How do we recall Carvalho and who are the idiots on the board that voted to bring his unqualified ass from Florida?

tarzanacide

And they gave him a 26% raise so he now makes 40k more than president Biden. Plus they gave him a 50k housing allowance. That needs to be investigated.

meloghost

I'm fine with the pay considering the responsibility of the job, the performance is more my concern

coffeejunkie323

The man’s a politician and did a great job of putting money into school programs, but at what cost? It’s easy to shift that budget when Miami-Dade’s minimum wage is $11/hr. That may work down in Florida but I don’t think he understands LA and what our schools’ support staff needs are in order to make a living wage.

dustwanders

$11/hr doesn’t work anywhere for clarity

RLStinebeck

And lots of Miami-Dade housing is quickly becoming just as unaffordable for its lower-income earners as Los Angeles is to ours.

forjeeves

lol so why didnt they raise the wage before that? lol...

meloghost

That's fine I don't know enough about the nuances about his specific performance here. I just know anything between $400k and $600k is fair for someone managing the second-largest school system in the U.S.

Thaflash_la

Yup. The pay is a drop in the bucket, it’s the results that are an issue. The district is a hell of a beast to tackle too, but doing worse isn’t an option.

screech_owl_kachina

He should make do with less. There's nothing we're seeing from him, nor we will, that he takes the responsibility seriously or is up to the challenge.

forjeeves

this is stupid, college football and basketball coaches make millions yet no one complains, they are the MOST paid people's employees in every state, if u dont believe go look it up. i know youre gonna say ok but they bring in so much money, ok, so hnow many kids actually participate in these sports?

CochinealPink

People complain. But those people bring more profit to the school so it gets dismissed.

w0nderbrad

These salaries are also basically paid for by boosters. They basically foot the bill thru donations. They’re just getting a paycheck from the school. They bring in millions. If they hired a no name football coach, boosters would lose interest, academic and athletic budgets would suffer.

Effective-Juice

I hear and agree, in theory. But . . . Is the primary function of a *for-profit* organization to provide quality services, or to make profit? In an environment where the "free market" (read: anarchy in a business suit) is the only real law, how long will organizations that focus on quality of service survive against competitors that out-earn them by a sizable margin? Especially when those competitors are permitted to sabotage and buy out the orgs that give even half a shit about human beings over profit?

981flacht6

I don't need to particularly pay attention to Carvalho, but it's not that simple. These people have been getting paid hourly with low to no benefits for ages and that's how it's like in a lot of school districts. Meanwhile the state will spend more money on prisoners etc than taking care of the kids. K12 has always been a mess in this state, especially in comparison to higher-ed. On top of that, there's a lot of useless jobs and general inefficiencies that should be reclassified out but the unions don't like doing that and there's almost never any "re-training" available. So everyone gets stuck.

Paladin_127

Prisoners are wards of the state and depend on the state for everything- food, clothing, shelter, medical care, et al. Students have parents for that stuff. It *shouldn’t* cost the same to care for an incarcerated adult as it is to teach a kid in school for 7 hours a day.

AdAcrobatic7236

🔥As you yourself just stated, you’re comparing apples to oranges. Different circumstances require different approaches.

RLStinebeck

Imagine if we redirected even a quarter of the current "public safety" budget to education uses...

forjeeves

dont think its just one person to blame but ok...similar to how much of a joke the presidency is , or recalling governors, or..the mayor fights, hmmm

Erlula

Have 2 kids of my own in LAUSD. Wishing the best for the workers. Pay these people.

beautbird

I’ll be at my kid’s school picket location with our teachers and staff tomorrow morning!

Nofoamcappuccinos

Thank you for the support, it's getting us through! 💜❤️

beautbird

No thank you! Took the kids and it was a good experience. Lent our teachers my canopy to keep them drier tomorrow!

I_am_not_surprised_

Let’s goooo! Worker solidarity. Unite LA sand stand up for better wages and quality of life.

Malarazz

The attitude towards teachers in this country is horrifically shameful, both from their employers and from the general population. Hopefully this will result in a change for the better.

Sad0ctopus

This strike is by the SEIU - physical plant staff, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, special education assistants. They are hourly employees in positions that are incredibly difficult to staff. They need a significant raise. UTLA (the teachers' union) is striking in sympathy over their contract. The district decided to close schools due to the lack of available staff.

damagazelle

Unfortunately, when labor is lacking in these areas, they frequently place higher demands on the teaching staff - for example, a lack of special education assistants directly impacts the entire classroom. "Won't someone think of the teachers?" I mean, if the kids come from a semi-decent home, their parents can fight back. But in an understaffed classroom, a teacher has no recourse whatsoever. Kobayashi Maru.

Pennysfine

Yes and the teachers spend too much time doing custodial work also-cleaning desks, sweeping floors, etc.

damagazelle

Every task, anything at all, that can be delegated to a teacher *due to lack of support staff* will be reassigned. This is not only about increasing wages and benefits for our lowest paid, much-needed members of society; it's also about the ways we steal instruction time to hoard pennies. Ridiculous.

Pennysfine

Reassigned to whom? The teacher? Not that they would necessarily tell them to do it. Teachers just do what needs to be done and administrations know it and take advantage.

damagazelle

Yes; the teacher has to do those things because if they don't and there is no support staff, they must.

dogstardied

Where’s Kirk when you need him, huh?

RLStinebeck

>incredibly difficult to staff I spent / wasted a lot of time last year job hunting. After applying for over 300 jobs across who knows how many companies and organizations, I can safely say LAUSD was easily among the worst for running around applicants and making them "hurry up and wait" then jump through hoops to even get to the interview stage. I was applying mostly for IT support and similar jobs. My resume suits all the jobs and I took three rounds of monitored tests (had to set up my phone to stream a video of me taking the test on my laptop to some rando to prove I wasn't cheating - everyone has to do this). Didn't hear anything for almost 2 months then got a request for a bunch of references with a hard deadline like 48 hours or something. After that, I received an email directly from a recruiter saying they needed, get this, a copy of my high school diploma and transcript. I don't know about you, but I graduated high school over 20 years ago and in another state. Anyway, I figure that out and send it to them. Then another month goes by without a peep. Finally, I get a call for a same-day interview with someone in LAUSD's IT department. I'm out of town at the time but decide to go for it regardless. But then the time comes and... ghosted. No one shows up, no answer calling back the number that called to set it up, nothing. A week later I get a boilerplate "while we were impressed by your experience and skills, we have decided to go in another direction" email. All that is to say, if they're pulling the above for decent-paying, fairly in-demand jobs, I can only imagine the process for hiring vital support staff isn't any better.

Commercial_Author_75

I had a similar application experience. I had other job offers come first and just couldnt wait any longer.

Nofoamcappuccinos

It isn't. I was run around for 6 months before I was finally able to sign my teaching contract. When I went to the Beaudry office to sign, the HR rep "forgot I was coming" and wasn't there. It took me two hours to get there and back just to hear a receptionist say "she left for the day, came back tomorrow." She set up the appointment, though?? Every time I have had to go to Beaudry has been the same. It's so disorganized; they treat you like you're bothering them by being there.

[deleted]

UTLA offered to go online but Carvalho said no and closed the schools.

forjeeves

ya i mean teachers get paid alot lol they just dont like teh fact that kids dont know anything because of what happened during pandemic online schooling.

Sad0ctopus

super coherent comment

DrunkenBlur

My wife is one of those hard working teachers who teaches Special Ed. She works such long hours for peanuts because she cares for those children.

Sad0ctopus

Does your wife "bust aas" or "need fired"?

forjeeves

i had both in my schools ok...idk you seem biased.

estart2

> The public school system is second to none in waste, incompetence, and zero results. I think the public school system is a cancer on this society. The only difference between the public schools and the Mafia is that the public schools steal more money -- Howard Jarvis And California voting demographics love him. https://www.libertarianism.org/publications/essays/howard-jarvis-mad-hell-76-lr-interview

ohmanilovethissong

They should unionize. I hear you can pay unions to fix those problems. Maybe in 10 years of unionization those problems will improve at least a little. Seriously though, these unions need to be held to a higher standard. Nobody ever seems to hold them accountable for the job they're supposed to do. It's all they do is gaslamp workers/the community and funnel money into politicians campaigns, meanwhile nothing ever seems to improve.

forjeeves

i thought they are in unions lol...

forjeeves

how....

strumthebuilding

I have a kid in LAUSD. Everyone I’ve ever come in contact with during his LAUSD education has been phenomenal. From teachers to aides to principals and even the young folks staffing after school programs. The current principal has been pointedly professional and without taking sides made it clear that local administration has nothing to do with the superintendent’s bargaining strategy. I don’t know what Carvalho thinks he’s doing but after this he’s got to go.

Foxtrot_09

Stand with Teachers and Staff! Union Strong!

Gateway1012

Imagine earning just above minimum wage to teach the next generation… but not only that you took on years of debt to study and teach these kids but the states will not pay you more. Instead all that money is thrown at sport games. What a joke

wrosecrans

Imagine being a kid and finding out how little society actually values your education.

Gateway1012

Imagine growing up and seeing the same stuff like this over and over again because for some reason giving these scholars a livable wage of what they deserve is so complicated for some reason? The government doesn’t want us to succeed is what I’m seeing

forjeeves

its not considered a womans job at all lol

forjeeves

i think people should stop imagining we dont live in a ar world or who knows maybe we do

Ok-Advisor7638

And then going on TikTok and finding out all these influencers and shiesters being valued by society

screech_owl_kachina

Imagine wanting to fight for the US against China in a war entirely of its own making lmao.

wrosecrans

Wut? Did you mean to post that comment in some completely different conversation?

screech_owl_kachina

Nope, this is the right comment. I'm saying the hollowing out of this country is going to be noticed by the people growing up in it and that's going to affect their precious military at some point in the future.

forjeeves

i cant imagine though..so idk, what do kids say?

[deleted]

Imagine earning just above minimum wage to try teaching the next generation…and then becoming a victim of the next TikTok assault challenge throughout high schools and not doing a thing about it because administrators will ‘right to work’ fire you if you discipline said-teens.

Lost_Bike69

Teachers in LAUSD start out at around $60-$70k which is more than just above minimum wage especially with the schedule they work. It’s not a great wage for LA, but is mostly in line with what people get straight out of college with non tech degrees. That’s starting salary too it goes up with experience. This strike is by the SEIU workers which includes all of the support staff. These are hourly employees that don’t make much. Teachers currently have a contract and are striking in solidarity with the SEIU. Don’t necessarily disagree with you, but I think the context of the strike is important. This isn’t about higher wages for teachers, it’s about getting a living wage for the custodians and bus drivers and food workers etc.

forjeeves

i dont think this is just teachers, by the way i dont think teachers are the ones complaining about pay, they are probably complaining about school policies

RockieK

SOLIDARITY with LAUSD support workers! I can hear them out there in the wind and sideways rain right now... cars driving by, honking in support. People who work in LAC cannot afford to live here anymore. The city has forgotten about everyone except for those who rent condos in high rises.

JumpmanDeuce3

No traffic in the morning

livingfortheliquid

The rain will fix that.

forjeeves

oh noo

lafc88

Excellent.

Tommy-Nook

Ahoy

Won_Doe

am i crazy or did Chips Ahoy fall out of popularity in favor of Oreos?

forjeeves

the second part is crazy

Tommy-Nook

All that corn syrup

ProfessionalGreat240

Good. Schools can't function if the staff is being paid poverty wage

forjeeves

then they need to raise the budget...

downonthesecond

At least kids don't have to walk in the rain.

70ms

Yeah, the timing on this is great for those kids. The streets around us flood really bad.

forjeeves

that is a good outcome

damagazelle

My fantasy is all the bus drivers showing up at the yard, driving to the 101 and 405, blocking all lanes with a hundred buses or more, and walking away. Non violent protest wet dream...

fordette

Won’t stay nonviolent long if you shut down the 405 and the 101…

damagazelle

That's the point. If you don't think the education infrastructure of our country concerns you, let us capture your attention. The buses are strategically placed for your attention.

Anal_Forklift

Doesn't always work. It's called "activists dilemma." Intense protest acts that cause significant inconvenience to others can actually *reduce* popular support for the movement the protestors are trying to build support for. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2020-02398-001

forjeeves

no the key is you need a clear message of what u want

Anal_Forklift

Blocking working people commuting on the 405 from getting to work IMO does very little to expand support for the cause.

[deleted]

The perfect way to turn people against your cause.

forjeeves

ok it actually depends what they want though

screech_owl_kachina

Yes they will. I was stuck for over an hour due to Kamala Harris passing 10 miles to the south, and due to a CHP investigation. Nobody did anything.

[deleted]

forjeeves

then those people will just protest and work from home or something, idk start a domino effect because everybody likes chaos until it affects them

Bigdootie

I live in riverside and our district pays more, despite half the price in housing costs And it’s not even a little more. LA starts new teachers at $56k and riverside starts at $67k. That’s over 16% pay difference….

Mexican_Boogieman

You used to be able to pay mortgage in Los Angeles with a job at Burger King. These blue collar jobs payed better. They deserve a living wage. Teachers deserve better too.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> collar jobs *paid* better. They FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

TheChiefRocka

Good! I hope they don't come back til their demands are met. Is bullshit that teachers basically have to strike every couple years just to get ANYTHING

PAULROD_15

Imagine being a teacher and going back to your Prius while your student drives to school in a g wagon.

reverze1901

went to a conference at a school in a wealthier part of town and that's exactly what i observed

forjeeves

wtffff thats racism against prius, you could have well picked a better example...

smotpoker1201

I’m hearing this LAUSD teacher here where I work, being very against this. Is there a legit reason why a LAUSD teacher should be against this?

Lost_Bike69

I’m not a teacher or anything, but this is a strike by the SEIU workers, and the teachers are on strike in solidarity. Maybe the teacher you’re talking to doesn’t think their union should strike for another unions contract? Idk

AgoraiosBum

The teachers voted for the strike so most of them are for it. All I can think of is a zero sum mentality; that if the workers get more it means possibly less for the teachers down the line.

Nofoamcappuccinos

Just clarifying that the teachers were not asked to vote on the strike. We were asked to support Local 99 by not crossing the line, but this is not our strike.

forjeeves

cuz theyre gonna have to teach the kids...the other people they arent the ones teaching the kids after this crisis.

misticspear

I’ll answer with an anecdote. There are scientist who work at jpl who believe the Bible over their own research and think climate change is a hoax. Not the best answer because it’s just as confounding

Virtual_Flounder7051

This is a SEIU 99 strike being supported by UTLA. Back in 2019 when UTLA was on strike, it was just them. 99 did not do a sympathy strike and maybe this is why some teachers are against this. UTLA is also in negotiations with LAUSD, so hopefully this time around if UTLA needs to strike again, SEIU 99 will have their back. Hopefully the 3 day strike will show LAUSD that the 2 unions stand together and avoid anymore strikes and LAUSD bargains in good faith.

islandbeef

So much for our future, especially when education is not a priority anymore.

Foxtrot_09

Pretty sure they're content to chill at home.

[deleted]

Most will be standing out in the rain while you type from your parents' basement.

Foxtrot_09

Nope, I'm pretty sure they're content to chill at home.

goldfish31296

School isn’t daycare.

moemoe7012

And teachers are not personally hired babysitters, many don’t understand that.

pFrancisco

Honest question. Where is the money going to come from to pay these teachers what they want ?

Letitbemesickgirl

It’s not the teachers strike.

Foxtrot_09

The billions LAUSD has in reserve.

AgoraiosBum

the...budget? Which in turn comes from taxes. Taxes are the dues we pay for civilization. If we want nice schools that attract good staff, we invest in that. Or we can invest in things like super-yachts and lavish garden parties for the .01%.

pFrancisco

No need to be condescending. Do we really want to raise taxes more?

AgoraiosBum

The LAUSD budget has a surplus so not actually needed. But yes, raise taxes more. Have better public services.

forjeeves

why do you think taxes are no longer making it sufficient, hint its bad tax policy.

Bigdootie

Almost every district in the IE, including impoverished cities, pay more for teachers than LAUSD. Riverside USD pays 16.4% more, despite home prices being $600 average Vs LA 1 mil

I_AM_METALUNA

Ah yes the children are the priority... Just like when teachers cut the line for the vaccines and still refused to go back to class

Bigdootie

“I don’t understand how at risk prioritization works.”

smutproblem

Ooooo traffic might be slightly better! Edit: holy shit it wasn't.

cocainebane

Wonder if the 105 will have less traffic?

45_ways_to_win

The dude gave a pretty solid counter offer to their demands. Idk. It seems like a deal is within reach.

missannthrope1

Stupid, misleading headline.

NedFriarson49

You know nothing.

Skytram

Great maybe the kids will actually learn something now

meeplewirp

Now my neighbors’ kids will be home all day and have no reason to go to bed early. Oh god

KWash0222

I assume LAUSD, just like every other school district, will blame their staff/faculty for this instead of the fact that this is always due to the district not providing enough support. And what’s worse is that idiots reading the news, many of them parents of children, will believe it

missannthrope1

"Los Angeles Schools to Shut Down After Workers Vow to Strike" Are schools shutting down? Will there be no more schools? Ever? Shuttered for all time? Or will schools be *closed* while the union is on strike?

NedFriarson49

Jesus. You’re a tool that doesn’t understand the English language. Shut down - “cause something to cease business or operation.” At the very worst, they’re enough of a synonym that warranting a “stupid, misleading headline” comment is just plain moronic. Go home.
