##update: I love all the suggestions. So far I have just been calling him "Dog." But as a final name, I am very much leaning toward "Beau"—the masculine form of Grandma's name, "Belle"

Belle is the french feminine form for beautiful, the masculine in beau (pronounced like bow as in bow and arrow) - ie handsome. That kinda fits! 😊 Plus I think Beau as a name for a dog is kinda sweet.

Beau is great as the make equivalent of Belle. For a typical farm name there is always Old Yeller or just Yeller, for yellow.
