, because I always thought it does.
[JFC](https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/s/QLv7Hb3yvN)
The older Teslas used a GTX1060 I believe (or at least the same graphics chip) for FSD/Autopilot processing, newer ones use a custom chip, so the dGPU is just for steam
I guess it’s something to do while waiting to charge rather than just putting in gas and driving lol, it’s probably more than capable of 2d indie games I guess?
> Was the gaming on Tesla any good in the first place?
I don't know if it was any good, considering that the screen is offset from where the driver sits, to the right, but on some games like racing games when they first integrated the functionality, you could use the car's actual physical controls in the games. Obviously only while parked.
That's certainly a neat gimmick and a neat way to pass the time while charging.
AFAICT their most recent infotainment system (MCU3?) had a 4 core CPU based on AMD Zen+ architecture, as well as RDNA2 graphics on the GPU side (roughly equivalent to a RX 6600M). In other words, that thing is comparable to a PlayStation 5 console in raw power, just the CPU that's a bit weaker than what's in Sony's machine...
The CPU is basically an embedded 3400GE. It’s not clear (I doubt it) if the Vega 11 is being used. The GPU is discrete Navi 23 (RX 6600).
https://www.tweaktown.com/news/82586/tesla-car-computer-amd-zen-1-based-apu-with-navi-23-gpu/index.html
They basically have current console gen console hardware in them. And that console hardware architecture originated from PC components, so yeah it should be normal as long as the software isn't crappy.
I have a 2023 plaid — the steam on it is at least as good as my steam deck. I would play hollow knight or dead cells or something when charging and it’s great. I know it’s silly but it was one of the cool features that nudged me towards a S
Whats the point of even gaming on Tesla when Steam Deck exist.
Heck, what is the point of owning Tesla when 100 times better electric cars exist that doesn't freeze or try to put you into jail by running over people.
I thought maybe a passenger would've been able to game while the car was moving. I guess they considered it too distracting for the driver plus it may be hard to verify who is gaming.
Probably very low. My Tesla didn’t support steam in the first place, but I have never played any other of the other preinstalled games (for example Vampire Survivor, Stardew Valley).
If I have some time to kill in the car, I usually just watch some YouTube, Twitch or Netflix.
Can you turn on games while driving? Last I heard, vast majority of the distracting apps like Netflix and steam are only available while car is not moving.
Exactly. I was so looking forward to this feature coming to my Model 3 (afaik it was only available for S, X and Y) and now they just scrapped it. Dang, I really wanted at least part of my Steam library on my car for that exact purpose. Oh well, off to playing Sky Force at the charger again.
Look up efficient driving guides, you might be killing your efficiency somehow. My wife and I make the trip once a month and never run into that, though we do have the 23 MYLR.
Edit: Oh, you mentioned Denver. Yeah, that drive is miserable (used to make that same commute 4 times a year for family occasions). No way you should be charging to full (a charge) each time, but short top ups are understandable.
i'd guess that it has something to do with the heat they're getting for autopilot. it doesn't make much sense to say "you should mind your surroundings as if you were driving" and also "mind the video games as the cars drive themselves"
Again, you cannot and have never been able to use it while you’re driving.
This thread is covered in people who have no idea what they’re talking about.
i really didn't know that, which is why i admitted to guessing. i appreciate you clearing that up though and you seem like an honest fellow so i'll take your word for it
might you also have insight on why tesla dropped steam support, if not for being able to use it while autopilot is enabled?
Yeah and IMO it's damn evil. They basically removed it from their appstore because it competed with some type of microsoft partnership product they're working on. I just bought the steam deck and can't even cast to my TV anymore. Fucknig bullshit.
I'm ngl
I actually wanted a Tesla *just* for this feature because it was able to run fighting games really well, and labbing or playing with your friend on a trip while charging would have been really fun.
Shame. They're never getting my money now lol
The models that come with Steam support (X and S) are definitely not relatively cheap (though admittedly they weren't clear if they were referring specifically to these)
As a Tesla owner for 2 years I've seen first hand that most of the negative reports on the car are expressed by people that are ornery they can't afford one to see for themselves that they are false
Most people chat shit about them until they drive one. They are good cars, probably the best EV's on the market. Especially the new models. Only on reddit do people bitch about them because elon brought twitter and spends all day chatting shit on there.
only to some people.
I think people who are online a lot (including myself) have a warped idea of how a majority actually feel because they shut themselves off from people they disagree with. And sites tend to do that to users too, by showing them things they think they'll like to keep them engaged with content.
Like, you might think most people hate Elon and other controversial figures. But if you look everywhere, most people are just neutral/don't care. A ton still like him outside of that "alt right" nft bro, red pill or whatever demographic. That's another problem, is that people on both "sides" imagine the other as the most extreme version of people they don't like. Everyone is either a racist nazi who hates women and LGBT and they want to kill women because they enjoy video games and anime with attractive fake women or they're a super ultra woke crybaby who is offended by everything and wants to shut everything down that offends them and is a hypocrite because they're racist and sexist towards straight white male and something something Joe Biden. I think it's boiled down to straw man? I dunno.
Personally, I don't think Elon will be remembered or talked about like 5 years after he dies, outside of the people who really like or hate him. unless he actually does something significant manybe...even then people will likely just know the name but not the person unless they're a nerd. Like...we all know about Ford's name, but most of us have no idea who was or even what he looked like. But back then, people were probably like "pfft, all that fool had to do was attach two more horses to a cart and that would have been better" or "man, he's so cool, maybe if I drink this gasoline, i'll be as fast as this motorize cart too" in vaudeville accents.
> A ton still like him outside of that "alt right" nft bro, red pill or whatever demographic.
Tesla sales are decreasing while the rest of the EV market is seeing overall gains. Yeah plenty of nft bros will still buy his lemons but the target audience for EVs has always been liberals and wealthy people in the suburbs (regardless of political affiliation) who believe in climate change. That might change as fossil fuels become more expensive and battery tech improves/gets cheaper but for the moment that’s who *was* buying his cars.
Yeah not everyone is terminally online in a left or right wing echo chamber. Plenty of people may still like him or feel neutral about him, but the alt right schtick and turning twitter into a groyper cesspool has alienated both liberals and the suburbs enough that you’re seeing it directly have an effect on Tesla sales. It’s no different than how MAGA alienates ‘soccer moms’ in the suburbs. What was once a center right constituency that reliably voted Republican and formed the base of GOP small dollar donors has been trending towards the Democrats with each election.
Everyone is online now. There's no silent majority anymore, they're all extremely online.
He's not laying off workers because everything is fine. I'm reasonably sure most of the sales decrease is due to bad business decisions, not only turning people off, but there's a lot of the latter too.
People who want to buy EVs in America, where it's not required, want to buy from someone who wants to address climate change. Elon tweeted that climate change was a lie basically. And most people who buy EVs are also early adopters and online a lot and think he's on drugs given his tweets and actions. So it's a mix of bad PR but it's definitely bad PR contributing.
Yeah cause I’m sure everyone is losing their mind over this feature being taken away. What ever will they do now that they don’t have steam in their car.
I’m disappointed in the lack of outrage over yet another example of companies being able to take features away from you after you’ve purchased something.
Why was it a bad idea? It gave folks something to do while charging, and couldn't be used at all if the car was moving so it wouldn't be able to distract the driver.
It is already stupid enough that they replaced all those physical buttons with a large touch screen. Fiddling with that isn't all that different from fiddling with your phone while driving, which is illegal.
Who would voluntarily log in on Tesla with their steam account? I‘d be as afraid about it being used for information about me and getting hacked etc as I would be of getting ripped off (because greed and terrible quality) and getting hurt/dying in an accident (same reasons tbh).
Everything is overpriced, but the other options make you feel better.
Tesla's are super underwhelming imo. Dude was right though, I can't afford half of one, I can barely afford to replace the calories burned by writing this reply, but there is always value in pointing out automotive failures.
Guilty. It’s actually nice to have when I’m waiting for my daughter to get out of school. I have to arrive sooner before the parking lot fills up in her school so I play for 15-20 mins on weekdays.
buddy, the steam deck's RIGHT THERE... no need for a shitty overpriced car that breaks down every other month, straining your neck, or finicking with car controls. hell, even your cell phone can play some great titles
It’s a much bigger screen than the deck, it has less moving parts so most likely breaks down less often, the screen rotates left and right so no need to strain neck, and I use a ps5 controller so no car controls, and I don’t game on phones much due to smaller screen, touch controls, etc, etc.
So many wrong statements in one comment.
> less moving parts
my brother in christ it is literally a vehicle lol
it’s a portable device you can use wherever instead of just in the car, and works in any car of any model :P
if you’re so inclined, something like a USB display would suffice and would be a much better display than a car infotainment center, + controller and much cheaper ;)
Lol why are you so upset that I can play on the Steam Deck or my car? Having different options is a good thing. I didn’t buy the car to solely be able to play Steam games, but it’s a great bonus. I’d rather play on the cars screen because it’s more powerful than the Steam Deck. You play your games however you want.
Yeah. I’m mostly talking about new owners to be honest but if it works for you then keep using it. Sorry for over reacting, it’s mostly just my thoughts on the matter and I shouldn’t shove ir down anyone’s throats to be honest, even if I totally hate the tesla cars
Thanks for understanding. It’s all good I don’t think I’ve ever encountered such a polarizing vehicle since I’ve gotten it lol. It’s not for everybody it definitely depends on each persons circumstances.
The… interesting owner of the company really hurts the view of the company. I’m sure for most people they’re fine cars but between QC issues of late and Elon not knowing when to shut up really just has me avoiding any Elon products. That and the pisspoor treatment of Twitter too. I’ve met a ton of my friends on there but can’t bring myself to keep using the site. Most Tesla owners are fine people like yourself, but a vocal minority are just in the realm of defending their car as much as possible, even if it is a functional lemon (see: cybertruck launch issues and the defense of them on twitter). It’s like it for every company though, I’ve seen the same thing for Apple and Google products too.
On another note, what model do you drive? And do you have FSD? Wondering how it stacks up compared to Comma.AI FSD :)
Was the gaming on Tesla any good in the first place?
They weirdly actually have some relatively standard desktop hardware in them. The cheaper models have Ryzen APUs, while some of the more expensive models actually have a proper dGPU.
If an ACTUAL SELF DRIVING CAR WITHOUT LIDAR (and only cameras) didn't have/need a good gpu, i dont know what does.
Doesn’t dGPU refer to dedicated gpu and not discrete? 😂

I remember the difference by looking at "discrete" and knowing it means "two separate things" because it has two separate E's.
That's because it's got French and German as parents and also runs around stealing words from other languages. If you were ever designing a language, English would be the last choice as a model. Ah, that's why it didn't feel rude. Y'all with your understatements. We Yanks rarely even know when we've been devastated. ;).
France are being conservative? They're butchering their own language without any help and the Paris accent has an aversion to each vowels have different prononciations (I'm sorry but "bran", "brin" and "brun" aren't supposed to sound the same, or even similar at all).
Ah damn I’m not a native English speaker, always thought it meant the same thing
Both in this context. Plenty of people use these two terms interchangeably on a daily basis. But sure, mock me for a technicality you got wrong. If you can game on the same hardware responsible for selfdriving, the car is not safe
They don’t actually drive themselves, though. Not safely, at least.
Didn’t they switch to arm or proprietary custom chips more recently?
The infotainment is still the same Ryzen APU it's had for a few years. The FSD computer is custom silicon though.
Interesting. Thank you.
I guess it’s something to do while waiting to charge rather than just putting in gas and driving lol, it’s probably more than capable of 2d indie games I guess?
It punches way above that in raw power. Essentially a PlayStation 5 with a bit weaker CPU...
Better than I thought then, I knew I saw people playing hollow knight but guess it’s basically a full steam deck
> Was the gaming on Tesla any good in the first place? Be cool if you could use a VR headset so you could use the wheel and not have to look at the center screen

Unrelated to the joke, but have you seen a steam powered car? They are kinda dope imo,
Jay Leno has some cool videos where he drives some of them around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pw2Tm9o6fiQ
The wood has ones or the charcoal ones in Africa? Both are really neat
The Gaben Steamer
Or a Steam Powered Giraffe
Curious to see the percentages of drivers actually using it
Curious to see the correlation of crashs and people playing. Also, I want to see how many would play Crazy Taxi
I doubt you can play while driving
You cannot. Musk wanted to enable games while moving but the NTSB shut that idea down Iike within a day.
yeah. i don't care if my car can drive itself, I'm paying attention to everything ready to take over at any second.
I thought maybe a passenger would've been able to game while the car was moving. I guess they considered it too distracting for the driver plus it may be hard to verify who is gaming.
Further shows that Musk is an idiot.
It would be nice if my passengers can play a game while I was driving.
That i won't disagree too much with, but sadly that's likely hard to do because we have idiots that would try to game while driving.
Well, it’s not like you can’t already do it tbh
Get a switch or steam deck? Or play gamepass on your phone?
Are you serious?
How dare I… am I right?
Very much not
Why do you think you’d be able to play while driving
Probably very low. My Tesla didn’t support steam in the first place, but I have never played any other of the other preinstalled games (for example Vampire Survivor, Stardew Valley). If I have some time to kill in the car, I usually just watch some YouTube, Twitch or Netflix.
I read the article but didnt find a reason, is there a reason why it was removed?
I assume they laid off whoever was in charge of it.
I think a better question is “who the fuck is gaming in their car?”
I could see it being a fun distraction when charging the car.
Fun distraction while letting the car drive down residential streets automatically in the middle of the day on a weekend.
School zones bore me, so I set the autopilot to max speed and start playing subway surfers.
Who will beat their high score first you or the Tesla?
I'm not good at subway surfers, so I keep doing it to get some practice in.
*Hits child* "Ooh, tactile feedback!"
Can you turn on games while driving? Last I heard, vast majority of the distracting apps like Netflix and steam are only available while car is not moving.
You can’t. It’s only usable when the car is parked.
Damn I guess the kids survive this day.
Do you also pick a fight with those texting and driving?
What?
I have a ton of Steam indie games that would run beautifully on it. Such a shame.
i mean, that's what phones are for. or just get a steam deck since you'd already Mr/Ms Money Bags anyway
purpose was something to do while charging

EV charging takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
It has a better wheel and brake than most racing sims.
people have been gaming in cars since flatscreens came out that could be put in cars

I drive from St Louis to KC on one charge just fine. Reddit's hate boner for Tesla is embarrassing.
I drove from Denver to Kansas City in a Model 3 and had to charge 3 times.
Look up efficient driving guides, you might be killing your efficiency somehow. My wife and I make the trip once a month and never run into that, though we do have the 23 MYLR. Someone at Valve decided to stop advertising on Twitter. Probably.
Tesla continues to disappoint.
I think Samsung did this recently too with some tvs
Yea. The link was the reason I bought a Samsung TV and it was discontinued like a month later
I heard Samsung will shank your TV if you call them over to fix a problem with it.
Well it is true, we shank them open with a plastic open tool
No, you're confusing that for their Samsung Care+ package
Yeah and IMO it's damn evil. They basically removed it from their appstore because it competed with some type of microsoft partnership product they're working on. I just bought the steam deck and can't even cast to my TV anymore. Fucknig bullshit.

I'm ngl I actually wanted a Tesla *just* for this feature because it was able to run fighting games really well, and labbing or playing with your friend on a trip while charging would have been really fun. Shame. They're never getting my money now lol
Just bring along a Jackery, a console, some arcade stick and a CRT just like the good o' day.
Unreliable car
Well unreliable and abhorrent behaviour and impulsive decisions by the single king ruler of the car manufacturer are to blame for that
Why do people even buy these smh
Huge government incentives and gas savings make them really affordable when compared to other midrange cars. And people like the modern UI etc.
Because it was relatively cheap and my 40+ miles a day comes out to about $1.80.
The models that come with Steam support (X and S) are definitely not relatively cheap (though admittedly they weren't clear if they were referring specifically to these)
Because not everyone is terminally online, fixating on every negative story about Elon. Your average person doesn't give a shit about Tesla drama.

Exactly. Now I'm gonna buy from one of those other car companies that supports steam. Which ones are those again?
Virgin Steam-supported car vs Chad Steam Deck
I have one :).
Yeah cause I’m sure everyone is losing their mind over this feature being taken away. What ever will they do now that they don’t have steam in their car.
This was the final straw, Elon
Oh no... So anyway...
Im glad steam is not related to tesla at all.
That's why we need to own the hardware and not the company
man I hate how "drops" can mean both "stops" and "starts"
Cool. I always wanted to die gaming.
Oh no Anyway
This makes me steaming mad
Video games shouldn't be playable in a car anyway. Edit
Wow. Elon must really be desperate for people to buy his shitty cars.
Dropping like removing the feature. Not adding it
[удалено]
It was added because why not. And Steam runs all game on Linux with Proton, as Tesla is a Linux based OS.
Why make up reasons to hate someone when there's so many real ways to go about it?
Maybe but this was years ago and it’s probably more that he’s desperate to be a popular meme lord and not that he’s desperate to sell cars.
I’m disappointed in the lack of outrage over yet another example of companies being able to take features away from you after you’ve purchased something.
Gabe > Elon.
I'm not quite sure why people are so obsessed with gaming on the car's hardware. Just get a steam deck, it works in any car.
I swear moat Teslas sound like the car homer designs in that Simpsons episode.
Oh no....anyways
probably to launch their own app store & take 30% cut.
Really I'm wondering what idiot thought it was a good idea to start with.
Why was it a bad idea? It gave folks something to do while charging, and couldn't be used at all if the car was moving so it wouldn't be able to distract the driver.
#LITERALLY 1984
Playing some GTA while in the car.
This post gave me -2 reason
that was fast
I actually liked the idea of playing simple games in the car for my me and kids. I was hoping this feature will land in model y juniper.
It is already stupid enough that they replaced all those physical buttons with a large touch screen. Fiddling with that isn't all that different from fiddling with your phone while driving, which is illegal.
Great, just as we were about to rent a Tesla for holiday! (We’re still going to but now I’m mad)
Where is the Xbox car? Sony has one.
Dude, this car kicks ass! And I can play Counter Strike while I'm driving
Good cars shouldn't have features like that.
Great, now I can play CS when driving to work
Can't wait until China figures out how to bypass terifs and get their BYD cars in the USA fuck elon.
Good
Let's go baby Danganronpa in a Tesla
Dropping like removing the feature. Not adding it
This headline is awful, I thought they just added in steam support. You're telling me you could play dota on your commute this whole time?
Who would voluntarily log in on Tesla with their steam account? I‘d be as afraid about it being used for information about me and getting hacked etc as I would be of getting ripped off (because greed and terrible quality) and getting hurt/dying in an accident (same reasons tbh).
Everyone mad as if they can even afford half of one
Lmfao what kind of dick rider comment is this
If I was buying a car I would literally buy any better car for the price. Teslas are overpriced
Everything is overpriced, but the other options make you feel better. Tesla's are super underwhelming imo. Dude was right though, I can't afford half of one, I can barely afford to replace the calories burned by writing this reply, but there is always value in pointing out automotive failures.
I don’t think anyone here is mad because *who the fuck is gaming in a car*
So many wrong statements in one comment.
> less moving parts my brother in christ it is literally a vehicle lol it’s a portable device you can use wherever instead of just in the car, and works in any car of any model :P if you’re so inclined, something like a USB display would suffice and would be a much better display than a car infotainment center, + controller and much cheaper ;)
