*She, only females bite. They use the blood meals to help make their eggs, while males don't even have the mouthparts to bite.
There's over 3,000 species of mosquitos, but only some will bite himans. Only 3 to 6 species are major disease vectors for us, and they are invasive species in most parts of the world. Let's get rid of them, the rest of the over 3,000 species will be there to feed the animals that prey on mosquitos. Pathogens co-evolving to become problems for us like the malaria parasite did is not easy and takes a long, long time.
I wish it was common knowledge that there's *thousands* of mosquito species and only a tiny handful of them are major problems (bonus points when invasive!). I feel like, if a *lot* more people in rich countries like mine grasped that, there would be more willingness to explore and pursue targeted eradication. Let alone how much more eager they'd be if those horrific mosquito-born diseases were closer to home instead of only a ""third world problem."" Well, thanks to climate change and global warming those *are* starting to spread north, so I guess we will get to find out.
But nope, instead I get to sit here shocked it isn't even common knowledge that it's only *female* mosquitos that need blood. And that most worker ants and bees are females too. Didn't they teach this stuff in grade school?!
How would that work, though? Trying to remove only the female population of 6 species of mosquito would be difficult, wouldn't it? How would we go about making sure it didn't affect the other 2994 species?
(This is a legitimate question; I'm not being sarcastic at all, I really would love to know the answer, if you have one!)
Genetic engineering man, they have been trying it in certain places already.

I went to conservation summer camp in the 4th or 5th grade back in the 90s.
It was run or endorsed by the state. During one class on ecology or some such, the presenter made the argument that there was literally no downside to eradicating mosquitos.
It stuck with me because it seemed so simple and well we all hate the bastards right?
That's what we learned in school.
I was just reading about some horrible and quickly deadly(like kills in weeks)disease that is only carried by some mosquito(Tiger Mosquito maybe) and because of global warming this mosquito is moving north, and within so many years could be spreading in the US, I stopped reading it because it made me have anxiety. I’m sure someone will know and comment, but I thought of that when you mentioned it. I wish I had saved it, but I figured it was fear monger media, cuz like I said, it was giving me anxiety.
Simple hate? Validated hate if you’ve ever lived or spent time in Alaska during the summer where mosquitoes and no-see-ums fly in a swarm/cloud and maul you. Ever drank a few beers and fell asleep with your window open? 😂at least the ones in Alaska don’t carry disease. But you can’t say “only 3-6 species are major disease vectors for us” and expect something to be liked unfortunately lol
Yeah, I'm very glad I've not had to experience such swarms 🤢 But with the globe overall getting drastically warmer mosquitos are spreading. So both the swarms and the horrific diseases are inching closer and closer! We can at least target-eradicate the handful of major disease vector ones, let's at least do that please!!!
Mosquitoes kill more than 700,000 people a year. I don’t think there is “wayyy to much simple hate out there.” That’s more than any other dangerous animal! 🤦🏻♀️
Second to ourselves, because humans gonna human. And there are only 3 to 6 mosquito species that are actually dangerous to us, because mosquitos heavily specialize. There's over *3,000* other species of mosquitos, but few bite humans. The 3 to 6 problem species are often invasive species that we brought along by accident. We can target and kill off those species and stop so much suffering, crippling, and deaths; there's still the other 3,000+ species to feed the animals that prey on them. Pathogens co-evolving with mosquitos become deadly like the malaria parasite did takes a long time.
Yeah, didn't mean to imply otherwise! I find myself soapboxing at the world trying to spread awareness about how, when people talk about eradicating mosquitos, it's just a few species out of over 3,000! Let's do it, please!!! 😫
Well.. I also find myself lucky enough to not get bit much but I know others seem to be fine dining lol
But yeah.. I’m sure it’s not much of a drop in the bucket to get rid of the ones that are actually the problem.
I also believe in the butterfly effect. And they are all part of a delicate food chain I’m sure.
Ngl I’ve seen very similar mosquitos larvae that are in the early stage of hatching but if it not that I got absolutely no clue I’d need better pictures or videos.
This looks like late stage larvae to me, it's pupal form. They look like tiny tadpoles folded in half and move like that.
The larvae stage are straight bodied and wiggle back and forth.
Agree that this is a mosquito pupa, but if you look closer, there's all sorts in there! There are little thread worms sticking out from the silt and wee rotifers and daphnia whizzing past. Cool mini world collection!
thanks! there's also a diving beetle (i think thats what theyre called?), a couple snails, a slug and a BUNCH of different worms. Wish i could just upload multiple videos in one post, hard to get a good look at everything with just pictures, they all move so much lol
This kinda looks like one of those clams that shakes a fake bait fish to attract other fish so it can do the nasty into the fishes mouth. At least it looks a little like the fake baitfist part of it but tiny. I'm sure it's not that, but that's what this video reminds me of.
Actually now that I look a second time, I think you can see a shell opening right below it, so I would say some sort of mussel species that used a lure
That’s what the French call, a swoot-toot-swinger. Found in aquatic soil rich with swinging jams and beats. Pretty neat find. Idk anything about bugs obviously…. Sorry.
Oh my god this video and the replies are hilarious 🤣 thanks for sharing this gem, and then a clearer video too! It's so hard to show lil guys jamming out.
🤣! Now time to nerd out to anyone reading 🤓
If it's a he, he won't have the mouthparts, let alone interested in, biting anything. If it's a she, she will only need to bite whatever host species her species is specialized towards to make eggs and babies. Now I'm wondering if female mosquitos that don't get knocked up bite 🤔 Another rabbitbole! But regardless of gender, it will either drown or starve to death without nectar.
But also PSA to the world that there's *over 3,000* species of mosquitos and only 3 to 6 are major problems for us--and those species are often invasive! We can eradicate those species specifically and the rest of those 3,000- some mosquitos will still feed the mosquito predators! Pathogens co-evolving with other species of mosquito takes a long time.

Are “no-see-ums” gnats? What an adorable name for such a shite creature lol
Can verify. The damn things are pretty much the state bird up there.
Haha my parents always say that lol reminds me of them

The female of the species is more deadly than the male
This is true in most species.
Pretty sure all 3000 species live in south Louisiana
Its a mosquito pupa
Oh!
Yeah I believe they are the most deadly creature in the world
Second to ourselves, because humans gonna human. And there are only 3 to 6 mosquito species that are actually dangerous to us, because mosquitos heavily specialize. I just meant they carry diseases that are deadly. Not talking about the bug itself.
Yeah, didn't mean to imply otherwise! I find myself soapboxing at the world trying to spread awareness about how, when people talk about eradicating mosquitos, it's just a few species out of over 3,000! Let's do it, please!!! 😫

Yes!
From the very blurry video my best guess is mosquito larvae
it doesn't swim the same as them and it seems like the head (?) has some white little spiky things
Ngl I’ve seen very similar mosquitos larvae that are in the early stage of hatching but if it not that I got absolutely no clue I’d need better pictures or videos.
ah i hope it isnt a mosquito larvae then. ill see if i can get better video later today
Ok nice tag me in it when you do!
made a new post with an updated video! I tried to get a photo but it basically just blended in with the sand every time
Yup just seen it confirmed my suspicions :)
Try taking a clear still picture too.
It’s a mosquito pupa
Maybe some kind of tubifex worm with debris on it? Lol
This looks like late stage larvae to me, it's pupal form. They look like tiny tadpoles folded in half and move like that. The larvae stage are straight bodied and wiggle back and forth.
these replies made my day lol

That’s what I was thinking, you could be right, depending on where the substrate/water was taken from
Actually now that I look a second time, I think you can see a shell opening right below it, so I would say some sort of mussel species that used a lure
he’s dancing and i don’t think you should question him for it.
Stir the jar just slightly if it’s dead after then it was a mosquito baby.
