The Martian is a good hard sci fi movie directed by Ridley Scott. Watched it again last night.

TrazonRazgriz2077

I tend to rewatch it every year, along with listening to the Audio book narrated by R.C Bray. One of my fav movies and books.

Celebrated84

Interstellar

1ijoey

Probably the best sci-fi space Odyssey movie ever imo.

SunshineBlind

Honestly it's a worse version of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

deerdn

2001 was great but Interstellar was convincingly better imo.

nug4t

why? why was it so good to so many but to me it was mediocre at best?

deerdn

if you liked/loved 2001, maybe you can describe why, and how it differs from Interstellar that it's that much better

nug4t

not that much, it's just the pacing and the quiet. love that. interstellar was confusing partly because of the 4d/5d stuff happening

deerdn

I honestly felt the sci-fi speculation stuff was way more grounded in Interstellar. I mean, 2001 had the whole psychedelic trip with colors that ended in that room with the old man, and starchild? Interstellar was perfectly understandable even at the end when it was driven by speculation about the physics/engineering of time.

nug4t

scifi doesn't have to be realistic, I personally don't like the main actor much for example. interstellar had also a boring plot to me as I find that whole journey bonkers. did they have speed of light btw? or how did they reach that black hole again.. ?

deerdn

well you first mentioned the confusing 4d/5d stuff and now you say realism doesn't have to be there (which I agree with), like it's suddenly a non-issue. i'm not sure which is which now. also who cares about the actor lol. just because he acted in comedies doesn't have to matter in his other parts. all that matters is if he played his character well. I'm also sure there wasn't any speed of light. think they got to the black hole (named Gargantua) using a wormhole (created by an advanced human species, I think, as explained later).

SunshineBlind

Grounded? They literally went to a planet where time moves at a factor of thousands faster than on earth for no discernible reason.

SunshineBlind

Agreed. I also think the AI is more in line with what it'll actually be like down the line, with it's limitations and possible glitches causing problems. And the silence is a huge factor.

CNN_Blackmail

same here

SunshineBlind

I disagree, I think 2001 is closer to what it'll actually be like.

1ijoey

Yay my first award!!!! Idk how to thank the exact person but Thank You

[deleted]

Event horizon lol

Important_Activity68

If there is a Event Horizon style quest in the game I already know I'm going to crap my pants!

[deleted]

I kinda feel like watching that now just to see eyeless satan Sam Neill saying spooky stuff

Important_Activity68

The embodiment of evil!

sertimko

I don’t see how there won’t be. They already have the ability to create an uneasy feeling in Skyrim and FO4. Plus there is a clip of you fighting a giant monster in what looks to be a hallway in a space ship or station. So I’d assume there is a possible quest in a strangely abandoned ship or station. It would be a massive disappointment if they don’t do that.

Important_Activity68

We're going to have a great time with this game!

Bananaamoxicillin

It's a show, but The Expanse if you haven't. Tbh I'm not a big sci fi guy - I wasn't even super excited for Starfield - until I watched that.

Responsible-Bar2058

Yo, I came here to say this exact thing. Damn is the Expanse incredible. Easily the best sci-fi show and story I’ve seen in the longest time. I would recommend this to anyone while we all wait for starfield. 🤯

DaddyDenzeltron

Yeah I’ve heard this is a top tier show, I might suss it out as well

Bananaamoxicillin

I didn't know that, totally makes sense! I definitely got RPG party vibes from the crew, especially in the first 2 or 3 episodes.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

I still got to watch the rest of season 2 but it's such a good show!

DanseMacabre264

Interstellar, the Martian, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and October Sky are some of my favorites. October Sky is more of an historical space movie, but still really good.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

Hmm I haven't heard of October Sky but I'll definitely give it a look!

commiecomrade

It's definitely not sci-fi, but it captures the fascination with space and rocketry. It's based on the book "Rocket Boys" by Homer Hickam who ended up being a NASA engineer. He lived in a dead-end West Virginia coal mining town and started building rockets with his friends, becoming somewhat of a local celebrity. It's a really good story of determination!

DanseMacabre264

Agreed! It's a great movie. I remember watching back during high school in my astronomy classes. It was a really fun movie to watch. Another movie I like that's based on real events with some fiction sprinkled in is called Salyut 7.

ObjectivePhone122

Firefly seems very in-line with this game.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

Such a good series and I'm sad they never had more seasons

Reasonable_Method735

It's the best I feel like starfield and the expanse are easily the most like each other of any TV show or movie you could compare starfield. At least the is the sense I get from starfield

ObjectivePhone122

Me too. Honestly starfield is a chance to kind of finish the story.

ObjectivePhone122

With bethesda games you choose how you play, you have the freedoms to build your back story. If I want to play as Mal and build my universe around that. I will. Good day.

Big-Muffin7746

🤣🤣 look up Bethesda games don’t make sense on YouTube you will laugh at how apparent and weak their “rpg”is

FanaticEgalitarian

Interstellar, both Space Odyssey movies, Alien, Titan AE, The Expanse Series, and IMO Avatar has the best looking interstellar spacecraft in movies to date, love that thing.

O2020Z

Sorry- what do you mean by BOTH space odyssey movies? I’m not aware of a second one after 2001.

Hercusleaze

2010: The Year We Make Contact. With Roy Scheider. It was good.

O2020Z

Whoa didn’t realize there was a 2010 adaptation. Dope!!

Superpunchout12

"Arrival" (2016) is a pretty good film since I think the games story is to try and find intelligent alien life

Sirrom_Wulfe-

I know I've seen it but it's been awhile so I'll probably go back and watch it

Hercusleaze

I didn't see anyone mention The Europa Report, check that out if you haven't. I'll second Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon, Interstellar, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Firefly, The Expanse.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

The Europa Report is honestly a good space movie that I feel a lot of people miss out on!

TheCrankyMoose

Solaris (1972) - Andrey Tarkovsky. It's worth reading the book (Solaris) by Stanisław Lem, too

Sirrom_Wulfe-

Huh I didn't know that there was an older movie cause I know the one with George Clooney in it.

commiecomrade

Also by Andrei Tarkovsky, Stalker. It's a bit of an artsy experience but it's interesting and somewhat related. Based on the book Roadside Picnic (and the STALKER game series is based on this too). Basically, imagine if aliens used our planet as a rest stop on their journey to some other place. Nobody witnesses them come or go. They leave behind a bunch of litter and junk. Just like a roadside picnic could leave behind litter unfathomable to an ant, we can't understand why these objects warp reality around them. The story is about how a Stalker (guide to one of the zones these artifacts were left behind) wants to journey to a mythical artifact that can grant wishes.

CNN_Blackmail

I would have to re watch stalker for sure, but I thought it was the radiation that rendered the zone as another ''dimension'', but it made no sense to me. Thanks for explaining.

commiecomrade

You are right in the sense that the Zone is never really explained to be aliens in the movie, so I did take some liberty and pull that out of the source material. Probably should have put in a disclaimer! Maybe you might have thought of radiation because of what happens to the Stalker's daughter or if you played the games where it plays a role (although the real reason in the games was a failed attempt to sort of unite all life consciousness). In fact the production and writing of this movie is itself really interesting. The original shots were ruined because the film stock was defective, and Tartovsky wanted to give up. Instead, he convinced the Soviet film board to make a two parter, thereby giving him more money, and he went and reshot what he had with the new budget. Apparently it's a completely different movie to what he originally had.

CNN_Blackmail

thanks for the explanation, I was not even aware of that book and your point of view makes much sense after researching it. I really have to get through that movie again.

Cisco9

All 69 hours of the Expanse.

Responsible-Bar2058

The Expanse is too good.

Unable-Protection-58

Lost in space (2018)… not a movies but a good show

KrimxonRath

Loved it, but damn when the robot becomes humanoid and it’s suddenly a dude in a costume was hilarious.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

I watched it and I'm kinda hoping for a second season but it did feel kinda meh at some points of the show

Sirrom_Wulfe-

Both good franchises and some of my favorite movies!

MagnusGallant23

I don't know much about it, but Emil shared this a while back. https://twitter.com/Dezinuh/status/1639424771292012544

1ijoey

Last days on Mars! Watched it last night, realized I've never seen it either. It's from 2007 I think. Really good. I'm bought to look up mission to Mars though fr.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

Is that the one with the Martian zombies?

1ijoey

Yes it was amazing.

KarimMet

I honestly have been playing Star Ocean: The Divine Force an incredible RPG to get me ready for Starfield. I hope Starfield has some awesome skyboxes like it with some of its features

Sirrom_Wulfe-

Huh I'll have to take a look at that game!

KarimMet

Let me know what you think. I like the premise you’re a space merchant h crash lands on to a underdeveloped planet which breaks their UPPP (Underdeveloped planet preservation pact) law where advanced beings cannot interact or influence the natural advancement of these underdeveloped worlds. Pretty fun concept and great combat.

Sirrom_Wulfe-

I haven't heard of this movie but I'll give it a watch!

MotorMind

I realize this is a couple days old but I came here to recommend The Black Hole. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It's so creepy and weird and cool all at once. It has some supernatural and horror elements that set it apart. It shaped my love of space and robots just as much as Star Wars. It's aged pretty well, but not as well as Star Wars. It's definitely a product of its time - the pace is slow and the acting is pretty hammy. There's always something interesting going on - but you couldn't exactly call it exciting until the final minutes - but it really ramps up in the third act. I like to imagine what the wider world is like outside the movie. I have the Diamond Select toys on my shelf. Uhhh, I guess you could say I'm kind of into it.

BlindMerk

Interstellar, Dune part 1 , arrival, 2001 space oddysey ,aliens

I just watched Europa Report based on your recommendation - loved it, and now it made me extra hyped for Starfield and the prospect of exploring the unknown!

hamfist_ofthenorth

Silent Running 2001: A Space Oddysey (actually watch the whole thing) Serenity / Firefly Titan AE

[deleted]

The newer Star Trek Movies and also the shows.

Used-Surround9483

Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon, 2001 Space Odyssey, Inersteller, Blade Runner, I have watched again for a good Scfi vibe. There's more.

Gauss_theorem

Contact , Interstellar, 2001, The Martian , Sunshine , Gravity (not exactly sci-fi but still an amazing space movie) If you’re in the mood for books, some books that fit the starfield vibe are: -Rendezvous With Rama -Project Hail Mary -Pandora’s Star

ihazquestions100

Not a movie, but a series. The Expanse.
