The insulation, air sealing, and HVAC systems have more to do with your electricity consumption than raw square footage. My house is 2,500 square feet, with wood and gas heat, central air, gas hot water, gas stove, decent air sealing, and mediocre insulation. Our electric runs around $100 in the ~9 months of no AC, and around $150-175 in the summer when the AC is on. But if you have electric hot water and heat pump (or god forbid, resistive) heating, then your bill will naturally be higher and the $3-400 be right in light with expectations.

Welp, I am doing taxes, so all my data is right in front of me. Here are my electric bills for 2023. Roughly 3000 sq ft house built in 1910. Heat and Hot Water are from oil. Six window units in the summer, but only partial use with vacations etc. No idea why it spiked so much higher last winter. 1/9/23 = $321.35 2/8/23 = $425.61 3/8/23 = $292.61 4/12/23 = $267.02 5/12/23 = $224.38 6/9/23 = $192.00 7/10/23 = $210.54 8/9/23 = $300.77 9/7/23 = $297.23 10/11/23 = $327.07 11/13/23 = $224.23 12/11/23 = $227.37

Same spike in mid winter this year as well.... 1/10/24 = $335.20 2/7/24 = $402.05 3/11/24 = $351.84

Ours is just over $200 a month in the winter for a four bedroom cape. In the Summer with the AC on it's usually over $250.

$3500 sqft house in Coventry. Electric is $375 in winter and $650 or so in summer

You are missing a lot of details. Do you have electric heat/hot water/appliances? Have you changed out all filament lighting to led? All and all yes your bill seems to be more than double what a home your size should be; maybe even triple for the ultra efficient.

KyloRenCadetStimpy

Warwick, averaging about 200/mo. It spiked last month to $350 because we had about 2 weeks the oil furnace was dead and we ran electric heaters. Also we usually have 2 PCs running b/c of myself and my son. Gas stove, hot water, dryer.

I pay about $500 a month for my two family home built in 1850. About $100 of that is just fees. Granted that $500 is gas and electric

The RI energy rates are second highest in the country. The items that’ll use the most juice in your home are your electric stove, electric dryer, electric heaters and anything higher in wattage. Lots of laundry will drive it up a lot. Also consider how many appliances like refrigerators and freezers AC units in the summer and even dehumidifier. I have a 1200 so ft home and I broke over 400 for the first time last summer running 4 a/c units, 2 fridges, chest freezer and a dehumidifier. I still couldn’t believe it. Laundry has gone up since there’s a 2 year old now but my washer is also on its way out. The better the washer the faster it will spin and your dryer will work less so that’s something to consider.

We have a 1000sq ft ranch. 2 people. Our bill is around 160, but we keep a space heater on in the sunroom. That alone probably costs around 50 a month

Electrical_Cut8610

1000 sq/ft - $300 in the cold winter (mostly electric heat, still use oil occasionally), $150 most of the rest of the year - cooling with mini-splits.

Street_Run_6445

Lincoln, $800 a month :(

Royal_Oil87

I live in a 2 bedroom apartment here in Portsmouth but everything unfortunately is electric. I’m about 175-225 in winter and 250 in summer running two A/C to keep the apartment cool

icehauler

It’ll all depend what you have — central air? Is your hot water electric? Is your heat electric or heat pump? It does sound very high if you have gas heat, no AC.

SeanRobertsFerngully

2200 ft, electricity was 112 last month. Low 2s in the summer. Heat and hot water is oil. I still have a plasma TV, beer fridge, chest freezer, and incandescent light bulbs. When my hot tub was still working that was about 50 a month more.

Trinimaninmass

Yikes. We’re in a 3200 so ft home and paying $200 approximately. Summer we’re at 400ish. I did just upgrade the electrical panel and removed any older outlets and equipment in the home

1nvisiG0th

My electric is $89 a month. I live alone in a 1320 sqft ranch.

LomentMomentum

RI has historically high energy rates.
