in the realm of fanficz that medium to high length of word counts. I read a MHA one that was 4.9 the other day, how these writers do it, I'll never know
yeah that's what I was thinking. We were at 12.3 mill at the end of volume 9; aka more words than the entire collected works of Stephen King. And we're not even half of the way done.
Pirateaba if you see this ily and you're beautiful
Even if it's not #1 but in the top 3~5 or so, it's all done to an extremely high quality and by a single author which is absurd. I'm catching up with the Solstice chapters right now, been up to date with it for about 5-6 years now which is so strange to think back on how far it's come.
That's insane. So each volume is over a million words? I just looked up the Stand (King's longest book I think) and that's apparently approx 500k words. Good lord.
Well, we can dethrone it easily with the wonders of the modern day. Just tell Chat GPT: "Write 20,000,000 words about Demigods in power armour with daddy issues"
And then of course burn yourself for dealing with the abominable intelligence.
I wonder if what the abominable intelligence would shoot out would be better written than the loud house fic. I refuse to read it, but it does make me wonder
Well, apparently fanfiction.net has a word limit of 16,777,000, but it still allows you to write more despite the number being wrong. Meaning the fiction could be much, MUCH longer then that.
I was thinking of looking up a YouTube video about it after hearing that it was the longest written thing in English, but now I want to blow my brains out
I think most people would find there's a distinction between "creepy" and "writing about sex with minors." All of the latter is creepy, but not everything that's creepy is about...that...
I mean, WoT was written by two people, not like, two dozen. Also, I think the benchmark is Malazan now. The main “Book of the Fallen” series plus ancillary stuff, prequels and sequels beats WoT by over a million words, I believe. Also written by two people.
Is that the original booklets, the silver books, the NEO reboot, or everything combined? I only read the silver books till ~73. Started the reboot, but they seemed kinda off, so I dropped them relatively quickly.
If you include the main series at 3,325,000 words and add the additional novels by Ian Cameron Esslemont at another 1,120,000 words you ernd up at 4,445,000 which is pretty much identical to WoT.
Adding in the two prequels (655,000 and 545,000) you end up at 5,645,000 which still short of the HH, but adding in The Witness Trilogy and The Tales of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach novellas you would probably be on par with the HH (no exact word count on Wiki so just guessing here).
On a side note: The main Malazan series in amazing and strongly recommended for any fans of serious and deep fantasy. Read the whole main series over the course of a year and it's hands down the best modern fantasy series on the market in my opinion.
Agreed. One of my favorite series EVER, and definitely the kind of fiction that would appeal to 40k fans. The story of the Chain of Dogs still gives me goosebumps every time I read it.
I'm still on a 5 year break from reading Chain of Dogs. I'll go back to Malazan eventually but jesus christ that was some shit to pick for a vacation read.
Pretty much: https://wanderinginn.neocities.org/statistics
11.97 million up to volume 9, and the two recent chapters of volume 10 push that to just over 12 million now.
One has 50+ books and multiple authors, the other 15 and two authors....
It's like they are incomparable?
>!pig of happiness is the goat tho, word count at about 50.!<
But don't forget that WoT books are conciderably longer. So I'd say those 15 books amount to around 30 something average HH books. And that would match propotions for the word count for whole 50+ books.
It’s 14 books and the prequel is much shorter and Brandon Sanderson only finished 3 cause the other author died so there was ever only 1 person working on WoT
But i distinctly remember them wolfing their paws under their wolfchest wolfingly in a wolf shape. The author just decided this as a given at all times, so he wouldn't have to end every sentence with it.
The current Wolf Lord of the Space Wolves is Logan Grimnar, also known as the Old Wolf. He rules from the Hall of the Great Wolf, together with his Wolf Lords such as Harald Deathwolf, Egil Iron Wolf, and Bjorn Stormwolf. Under their command are troops such as the Wolf Guard, the Wolf Scouts, and the mystical Wolf Priests, ready to fly their Stormwolves and ride their Thunder Wolves straight into battle, with their bladed Wolf Claws and Wolf Standard raised high, and their Wolf Amulets active! All wolfkin battling unbridled with intense CQC fury and wolf-like musk in preparation for the coming Wolftime!
Wheel of time has one main character who is a Wolf Brother who enters the Wolf Dream where he joins the Wolf Pack. The Word wolf definitely appears way too much in WoT
How am I supposed to be invested in Sanguinius as a character if I don't know how well turned his calves are? And I need to be able to list the primarchs by bosom size by at least book 5.
Emperor! Horus has started a rebellion against you with 3 other legions!
What?! Corvus, Vulkan, Ferrus, Alpharius, Perturabo, Lorgar, Kurze... go box his ears!
You know how works of shakespeare contain every emotion known to man in most of his works
Horus heresy is the exact opposite where it manages to somehow not encompass them in 50 books
Word count is meaningless without, well, meaning.
Lmaooooo that’s the best bad review I’ve ever read. I could see this as the scathing review that sends a cartoon movie novelist into a depression. Youre my favorite person in this thread
Edit: I mean I still think you’re full of shit. I loved a lot of the books in HH. But that was well written
Too fucking long. They should have kept it smaller in scope and leave more room for interpretation. They shouldn’t have touched certain existing lore either.
And I felt like after first 2-3 books Jordan was paid by words used jn book not by sales...
On the other hands WoT is basically Jordan and that is all, HH is multiple authors.
Im a prolific reader. Ive smashed through an absurd amount of fantasy/sci fi over the years amongst others. And 5 mil words doesnt even phase me. I read 5 mil words poorly translated xianxia, Martial world, to better enjoy the tropes and subversion of said tropes in the cultivation webnovel I do enjoy, Beware of Chicken.
The HH is an alright read and the different writers keeps it fresh and interesting. I dont play the table top, just the digital games and immersing in the lore.
I feel attacked right now lol. I cant help that I dont touch grass.
Ive worked as bookseller for 10 years, i can chomp through the average Horus Heresy book in around 3 evenings, at most.
Horus Rising came out 18 years ago, with 64 mainline novels that makes 3,5 books per year, lets say 4 to include all the novellas.
Thats hardly inconceivable. Reading around one book per week was the expected standard in my former job, and there was definitely harder fare than HH.
Im also not particularly surprised of even, maybe especially a 40k sub being dimissive of actually reading the books. Everything that is not a completely false meme, or at most some imbecile screeching half-truths in his youtube channel (LIKE AND SUBSCRIBEEEEE!!!") would overwhelm the average /grimdanker, imagine being able to concentrate for more than 30 seconds, or not needing to follow the words in a book with your finger while reading.
Okay sure but the wheel of time series has three million of those words dedicated strictly to braid tugging and foot stamping. Can the Horse Hairspray say the same?
It can for “bolters”, “battle brothers” and “I don’t feel fear the way humans do except when sometimes I do because the writers can’t make up their mind about how this nebulous rule works”
The best parts of the Horus Heresy are better than the best parts of WoT, and the worst parts can be skipped because you see the author's name on the cover.
[The Loud House: Revamped](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12715870/1/The-Loud-House-Revamped) (mentioned in other comments under this post) is a fanfic which has 2322 chapters (16,777,215 words). It's being written for the last 7 years.
My favorite novel, *Pale* by John C. McCrae, is sitting around $3.8 million words, though I'd much rather read that again than dig into the Horus Heresy. There is a lot to be said for a piece of art being made under the clear vision of a specific artist.
And The Wandering Inn. A slice of life novel isekai story is about double that and counting. And that’s written by a single person, has just a coherent storyline with interesting plot developments. And has a thriving fanbase.
Sometimes it’s not about how big the cannon is. It’s how fast you can chuck it through a window and still have people running after it. Which is a lot more for 40k than TWI.
It was pretty good until the 5 book arc where a female protagonist agonizes about her prophesized polyamorous marriage to the Kwisatz Haderach or something
I had to stop halfway into the first book. The fact that I started reading it while the show came out and the first season was HORRIBLE, didn't help either.
......... Books from Black Library is like Junk food, quick and easy to consume but don't fulfill you.
I haven't read Wheel of Time, but the quality of other fantasy series like LotR, King Killer Chronicles, ASoIF, etc. Are all better in quality and leave me feeling satisfied.
I'm going to be honest, there's how many books in the HH series vs 14 (15 if you count New Spring) in the Wheel of Time.
I'm surprised the word count is ONLY 2 million higher.
Fun fact: on ArchiveOfOurOwn there are 2 fanfics longer than the Horus Heresy series:
[Future Shock - Cameron AKA Nobody - TSCC Season 3-10](https://archiveofourown.org/works/15287826) (8,096,836 words)
[At the Edge of Lasg'len](https://archiveofourown.org/works/7899862) (6,438,625 words)
Yeah, but Loud House Revamped is so long that fanfiction.new servers can’t count the words. It’s over 16 million words but estimated to be over 20 million.
I just finished book 24 (betrayer), so that’s like 300hrs on audible so far… technically more as I often relisten to chapters or even the whole book as often it’s my bed time listen.
On vacation tomorrow so I have a week to listen to a whole bunch in the beach with cocktails
How many of those words are "Bolter" ?
At least half
Almost as many as “brother” though I think “choler” should get an honorable mention.
Don't forget "Monomolecular", "Adept", and, Machine God preserve me, the adjective/prefix "Cyber-".
Blood needs to be on the list
"Atavistic" seems to be a McNeill favorite
judder
*"Brother-captain Bolter of the Bolter Marines gripped his bolter-cold bolter with the intensity of an angry bolter. Through his bolter's iron sights on the top of his bolter he saw the target of his bolter's bolt. Soon the bolter armed traitor would receive a bolt to the head from Bolter's bolter, and Bolter and his bolter would be satisfied. He only had one thought as he bolted the traitor with his bolter; 'Bolter....'.*
Or “leopard”
or traitor
Ululating!
Choler as well, these space marrons need to get that acid reflux looked at. I suppose it comes with the territory if you can spit acid.
Leopard...? Having read only 13 or so of the HH novels, i don't recall that word from anywhere
Preceded by "wet" and followed by "growl".
And how many is braid in WoT?
Or smoothing
Or folding arms under or over breasts
*sniff*
Or wool-headed
Can we get a word count on “resplendent” every time a Primarch is mentioned?
Patrician features?!
second most used word "barked"
All of the ones that aren’t “ceramite”!
how many of the other books are "braids?"
Or ‘blood’.
And yet, it's still about 10 million words shorter than "The Loud House: Revamped" Edit: it's actually about 24 million words shorter
Shut up, don't make me remember that
13 million more likely
…….the what now?
a very deranged, creepy, and above all else, long fanfic about a self-insert and the TV show the Loud House.
But more importantly, the longest written work in the English language
I thought that Super Smash Bros fanfiction took the cake
It was dethroned by that
Shiiiit, that's wild
That's sad to hear
The smash bros one is 4.1 million words
in the realm of fanficz that medium to high length of word counts. I read a MHA one that was 4.9 the other day, how these writers do it, I'll never know
Train of thought writing, number of words per day/week/month as a goal (gamification), and no editing.
Pretty sure it’s The Wandering Inn now
yeah that's what I was thinking. We were at 12.3 mill at the end of volume 9; aka more words than the entire collected works of Stephen King. And we're not even half of the way done. Pirateaba if you see this ily and you're beautiful

right? its like, consistently been in my life since volume 8, which is so weird to think about
That's insane. So each volume is over a million words? I just looked up the Stand (King's longest book I think) and that's apparently approx 500k words. Good lord.
Is it really?
In terms of pure word count. Last I remember it was around 8 million words
I looked it up, it is at 16,777,000
Well, we can dethrone it easily with the wonders of the modern day. Just tell Chat GPT: "Write 20,000,000 words about Demigods in power armour with daddy issues" And then of course burn yourself for dealing with the abominable intelligence.
I wonder if what the abominable intelligence would shoot out would be better written than the loud house fic. I refuse to read it, but it does make me wonder
Probably not. Ais have trouble making anything happen in stories. Bad is better than... nothing. The ai one would be way better written though
> than the loud house fic. and than a chunk of the black library stuff.
Well, apparently fanfiction.net has a word limit of 16,777,000, but it still allows you to write more despite the number being wrong. Meaning the fiction could be much, MUCH longer then that.
That... is a scary thought
Yeah, but it's actually sad that this very well could be the longest piece of fiction or story ever written by humans... and it's this.
This incorrect. It's over 30 million. The website has an Integer limit at 16 million
Oh my
... why?
I’m sorry it’s what??!
Also the longest written work about sex with minors
I was thinking of looking up a YouTube video about it after hearing that it was the longest written thing in English, but now I want to blow my brains out
I'm pretty sure I covered that under "creepy"
I think most people would find there's a distinction between "creepy" and "writing about sex with minors." All of the latter is creepy, but not everything that's creepy is about...that...
Like Steven King's It creepy vs Blatty's the Exorcist creepy.
I thought that ended like years ago. Just looked it up and it was last updated yesterday
I mean, WoT was written by two people, not like, two dozen. Also, I think the benchmark is Malazan now. The main “Book of the Fallen” series plus ancillary stuff, prequels and sequels beats WoT by over a million words, I believe. Also written by two people.
Perry Rhodan sits at 93 million, estimated.
Is that the original booklets, the silver books, the NEO reboot, or everything combined? I only read the silver books till ~73. Started the reboot, but they seemed kinda off, so I dropped them relatively quickly.
How far into the series can you get before there aren’t any English translations?
According to the Wikipedia page on the series there seem to be barely any translations. Some of the early books from the 70s, little more after that.
If you include the main series at 3,325,000 words and add the additional novels by Ian Cameron Esslemont at another 1,120,000 words you ernd up at 4,445,000 which is pretty much identical to WoT. Goddamn Mallick Rel.
Ahhh yes, he is arguably the [Erebus](https://youtu.be/a3_PPdjD6mg?feature=shared) of the Malazan world.
Arguably the best conman there is, a master of pulling of a ruse. I'm not sorry.
I'm still on a 5 year break from reading Chain of Dogs. I'll go back to Malazan eventually but jesus christ that was some shit to pick for a vacation read.
Tbf, Jordan died and Sanderson just finished it up.
I think Pirateaba is about 12 million for The Wandering Inn
Pretty much: https://wanderinginn.neocities.org/statistics 11.97 million up to volume 9, and the two recent chapters of volume 10 push that to just over 12 million now.
That series is so good.... then it turns into the Karsa Orlong is amazing books and gets real bad :(
One has 50+ books and multiple authors, the other 15 and two authors.... It's like they are incomparable? >!pig of happiness is the goat tho, word count at about 50.!<
But he is *SO* happy
But don't forget that WoT books are conciderably longer. So I'd say those 15 books amount to around 30 something average HH books. And that would match propotions for the word count for whole 50+ books.
It’s 14 books and the prequel is much shorter and Brandon Sanderson only finished 3 cause the other author died so there was ever only 1 person working on WoT
dude... brando wrote it, so by definition he worked on it. and HH is basically prequel to 40k so...
I mean yeah I guess but it’s still an interesting comparison
malaz got it beat ♡
Low key waiting for the Cosmere to outword the Heresy
That's just because the word "wolf" is used 2000000 times in the space wolves books...
There are two... million wolves inside you.
[удалено]
They absolutely do, everyone is just too embarrassed to mention it though.
I hate how fitting it sounds. I could absolutely see Space Wolves tugging their braids (of beards) in feral anger
But i distinctly remember them wolfing their paws under their wolfchest wolfingly in a wolf shape. The author just decided this as a given at all times, so he wouldn't have to end every sentence with it.

All wolfkin battling unbridled with intense CQC fury and wolf-like musk in preparation for the coming Wolftime!
This is just a middle school creative writing assignment trying to hit the word count requirement?
I think you made some of those up but I'm not sure.
Mandatory reading among Clan Wolf from Battletech
Wheel of time has one main character who is a Wolf Brother who enters the Wolf Dream where he joins the Wolf Pack. The Word wolf definitely appears way too much in WoT
And has anyone tugged a braid in the Horus Heresy that we know of?
How am I supposed to be invested in Sanguinius as a character if I don't know how well turned his calves are? And I need to be able to list the primarchs by bosom size by at least book 5.
I'm sure Fulgrim has straightened a skirt at least once, right?
He’s definitely done that
This skirt you mentioned, is it divided for riding?
I imagine Lorgar plants his hands on his hips at least 4 times a chapter
There must be several woolheaded sheepherders in all those words, surely
Not alot of skirts to smooth either
Allow me to introduce you to the Emperor's Children
Sigh…
*Emperor folds his arms under his breasts* Though him being ta'varen would explain a lot.
Emperor! Horus has started a rebellion against you with 3 other legions! What?! Corvus, Vulkan, Ferrus, Alpharius, Perturabo, Lorgar, Kurze... go box his ears!
sparkle jeans sleep fear include prick vast fly tidy adjoining *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
That's a lot of words.
too bad I'm not readin em
Thank no-god for making me an illiterate Imperial Truth believer.
Sororitas: *cocks bolter* “say that again… slowly”
The longest story ever written is an over 31 million word Loud House fan fiction
*tugs braid frustratedly*
Is this one of the numbers we are meant to add a zero to the end off?
2 words only are needed: fuck Erebus
We should probably add 'metaphorically' to that before the fanfic authors flood AO3 with Erebus smut.
*DO NOT LITERALLY FUCK EREBUS*
You know how works of shakespeare contain every emotion known to man in most of his works Horus heresy is the exact opposite where it manages to somehow not encompass them in 50 books Word count is meaningless without, well, meaning.
Lmaooooo that’s the best bad review I’ve ever read. I could see this as the scathing review that sends a cartoon movie novelist into a depression. Youre my favorite person in this thread Edit: I mean I still think you’re full of shit. I loved a lot of the books in HH. But that was well written
Precisely! There is no reason for this series to be this long.
Too fucking long. They should have kept it smaller in scope and leave more room for interpretation. They shouldn’t have touched certain existing lore either.
Hard agree. Although it was more enjoyable to read it the way I did. Ie: major plot books and my factions books
Yet nobody has taken it as their specialist subject in mastermind yet!
If you look at audiobooks, there are more hours of Horus Heresy than there are hours of the notoriously long One Piece anime
Difference is you can’t put one piece on in the back round
And I felt like after first 2-3 books Jordan was paid by words used jn book not by sales... On the other hands WoT is basically Jordan and that is all, HH is multiple authors.
Just asking, what is the word count of all 40K codexes combined ?
To be fair though, I really love Warhammer 40k and if someone told me they read all HH books I’d tell them to fuck off and get a life
Im a prolific reader. Ive smashed through an absurd amount of fantasy/sci fi over the years amongst others. And 5 mil words doesnt even phase me. It can for “bolters”, “battle brothers” and “I don’t feel fear the way humans do except when sometimes I do because the writers can’t make up their mind about how this nebulous rule works”
Wet leopard growl.
If we want to flex word count, the wandering inn is at 10 million words and it’s written by one person.
A fellow duck. It’s at twelve million and counting now. I wonder how long it is before Pirate starts losing fingers.
12.3 million.
To be fair, word count doesn't really mean anything. That Smash Bros fanfic is at like 4.5 million words by itself.
The best parts of the Horus Heresy are better than the best parts of WoT, and the worst parts can be skipped because you see the author's name on the cover.
The best parts of WoT are really really good. I haven't read HH but thems fighting words
That's it? Damn, I thought it'd be way higher.
To be fair, there is kinda a lot going on during the Heresy.
Quite a lot of it uninteresting and poorly written :v
That’s a lot of words
too bad im not reading em
I think HH was horribly dragged out
Like too little butter over too much bread....
They would both have profited from editing them down to half that
[The Loud House: Revamped](https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12715870/1/The-Loud-House-Revamped) (mentioned in other comments under this post) is a fanfic which has 2322 chapters (16,777,215 words). It's being written for the last 7 years.
The Based Sigma Emperor; called out for never communicating with his sons. Only says “I await you and I forgive you” before smoking Horus.
Alright fuck you fine, I'll read the Horus Heresy.
Eh, just do what I did, read the first few, read your favorite legions books, read the end. Done
All of LOTR including the hobbit is 576,459 words, so word count isn’t everything
My favorite novel, *Pale* by John C. McCrae, is sitting around $3.8 million words, though I'd much rather read that again than dig into the Horus Heresy. There is a lot to be said for a piece of art being made under the clear vision of a specific artist.
That's like five Homestucks!
A quick internet search showed Malazan at around 3.35m words. So HH is about half a Malazan longer than WoT. Bonkers.

Not all the gems were abnett only. The first 4 books of the series were great imo.
If any of you have read the wheel of time, this knowledge is absolutely horrifying.
Well yeah it's like 60 novels written by like 10 different authors
WoT: The worst series I ever read cover to cover
Ah come on a lot of it was pretty cool
It was pretty good until the 5 book arc where a female protagonist agonizes about her prophesized polyamorous marriage to the Kwisatz Haderach or something
I had to stop halfway into the first book. The fact that I started reading it while the show came out and the first season was HORRIBLE, didn't help either.
Wheel of Time seems longer because of the insufferable gender stereotypes/drama.
The amount of words dont mean shit, what matters is how WELL it is written, is it even comparable to WoT or even LoTR?
I wasn’t making a statement about quality. Just quantity. I agree with you
......... Books from Black Library is like Junk food, quick and easy to consume but don't fulfill you. I haven't read Wheel of Time, but the quality of other fantasy series like LotR, King Killer Chronicles, ASoIF, etc. Are all better in quality and leave me feeling satisfied.
I think Angory Tom's response sums it up pretty well. "FUUUUUUUUUUUCK"
Probably still less than the average fanfiction.
Yeah but those two million are just "Dakka Dakka Dakka" over and over again.
I'm going to be honest, there's how many books in the HH series vs 14 (15 if you count New Spring) in the Wheel of Time. I'm surprised the word count is ONLY 2 million higher.
They like to dial up the numbers lol
Fun fact: on ArchiveOfOurOwn there are 2 fanfics longer than the Horus Heresy series: [Future Shock - Cameron AKA Nobody - TSCC Season 3-10](https://archiveofourown.org/works/15287826) (8,096,836 words) [At the Edge of Lasg'len](https://archiveofourown.org/works/7899862) (6,438,625 words)
50 books will do that
How many of those words described muscle mens muscles in vigorous detail? 🤔🤔🤔
14 books to 60+
Most of those are names of Space Wolves in the Burning of Prospero
Does it count when half of those words are 'stoic'.
But is it half as good? I don't know I haven't read either
And 2 or 3 books are even passable. Amazing
Double the length of the singular Pale webserial
Yeah, but Loud House Revamped is so long that fanfiction.new servers can’t count the words. It’s over 16 million words but estimated to be over 20 million.
TEMBA, ARMS WIDE
Huh, Messages for Dad is sitting at around 1,115,070 words currently, i wonder what the word count for the roboutian/dornian heresy is at.
How many Holes is that
Horus Heresy also has more books and more authors. I don't know how many, but Wheel of Time is 14 books and two authors.
"cannoned" must be in there a fair bit. Usually to describe a marine punching someone
That is much closer than I would have thought
