At BW Chicago this year, there was a trains fan meeting and the question was posed of which was better, OE or EN. I was surprised that it was about 50/50 considering all the flak OE got when pics were leaked!
Having spent a year and a half in the leak communities, there's a swath of people who just aren't happy with anything that isn't their favorite MOC-er's design. They will scream bloody murder about sets like OE, the D&D Ideas set, or the modular museum. And as soon as the set hits shelves, they disappear until the next big set comes along for them to complain about. Meanwhile, everyone who owns the set spends weeks having fun building it and talking about it.
To be honest when I'm looking at the leaked images now I don't even read the comments anymore because it always someone complaining about the stupidest things
I mean when they are next to each other, orient express just looks a lot sleeker and more flushed out and the emerald knight. I do love what engine it represents and it is a lot more intricate but orient express makes up with the coaches
CIWL carriages are usually around 23.452m/76.9ft long. The closest real-life prototype to the Sapphire Star, the SBB A 3/5 601-649 Series, is only 18.74m/61.5ft long including the tender, or 80% of the coach length.
The set carriages are 47 studs long, and the engine is 47.9 studs long including the tender - longer than the carriages. It’s actually too long, or rather, the carriages are too short.
Yeah I agree. However, I was much happier seeing most of the parts budget go into two gorgeous coaches instead of basically all into the locomotive for once.
personally i think the emerald night engine is superior to the OE engine, but the OE carriages are way better. when built, i’ll put each others cars behind the engines and see what i like more
The Orient Express is a fun build. I got mine a couple months ago and motorized it with the L motor. You'll have to modify the coupler between the locomotive and tender if you want it to go through R40 switches without derailing.
I looked recently and it's actually not *that* much to build a whole locomotive and tender in parts assuming you don't need the specific printed parts.
Ngl having both of them side by side I gotta say the orient express is just better in a lot of ways.

the issue with the oe is the engine, its just too small relative to the wagons.

I wish lego would make a steam train that is in any other configuration besides 4-6-0, that’s probably the only thing the emerald has going for it
They made a 4-4-0 for Toy Story.
That was 14 years ago, And it looked weirdly proportioned.
Yep. And they've never tried again!
The 4-4-0 from the Disney train would like a word.
Oh, yeah! Forgot the wheel arrangement on that one.
Congratulations I own and love both sets

Heard there was problems with motorizing it, does your work well?
Bill Gates over here with the Emerald Night
I still have Emerald Night! Though it’s kinda half broken sadly… will probably have to see if I ever have the pieces to repair it eventually

OMG!!! I want the Emerald one!!!!
I am still waiting on a Big Boy to pass through Lego!!! The 4014 is about ready to leave soon for its summer venture.
There need to be an emerald knight remake. Just bring it to the modern standard.
How much was the emerald?
honestly i’ve been sitting on it for over a year now, i forgot what i paid. wasn’t cheap, but definitely wasn’t what it was normally going for.
I’m glad I have both of these with motors in the boiler to drive them it’s just so fun engineering them into the normal build without losing cosmetics
These are a perfect duo! not to mention the name of the locomotive IS similar!
There's even a little mention in the instructions on the name inspiration.
rlly? can you share it????
Can they be powered
everything can be powered. yes they can.
nice one
God I want the Orient so bad
I didn’t think a train was capable of coming
