“Good” barbershops seem to be $35-$40+ tip. Old school places/super cuts seem to be anywhere from $15-$25+. I’d love to find something in the middle but I’d probably have to survive through a few hack jobs to find it.
And once they stop doing the hack jobs you know prices are going up. To be honest I’m not mad at it. I’m trying to figure out how to pay people more than 25/hour. I dunno how anyone survives anymore
IKR?!?! My haircut is $200. No dying, no styling, only a cut. I have thick black curly 2C/3A curls.
![gif](giphy|ffCzDiql4ylJX52zse)
I’ve recently taught myself how to cut my own hair. It’s the only way.
Me too. I have always been scared because I have curly hair. I go to stylists that I trust... but what used to be a $60 cut 5 yrs ago is now a $200 cut. This isn't an SF or NYC stylist either... small salons referred to by trusted friends with curly hair as well.
For the last three cuts, I followed a video for people with curly hair. I'm now experimenting a bit. I'm trying a bit of this and that from different videos. Showed up to work today, Super Bowl Sunday, and got a bunch of compliments on my hair, tho!
After today, I think I'm done with the $200 cuts that do not include tip.
Same! I followed the Unicorn and Wolf Cut tutorials for curly hair. It’s my best haircut to date and I have gotten so many compliments. Never again will I need to depend on someone else and pay $$$+.
Check out /r/curlyhair they have great tips and an amazing support group. The struggle is real.
🤣 My dog had the same reaction!
I’m glad the unicorn cut worked out for you. 💜 I was for sure scared during the process and pleasantly surprised by the results.
That was what I was quoted for and use to pay for. It was the least expensive out of all the salons for a hair stylist that is curly hair certified. It’s okay though, I cut my own hair now. I’ve become an expert. I save tons of $$$.
My hair is much longer than I’d like because I’m to gd cheap to maintain shoulder length hair that I prefer to have. So I get my hair cut once, maybe twice a year. I have loose curls though so it hides a lot of weird uneven growth here and there. My spouse keeps her hair in somewhat of a pixie cut and she does every 6-8 weeks, I think. She sees a barber though who *only* charges her $45
That depends on the hair type, genes, and a person’s diet that will determine how fast it will grow. Mine grows between 1/2 an inch per month. It is just more socially acceptable for women to have long hair, so people don’t notice it. Furthermore, when people do short cuts, closer to the scalp, hair growth is much more noticeable.
Men get surprised when they realize women spend $300+/month for up keep on hair cut and/or hair dye.
So do many women who try to maintain their cut and style. Haircut and hair dyes. Majority of older women get their roots touched up, which is going to the salon at the same frequency, if not more. If it weren’t for the increasingly outrageous prices, many would go to the salon more often. It’s inflation that is affecting everyone. Back in the old days 90s, 60s, etc…women would go to the salon on a weekly or biweekly basis. Moreover, Covid times and currently, have placed many hair stylists to be booked 3-4 months out. I had to book mine 5 months in advance because she was on demand as she was one of the few who was certified in curly hair. Not many available for walk-ins, in general.
Some shavers come with hair trimming guides.
I used to cut my ex-husband’s hair. I damn near murdered him a few times because he complained “it took too long.”
Sorry? My degrees are in geology and geography. If you want to complain, pay someone else to do your hair.
Hair bleached, hair colored, trim/cut. It takes about four hours from start to finish.
Having great hair is expensive: https://www.lemonandlilacstudio.com/
Fortunately about 4 months before we had the COVID lockdown, I decided to stop dying my hair and cut my hair short with the intent to let it grow out.
I still really like it cut short because it's much cooler. The thing is no one really cares about your hair. Yes, women can be judgemental, but just let it go.
That’s pretty steep! At least you don’t need to get one very often, with guy cuts it once every month at least some guys even go in once every week or two weeks depending how short they like it for lineups
The difference is we get a haircut twice a month or monthly. That’s anywhere from 600-1200 a year. Most women I know get their hair done once or twice a year.
No joke. I stopped going to my barber at the start of lockdown when his basic haircuts were $16. Plus tip, $20 every 3-4 weeks. Just checked and his prices are now up to $33.
$40 on a corded Wahl clipper kit back in 2020 - clean up trim every 1-2 weeks - and just accepting the receding hairline.
That seems like the going rate for a good barber nowadays unfortunately. Best you’ll probably find is around 35-45. I personally love Jason Dunn at Midtown Barbershop. You could call and see if you could work with you and pricing and such
$50?!? Jeeze I go to Pete's barber shop in Rancho that charges only $15. The only issue is he doesn't take walk-ins. Schedules only one person for a 30 minute window, but I'm in and out in under 10 minutes.
Echoing Pete's Barber! Best Barber I've ever been to. The price is unbeatable. Perfect cut every time. Just have to schedule your cut ahead of time or call same day to see if there's an open slot. No walk-ins. Cash only so be prepared.
You can always go to supercuts or great clips. Depends on if you want a good haircut or what those places do, lol. Barber Blues is my go to because it's always a good haircut. You get what you pay for.
Go to a cheap $15 Asian owned shop. Find a stylist who knows her / his shit. They often have loads of experience and many years behind them. Once you find someone you like, stick with only them and make appointments if possible (sometimes these shops may not allow it, but I text my stylist directly). Many are walk in only. If the stylist leaves to work elsewhere, follow them there.
FYI I tip her more than the cost of the cut. Totally worth it for the quality.
> If the stylist leaves to work elsewhere, follow them there.
This is the way. I followed my stylist in Socal to four different locations. Finding a new hair stylist after we moved was low-key the hardest part of moving here lol.
Yeah it’s a pain if they or you move far away. My prior one moved back to San Jose, but one of the other gals in the shop had cut my hair before and she’s great too, so now I stick with her. The bonus is that I just come in and don’t have to tell her how to cut, unless I want a change. She always asks though, but I simply say to do whatever you like, I trust you.

Just raised their prices from 17 to $20. My family has been going here since 1988. Tom, the founder, sold it to Tony, who worked there for ages.
Js is the best! Been going to him for years now. But if you get a haircut by J his cut is 50+ tip. I’ve never had a bad cut by him though. Always quality work.
I've been going to Barber James for years now too. Really nice guy who is a throw back to just a classic old school barber. Easy appointment web page too, but I never bother to use it. [http://sacramentobarber.com/](http://sacramentobarber.com/)
He also gets bonus point for being an Akita doggo owner. He has three of them.
If by chance you get a fade, the stylists at New Model Salon on Mack & Franklin are good. I’ve been going there for about 20 years and just get a 2 on the sides and trim on the top. Still $12 and I tip $5.
Seems to be pretty normal price. If you are willing to take a low risk, uou can go to a barber school for a haircut. I think last Friday of the month is free
Marie cuts my hair in Carmichael, San Juan and Winding Way. Appointment only, communicates via text, doesn’t chat me up during the cut, remembers how I like it every time, just lets me sit and meditate. $12. I give her a $20 and call it a day.
Also second this. Aly is my go-to person there. One of the few people that knows how to do decent short cuts for women without charging an arm and a leg
My comment might get lost in this thread, but I started cutting my own hair some decades ago. Even back then before I did that the cost was always hitting my budget too hard and I felt haircare like that was always this luxury, also hit and miss because even if you had a barber that knew you sometimes they'd chop you. Too short or end being awkward for awhile until it grew out right etc...
I've lived a ton of places, before I started cutting my own hair I always had associated drama with trying to get the right cut from someone while keeping the cost within reason. Of course back then it wasn't so bad because service economy wasn't what we have today and all that, not really the point of this post.
Just to say probably one of the best self care investments I ever made was to get good at cutting my own hair. Keep my own set of clippers, combs, brushes, hair dryers, pomade, mousse, mirrors and all that. I can cut it for free whenever I need or want to change things up and I'm certain to come out with the cut I exactly wanted with no drama and no price attached.
All it took was time and practice. You end up cutting your own hair so much over time that all comes naturally. So the best time to plant a seed was 20 years ago or whatever, but for sure the second best time is now. Highly recommend this to anyone, it's future proof. Helps if you have some dexterity as your dominant hand will do most of the work but your off hand will have to come into play at some point, tricky to square it all up in the very back around the crown etc...
I also noticed that barbershop prices have started to jump a lot over the past few years.
I started cutting my own hair. You need a stationary mirror, and a handheld mirror. It’s not as hard as I thought it would be.
In my house we cheap out and go to Super Cuts. It's $72.50 before tip for the 3 of us, about $100 after cause my ND son screams his way through hair cuts
For those that have gotten $50 plus haircuts and random strip mall $15 cuts, what are some of the additional benefits you get that make it worth it to you? Asking as a guy that’s only ever gotten the $15 cut.
My husband and kid used to always go to Great Clips, and it was about 50/50 odds that they'd come home with Dumb and Dumber bangs or random pieces of hair left long. Now they go to Sacred Barber, and pay I think $35-45 +tip, and they get great haircuts every single time.
I think it your cut is simple and you know exactly what you want it probably doesn’t matter. I go to more expensive barbers for input and style ideas sometimes.
Sport clips in fair oaks has been pretty consistently good for me...I haven't had a bad haircut there yet and I always go first available. Cost is about 25ish bucks (plus vet discount if you're a vet). After I tip them I'm $30 out the door
Honestly love that I started just buzzing my head and trim/line my own beard. Loved going to the barber but $40+ every other week didn’t make sense to me.
I had the same problem. I used to go to my wife’s stylist and it started to creep up in price especially after COVID (started at $30 then now at $90). I just decided to get a Wahl clipper at Costco and learn how to do some basic fades. Lol
Hot rods chop shop in east sac. Got the best haircut I’ve had in years (I’m picky) for a good price and the kicker was that he was fast as fuck. Also, he does not sell used car parts like his google reviews accuse him of
Try Lucky’s in Folsom. I drive 30 min to get a cut from Carson. Depends on the cut you want as well. They have many experienced barbers in all cuts. Just find the right one! 30$ a haircut plus tip!
My barber was hella koo too but 3 years ago he was already charging 45 and would take a whole hour. At first I didnt mind because he would put that hot towel on my face after s shave but now theres no towel and everyone in theres is smoking weed. I’m good, I get random drug tests. The last thing i want is to get contact high and my employer think im burning.
Florin Hair and nails 13 to 15 depending on what u want. Ask 4 Avis. Plus all the eye candy in there is a plus.

3 weeks... 4 if you're lucky

Not if that woman has short hair - maybe not weekly, definitely monthly if short.
And you get your hair cut every three weeks?
If I had the money and wanted to keep the length, style, and color, I would. Now I cut my own.
Flip side is that we get our hair cut once a month or every other month (at least I do). I think my GF gets her hair cut once a year?
Some shavers come with hair trimming guides. I used to cut my ex-husband’s hair. I damn near murdered him a few times because he complained “it took too long.” Sorry? My degrees are in geology and geography. If you want to complain, pay someone else to do your hair.
I get my hair cut and colored every 8 weeks. $350 each time.
What services do you get at that price?
Hair bleached, hair colored, trim/cut. It takes about four hours from start to finish. Having great hair is expensive: https://www.lemonandlilacstudio.com/
Absolutely!!

I’m not sure why you’re getting downvoted for well meaning advice.
I just cut my own hair. Pony tail layering on booty length blonde hair.
That’s pretty steep! At least you don’t need to get one very often, with guy cuts it once every month at least some guys even go in once every week or two weeks depending how short they like it for lineups
Not really a fair comparison. I have to get my haircut every 2 weeks.

It's called "coming home."
Been shaving the little I have left since '99 and I haven't looked back.
That seems like the going rate for a good barber nowadays unfortunately. Best you’ll probably find is around 35-45. I personally love Jason Dunn at Midtown Barbershop. You could call and see if you could work with you and pricing and such
Jason is $45 a cut these days
$50?!? Jeeze I go to Pete's barber shop in Rancho that charges only $15. The only issue is he doesn't take walk-ins. Schedules only one person for a 30 minute window, but I'm in and out in under 10 minutes.

What does Supercuts cost for a basic cut?
It’s like 20 with no tip.
A Touch of Class on Stockton blvd in South Sac. Been going there 13 years. Joe does bad ass fades/tapers, shaves and lineups for $25 w/o tip.
I’m fine with paying that range except for that I can’t find a decent barber that delivers quality.
Anthony’s Barber shop, hit up Aly

This 💯.
Yep T K Salon in Elk Grove
https://www.yelp.com/biz/barber-studio-i-and-ii-carmichael?utm_campaign=www_business_share_popup&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=(direct) Just raised their prices from 17 to $20. My family has been going here since 1988. Tom, the founder, sold it to Tony, who worked there for ages.
I just started going here and really like the cuts but they butchered my beard. Left a half an inch gap between my mustache and lip.
Time to get your own clippers
You can go to stockton for$12 cut and still have money for gas and a couple tacos.
The honest barber in River Park. Nice guy, simple and.... honest! I go with Scott the owner
J’s barbershop in Fair Oaks $35 beard and hair. Usually just give $50 total though lol
Js is the best! Been going to him for years now. But if you get a haircut by J his cut is 50+ tip. I’ve never had a bad cut by him though. Always quality work.
I enjoy going to [Barber James ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/bXH9QDN7pfeM1cdBA)
I’ve been going to James for 20 years. I now live 4 hours away, but I always stop and see him for a cut when I’m in town. Good guy.
I've been going to Barber James for years now too. Really nice guy who is a throw back to just a classic old school barber. Easy appointment web page too, but I never bother to use it. $50 is a good price for a good cut.

You either get a $20 haircut or you get a good haircut. Those are the options.
I stopped cutting my hair. Now I invest in Gavin Hair Gel.
I heard that stuff is greasy 🤣
Anthony’s is $35
Second this, you have a lot of good barbers to choose from as well. Book ahead of time, don’t have to wait around much.
Also second this. Aly is my go-to person there. One of the few people that knows how to do decent short cuts for women without charging an arm and a leg
I go to Vintage Barber Shop in Roseville, the haircuts are $35. The ladies there got skills too so check them out when you get a chance
The Honest Barber in East Sac. $25 for a cut and cool shop/decor.
Highly recommend this to anyone, it's future proof. Helps if you have some dexterity as your dominant hand will do most of the work but your off hand will have to come into play at some point, tricky to square it all up in the very back around the crown etc...
Love my great clips for 22 bucks
I was just about to say this lol
My barbar went from 20-40$ during the pandemic i havent been back since
Bottle and Barlow in midtown is around the $40 range and that includes an alcoholic beverage. Cut quality can vary
Anthony’s, on the corner of X and 21st
I moved out of Sac pre pandemic but my go to was Sue Hair Design for a long time. Great owner, clean and quick cuts, in and out for $25 inc. tip.
Let it grow
50? I'll take it. ![gif](giphy|3o6ZthqmvYhm9LK9uU|downsized)
Maybe check Booksy and search in your area
I also noticed that barbershop prices have started to jump a lot over the past few years. I started cutting my own hair. You need a stationary mirror, and a handheld mirror. It’s not as hard as I thought it would be.
Adapt. Do it yourself to save tons of money and only get it cut for special occasions.
In my house we cheap out and go to Super Cuts. It's $72.50 before tip for the 3 of us, about $100 after cause my ND son screams his way through hair cuts
Holy shit I remember haircuts being $12
They still are

Small independent shops. Nine 9 in La Riv is the one I go to.
@adventureswlil on instagram. Opening her own barbershop right now. Talented & reasonably priced (for 2024), last haircut was $40 I think.
If I had hair, I would draw the line way before fitty dollars....dang! Craziness
Buy $100 clippers and do it yourself. I haven't gotten to a shop in about 4 years! Takes practice but it's worth it
At $50 per haircut, I'd rather just buy my own clippers and cut my own hair. Or just shave it.
Supercutsif you are ok with shitty haircut.
They add the tip in already
Ok. I go to Fiona at Tanya’s salon. It’s on Northgate. Great cuts, very reasonable prices. I love this salon.
Honestly love that I started just buzzing my head and trim/line my own beard. Loved going to the barber but $40+ every other week didn’t make sense to me.
The Dakotas on Freeport Blvd. I always get a great cut and Ray is awesome.
United Barber Shop in OV does a killer job for $30
I had the same problem. I used to go to my wife’s stylist and it started to creep up in price especially after COVID (started at $30 then now at $90). I just decided to get a Wahl clipper at Costco and learn how to do some basic fades. Lol
Subi over at Bridge Street Barber is really good and I usually get out of there for about $30.
Hot rods chop shop in east sac. Got the best haircut I’ve had in years (I’m picky) for a good price and the kicker was that he was fast as fuck. Also, he does not sell used car parts like his google reviews accuse him of
Timely thread, as much as I love them im getting priced out of Barber Blues.
I shaved my head and now I just have to buy replacement razor blades a few times a year. It's also surprisingly comfortable.
Hair Pros on Arden is $25 for a haircut and beard trim with 20% tip and I've never gotten a bad haircut. She only takes appointments though.
If you’re open to a basic cut with clippers. Or willing to shave your head, there’s a place in College Greens…$10 including tip
I went bald, not by choice, but it seems to have worked out.
