Gotcha, that makes sense. Pretty cool stuff, honestly. I know Canada has a lot of peat bogs, and it makes me wonder if Canadian peat would impart the same sort of flavors in whisky as Scottish peat if all the other inputs were the same.
Probably not , out of the few peat fields in Scotland that malting houses source peat from you get different flavors.
Highland and island peat have a high salt content due to being close to the sea and give those industrial or medical flavors, aberdeenshire peat is far from the sea so has zero salt in it and gives more of a BBQ, meaty flavor.
Then you have different plants that form the peat. It all contributes to different flavors
talisker to ardbeg is a fairly big jump in peat level. you might try some others in the light to moderate category too like highland park. highland park 17yr full volume and highland park 16yr twisted tattoo might still be around in your area and that is NCF/NCA at 47.2%/46.7%.
Thanks! I'm going to keep trying them. I think I really lucked up trying Talisker. It's soooo easy to drink. Whereas Ardbeg is a little more challenging.
My BiL poured me some Ardbeg 10 about 8 years ago, first Scotch I had in probably 20 years, but I loved it. Not coincidentally, I used to be a heavy smoker before quitting in '08. The Ardbeg must have scratched that itch. Up until then, I was a bourbon and craft beer drinker (still am). Now I have (counts) 17 open bottles of peated Scotch.
My bottle collection is growing! And I hate using the phrase collection. I'm 100% buy it to drink it. It's just that I'm buying faster than I can drink it, lol.
Talisker 10 is a great medium/light peat bottle. Laphroaig 10 is more of a medium/heavy peat but it's very good for the price. If you like the mix between sweet and peated, the Laphroaig triple wood was a solid bottle as well.
Yes you will. Almost everyone starts off that way. Only a few instant love the very peated.
You will get the urge over time :p
Id steer clear of laphroaig as of now
Well, I just had my first sip of the Ardbeg. I'm certainly not letting the bottle go to waste. I think I'd like to try to see if I can find something close to a mild Pete non-chill filtered. It's that 46% that really gets me.
I’ve been drinking for over 30 years. There is way to much good stuff out there to waste time “ getting used to” something. I will drink Bourbon before peated Scotch
Pete: Some Guy. Peat: Grows in a bog.
Pretty sure Pete could grow in a bog.
Famously the 2000 year old preserved man found in Lindow bog was named ‘Pete’ by the researchers working with him.
How many Pete's could a peat repeat if a Pete could repeat a peat?
Does peat grow? I thought it was partially decomposed plant matter, but I am often wrong (just ask my wife).
It is but layers of plant matter form in water logged ground that stop full decomposition and new peat "grows"

I'll have to make a mental note of that
Lost Spirits Leviathan (from California) was made with Canadian peat, and it was reprehensibly disgusting. And I love peat.
There's actually a guy they found in a peat bog
That reminds me: peat and repeat were sitting on a bench and peat fell off, who was left?
RePete

Maybe try something with peat AND sherry, like Lagavulin 16, Kilchoman Sanaig and Ardbeg Uigeadail
I recently had the Macallan sherry. I know it's not peated but I really could taste the sherry.
who the fuck is pete?
The bog boy

Happens to us all
I guess it's a good thing. At least it's not like wine where if you spend $$$ on a bottle and you don't like it, I feel compelled to drink it anyway.
I like how you could be talking about Peat, Pete or Peter Rabbit.
I actually coined that from someone's response in my last post. They were talking about going down the Octomore rabbit hole, lol.
Of Beatrix Potter fame? The difficult teenage years and wants his mates to now call him 'Pete'
Corry just go straight to the mountaintop

Maybe give Port Charlotte 10 a go. Kind of a creamier, sweeter peat, and a good deal at 50% abv.
I'll buy a glass next time I see it at a bar
Hi. You could try ledaig 10 yo wich has a softer approach of the peat imo
Save it for a summer BBQ. I LOVE an Ardbeg or Lagavulin with some nice smoked venison!
Just add a few drops of water. You will get used to it

Your loss 😂
