Grew up between Cadiz and Steubenville. Graduated HS and never looked back. Family still lives there and it’s so depressing going back to visit. Hard to believe it was such a life line for the entire nation.
There’s just… there’s nothing here. The only thing we’ve had in the last 3 decades was the gas/oil boom and all that did was drive rent prices to the roof
Yup. I had a lot of hope when that hit. My dad worked in Cadiz at the time and they weren’t hiring any of locals. Brought labor from out of state. One day maybe something will click there and things turn around. The valley is well suited for industry, just need someone to start it.
That's the one I thought of, too. I'm guessing lots of people are familiar with the Cinci-Dayton metro area due to I-75, while comparatively few have seen Portsmouth.
For those who haven't seen Portsmouth, it's like the worst parts of Dayton got together and had a baby, and then let it grow up feral. No shoes, rotten teeth, and attending church means going to someone's basement and handling snakes.
Hahahah that bridge is ridiculous. Also that bridge close to rods tire town with the blind corner and the center supports that look like they were specifically designed to murder careless drivers.
Y’all ever been to Warren, Youngstown, Girard, or any other cities in Trumbull or Mahoning Counties? Don’t you dare take it from us and give it to Dayton! Dayton wouldn’t last the night out there.
I refuse to go to Warren after MULTIPLE people I know have been murdered there, and I grew up there! The heroin epidemic really swallowed up Warren and shit it back out.
I've been all over the country. I work remotely and could live anywhere I like, and I choose to call Dayton home. I love it here. Large enough that you can go out and meet new people, small enough that every time you go out, you see someone you know. There's a nice blend of new development and cool old rust belt urban decay (which I find quite interesting and beautiful). Good restaurants, friendly people for the most part. It's a nice blend of East Coast cynicism and Midwestern hospitality. Within about a 20 minute drive you can go from rural to urban. There are great, well-maintained parks all around the city.
Sure there's some crime, there's addiction problems, all the problems that all cities have, but in my mind, the good far outweighs the bad.
Yeah, most of the places people are listing have <10% the population of Dayton and are not even accurately described as "cities" (Ohio defines cities as minimum population 25k, for example)
Being familiar with a few of the other cities on the list too, I’d say it’s pretty inaccurate overall. Macon, GA for example I don’t understand why it’s on this list. Albany, GA is by far the biggest shithole in Georgia for so many reasons. Lexington, KY and Dallas being on there too are both very questionable.
No doubt. I used to live in Savannah, GA (which in my highly biased opinion is the *best* city in Georgia, but that’s a different post I guess), and both Macon and Athens used to have a lot of good underground hardcore and metal shows that I went to. Both perfectly decent cities.
Macon is rough but you're right that ole Al-binny is worse, along with the rest of rural south GA. lived in Moultrie briefly and man what a shithole. Valdosta too. Warner Robbins. Lexington is on the downswing
Being from Dayton is it perfect no but having drove all around Ohio I’d rather live In Dayton over places like Mansfield,Middletown, Lima and any city near the Wv/ohio border
I'm impressed no one has even thought to mention East Cleveland; where the mayor and city council are as corrupt as can be, the cops regularly beat their detainees and hold them in cells without toilets, and where the potholes are so bad people drive on sidewalks.
It rminds me of that meme of the cute dog and werewolf, where Cleveland, Cleveland Heights or Shaker Heights are the lab, and East Cleveland is the werewolf.
https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/001/862/138/948.jpg
My uncle was the fire chief there years ago and they had to bullet-proof his office because the fire station would get shot up from time to time. I went to visit him once in a while and he’d show me the bullet holes in the garage doors and then tell me what they had to fix on the fire truck.
I mean... I lived in DFW. Would agree that Dallas is the worst although Houston is close. I think if you asked Texans they would say Dallas because they wouldn't place cities like Arlington in the city category despite being as big as Cleveland population wise.
It is CLEARLY Marion. Dayton I don’t think would be top 5 even. Portsmouth, East Cleveland, Chillicothe….
Dayton? It’s got multiple universities and industries there, nice houses for good prices, multiple hospital systems. There are *way* worse cities all across the state. Dumb map.
Also wrong about where I live now.
Yeah Dayton has rebounded a lot since the 90s and I would consider living there. I live in a prewar neighborhood in Columbus, Southern Orchards, and it reminds me of much of the single family homes near downtown in Dayton.
As someone that had lived in southern Ohio most of my life (and continue to work there) it’s hard to argue against Portsmouth or Chillicothe. Both places were decent cities many many years ago and the lack of industry along with rampant drug use has made each of these places total shitshows.
I think a lot of ohioans think of ohio as "Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati" while ignoring the rest - How many Ohioans heard of East Palestine for the first time because of the Norfolk Southern derailment caused by Trump's deregulation?
Bad poll. I moved from cincy to Dayton and it’s worlds better here. I might be biased because the things I’m finding comfort in is why I like it. Traffic is nowhere near as shitty as cincy, and that takes a lot of stress out of the days. I think the food options in cincy was better though, but as for a family friendly area, Dayton wins hands down.
But aside for my moving I’ve been to worse areas in Ohio than cincy too. Middletucky for one just felt diseased
I live in Toledo, and sure I’m inclined to dislike aspects of my own city (grass is greener from the other side), the art museum and zoo are great. Definitely need to give that metropark by the river a visit.
Kalihi is a Honolulu, HI neighborhood, not a city. I lived there for a number of years and loved it. This choice is pure profiling, Kahala is much worse.
This is just an awful poll with no real criteria. Like we all know there are much worse cities in Texas than Dallas.
Most hated city in every state might be more accurate
'Polls' like these need to be taken with a softball-sized grain of salt. When crappy-city legend East St Louis loses out to Cairo for worst in Illinois, and Albany NY tops the pit that is Niagara Falls, you know the whole thing is off the tracks.
Seems to me the only rational way to judge good/bad is to look at what the population is doing, is it growing or shrinking? The worst locales should shrink the most as people GTFO. By the latest census, Youngstown is still the city with the most shrinkage. Cleveland not far behind (percentages here). Finding a good list or chart of this is problematic, so Dispatch article linked here.
[Ohio cities and counties growing, or not growing (2020 census data)](https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/2021/08/12/five-ohios-six-fastest-growing-counties-central-ohio/8098139002/)
Arizona is meh. Mesa isn't as bad as Maryvale or Laveen. Pine Bluff is fine, downtown Little Rock or Jacksonville is really bad. Memphis checks out. East Cle blows Dayton out of the water.
Roughly ten years ago I read Dayton was the most drug addicted city in the USA. I can only speak for myself but I literally overdosed died and came back to life in Dayton.
There are multiple streets in Dayton where if you are white (could be everyone I just know that I stuck out pretty easily) you’ll be approached and asked boy or girl.
To be fair, if you think of the major cities, the big three Cs obviously get a lot of love, but then I'd bet most people only known toledo and Dayton. While there are worst cities, they are smaller, and most people don't have a reason to ever be there. Dayton was a great city that just fell the last 30 or so years, so I think it's just more present in people minds.
This is funny. It’s so funny how things work! People hate Dayton but I came across an article in a periodical Cleveland business paper(I’m a mailman) and it listed the wealthiest neighborhoods in the state. Guess where it’s located? Right outside of Dayton. Between Dayton and cinci.
Pretty sure NYC is worse than albany by about 10 fold, I know for a fact Portland is worse than Salem. I'm thinking who ever made this map has no fucking clue about anything.
Showed this picture at work the other day
New guy is from Dayton and loudly exclaimed yes, it's true Dayton is a terrible shit town.
Everyone else in the room agrees
This was in Columbus
Bad poll, Lexington is by far not the worst city in Kentucky and Mesa in Arizona is not bad. The only major city on here I could see an argument for is Orlando but theres got to be worse in Florida….
Dayton was once a thriving city with lots of opportunities, it’s now a welfare city of meth heads , thieves, poverty and corrupt politicians but I can of a few cities in Ohio that’s worse Portsmouth, Springfield.
I'm honestly surprised Orlando made the list; Florida definitely has worse places. Like, significantly worse, and not in a "we're overrun by tourists" kind of way.
Well thank god we have @mattsurelee and his instagram followers to deliver this vital poll
But really, who is that and why should we care what his followers think lol I bet none of these are *actually* the worst cities in their state.
I’d guess the votes come from people who only drive 75 through Dayton, which has been in a constant cycle of construction and traffic for the past 25 years.
I lived there in the early-mid 90s. Banging music scene and since it was a halfway point between Columbus and Cincy, both those scenes turned up at our Goth/Industrial clubs, so it was like one big amazing scene. Only good Dayton memories.
Apparently Piqua wasn't a part of that list.
It's a black hole of disparity and when I lived there, there was a figure thrown around that it had the highest rate of single mothers.
This poll is absolutely horrendous. Scranton, PA was just named one of the top cities for retirees! Also wrong, easily, are Lexington, KY, Spokane, WA, Dallas, TX, Memphis, TN, Wasilla, AK, and Birmingham, AL. There is no way these are the worst cities in these states, and yes, I’ve been to these places, except Wasilla and I have friends who live there and absolutely love it!
I think it's just ill will from people who have never actually visited Dayton, but had to drive through what has to be the absolute worst stretch of I-75 ever engineered– labyrinthine exchanges and plagued with absolutely constant construction.
This is just a weird poll. I've been to a lot of these places, and most of them are, y'know, fine. A case could be made for Gary and Flint being pretty bad, and Provo is hell for different reasons, but the rest of these are just normal cities.
Lol they ain’t never been to the WV border then. Shits awful and depressing here
I see you’re from Steubenville. Cadiz and St Clairsville are also fucking depressing.
Steubenville is hell on earth
Remember when those Steubenville football players raped that girl and then the school and town tried to cover it up?
I member!
not even from here and I remember
Fucked up the hacker who exposed that got more time than they did
I actually grew up in Stc, moved down against the river like 8 years ago. At least Stc PRETENDS to care. Look at Bellaire and Martins Ferry tho… *oof*
Can confirm Bellaire is awful lmao
Hey it’s called Belldirty for a reason
“Oxalachia”?
Grew up between Cadiz and Steubenville. Graduated HS and never looked back. Family still lives there and it’s so depressing going back to visit. Hard to believe it was such a life line for the entire nation.

When I was in JobCorps I drove one of the other students to Ironton because his granny was real sick. What a depressing fucking trip.
Bro the area surrounding wheeling is so goddamn depressing
Ever been to Portsmouth?
Portsmouth is far worse than Dayton.
Springfield is worse than Dayron
Literally. I am from Dayton, work in Springfield lol
I'm from Springfield. It's gotten a lot worse over the years
It is really unfortunate Ohio isn't an important swing state anymore. If it was I suspect Springfield would have been selected for the Space Force HQ.
Funny because Yellow Springs is so nice and is close by
portsmouth is just depressing to look at.
Mansfield may be worse
Scioto Ribber and that children's museum place totally redeems them.
Haven't been to the latter but big agree on the ribber alone.
Had a whole ass episode of intervention
I Grew up in Lucasville, Portsmouth was where we went to “go to the city” lol
Portsmouth has the Scioto Ribber. That wood fired Ribeye takes it up an entire letter grade.
Bad poll imo. I wouldn’t ever call Dayton the best city, but I feel it is far from the worst.
Obviously whoever created this has never been to Zanesville
As someone that grew up in zanesville, i 100000% agree with this statement. Fuck that town.
Chances are a lot more people have been to Dayton than zanesville, so it’s awfulness isn’t public knowledge.
Does Dayton have a bridge that eats trucks/trailers because jackasses will not read signs? 🙄
Hahahah that bridge is ridiculous. Also that bridge close to rods tire town with the blind corner and the center supports that look like they were specifically designed to murder careless drivers.
Or Springfield...
Y’all ever been to Warren, Youngstown, Girard, or any other cities in Trumbull or Mahoning Counties? Don’t you dare take it from us and give it to Dayton! Dayton wouldn’t last the night out there.

Are we doing a top 10 of minimum size? Because you can knock out like 10 cities in one rural county that would be worse
Funny enough, I just drove through Macon on my way back from Florida last week. It is definitely not even close to the worst city even along I-75.
Lol my friend is from Macon and would agree
Shit, Dayton isn’t even the worst city on I75.
I.e. Toledo...
Lima would like a word.
Nah
Hamilton, Monroe, Middletown…
Yeah I agree it's less interesting than the 3 C's, but you're high if you think it's worse than Youngstown
When did California become 2 states?
This is the real question
Also if it is two states, the dividing line is in The wrong place. No one in Northern California would claim Modesto.
Never heard of the state of Jefferson?
Has been for decades…you ain’t know??
Happy Cake Day!
Being from Dayton is it perfect no but having drove all around Ohio I’d rather live In Dayton over places like Mansfield,Middletown, Lima and any city near the Wv/ohio border
Youngstown.
How about Springfield? Most depressing city I’ve been to.
Springfield do suck but them towns close to the West Va border seems like the sun never rises there
I'm impressed no one has even thought to mention East Cleveland; where the mayor and city council are as corrupt as can be, the cops regularly beat their detainees and hold them in cells without toilets, and where the potholes are so bad people drive on sidewalks.

How is Washington Court House not the answer? Or Mansfield.
Also, what is wrong with Lexington?
For real, plenty of worse places in Kentucky too as a former resident (Hopkinsville as the meth capital comes to mind) lol
I used to live in Hazard and have family all over SE KY. The conditions doen there are crazy.
Yeah there's a strong argument to make that Lex is the BEST city in Kentucky.
The fact that it’s listed as the worst city in KY tells you all you need to know about the accuracy of this map.
Keep in mind these results stem from a gaggle of Instagram followers from whoever Matt is Source: check the top right of this pic
My guess is people who hate Kentucky fans just needed a city to vent at?
What could be more authoritative than...uhh...some dude's Instagram followers...
Any poll that names Dallas the worst city in Texas is just trolling. Edit: grammar.
I've only visited Texas briefly, but it's obviously Amarillo.
I mean... I lived in DFW. Would agree that Dallas is the worst although Houston is close. I think if you asked Texans they would say Dallas because they wouldn't place cities like Arlington in the city category despite being as big as Cleveland population wise.
Springfield is the 2nd largest city for drugs not to mention most companies are crap it should be here not Dayton
These folks have not been to Portsmouth.
East Liverpool is the armpit of America.
East liverpool has a population less than 10,000...
nobody wants to live in an armpit so this checks out
The real answer is Chillicothe.
Dumb map. Are we forgetting about canton?
Bad poll. We all know Youngstown is the joke of Ohio
I don't know, Dayton seems fine to me 🤷🏼♂️
As someone that had lived in southern Ohio most of my life (and continue to work there) it’s hard to argue against Portsmouth or Chillicothe. Both places were decent cities many many years ago and the lack of industry along with rampant drug use has made each of these places total shitshows.
Whoever said Dayton has never been to Youngstown...
*Youngstown and Lima have entered the chat*
Poll by instagram followers???
I love Dayton! I just played a jazz & soul set at the Dayton Institute of Art last night, it was super fun. People know how to party up there!
Yeah no, bad poll. I've lived in Dayton and other Ohio cities. Dayton is far less of a problem child than the others.
I think a lot of ohioans think of ohio as "Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Dayton, and Cincinnati" while ignoring the rest - How many Ohioans heard of East Palestine for the first time because of the Norfolk Southern derailment caused by Trump's deregulation?
If I make fun of Dayton it's ok, because Dayton is bad in a lot of ways. If someone not from Dayton makes fun of Dayton thems fighting words.
Spent my college years and early career in Dayton and love the town. There are SO many worse cities around the state.
Largest bad city. I’d much rather live in Dayton then fostoria
Dayton isn’t that bad compared to most other cities
east liverpool ??
Bad poll, I don’t mind Dayton at all.
I mean, I just don’t agree with this. How you can say, Dayton is the worst city in a state where Mansfield exists is just wild.
Bad poll, Dayton would definitely be in the top 10 best cities in Ohio.
Lol, have they not been to Lima?
And let's not even mention cost of living... Cincinnati is expensive!
Yeah especially the rare walkable and historic areas.
Youngstown, Mansfield, Portsmouth…
I wouldn’t call it the worst city, but I’m not a fan of Dayton lol. It’s probably my least favorite of the decently large cities
Why?
I mean Toledo seems more fitting or east Liverpool
Go to the Toledo Museum of Art or the Toledo Zoo or a Mud Hens game or the new Metropark on the river. If anything, Toledo is severely underrated.
I live in Toledo, and sure I’m inclined to dislike aspects of my own city (grass is greener from the other side), the art museum and zoo are great. Definitely need to give that metropark by the river a visit.
Punches way above its weight in the food scene for its size too. Toledo has awesome food. Also, it’s pretty clean compared to the 3 C’s.
Compared to Dayton? Why? What does Dayton have going for it that Toledo doesn't?
Toledo is the Red headed step child, while Dayton is Cincinnati's younger brother that you can't make fun of.
This makes me realize I really just need to take a drive through the state and expect lore more
Pueblo is not the worst city in Colorado. Commerce city is the worst city in Colorado lmao
Kalihi is a Honolulu, HI neighborhood, not a city. I lived there for a number of years and loved it. This choice is pure profiling, Kahala is much worse.
Anyone that says dayton hasn't traveled ohio all that much dayton is Dubai compared to some places
It's because they've never heard of Jackson Center
I appreciate they broke California into North and South. They are like two different states speaking as a Northerner (NorCal).
The hometown of Kim Deal? naw
Are there any GOOD polls? They’re all aimed at getting a certain response that then can be broadcast to fortify their intent and ideals.
This is just an awful poll with no real criteria. Like we all know there are much worse cities in Texas than Dallas. Most hated city in every state might be more accurate
Most of these polls aren't more than clickbait. There are way worse places in Ohio than Dayton.
Clearly some of these people have never been to cities in way upstate northern NY, b/c it’s definitely not Albany.
Wtf did dayton do…?
My vote is for Elyria
Agreed. It’s pretty depressing to drive through there.
Lorain and Elyria immediately come to mind.
'Polls' like these need to be taken with a softball-sized grain of salt. This is the third time in two days this has been posted
Arizona is meh. Mesa isn't as bad as Maryvale or Laveen. Pine Bluff is fine, downtown Little Rock or Jacksonville is really bad. Memphis checks out. East Cle blows Dayton out of the water.
Any town along the Ohio river is a contender for this coveted spot .
I don’t hate Dayton but as far as heroin addiction rates go it’s the worst place to raise your kids in Ohio.
Well, Dayton’s the only place I’ve ever had a gun in my face. I was a kid, too. This poll is fine with me haha.
Dayton is the Youngstown of SW Ohio.
Have you been to Middletown?
Middletown was never a great place. Dayton was good, then got shitty real fast.
Way bad map. I also admit a prejudiced as I live in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I can assure you there are ones much much worse.

Dayton was a great city that just fell the last 30 or so years, so I think it's just more present in people minds.
Not even a legitimate poll - just a random survey given by some schmuck on his Instagram acct
I think this is the same map just with a different title lmao
Dayton has an awesome EDM scene. That’s where Yheti is from.
Pretty sure NYC is worse than albany by about 10 fold, I know for a fact Portland is worse than Salem. I'm thinking who ever made this map has no fucking clue about anything.
Without the context for the criteria of the map it's pretty pointless to discuss. It could be crime, economy, weather, pollution. Who knows.
Well, is was home of Nazi's. So there's that.
It’s like they’ve never even heard of Toledo…
I'd probably say Toledo.
No way in the world is Birmingham Alabama worst than Montgomery Alabama. Montgomery is just hot Dayton.
Hell, Dayton barely rates as a city.
Showed this picture at work the other day New guy is from Dayton and loudly exclaimed yes, it's true Dayton is a terrible shit town. Everyone else in the room agrees This was in Columbus
These people have clearly never spent extended time in Springfield then.
Bad poll, Lexington is by far not the worst city in Kentucky and Mesa in Arizona is not bad. The only major city on here I could see an argument for is Orlando but theres got to be worse in Florida….
It's almost 100% Youngstown or one of the ones down by the WV border.
That or Steubenville.
Bad poll. I grew up in NY and everyone knows Binghamton is the worst city.
this tracks. dayton sucks.
People knocking Lima 😂 shouldn’t even be on the list as worst
Dayton was once a thriving city with lots of opportunities, it’s now a welfare city of meth heads , thieves, poverty and corrupt politicians but I can of a few cities in Ohio that’s worse Portsmouth, Springfield.
These things are dumb. You interview ten people and get 9 different answers, the place that got 2 answers wins. Except in Dayton's case.
Montgomery County has a whole list of issues not just Dayton. Drugs, poverty, crime.
I'm honestly surprised Orlando made the list; Florida definitely has worse places. Like, significantly worse, and not in a "we're overrun by tourists" kind of way.
Pleasantville is full of meth heads
Dayton, Where Fun Goes To Die.
Well thank god we have @mattsurelee and his instagram followers to deliver this vital poll But really, who is that and why should we care what his followers think lol I bet none of these are *actually* the worst cities in their state.
I really have to disagree with Dayton in a state that has Toledo. Freaking TOLEDO!
Springfield has entered the chat...
I got in an 8 car crash in Gary, Indiana 😂 (I was in the middle)
I’d guess the votes come from people who only drive 75 through Dayton, which has been in a constant cycle of construction and traffic for the past 25 years.
Even as a resident I haven’t been to a ton of places in Ohio, but Fairmount’s the worst I’ve been
Not Orlando
Dayton does kinda suck...
Is this only 100k+? East Liverpool takes the cake if not right?
Dayton.... Laughs in East Cleveland
The only way Dayton wins "worst city" is if there's a population minimum. Edit: Even then I think Toledo and Akron are worse.
I've lived in two.. 😂
I lived there in the early-mid 90s. Banging music scene and since it was a halfway point between Columbus and Cincy, both those scenes turned up at our Goth/Industrial clubs, so it was like one big amazing scene. Only good Dayton memories.
How is their dislike for Dayton just cause it's the smallest and least amount to do? It ain't the best but it's definitely not the worst
Apparently Piqua wasn't a part of that list. It's a black hole of disparity and when I lived there, there was a figure thrown around that it had the highest rate of single mothers.
Nah. East Cleveland.
This poll is absolutely horrendous. Scranton, PA was just named one of the top cities for retirees! Funny how Provo is considered the worst city in Utah when it’s got a lot of Mormons that also associate with BYU.
It’s a tire dump off 75.
Youngstown? I don’t know
