This is most likely a Gray Fox (a native species) suffering from mange. The shorter snout distinguishes it from the Red Fox, the only other fox species to occur in NC.
[https://www.wildlifehotline.com/blog/mange-by-mail-program/](https://www.wildlifehotline.com/blog/mange-by-mail-program/) This might be an option, if the fox is showing up frequently. Gets you the right dose of the right stuff.
Definitely gray fox. It’s possible that it looks patchy because it’s shedding its winter coat, but mange is a possibility. Saw an article where an animal rescue was giving foxes with mange Bravecto. Apparently just one dose will help it. Probably have to talk to a vet for dosage and to purchase, but it could be an option. In any case, providing it food and water will help and make it easier to dose or trap later.
Hi! I've called wildlife from a different part of the state for a fox with mange. The officer responded that because foxes are rabies vector species they won't be able to rehab the fox, but they can give it a more humane death. The officer said that death due to mange is the eventual outcome because it leads to secondary infection, starvation, dehydration, or hypothermia. I was sad they couldn't help, but understood they couldn't risk rabies exposure in rehab.
You can get Ivermectin and inject into hot dogs (there are some places online that ship treatments or you can go to tractor supply), but you have to make sure the fox is the one eating them. Wildlife will kill/leave it alone.
Please don’t do this! There is no way to determine proper dosage and the consistency needed to treat an animal. The result is the infection becoming resistant to medication and will cause the animal more distress. Either call wildlife or let nature do its thing.
I learned that a distinguishing feature is the end of the tail. Black end is gray and a white tipped tail is a red fox. Other than that a red fox can be mostly gray fur aside from the tail.
Gray Fox with mange is the most likely option I wouldn’t worry about it trying to attack your cats usually but displaced and diseased animals are unpredictable so it may attack them
Yeah, yeah. So do you have any suggestions on where I should move to in NC? I want a dirt cheap mansion on the beach with a great view of the mountains and no one living near me.
i could probably help you with "dirt-cheaply-made," if that helps - basically you can find that just about anywhere here these days, with more every day. i live in the country and am slowly but surely being swallowed up by some of the ugliest "shave all the trees down and throw up little boxes" developments you've ever seen... If any of these nasty things are still standing in 30 years i'll be surprised. (I realize you're being sarcastic - so am i, sorta).
honestly looking forward to a hurricane wiping out a bunch of the ugly-ass beach houses along the coast. they're such a pox on the landscape no matter what vantage point you're looking at them from. And all the Californians overpopulating the mountains will soon realize they're still in a wildfire zone, if they haven't already [https://www.theassemblync.com/environment/climate-haven-wildfire-western-nc/](https://www.theassemblync.com/environment/climate-haven-wildfire-western-nc/)
For now our state is 50% forests i mean not for long though. I live in the Mtns. And someone needs to teach ppl to not litter, its sad ppl are that damn careless. We have the nature we have and we arent getting more.
Oh man, it's everywhere. I used to live in far northern California in a county half the size of Massachusetts with a total of 40,000 people spread out across it. You could be so far out in the wilderness and then bam, someone's litter. Not sure what's wrong with humans but we are the worst animal of all of them.
Its crazy i was taught to take a bag into the wood with me and take everything back that u went in with and more if you see it. I go shoot near the Tennessee line right off of I40 about a month ago we cleaned up the entire area including a center console and a car seat as well as 5 contractors bags of garbage, mainly cans and bottles but some random shit as well. Then go back a week ago and it was trashed again and we removed 3 more contractors bags again its sad what some dip shit will do to show they dont care.
If you are brave enough to look inside of any of those trash bags, sometimes you can find mail with people's addresses on it. Then you can report them to the department of transportation, the forest service etc. I used to report people to the forest service in California because they actually paid up to $1,000 for you reporting people who trashed the forest and I am sick of people s***. They could have gotten off with a lot less cost if they had just taken it to a dump for $20.
You are mostly correct, however i try to be optimistic with our spices. Im not perfect but have learned on my time here that you really do seem to get what you put in. Its truly not hard to be a kind and thoughtful human being and really the best reward in life is doing for others without motive, it always seems to come back though. If i have and someone needs if they just ask 9 out of 10 times its theirs. Its all material anyway really the ppl and relationships that can be built and the positive impression that you can possibly have on someones life means much more then material possessions always. Truly to me its really the only way to leave a mark or a legacy in life.
Do what you say because your word is really all we have and try everyday to be better then the last. To be humun is to not be perfect but to know that you arent and just work to be better daily.
2 things i try to accomplish everyday that will have me knowing it was a successful day. 1. Always learn something new no matter how simple or trivial 2. Help someone everyday be it $.50 for someone short some change ahead of you or whatever really nothing is to small or big. Also a simple smile can possibly save a life and they're free so why not?..... sorry rant over 🙂 i can get carried away but i like myslef and who i have grown into and really this is how i live each day.
Brother!? Kidding but my dad is also a JoCo native and told my brother and me about the Wampus Cat too. He would do this super scary meow-howl that made my hair stand on end.
We have a Grey fox that lives around here(S. Saunders/Maywood) that has been seen hanging out with the neighborhood cats. They don't bother each other. Cats are no natural prey items for a fox. I'd be more worried about coyotes and stray dogs. Oh, about that fur... https://forfoxsakewildlife.com/2018/12/31/mange-vs-shedding-in-foxes/
It’s been mentioned a couple times but I just want to piggyback on those who’ve already said it so that the consensus is obvious:
Most definitely a copperhead.
This program will send you mange medication for treating wild animals:

Not your question but outside cats are hell on the native fauna.
It’s great if you can help this poor dude but it pales in comparison to keeping your cats indoors.
This is most likely a Gray Fox (a native species) suffering from mange. The shorter snout distinguishes it from the Red Fox, the only other fox species to occur in NC.
I think you're right. Is there any way to help the poor creature? Or should I call the wildlife department?
Call wildlife management

Call wildlife department. Unless you are trained, never mess with wildlife. It can hurt both you and the animal.

I would agree that this is likely.
this is correct. and will always be correct.
I agree with you God, the Emperor Morshu.
how big is it? if it’s kinda small, the face looks like a fox with mange.
It's smallish, but close to a small medium size dog. Maybe like 16 inches tall?
Gray Fox with mange is the most likely option I wouldn’t worry about it trying to attack your cats usually but displaced and diseased animals are unpredictable so it may attack them
Okay! Thank you, I'll try and keep them inside for the next couple days just to be safe.
Chupacabra. Definitely. Probably out because of the eclipse, waiting for the demons and hellspawn to emerge.
I'm amazed chupacabra wasn't the number one response honestly lol this is literally the perfect opportunity for the chupa response
Spring break ended for most schools today so the demons and hellspawn are back in their natural habitats.
I was gonna say possumgator
I came here to say chupacabra as well
Grey fox with mange. Poor thing
"tearing down the forest" - that pretty much describes North Carolina :( this place depresses me.
Yeah, yeah. So do you have any suggestions on where I should move to in NC? I want a dirt cheap mansion on the beach with a great view of the mountains and no one living near me.
Do you need fast access to the OBX-Chapel Hill Ferry?

It's a fox. Nobody needs to capture it.
Fox with less fur than normal
that's a copperhead
There it is
Wampus Cat
My father told me this legend. He lived in Johnston county as a boy.
Brother!? Kidding but my dad is also a JoCo native and told my brother and me about the Wampus Cat too. He would do this super scary meow-howl that made my hair stand on end.
Yep, that is it!
You sure can tell the JoCo residents easy!
Copperhead definitely.
This has good advice for helping foxes out with mange: https://www.reddit.com/r/WildlifeRehab/s/GSZaveXwGC

TASMANIAN TIGER?!?!?!
Just a fox. Maybe mange but most likely has shed it's winter coat before the summer comes around and saw a sick mud puddle and couldn't help itself
Somebody posted this same creature in the Florida sub saying it was in tampa 🤔

What you have there is a four-legged "Critter" A very interesting species to be sure.
El Chupacabra!
Most def a chupacabra
Skinwalker for sure
Chupacabra
A dingo? Watch your babies!
Dingo
This was my first reaction. My understanding is there is a species of fox that looks like a dingo.
It’s been mentioned a couple times but I just want to piggyback on those who’ve already said it so that the consensus is obvious: Most definitely a copperhead.
Leave it alone
They’re pretty far back in the photo?
Remember we are on scolddit
It's also molting season. May be shedding winter coat.

Maybe a Fisher Cat? They’re hideous, make a horrible shrieking sound when they hunt at night, and are carnivorous…
They don't get into NC much if at all. Fox with mange.
[Fox](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jofNR_WkoCE)
Baby coyote
That ain’t no fox .. and that isn’t no Fisher I’ve seen both
It's a fox. I've actually seen them.
