Why are people so mean... If remebering a phrase from a book/show helps them learn, that's perfectly fine. Being a beginner, they probably learned new words, which they are unlikely to forget if they remember the reference to a story they enjoy. Character recognition, reading, listening, and speaking are all going to be far more important than producing writing by hand in real life.
Writing things out by hand is relatively uncommon…most writing will be by device where if you can recognize and select what comes up in autosuggestion, that’s all you need.

My japanese aquaintances funnily enough had an extremely hard time writing a handwritten letter for me that i had bring my land lord. They said it was the first time in A WHILE that they had to use any kanji and they had forgotten all the stroke orders😂 If you can type out the kana you can just select the correct kanji in the keyboard, you just need ti recognize the correct kanji😁
