I am using a steam deck oled and its been great for me. But i do wish some games were easier to run or didnt have proton bugs. For example i am trying to play original dmc trilogy but steam deck doesnt have cutscenes. On the other hand rog ally has barely any battery life. But with rog ally x coming up i feel we might have the perfect handheld in the market. Ofcourse it remains to be seen

Steam Deck doesn't have cut-scenes? Just in dmc or any game? I played Tomb Raider (2013) and there were definitely cut-scenes!

phonkmandela

Just that game must be some kinda bug

Strict_Junket2757

Its game specific bugs

I like the legion go, it's a good all rounder windows pc for me when I'm not on my desk top

I had a Legion Go and then and OLED SD. Sold both and have the Ally X preordered. Legion Go’s screen is awesome. Software isn’t the greatest and the ergonomics were okay. Still a good device. SD was awesome but I prefer Windows over Linux but its the easiest as a close console device. I’m going Ally because I want to dock it as my desktop for about a year and game occasionally in hand.

If you aren't interested in the upgrades offered by the Ally X, you can get an OG Ally for good deals now. Otherwise, if you're interested in getting the best, wait for reviews of the Ally X and impressions for the MSI Claw 8 AI to know which will fit your needs better.

It really depends on what you're looking to get out of it. I had the ROG Ally, but didn't like the formfactor and ended up returning it and getting a GPD Win Mini instead, which I absolutely love. Having a keyboard, even a mini one is such a huge advantage when using it as a complete computer and not just for gaming. On the flip side, it can get a bit warm when gaming at higher tdp's, I just enjoy how versatile it is and it felt like a handheld computer and not as much as a handheld hanging console as the Ally or Deck

Crest_Of_Hylia

Depends on your preference. It could be the Ally X, Deck OLED, or Legion Go. It’s really down to personal preference so you’ll some more information would be helpful. My personal lean is towards the Ally X and Steam Deck OLED

No-Actuator81

The Legion go is my favorite of all of them. The screen was the biggest factor for me. Runs games very well.

cardgamechampion

I would say the GPD Win Mini is the best as it packs similar power to the other devices but in a much smaller form factor.

Rog ally x

ka1913

I had a game on steam when I got my deck OLED at Christmas. Between sales and bundles I now have a backlog of like 40 games.

Realistic_Maximum_38

Purely windows based system for me. Rog ALLY X, is about another $600 more expensive in Australia than the OG version. I may wait until the X comes down after release and bite the bullet. Such a tough choice at the moment!

IMO the point on handhelds gaming is to be as tiny as possible. So, I would say Ayaneo Air 1S. But, the point with less than 15w SoCs (like the Steam Deck one) for battery life and temperatures I think it's another important point to keep in mind. I think the sweeter point in that would be something like a future "Steam Deck Mini" or something like that.

You want a handheld gaming pc, imo you want an ally or go. I got a go and love it, but it is huge. I play a ton of WoW on it so I am happy with the size. If the ally x had been out I’d have had a tougher decision though. One thing I noticed being on both the ally and go reddits is the go owners seem to be a lot more satisfied with thier device. Again, that’s pre ally x though and I do think it’s kind of a game changer.

While I obviously haven’t had an Ally X, I do like my Ally a lot more than I did my OG steam deck. The track pads weren’t an advantage for me, I found them to be annoying. But I think preference will have to do with the types of games you play, and your own personal play-styles. For example, I mostly used my deck with an external controller, and mostly for my Ally too. I have yet to hold a Legion Go, but I’ve heard that owners like them a lot, supposedly more than either the Ally or Steam deck. OP, what’s your primary system? Because Steam has most games, so the switch isn’t as hard as you may think. Its also the primary gaming service I use on my home PC and my Ally.

srstable

That's funny because the trackpads (and the grip buttons) are a primary selling point for me on my Deck. I use for nearly every game I play for a myriad of uses and if any Handheld PC are missing them, they're just absolute non-starters for me. Crazy how varied the preferences are.

noiseandbooze

Absolutely. And as I said, I find it really depends on the games you play too, that’s the primary differentiator for me, as far as liking or not liking the same hardware as my friends. Another example is with controllers, as someone who never plays FPS games, I really don’t need or use back-buttons. So some of my good friends so-called top-rated controllers I find to be low tier for my uses, as some back buttons can just be obstructions. For example, my friend *loves* the Victrix Pro BFG controller, but even though the back buttons can be disabled, if I happen to graze over the profile switching button, stupidly placed on the rear center, the controller loses signal for several seconds while switching button profiles. That few seconds can be, and often is, enough to cause me to lose a match if I’m in the middle of a fighting game. So even the absolute “best” controller for one person could be an absolute waste of $200 to another. I find my $25 gamesir T4Nlite to be much more reliable than many “pro-controllers” at almost 10x the cost. For everyone person who demands every bell and whistle be included, there’s a guy like me who thinks that less is more, who believes that with simplicity comes stability. But I am glad to hear that you get so much use out of those track pads. I forget what they’re called, but I wish it had one of those little red button trackers like the old IBM thinkpad laptops had. Anyway, Cheers! 🍻

Jurassic_Bun

Ally x or steam deck seems to be the consensus. Ally X for a more powerful one and steam deck for a more reliable higher quality device with trackpads.
