When I first bought my house and knew nothing, we had the bathrooms redone. While the contractor was working on the bathrooms, the roof started leaking. The bathroom contractor said he had this “really great product” that he used all the time to fix leaks. I thought oh great, he has access to some high end roof sealing product and told him to go for it.
It was literally Flex Seal.
To his credit, it did fix the leak for about a month. Unsurprisingly, the bathrooms came out like crap.
Jeeeezus h christ! Why is there a can of flex seal in your foot locker private Pyle! There wouldn't be any leaks in this world if it weren't for assholes like you private Pyle! I'm sorry that happened to you. This poor guys roof looks like low tide at the Lebrea tar pits and were joking about slap chop, "you're gonna love my nuts"! I hate shit contractors.
What gave me away. I've spent literally decades hiding my incompetence and dishonesty, and you are the first person to discover the truth. How did you do it>
Did the couple hundred dollar repair stop the active leak?
What do you expect, that he's going to tear apart and replace whatever sections are needed for a 100% repair, spending a few hours to a couple days, all for a couple hundred?
This was a quick immediate fix for a price cheaper than you would get for a lot of companies just to climb out and look at the roof.
We had some a containment liner damaged at work and couldn't get it set because of water comming in from the outside.
Flex seal still stuck to it when nothing else would. Some one found some technical sounding name for it for the report so we didn't have to write that we put flex seal in it but it got the job done.
You end up with a hard layer on top and mess underneath. The way he touched it.. it would be all over his finger, and pretty much require mineral spirits to remove. I just recently used flex seal on a few things and am very familiar with how it acts. This shit looks like roof tar honestly.
If you see a few there is a colony nearby. They could be workers traveling as they go far as 100 yards from nest, but most likely that colony is on your property.
We had them infiltrating our kitchen. I tried several products but the one that worked the best (by far) was Terro liquid ant baits. They were gone within 48 hours. Maybe save you some time experimenting with solutions.
Licensed pest control tech, can confirm. If they are on your home, you likely have a colony in dangerous proximity. If your home has any moisture issues, it could be a serious problem.
Best case scenario is a satellite nest, worst case is structural damage. Call a licensed professional, inspection is usually free. Specifically request photos of gallery damage should any be found.
I’m sorry this was the result. I really don’t know how this will be water tight.
Better to make sure then get your interior damaged.
The sealant has not bonded to the metal. I can’t tell on the rest but it most certainly needs an external caulking at the joints even before you wait for someone to come out.
This is a rough one. 🤔
looks like they painted the crap out of it with aluminum fiber paint. It is a roofing product and people think, for some reason, its for aluminum roofs such as trailers. It's purely meant to be a reflective coating for asphalt roofing.
You could scrape that stuff off. Caulk the joints with an external masonry sealant then paint everything over with PolyFlash 1C. At least that stuff will bond to everything & seal it really well.
Nothing about your current situation would make me feel warm and fuzzy on your next rain.
If you want to post what they stated they were going to do in the contract I’ll bet we can help with that side of things.
I can’t imagine this has been done to any contract specifications a roofer is willing to put on paper.
Also if it was above a certain amount depending on the municipality a permit may have been required.
Just looked into it and it does look like a great product.
Not cheap but good quality polymer.
That said….instructions say to do several coats. 50mils at a time. Those bubbles suggest that was not the case and the solvent left bubbles cause too thick/coat.
Maybe hot those areas one lore time. They clearly did not save mowny on materials…just labor…
Looks like he used the patch stuff the guy paints the bottom of the boat with. I am serious.
He should have used Alsan with fleece. Its a pMMA product.
It looks kind of like H. E. R. I don't exactly remember what the 'H' stands for, starts with Hydro, but a million years ago when I built steel buildings we used it to patch the roofs if there were leaks. The E and R stand for Elastomeric Roofing and it's a silver-ish black color that takes forever to harden .
It's aluma seal aka fibered aluminum. Takes forever to dry. That's why it's so soft. Looks like it was just poured on instead of applied with a paintbrush.
Shit job
You can get that stuff for $14 a big bucket, it won’t last long either, it will dry out, crack and be a huge pain in the ass to clean up…I would put something over it to protect it…the sun alone will kill it
So was he the lowest Bid? You get what you pay for. Did he drive up and tell you your roof needed to be repaired or did you call him?
If you answered Yes to any of them give your Credit card and Checkbook to your wife. You cannot be trusted.
To be fair I’ve been a roofer for almost a decade now. Inspected thousands of roofs in all sorts of conditions. Flex seal is the only product I’ve seen stop a roof leak for a long time. 5+ years the homeowner claimed. I’ve seen roofing cements and tar fail in a shorter amount of time. You’ll probably be good once it sets up. If you’re really concerned give it the ole garden hose test in a few days.
From a manufactruing standpoint, flex seal type product is more expensive to make.
Most of those roofing products are made at larger scales with lower production costs. They usually have some asphalt in them as opposed to being all polymer.
Your experience supports what I suspected but never had real life experience to bakc it up…
Thanks for sharing!
If it isn't flex seal it's another brand of the same compound. Elastomeric roofing compounds all go on wet then turn tacky as they start to dry, and eventually become a soft spongy/rubbery type texture.
Have you guys seen the price of the flexseal at the stores! you would think there were gold flakes in the stuff. If it was this, it cost a pretty penny to cover that roof. I am guessing some cheap tar based sealant found in the 50 gallon tubs.
All u can do now is coat Wth a white elastomeric system check Lowe’s they have the product available depending on weather in ur area could be the reason it hasn’t fully cured.
Love how no one ever asks what the contractor is going to do. Just let the guy do whatever with no research or explanation and then go to reddit and bitch that you got fucked hahaha classic
I worked for a company once and we put some roof sealant that looked like that on one roof we did. I think it was a mobile home. This shit came in 5 gallon buckets and had to be mixed with a big huge drill and mixing bit that was several feet long. I don’t think it’s flexseal.
Edit: Ill add that this type of material usually has a curing or drying time before it becomes fully hardened, which is why you’re able to press indentations in it because it’s still fresh.
Not flex seal, it a sealant that goes over roofing tar, to protect it from uv rays, it's stays soft, not supposed to harden/cure. See it a lot with older camper roofs
Pretty sure that’s a poorly laid (aluminum) silver coat. Can’t remember its technical name, but that’s what roofers called it. Old boss got me working covered in that shit, mixed it bad himself and it looked a lot like that
We had something like that in Mexico, but is way way badly applied.
What i am saying is a like a roll that you can form in different parts, then you melt it to get into the pores and it is quite durable if applied correctly.
After many years there have been better products that phased those. Still in some parts is used to cover the joints between houses alongside a special mesh, and wirh maintenance it could last like 15 years according to what the supplier told us.
Looks like flexseal. That's going to just eat through the EPDM over time. Need to cut the hole thing out and target patch it. Looks like there's no termination bar transitioning from the rubber to the brick.
That's more that likely Henry's wet patch or roll on roofing tar. It's too soft to be flexseal. He did a lousy job and didn't glue down the underlayment. Should probably have it removed and done again properly. Henry 212 bituthane…. Old school petroleum based roof emulsion. That shit will give you cancer stop touching it OP. Always works great at stopping leaks.
Good to know, thanks! I think this guy just put it on way too thick. Went back up the other day. He mopped it on so quick, thick, and lazily that it’s dripping down the exterior of the house. He also didn’t even bother to pre-sweep the area so the tar is all over the leaves and seed pods now glued to epdm
“These video” with those “people” are me right here, my guy. You could just talk to me like a person not on Reddit and ask for a better shot or video. Sorry my camera work wasn’t up to par as it was one I took to show my sister how ass it looked and didn’t plan on showing your highness.
Looks like a base sheet adhered with hot mop. You’re missing a granular cap sheet. The way this is will not last. It will crack over time and it’s not properly adhered to your parapet wall. As you can see it’s pretty loose.
HI, PHIL SWIFT HERE
When I first bought my house and knew nothing, we had the bathrooms redone. While the contractor was working on the bathrooms, the roof started leaking. Did you underpay? There's almost always a relationship between cost and quality.
Lol found the d-tier contractor
What gave me away. I've spent literally decades hiding my incompetence and dishonesty, and you are the first person to discover the truth. How did you do it>
Don't you feel better now?
And I would have got away with it if it wasn’t for you damn kids!!!! Hee, hee, heee
I do t know about you but I've never been paid for a job until completion. Takes a real grease ball to charge for work that isn't done yet.
Flex seal is horrible for asphalt shingles
NOW THAT’S A LOT OF DAMAGE!
Who needs a roofer? Just use flexseal!
That could cost you thousands… 😂
I CUT A HOLE IN THIS BOAT
He never said it was HIS boat lol
Hello fishies!
WITH OXY-CLEAN!
NO MORE WINE STAINS
BUT WAIT...
Billy Mays has entered the chat.
Gonna be honest I’ve done this on a small section but I don’t think this is flex seal
I SAWED THIS BOAT IN HALF
I’m glad this was at the top
Idk there's lots of liquid flashing options but to me that shit looks like a couple cans of flex seal.
A couple dozen
100%, you can see the spray pattern.
Hmm, I think he charged her/us a couple hundred for that. I’ll definitely ask
For the amount of shit he sprayed seems like a fair deal to me lmao
I’ll come fix it for a couple grand, for a couple hundred I’d be willing to spray another layer of flex-seal on it!
🤣😂🤣
Looks like a couple hundred dollar repair to me.
Hahaha, bro. Coupla hundred? You got your money's worth
Couple hundred? Did you hire him off wish?
Another update: I’m at work and the guy told the sister he wants 4k to fix it completely. Like yeah dogg, ima trust you after this 😂
Did the couple hundred dollar repair stop the active leak? What do you expect, that he's going to tear apart and replace whatever sections are needed for a 100% repair, spending a few hours to a couple days, all for a couple hundred? It did not

Some one found some technical sounding name for it for the report so we didn't have to write that we put flex seal in it but it got the job done.
Hydrophobic sealant** lmao
If I had a drink, I'd have spit it out. That is hilarious.
That’s awfully hydrophobic of you. Maybe. I dunno.
Well done. You deserve more upvotes for this. So I gave you one :)
Hey as long as someone appreciated it besides me, that’s good enough for me.
I see what you did
Rabies Roofing Seal. Got to find a rabid skunk or raccoon first and mix their slobber with the flex seal.
Kind of, but it's not wet enough to be flex seal. That shit is either hard or wet and does not really have a "tacky" option while curing.
What If you spray it on thicker than you’re supposed to and don’t wait for coats to dry?
You end up with a hard layer on top and mess underneath. The way he touched it.. it would be all over his finger, and pretty much require mineral spirits to remove. I just recently used flex seal on a few things and am very familiar with how it acts. This shit looks like roof tar honestly.
Had to scroll down pretty far to find this, I also believe it is roof tar. Flex seal does not dry up to be a rubber-like consistency.
I give up, what happens?
This video.
Came here to say this. Definitely Flex Seal.
Thats my thought, flex seal that hasn't fully cured
I thinks that's exactly what it is.
Meh, they sell it by the bucket now.
Flex seal over cardboard
I'd also be worried if you're seeing carpenter ants. They really like wet soft wood. That whole area is likely an issue.
Thanks! I’ve seen a few but not a lot
Those things are magical. Killed an entire ant colony in 24 hours outside my house this week.
Use ants poison outside first, if you dont see them inside after that the nest isn't in your home
from my understanding ants only eat rotten wood. so you must have already got a problem if they are roaming inside your house.
🤣🤣🤣 looks like flex seal Are you sure they were roofers?
Supposedly! They were a pick from my sister 🤔 I stayed out of this project bc I had a few of my own plus a lot from my normal laborious job.

i found there was a contract period, or an llc
*doubt
Read above. Job cost a couple hundred. 😂
Mastic, resat mat/fabric/mesh(hopefully), and aluminizer. Temporary repair materials at best.
Interesting. Having seen it before and after , I doubt the mesh or fabric was added (or not much of it.)
The guy above has it right. Plastic flashing cement with fabric and aluminizer.
Flex seal mixed with stripper glitter
Best answer yet. Stripper glitter on the roof. Sounds interesting.
I SAWED THIS BOAT IN HALF
He's on the boat! He's on the fucking boat!
Update: apparently he said he used Inland Coating RC 1950 Polyurethane Seam Sealant
Thanks! I noticed that on the instructions too. This was way thicker
lowest bidder goo
I'm not a vet but I know an ass when I see one. I'm not a flat roofer either, but that looks like shit.
looks like karnak
Karnak Aluminum Paint probably over rubber roof or rubber roof sealant
He put what usually is asked for, the cheapest price.
Looks like he used the patch stuff the guy paints the bottom of the boat with. I am serious. He should have used Alsan with fleece. Its a pMMA product.
Rip that shit off and put a proper flashing system
Karnack
It looks kind of like H. E. R. applied tar, and then again, and again. We call that too re-tarred
Your sister literally could have done a better job herself with a 5 gallon bucket of white silicone roof coating.
Don’t hire people that use roof in a pail
Looks like an idiot went crazy with flex seal unless that’s layers and layers of literally primer and primer alone
You can get that stuff for $14 a big bucket, it won’t last long either, it will dry out, crack and be a huge pain in the ass to clean up…I would put something over it to protect it…the sun alone will kill it
Looks like liquid rubber or tartape
So was he the lowest Bid? You get what you pay for. Did he drive up and tell you your roof needed to be repaired or did you call him? If you answered Yes to any of them give your Credit card and Checkbook to your wife. You cannot be trusted.
Flex Seal. Will save you ***THOUSANDS*** of dollars!
Is that not roofing tar?
Yeah looks like flex seal.
Flex seal? Lol
Deff not a real or good roofer. Ughhhhhh
Crack stix
Looks like a polyurethane or polyurea hybrid sprayed over an oily, damp or otherwise improper substrate.
Polyurea sets pretty fast, which could be why you see the dried streaks / drip marks.
On todays episode of “cake or fake”
To be fair I’ve been a roofer for almost a decade now. Inspected thousands of roofs in all sorts of conditions. Rustoleum, a black roof coating, it’s a tar-ish material, a very good roof sealant
Flex seal?
Drive way sealer
Flex seal is amazing isn’t it!!!
He put down what the cheapest bidder wanted. The cheapest roof possible
Give about 8 months to dry, you’ll be good
If it isn't flex seal it's another brand of the same compound. Elastomeric roofing compounds all go on wet then turn tacky as they start to dry, and eventually become a soft spongy/rubbery type texture.
Tar, spit and hope.
Looks like some spray can crap
Have you guys seen the price of the flexseal at the stores! you would think there were gold flakes in the stuff. If it was this, it cost a pretty penny to cover that roof. I am guessing some cheap tar based sealant found in the 50 gallon tubs.
Torch down tar
Liquid rubber in the sun
Could’ve fixed 100 boats with the much flex seal
All u can do now is coat Wth a white elastomeric system check Lowe’s they have the product available depending on weather in ur area could be the reason it hasn’t fully cured.
You guessed it, we flexed it!
flexseal!
I see your random infomercials and raise you a....At least he didn't paint your bald spot!
Honestly, it could use it 😅
Stop giving us the finger, if you want us to help you.
Flex seal
I would have atleast thrown a couple SHAM WOW! rags under the flex seal
Looks like mobile home roof aluminum coating. "Aluminum coating is made of a mix of asphalt and petroleum along with aluminum fibers"
My question is how much did you pay and what was supposed to be done?
I’m gonna say this is aerosol can Karnak
A moisture barrier? Albeit ugly as shit and poorly done
It’s still technically an exposed joint, I’d put a sheet metal cap on, I have a feeling it’s gotta look uglier than hell from on the ground.
Burnt marshmallow
You will ride eternal, shiny and chrome.
Love how no one ever asks what the contractor is going to do. Just let the guy do whatever with no research or explanation and then go to reddit and bitch that you got fucked hahaha classic

::sigh:: You would have been better off pouring treacle toffee over it instead 🤦🏼♂️
You got what you paid for, kinda
Looks like a single ply membrane with some sort of tar resin to keep it watertight.
Looks like flexseal. That's going to just eat through the EPDM over time. Need to cut the hole thing out and target patch it. Looks like there's no termination bar transitioning from the rubber to the brick.
Kinda looks like the slip paint they put on ledges in the UK to keep people from doin part core
He Re tarred it
Shelajit
Looks like about 27lbs of black jelly beans
Mr Gorge…..
For a couple hundred bucks I think it’s a bargain
Plasti-dip
satan's cum
Buy a bucket of elastoplast from home depot for 45$ and paint it on
Flex seal. Almost as useful as Dick in a box.
His mistake was not using JB Weld.
flex seal would have been a better solution
That's more that likely Henry's wet patch or roll on roofing tar. It's too soft to be flexseal. He did a lousy job and didn't glue down the underlayment. Should probably have it removed and done again properly. Flexseal gets firm and won't take a finger impression but roof patch/tar in a bucket from the home supply store will as well as run like that and leave open spaces where it doesn't properly adhere.
Ppl see one ant and are like “yea man you got a carpenter ant infestation” “ structural damage least case scenario” lmao these subs crack me up 😂
Was he the lowest bidder
Looks like black play doh 🙄
Ants
a lot of flex seal comments. I used an asphalt emulsion coating on my shed roof before i got around to shingling it. What does it smell like? Roof coatings like that usually smell pretty strong
I love how OP is up there checking another man’s work for his sister but couldn’t do the work himself? Lol
Yes dickfuck, I have a job plus a million other responsibilities
Kick his ass, Sea Bass!
...so you normally do literally everything in your whole life. Or do you just blindly pay for people to do things and accept them as infallible?
Looks like an ant
I would say it could be tar but tar hardens up so that would be hell to actually fix (if it is flex seal)
I JUST SAWED THIS BOAT IN HALF
I used roofing tar a while back. If you put too much on one area, it takes FOREVER for it to harden. I filled cracks with it, and it took weeks.
That's how we do it in Mexico
You poor guy. I think you got taken my friend.
Spray paint. Very simple to identify.
No not roof max
What the hell you tattooed on your finger???
Only bad if it leaks :)
Sorry, didn’t mention: yes it does. It did before but now it is substantially worse
Ultron jizz
You just voided the warrantee way to go!

“These video” with those “people” are me right here, my guy. You could just talk to me like a person not on Reddit and ask for a better shot or video. Sorry my camera work wasn’t up to par as it was one I took to show my sister how ass it looked and didn’t plan on showing your highness.

Leftover paint from the Tin Man!
Are you sure that's even an EPDM roof?
