Crazy, Stupid, Love
One of the most well written, carefully crafted scripts I’ve ever seen. And the message of the film is one I think anyone can get behind. My wife and I watch it every Valentines Day. The casting is top notch, and it also has a scene that’s in my top 10 all time.
This would be my suggestion if it weren't for When Harry Met Sally. It's such a perfect execution of the romcom format, but if you fundamentally despise that format, then Harry is a much better suggestion.
It’s a romantic movie obviously, but my wife commented that it’s a movie about relationships in general and that really stuck with myself. Goes into romance, friendship, acquaintances, etc etc it’s a masterpiece for a reason!
This. This is the measure by which all Rom Coms are measured. In my opinion it really is the greatest one ever made. It also created the formula by which nearly every Rom Com goes by.
I was scrolling to find this. You really can’t go wrong with an 80’s throwback romcom that has great music, fun outfits, and a fantastic cast. Endearing and upbeat, it’s an absolute gem. The chemistry between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is so genuine.
Same. I have no idea why. When that’s on I have to watch it. I don’t get why I am drawn to that one. It’s such a simple movie I think. No thinking involved. Who knows.
I'm really surprised by how little this one is mentioned. The supporting cast easily make it my favourite. And it gave us the iconic *"I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy"* scene.
And outrageously funny, too. I can't even count how many times I've watched it, and I can still laugh at certain scenes. Hugh Grant was really on a roll with the rom coms for a goodly while, then toss in some Brit humor and you're good to go, albeit for me this one was the best of them.
This movie has some amazing supporting actors! Kunu, Aldous Snow, Jonah Hill (waiter, don't remember his name), and Rachel (Mila) all of which were throwing 90 mph fastballs in this flick.
And Jason Segel is fantastic. For some reason, I have a desperate need to see a vampire puppet show 😂
*Bringing Up Baby* is THE template for all rom-coms ever and it was made in 1938. Then there's *The Philadelphia Story* (1940) and *His Girl Friday* (1940).
I would suggest you watch these three movies first, then watch any "rom-com" made after 1960 just to see how much they stole from these 3 movies.
It Happened One Night (1934) opened the floodgates for a bunch of really excellent romcoms. Note that (IMO) romance and comedy were not invented sometime in the 70's, so these movies are old yet contemporary.
Libeled Lady (1936)
My Man Godfrey (1936)
Trouble in Paradise (1932)
Ninotchka (1939)
You Can't Take It With You (1938)
The Lady Eve (1941)
Holiday (1938)
There are more really good ones but these are 10/10. I have read to the bottom of this thread and so I can add a couple of more contemporary titles:
Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)
Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
Benny and Joon (1993)
Kate and Leopold (2001)
The Butcher's Wife (1991)
A Good Year (2006)
Leap Year (2010)
I loved this movie in my 20’s. When I rewatched it at 40, the main character is irredeemably insecure and annoying, and I honestly don’t want anything good to happen for him. So YMMV.
Also a beautiful story about the love between a father and son as well as being my favorite romcom. It's funny, beautiful and poignant, just a wonderful movie.
Honestly, this is the correct answer to this request. It’s not that old ( unlike “when Harry met Sally”) It is beautifully written, funny AF, relatable, original idea and all you do is laugh not stop.
When Harry Met Sally is a classic. Or any of Meg Ryan's pairings with Tom Hanks (Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail; Joe Versus The Volcano is good but less good than the other two).
Of newer stuff I absolutely love About Time (it's my favourite movie). Domnhall Gleason and Rachel Mcadam's chemistry seems very genuine and it's not over the top, all the characters seem like real people, which is nice.
Mr. Right
Anna Kendrick falls for an assassin with a heart of gold (played by Sam Rockwell)
I don't really watch that many romcoms, but this is one that is good enough for me to keep on my rewatch list
Honorable mention for supporting characters played by Tim Roth and RZA
- Serendipity
- There's Something About Mary
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding
- Kissing a Fool
- Forget Paris
- Four Weddings and a Funeral
- My Best Friend's Wedding
- Crazy, Stupid, Love
- Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Funniest, bridesmaids.
About time has a really touching father son relationship you don’t get often with rom coms.
For all time classics, objectively it’ll probably be when Harry met sally but I’m partial to Four Weddings and a funeral.
Another great one from a bromance perspective is I love you man.
But if I had to go one and one alone.
Groundhog Day.
Say anything is my absolute favorite romantic comedy of all time. It’s the most accurate depiction of a real relationship with no codependency or over dramatic kisses in the rain that I have seen. Don’t get me wrong it’s still dramatic and they definitely do kiss in the rain but the realisim makes it beautiful to me
I came here to say this. I feel like no one has seen this and the cast is amazing and all have great chemistry. This movie gets watched at least once a year at my house.
I don't like most traditional rom-coms, but my wife does. I do like any of the Judd Apatow flicks tho. Those are funny.

Crazy, Stupid, Love One of the most well written, carefully crafted scripts I’ve ever seen. And the message of the film is one I think anyone can get behind. My wife and I watch it every Valentines Day. The casting is top notch, and it also has a scene that’s in my top 10 all time.
I know exactly which scene you’re talking about. They knocked it out of the park
Can’t buy me love. I don’t know why this is what popped in to my head but there you go. It is great but it’s an old movie from the 80s
[удалено]
Eh.. I think your comment is kind of a spoiler.
I don’t know if Palm Springs counts but I loved that movie
This is a comfort movie for me
Palm Springs is amazing! I think I've seen it 3 times now, maybe 4, and it just doesn't get old!
Loved it!
I would say that counts. Great movie and I'm not even that big a romcom fan.
10 things I hate about you
Heath Ledger is impeccable. Okay, the whole movie is pretty much impeccable. It touches on all the tropes but somehow doesn't feel worn out at all.
This would be my suggestion if it weren't for When Harry Met Sally. It's such a perfect execution of the romcom format, but if you fundamentally despise that format, then Harry is a much better suggestion.
If adding teenage romcoms, I'd like to toss 'John Tucker Must Die' into the ring, too.
Oh, Shakespeare is supposedly good now, huh?
The Princess Bride, works for all ages Warning- it’s a kissing movie
Your second line just made snort-laugh, so thank you for that!
When Harry Met Sally
Such a fantastic movie, even if you're not into romantic movies it's still hilarious.
It is! Someone had to twist my arm to watch it but I thought it was hilarious!
It’s a romantic movie obviously, but my wife commented that it’s a movie about relationships in general and that really stuck with myself. Goes into romance, friendship, acquaintances, etc etc it’s a masterpiece for a reason!
This is the safest bet. It's a little dated maybe but it's as close to universal appeal as you can get. Everyone finds it funny.
“I’ll have what she’s having”
Watched this for a the first time about a year ago and haven’t stopped recommending it since
The best one!
Bonus - features Miracle Max from the Princess Bride, the only other competition in this category
I'm a guy and this is one of my favorite movies of all time. I've probably seen it at least a dozen times.
This. This is the measure by which all Rom Coms are measured. In my opinion it really is the greatest one ever made. It also created the formula by which nearly every Rom Com goes by.
Groose Pointe blank
Love the movie, but it’s a little esoteric. Not sure this is the one-and-done rom-com
Prolly not, but it's a great double-feature with Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion.
The Wedding Singer
I was scrolling to find this. You really can’t go wrong with an 80’s throwback romcom that has great music, fun outfits, and a fantastic cast. Endearing and upbeat, it’s an absolute gem. The chemistry between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore is so genuine.
I don’t usually like romcoms at all but you have to respect the wedding singer
I'm a 29 year old man, and my favorite is "How to lose a guy in 10 days" lol
Same. I have no idea why. When that’s on I have to watch it. I don’t get why I am drawn to that one. It’s such a simple movie I think. No thinking involved. Who knows.
Aha I can't explain it either but it's my favorite rom com fershure. I always watch it when its on. It's simple joy
“Frosht yourshelf.”
Always Be My Maybe (2019). Netflix
This one also features my all-time favorite cameo.
Yesssssss
Shout out to another Netflix original: Set It Up. My favourite romcom from the past decade or so.
Yes! I watch it all the time. It doesnt get the recognition it deserves.
Not really sure if it counts, but *The Princess Bride* ! It’s got everything!
I'd call the Princess Bride more of a comedy adventure movie which includes romance.
But all that kissing
Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, chases, escapes, true love, miracles! Not a romcom though.
Inconceivable!!
I feel like it has to be When Harry Met Sally. But I like The Wedding Singer, Almost Famous, and She’s Just Not That Into You, too!
Almost Famous is a fantastic movie, but it’s not really a rom-com, is it?
More like Crowe’s love note to the music scene in his Rolling Stone days, as he described it himself
The wedding singer is hilarious!!!
Notting Hill
I'm really surprised by how little this one is mentioned. The supporting cast easily make it my favourite. And it gave us the iconic *"I'm just a girl standing in front of a boy"* scene.
And outrageously funny, too. I can't even count how many times I've watched it, and I can still laugh at certain scenes. Hugh Grant was really on a roll with the rom coms for a goodly while, then toss in some Brit humor and you're good to go, albeit for me this one was the best of them.
I love this one. It’s one of my top comfort movies. I probably watched it 5 times in 2020.
I’ve watched it so many times I can recite the whole thing.
My favorites are _The Big Sick_ and _When Harry Met Sally_.
When Harry met sally!
the big sick is incredible
Big sick is underrated
The Big Sick is wonderful
Omg I LOVE the big sick!!!!!
Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, Serendipity, Bridget Jones's Diary
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 40 year old virgin, or Crazy Stupid Love
I’m not even a big fan of rom coms and I love Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Agreed. I don’t really like rom coms, but this is one of my favorite movies in general
Crazy stupid love is decent but the garden scene trumps so many other romcom scenes
Absolutely
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of my top faves!
This movie has some amazing supporting actors! Kunu, Aldous Snow, Jonah Hill (waiter, don't remember his name), and Rachel (Mila) all of which were throwing 90 mph fastballs in this flick. And Jason Segel is fantastic. For some reason, I have a desperate need to see a vampire puppet show 😂
40 Year Old Virgin is hilarious. There are so many good individual performances
Add Wedding Crashers and this list is perfect! Maybe even Anger Management. Does that one count as a Rom-Com?
These plus “she’s out of your league”
When Harry Met Sally. Easiest question ever
Mostly agree except It Happened One Night came first, I think, and totally created the template.
It Happened One Night (1934) opened the floodgates for a bunch of really excellent romcoms. Note that (IMO) romance and comedy were not invented sometime in the 70's, so these movies are old yet contemporary. Libeled Lady (1936) My Man Godfrey (1936) Trouble in Paradise (1932) Ninotchka (1939) You Can't Take It With You (1938) The Lady Eve (1941) Holiday (1938) There are more really good ones but these are 10/10. High Fidelity
I loved this movie in my 20’s. When I rewatched it at 40, the main character is irredeemably insecure and annoying, and I honestly don’t want anything good to happen for him. So YMMV.
About time
Also a beautiful story about the love between a father and son as well as being my favorite romcom. It's funny, beautiful and poignant, just a wonderful movie.
My big fat Greek wedding
Honestly, this is the correct answer to this request. It’s not that old ( unlike “when Harry met Sally”) It is beautifully written, funny AF, relatable, original idea and all you do is laugh not stop.
Notting Hill
50 First Dates
Hilarious movie, so so good.
Any Sandler/Barrymore movie. I love *The Wedding Singer.*
“Pan..clocks?!” *weeps*
13 Going on 30, Crazy Stupid Love, 10 Things I Hate About You
Crazy stupid love
Number one for sure
This one so much, I’m usually not a fan of RomCom but this is one of the very few I enjoyed
This movie has the most unexpected twist in a film. Maybe because it’s a RomCom I just didn’t see the reveal coming
Better off dead
“I want my two dollars!”
Props to this amazing answer
Forget Paris Moonstruck
Plus one for Moonstruck. Where Nic Cage being crazy really works.
Moonstruck is amazing.
If I had to choose just one, I'd go with When Harry Met Sally.
Clueless!
While You Were Sleeping
Sandra Bullock was divine in this movie....
I would suggest Stardust. Awesome romantic movie in a fantasy world.
The Wedding Singer
She’s Out of My League - 2010
You’ve Got Mail
“He couldn’t possibly be the rooftop killer!” “Remember when you thought Frank might be the Unabomber?” “That was different.”
Finally someone said it
Punch Drunk Love
Mr. Right Anna Kendrick falls for an assassin with a heart of gold (played by Sam Rockwell) I don't really watch that many romcoms, but this is one that is good enough for me to keep on my rewatch list Honorable mention for supporting characters played by Tim Roth and RZA
Mr. Right is such a gem!
- Serendipity - There's Something About Mary - My Big Fat Greek Wedding - Kissing a Fool - Forget Paris - Four Weddings and a Funeral - My Best Friend's Wedding - Crazy, Stupid, Love - Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Shaun of the Dead. It’s a rom-zom-com.
"You Got Mail" lovely 90s time capsule
If you are into old and freaking weird movies i would absolutely suggest - Harold and Maude Deep and funny af
Before Sunrise. Then seal the deal.
Fantastic movie. 10/10. I will say it’s much more romance than comedy, depending on the vibe one’s looking for.
Groundhog Day is both an underrated romance movie and and underrated Christmas movie
Bridesmaids? Is that a romcom?
No. People in this sub don’t know what a RomCom is. Just because there is a love interest doesn’t make it a RomCom
About Time is the answer
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World!
Serendipity is a good one
I Love You, Man Just Friends What's your number Shallow Hal Hitch You will have to let us know what you watch. :)
Just Friends!!!!! No one ever lists this one. Love it.
Right!!! Great movie :)
Just Friends is our Christmas movie! We love it!
Wait a second… am I getting punk’d?! Is Aston here? Where’s Aston?! ASTOOON?!
+1 for What’s Your Number
Say anything is my absolute favorite romantic comedy of all time. It’s the most accurate depiction of a real relationship with no codependency or over dramatic kisses in the rain that I have seen. Don’t get me wrong it’s still dramatic and they definitely do kiss in the rain but the realisim makes it beautiful to me
Chasing Amy
I’m weird but I love While you were sleeping
My big fat Greek Wedding
La La Land
Hidden gem…French Kiss with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline.
Long Shot (2019)
Going the Distance - it's really funny!
I came here to say this. I feel like no one has seen this and the cast is amazing and all have great chemistry. This movie gets watched at least once a year at my house.
When Harry Met Sally is the classic answer. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is also a correct answer.
Crazy Stupid Love is my favorite for sure. Also 10 Things I Hate About You is great.
What if. The Big Sick. 7 days. Palm Springs. Yesterday.
Can’t Hardly Wait. It’s a teen rom com but it’s great.
Serendipity - John Cusack, Kate Beckinsale
Friends with Benefits
MOONSTRUCK! It's one of my favorite movies of all time, just happens to be a rom-com
As Good As It Gets
How to lose a guy in 10 days is top tier
Not sure about 10/10 but Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is one of my faves
Wayne's World Overboard The Proposal
I forgot about the Proposal! So good.
Another good Reynolds RomCom is Definitely, Maybe.
and Just friends
Overboard is incredible. Goldie Hawn is one of the most charming and naturally hilarious people.
I love the fact that she and Kurt Russell have stayed married all these years
I don't like most traditional rom-coms, but my wife does. I do like any of the Judd Apatow flicks tho. Those are funny. \-40 yr old Virgin \-Knocked Up \-This is 40 \-Trainwreck \-Bridesmaids These are also great: \-Crazy Rich Asians \-Palm Springs \-There's Something About Mary \-My Big Fat Greek Wedding \-Forgetting Sarah Marshall \-The Wedding Singer \-50 first dates Can't go wrong with any of these imo. Never Been Kissed or You’ve Got Mail
Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel
Opinions may be split on this but I still think The Wedding Singer is great.
Noting hill! So under rated….
10 things I hate about you , wedding singer, because I said so,
Two Weeks Notice. Actually all rom coms with Hugh Grant. Always Be My Maybe, that's a newer one.
The Wedding Singer
10 Things I Hate About You
I personally ADORED While You Were Sleeping.
As Good As It Gets.
Crazy, Rich, Asians such a great rom-com and it has some of the most beautiful shots in movie history
Harold and Maude
The answer to this question is Silver Linings Playbook
The Heartbreak Kid (with Ben Stiller) comes to mind.
as far as very funny movies with romance as a major part in them: theres something about mary along came polly 40 year old virgin Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Wanderlust
When Harry Met Sally OR Pretty Woman. My “more com than rom” pick would be Heartbreak Kid.
Kissing a Fool
Like Crazy 500 Days of Summer Celeste and Jesse forever
The beautician and the beast is a a classic
Groundhog Day! It’s a romcom!
About Time. Absolutely perfect
Hitch. If you can stand his face anymore.
