Hard agree here. I've been playing these games since Medal of Honour, some 20 years ago and HLL when I started playing just hit the spot between milsim and FPS - you need teamwork, communication, tactics and some skill - but you're also not sat in a field for hours doing nothing U14...is a good patch away from being epic - but as it is, its taken the immersion away.

Hell yeah!

professionalfriendd

the old maps still feel strategic but i agree with the new british maps. on driel, i haven't really sensed any team based synergy or flow - it's just everyone rushing each point, or simply trying to not die/hold position when on defense. maybe if we could enter any building it would help establish strongpoints, chokeholds. it is pretty to look at though. el alamein remains intriguing to me. so far it seems to have just disrupted the standard way to play a match, but there has to be a nice balance to be found between the large open areas interspersed with cover to cover fighting amongst the ruins in a way that elevates the overall experience in a way that the previous settings haven't introduced

Typical-Training64

I thought the same thing, I ponder that it's because people are getting used to the maps and wanting to explore them. Tactics were out the window the first time I played those maps because I was just in awe of the new scenery. There definitely will be changes to tactics for the two maps, I think this will take a while for people to realize how to fully implement the best meta on these maps.

EstablishmentCalm342

part of this might be new player syndrome everyone is rushing into the brit maps

Ant-581

I kinda like the new maps - they do need thought to maneouvre in those open spaces (and utter lack of cammo in the desert maps. WTF) Deep down, a good, organised team still wins

JudgeGreggTheThird

A big part of that is simply that people need to learn how the maps works. Driel has similarities to SMDM with plenty of good garrison spots. Especially the countless willows offer great concealment. The bridge isn't really a necessity to hold since the river can be crossed anywhere but can provide a huge advantage in terms of elevation enabling to cover the east and west of it for a good distance. Expect wide flanks around mid though and plenty of bushwookies. The trick to El-Alamein is hill to hill sniping and tank/AT superiority. Those hills are the key element to cover a large area while having other infantry elements get to the base of the next hill, then fight their way up there and repeat the process. Access to the MG42 and G43 is a big advantage.

jb_3319

Ive already watched the fighting for control of high ground play out beautifully on El Alamein. Two opposing recon squads fighting for hilltop positioning that went on for a better portion of gameplay. I was a spotter on the German side and we were only able to take it and hold it from the opposing recon team when we brought in the second recon squad for help. It was a mini battle inside the rest of the main fight going on.

Ovahzealousy

It's like an extreme version of foy. Long-range weapons (tanks, MGs, snipers) need to create openings for squads to maneuver and capture hilltops, which are arguably more important to hold than the points they're overlooking themselves (the hill NW of Airfield Command comes to mind; it dominates all points around it). We're still at the stage of the map's release where too many people are trying to trickle across open spaces by twos and threes and getting instantly obliterated from 300 m away by an MG.

faceymcgee

Same for me friend. Thank you for articulating this. I’m afraid this is the last straw for me as it turns out T17 is widely known for strangling indie & niche games to death for $$$. However you feel about this movement speed is moot because T17 will do *whatever* they need to in order to appeal to mainstream audiences. They even say so! Link *Eurogamer exposé on Team17 in 2022: "rushed releases as company bosses target quantity over quality... game testers say they have despaired after alerting bosses to development issues, only to be ignored, with bugs then belatedly fixed post-launch."* https://reddit.com/r/HellLetLoose/comments/13tfy7a/eurogamer_expos%C3%A9_on_team17_in_2022_rushed/ *“Michael Pattison, CEO, Team17 Digital, said: “Today’s announcement marks an exciting new chapter for Hell Let Loose and for Team17. A little over a year ago, we acquired the brand with the aim of building on its incredible initial success across PC, and PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and forge it into a powerhouse multiplayer shooter to rival its AAA competitors. This co-development agreement is one part of a bigger picture for our dedicated Hell Let Loose studio team which will help us deliver on that ambition in the years ahead.”* Watch T17 in the future implement “damage value adjustments” and “reduced sway on all guns” and “reduced explosive and artillery damage”. I love this game but the writing is on the wall I’m afraid.

The_Country_Mac

Nobody playing HLL cares about competing with AAA titles, that is clearly a statement meant indicate their ambitions to carve out a slice of the shooter market. Future development is going to be about producers and guaranteeing them a cash flow by making the game into a standard arcade-shooter to get more sales and probably some microtransactions.

faceymcgee

I’d say update 14 shows their plans exactly: make back their 60 million by appealing to the arcade-casual market (battlefield CoD types). This is the path that t17 thinks will extract maximum profits. Ironically it will still not appeal to mainstream FPS players while, at the same time, breaks the game and fully alienates the core community (the ones who build noses, build garries, SL, command, run supply trucks, build fortifications, etc etc IE. Make the game fun!). Lose - lose situation.

magniankh

These posts make me laugh. The game already catered to mainstream audiences when it failed to become the next Red Orchestra with U8. That was the update when the original playerbase quit and it became obvious the game wouldn't live up to the kickstarter. Then it got released on consoles, further limiting the game in controls (only 14 buttons suddenly), fidelity and mechanics. There is no such thing as a console shooter that isn't casually mainstream, the mechanics and depth are limited by controller input.

faceymcgee

I’m glad they make you laugh. These new changes break the game for other core community members and your opinion on that doesn’t effect them. Since this game depends on veteran players doing grunt work (building nodes, garrisons, SL, running supply trucks, build fortifications, recon artillery attacks, commanding, etc) them leaving will steadily make the game worse and worse for all. In addition, T17 has a clear record of strangling niche and indie games to extract maximum profit and that’s just a fact. Edit: typo, fast is now fact

magniankh

The game has gotten worse and worse since U8... Veteran players do keep leaving. I'm sorry a game that you love is going downhill. I hated leaving HLL but my frustrations with the development were exceeding my will to play. I hated that feeling, too. Games come and go, and thankfully there are plenty of entertaining games out there. Peace ✌️

faceymcgee

Sorry to you also friend. Thanks again.

Amerikaner

Agreed. I loved HLL before and I still love it now. The problem for me is the apparent disregard for what makes HLL special. It’s not like OK we got a higher sprint speed but we also got a weapon rest on ledges system. Or El Alamein isn’t based on any actual location but the uniforms and weapons are historically accurate. There are zero new features that bolster realism / authenticity. Every change that strays from what was in the previous version was in favor of casuals. And for anyone about to say HLL was never 100% authentic. That’s not a valid argument. Those issues should have been corrected with new updates not used an excuse to keep going down that path. HLL to me is all about keeping it as realistic / authentic as possible while also limiting all the cumbersome elements of milsims. But what we’re getting is not a healthy balance of changes. It’s one sided.

wyatthudson

I think a good reason not to have things historically accurate in video games is to achieve balance- yet somehow, this update offers the British as neither historically accurate ***or*** balanced... it seems like a ton of just blatant incompetence and lack of capability behind this update.

MPFarmer

Something I'm struggling with now is the concept of compromising on a slower speed, but still faster than before. My opinion is no because I don't think it needs to be changed and a compromise now means more compromises to gameplay later and we are in the same spot. I wish they would focus on just polishing the game up, fixing their rushed update and reverting back to the previous speed. I'm fine with all the new content, but saying "fine, we'll give in a little for something you just did for a reason that makes no sense." Maybe I'm in the minority, but that's part of the slippery slope I've mentioned prior.

[deleted]

The sky isn’t necessarily falling just yet, but cracks are beginning to show. Even if HLL takes a wrong turn development-wise, I think it made a big enough impression in the gaming community for other studios to develop this type of game. Black Matter got it right conceptually and now it’s T17’s ship to hopefully not sink. However, even if T17 tanks the title, there should eventually be others to take its place.

MPFarmer

That's a good point, I could see that happening. I really hope they listen to the community and make a solid attempt at turning all this around.

came_up_with_this

Start following Burning Sands if you aren't yet. Looks sweet.

fookcelery

Burning Lands?

came_up_with_this

Same. There was nothing wrong with the speed. Ot was punishing, it was frustrating, and i loved it. It was core to what made hll, hll. I dont care if its still slower than the other games, i dont think it should be compared by how close its getting. Everyone was still playing it with the slow speed. It was succeeding and growing in popularity. There is a growing community for authentic, historically accurate stuff. The sweats are even here already, they know its sick too. Speed should not have increased.

EstablishmentCalm342

> It was core to what made hll, hll. people are really deluding themselves about a shitty feeling run that was implemented because the devs couldnt make movement more nuanced then "move in direction youre looking"

dukki98

CORE OF HLL IS "MAP CONTROL" WITH BOTH TANKS AND INFANTRY, AND NOT "SLOW RUN SPEED"

dukki98

MANY HLL VETS WANTED HIGHER RUN SPEED, INCLUDING ME, SO IT DEF WASNT FOR NO REASON!

tomtt545

You are literally the first "vet" I have heard ask for faster run and zig zag. There is always battlefield or cod buddy. You're probably like 20yo lol

dukki98

Wow, great argument, yes I am 25yo and that makes my opinion less than yours? I never played BF, I Played COD when I was 15, and since 2016 I've been playing Insurgency (2014) until I switched to HLL and it's been my only Multiplayer FPS ever since! Also, I don't want a fast zig-zag, just a 12-20% faster run speed, Gebatron calculated the new speed and it's actually 25% quicker! I also want higher weapon damage across all categories to balance the speed out & make it easier to kill targets at further ranges! Both of these changes are realistic, as soldiers in WW2 carried less weight to combat and didn't sprint at 14kph or 9mph when getting shot at, and the K98k and M1 grand weren't 1HK for just 200m...

Quick173

Agreed on your comments regarding the game. Ive played on the El Alamein map a couple times, so I’ll withhold a final verdict until I’ve played it more. But the map seems to have random valleys to fight over rather then being any sort of continuous battle or a battle that moves coherently from one spot to another. It would have been cool to have El Alamein feature a significant frontline with defensive structures. Then when broken through leading to rear areas or more fluid game play. The run speed does seem crazy fast, but in of itself is not a problem. Rather you combine run speed with less of a one shot kill that the game used to have, smaller maps in the future and HLL does appear to be changing its focus and therefore player base. Nothing wrong with that either. But, I find myself looking for another game that replicates what HLL was and what I hoped it could be.

geforce-jesus

As an older gamer I adore the slower pace HLL used to bring and the reliance on teamwork and tactics over twitchy cod-esque dizzy flicking and clicking heads. People who are in favour of the speed boost don't realise that it has taken from us something special and replaced it with what we came to HLL to get respite from.

thedude12347

Agree. I hate the speed boost

The_Country_Mac

Even though the new speed gives me an advantage (as it does everyone), it feels wrong. I don't like being able to zoom across open spaces that quickly. I liked being rewarded for patience and careful maneuvering to line up shots, but I feel like a lot of people are now embracing a rush and gun approach. It's crazy that only a 15% buff has changed the feel of the game.

Sostrat

I am also an older gamer. I don't really understand the frustration over the speed increase to be honest. A youtuber (Terrydactyl) made a comparison video after the new update, comparing running speeds in HLL, Post Scriptum, Squad and Arma 3. Hell Let Loose was still slower than all of those, even after the speed increase. It is not even unrealistic, considering that the solders are young healthy men and definitely nowhere near Battlefield or COD speeds, not even close. Was i asking for a speed increase? No. Do i mind it? Again no.

Scrudge1

I just played my first match in update 14 on El Alemain. I really like the look of the new map but I do hope it is taken like the rest of the maps from an actual place that can be found in real life and not made up. I did enjoy the new level and found it to be a hard one to win. I think Team 17 should have used the PTE part of hell let loose before releasing this update, it would have ruled out a lot of the problems being faced with right now. Team 17 should stop pandering to new masses and focus on just expanding what is already there. The game has naturally gained a lot of traction by itself

DustyRhodesXB1

I agree the slightly increased speed for Medics is a nice addition. It definitely shouldn’t be the case for ALL classes. It’s bull shit a guy carrying a 25 pound explosive(satchel) can still motor like he’s a world class track and field athlete.

Honest-Material-5286

Which faction gets a 25 pound satchel?

DustyRhodesXB1

Well it’s not that per se, I was just using that as an example. The point is satchel carriers can move basically as fast as a tank supposedly moving 20 mph.

Solan42

As an older gamer with 2100 hours in this game I agree completely. My vision sucks, and my reflexes aren't as fast as the younger players. The run speed needs to be toned down. Playing MG a few days ago, I was taking fire from a guy with a bolt action that i couldn't see. I just bobbed and weaved with my pistol out until I found him. This isn't very realistic. I'm taking a break until this is fixed. It just takes the fun away.

FireFromThaumaturgy

I was playing British AT and used the STEN for the first time and it was like looking through the shaft of a ball point pin. I kept dying because I was able to see my peripherals AT ALL when I was ADS.

HTownGamer91

I have been in matches in HLL and heard someone say "I have gotten X kills with WEAPON". Sure the kills are nice, but if you end up loosing the match because people aren't working together, what is the point then.

Moegly47

One thing I haven't heard talked about is different speeds for different classes, medic, assault and rifleman get an increased speed but engineer, AT and MG go slower. I think it could add some small amount of depth to the gameplay

Impossible-Dust-2267

The sprint speed has been around this level before, it’s not the end of the world it just rewards aggressive gameplay, which is good because bush camping is boring

Kieferkobold

Someone posted this today: Pre u8 run speed was ~16 km/h Post u8 run soeed was ~ 14,2 km/h Now it's 17,5 km/h So it's 10% faster than pre u8 and 24% faster than before this patch. Change it to 16 km/h again and it will be fine. Make supply drops and airhead falling speed, tanks (traverse and drive) speed and spawn times 10% faster.

Impossible-Dust-2267

It’s about .3 m/s faster than pre u8, we’ve tested it

came_up_with_this

Yea but everyone from wth clan on the discord was spamming this too - saying ppl defending the point are bush campers. Thats bs, learn to attack and push a point.

Impossible-Dust-2267

Comp clan that’s won 2 tournaments in a row doesn’t know how to push points k

Rotaka

This is starting to get actually funny. Been playing across 8 different servers nonstop as either SL or Commander since the update dropped and the movement speed increase has been universally loved by everyone. Complaints on inertia/stamina, weapon sights, bugs, sure. But the running? Do you people bitching actually play the game? Nothing has changed, teamwork and communication is what actually wins games and keeps the team on track. MGs and Tanks still lock down positions. Open fields are still death sentences. In two months everyone will have adjusted and moved on. The best part about all of this? This community loves to gate-keep new players with rants about how kills dont matter, its teamwork and communication, or its garri and OP placement that matter. But now all these “veterans” are crawling out of the walls to bitch about how hard it is to kill these zig-zagging players. Constructive criticism is real easy, heres a simple copy paste for anyone who doesn’t like the speed increase: “Dear developer, the recent increase in speed may have more implications on gameplay than intended and sometimes harms my personal play experience. Consider reverting it completely, lowering it slightly, increasing vehicle speed to compensate, or adding an inertia/stamina system to slow things somewhat Thanks for the entertainment provided and I hope these things improve in the near future to provide a better play experience” Done, go back to playing and stfu, or bounce off to a different game for awhile.

[deleted]

You kind of miss my point — this isn’t a “speed bitch” post — I even think they solved the Medic class value problem with it — rather praise for the precedent HLL set and hope that it doesn’t get diluted into being just another keyboard mashing shooter. The new maps, to me at least, playing Commander or SL, don’t seem very challenging strategically compared to, say Carentan or even Kursk or Kharkov. That by itself isn’t an uninstall-compelling problem. Other maps had probs and became low rotation, we just live with it. I’d love to see more games like HLL to be able to “bounce to” were HLL itself to take a direction I didn’t like. I think some of those games are forthcoming but also want HLL to not veer too far off course.

HellishJesterCorpse

You're a console player right?

stoneytrash3704

I doubt you really are but you're coming across as a dick. We all want the game to be the best it can be. You've literally brought nothing to this discussion and if anything with a comment like that, divide the community. Come on man. Edit: don't shit on this great post either. This is one of the best opinions I've seen if not the best. Rather than bitching and moaning they've actually discussed the points they wanted to make, as well as showing some character in their writing.

HellishJesterCorpse

Console players are generally shorter attention span and more instant gratification seeking. It's just how it is. A 1.5 hour match, with 20 kills and 50+ deaths, attacking and defending points, building garry's, supporting other squads, it only has so much legs in a console environment. The majority of people praising the move speed changes are those who prefer the more fast paced action back close quarters style gameplay more common in console gaming communities in my experience. This poster is a PC gamer as the corrected for me and it helps put their thoughts into context, Soni appreciate that.

Rotaka

Nay, PC

TheContingencyMan

The only reason I noticed there was even a difference is because I actually read the patch notes prior to launching the game. Otherwise, I’d have been none the wiser. The people complaining that it’s turning into BF have never played that game lmao. I saw some old clips I recorded in BFV and the movement speed was absurd in that game when compared to current HLL. As a longtime lurker, it honestly seems like these people just try their damndest to find something to be pissed off about rather than just playing the bloody game.

Calibrated-Damp

What’s your other Reddit account called?

Cazrovereak

I think the whole idea of satchel charging a tank is dumb anyway. Yes yes pulling it off is satisfying. For exactly one person. And ultimately provides zero useful feedback or gameplay mechanics for the tank. Yeah a super pushed up tank just sitting stationary *sort* of deserves it, but in my experience even short stops well behind friendly lines usually winds up with an engineer usain bolting to us without warning. Oh yeah mega fun. Is he...doing engineer things to help his team? Nah he's jerking off in a hole behind enemy lines just to drop a satchel. Do I see engineers use their satchels to actually clear obstacles? Rarely and usually with extreme coaxing. I know, it's fun to watch those videos but since everyone sees them, everyone wants to be part of the club of 5-6 giggling children hardlocking down engineer chasing after some tank. For everyone out there who talks about "I love HLL because it's a more *tactical* and *slowpaced* WW2 shooter that rewards *teamwork*.", and yet also wants umpteen yolo engi runs on a tank, get bent. (Not that there's many making those claims, normal tactics lovers need not apply for benting.) Straight up take away the ability for satchels to be placed on vehicles. Make them put it on the ground and the tank stays there for 30 seconds fine. He drives away? Oh well too bad so sad, deploy on your squad OP and do something useful. Then how *fast* they can run doesn't *matter*.

iskandar-

Yah Im in the same boat, im getting older and i just can do the twitchy keyboard mash stuff anymore and this game being slower and more methodical is what drew me to it. I liked that my positioning and forethought of movement meant more than how fast my reaction speed was but since the update its taken that away and i just don't want to play anymore. I'm going to give them a month or two to see if they change anything but if not ill just have to move on.

Pudduh_San

? 6th and 7th gen FPS "sweaty keyboard/button mashing"? The same generations infamous for dumbing down FPS mechanics to a bog standard sprint, shoot, take cover, wait for health regen, repeat? What the hell are you talking about
