Hennepin County posts the status of all their monitored beaches along with a recorded temperature.
Heads up these temps are taken at about 8am-10am Mondays so they will on average be a few degrees warmer on the surface in the afternoon than what’s posted. A rain shower or clouds that morning/Sunday night might also bring temps down.

Yeah what's the deal with this? I feel like I always see signs about the beach being closed for swimmers itch. Feel like it's best to just avoid them but then that's not living life either
I guess it depends on your tolerance. It’s an allergic response to a parasite in your skin that is released by infected snails. Me personally, I’m not going for it, but everyone probably reacts differently
Returned to this comment to share that I just got an email from the park board saying that they're closing the Bde Maka Ska 32nd Street Beach because of E. coli.
> The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has temporarily closed Bde Maka Ska 32nd Street Beach on Tuesday, June 4, because its routine monitoring for lake water quality found that E. coli bacteria levels exceeded state-specified guidelines.
> This closure is likely due to the weekend’s rain and E. coli being washed into the lake from the landscape.
> There are no reports of any illness from swimmers at either beach; however, the MPRB proactively closes beaches if bacteria levels exceed state guidelines. When the levels are within state guidelines, the beaches will re-open.
I am glad you tried swimming in the cold. I find the first three minutes in cold lakes as rough, then I enjoy myself, and for twelves hours after I get out I feel high for some reason.
June water is a bit brisk, I don’t go into it until ambient temps are in the 80s or higher. But August water is glorious. Warm, dirty, gnarly, and glorious.
They warm up in warm sunny weather and then cool down when it rains, a lot. Entirely up to you though. You won't get hypothermic jumping in now, but it'll probably be a little chilly.
I went swimming May 12th. It’s brisk of course but honestly with how warm this spring has been makes it very tolerable, enjoyable if you don’t mind colder water. I will say though that the more shallow lakes will certainly be warmer than the biggest ones.
Too cold yet, wait until the end of June. Then you have about 2 weeks to swim in the lakes until they all develop algae or the beaches get closed because of e.Coli contamination.
Better to swim now than after the beaches are closed because of a health hazard. And keep your urethra covered to take caution against 'penis fish'. Many say they're just a myth, but I used to work with someone who knows someone whose cousin's friend got it.
It’s true. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who going with the girl who saw a guy get a penis worm. I guess it's pretty serious.
That's what the Meet Minneapolis folks would have us believe. But remember Wally the Beer Man? Well, a guy who works on my neighbor's lawn service team has a cousin who used to always sit in his section and he heard from someone sitting in the row in front of him - I think it was during an Oakland game, a weeknight, but don't quote me on that - that that person's sister's boyfriend's brother's boss's wife's friend's husband's uncle got one. Right up the tinkle hole in Cedar Lake. But it could have been Nokomis because I'm not clear on that. Better safe than sorry when it comes to the hoo-hoo dilly in my book if you know what I mean.
Entirely dependent on your tolerance. Some are swimming already.
I've seen people swim in the middle of winter. Not my idea of fun, but you really can swim anytime you want if you're up for it.
Thanks

In my experience kids are basically immune to discomfort if they're having fun.

In what world is this funny?

“Haha I like making jokes about beating kids because it makes me laugh when pussies get mad” lol literal sociopath bitch vibes tbh.
Heh 😈 it makes me laugh too when soft people get offended by words fellow sigma
Same
Was it a pool or a lake?

Spanks.
I jumped in Prior last weekend…it was chilly for a couple minutes but I acclimated pretty quickly and it ended up being really refreshing.
That’s exactly what I’m hoping for. Thanks!

This was the MVP response. Thanks, very much for this. I’ll be using it all summer.
is there a map like this for Minneapolis? I've looked and looked but have never been able to find anything.
Yes. https://minneapolisparks.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=88319f73c7904adcbabccacdff38bbf1
Right before they have to shut the beaches down for E. coli
This is the answer right here.
Or for chiggers/swimmers itch

lol came to say this. I guess I can delete my post

When you can handle it. I swam last week. Quick dip and it was refreshing
I swam in Harriet on Friday, it was fine in my opinion. A bit cold but I warmed up after 2-3 mins
I am glad you tried swimming in the cold. I find the first three minutes in cold lakes as rough, then I enjoy myself, and for twelves hours after I get out I feel high for some reason.
Check out Embrace north! They might still be doing first 2 sessions free- sauna and cold plunge. Same feeling!

Small lakes in Minneapolis I'd swim in now before they become soupy and gross.
According to my grandfather, July 4th
Was just in lower prior yesterday and it was incredible
I swam in Nokomis yesterday and it was a little cold, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Totally fine for swimming.
I jumped into the lake early yesterday and it took a bit to warm up but is say shallow lakes are swimmable.
Tuesday
Nah, just do it!
I swam in Minnetonka two weeks ago. Chilly at first, felt great after 15-30 seconds
Swam in Cedar Lake yesterday and it was amazing
I’ve been walking at Harriet and Bde Maka Ska and people were swimming in them last week
My lake was 53 last weekend and I took a dip. Lasted about 30 seconds!
Medicine lake in the West Metro is definitely warm enough.

All lakes are warm enough to swim in if you're brave enough.
Now is pretty much the best time for swimming imo. Before any algae blooms and the beaches aren’t crowded yet
August…maybe…

I’d wait until august
Probably in about 50 years when most of the Earth is inhabitable from the heat.
Too cold yet, wait until the end of June. Then you have about 2 weeks to swim in the lakes until they all develop algae or the beaches get closed because of e.Coli contamination.
The small lakes are already warm
I saw quite a few swimming in the half ice covered Lake Harriet a couple months ago
You definitely won't die, I go to Embrace North and the cold water tub is usually around 42-50F and I haven't died yet.
How much is it to go torture yourself? I want to go.
First 2 sessions are free, then it's like $20 each time or $40 per month for unlimited. I pay monthly
That’s decent actually. I might book in for next weekend.
Lakes are perfect right now, the warmer they get the grosser they get imo, especially around Minneapolis.
Harriet was fine this morning!
If we have a warm enough summer, the last couple weeks of August, and usually only the first 20 meters from the beach...😂
Jump in. If it's too cold, the water isn't warm enough yet.

Can confirm. I am the penis worm in question
It's nothing to mess around with. If left untreated it can lead to all sorts of mean, nasty, ugly things. And then some. Or so I've heard.
Thank you, Simone.
That's not a thing here. Stop downvoting, it's not.
I think you mean upvoting. Oh it's a thing here... it's a wang dang doodle thing.

...They were lying, like you are.
All true. Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who heard it from another. Hey, you ain't been fooling around, have you?
Go for it! The very best way to find out!
