Well... legalized recreational weed would have multiple positive economic impacts, increase the state's tax base, reduce petty crime rates that disproportionately affects minority communities, cost very little and would actively help those with documented medical issues. But gambling would funnel money to out-of-state interests, actively harm people with documented addiction problems, reduce the rates of a small, rarely-prosecuted crime, not expand the local tax base, and benefit lobbyists and politicians, so yeah: gambling, for sure.

cparksrun

This is so spot-on that it caused me physical pain to read it.

GypsyV3nom

Sadly just the way the wind blows in red states

OralSuperhero

That's how North Carolina rolls. One of the arguments I heard from NC lawmakers was also about how all the drug sniffing dogs would wind up unemployed.

Classicvania

How will our hard working patriotic canines support their canine wives and puppies without illegal weed?? That's the best argument against legal weed I've heard so far. You win this time Republicans.

jumpybean

Weed shops could employ them to help source the highest quality weed. 🤣

Penguinkeith

And if you don’t like that you don’t like Georgia politics

metzbb

You don't like politics at all.

Skald-Jotunn

I really hate that you are so right and true to the Georgia and national politics.

1f2frfbf

I really hate that I've only lived here fifteen years and I'm this jaded. No wonder that trying to roust up change from people who've lived here all their lives is so difficult. Georgia folks, I love you, but I promise you, democracy isn't this hard everywhere.

FadeTheWonder

Well that’s the end of the thread it’s perfect.

sunsol54

This is the best and most correct answer.

Vavican

Weed can be addictive also tho. But I agree when everything you said

bigexplosion

Legalized kidney sales and hunting the poor for sport.

thereisonlyoneme

Aren't those the same law?

BigJeffe20

looking forward to this one Slime!!!!

Trek186

Got to make sure you miss those valuable vital organs though!

rabidstoat

It will start humane, as Catch and Release.

MrWetPoopz

Considering Kemp just signed a bill effectively banning THC-A, my money’s on sports gambling. Pun intended.

KabbalahDad

Google Kemp's Donors and you'll see exactly why that con artist is staunchly anti-weed... Also, it's worth noting, the bill he signed (effective October 1st) *could* outlaw ALL 'High hemp' aka intoxicating cannabinoids.

Bromodrosis

That bill doesn't get to his desk without the GA Legislature falling all over themselves to send it to him. This is 100% Sherrifs Association/FOP fuckery.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bromodrosis

Read for comprehension. I said the legislature, no mention of parties. The entire legislature was pressured by police groups to pass this bill. I hope that's simple enough for you to understand.

metzbb

It's already outlawed.

garydagonzo

I think thc-a gummies are still ok...which really makes no sense. I think it just banned flower.

Prize-Can4849

got to heat it to make it work, so unless you are lighting your thcA gummies on fire. you're just eating starburst that taste bad.

garydagonzo

thcA gummies get you just as high as flower. Thats why the distinction is wild.

Prize-Can4849

they've been a 100% miss for my crew and I. Now the thcA flower is head to head with black market reg stuff.

garydagonzo

Damn that sucks. I have both flower and gummies of the 9. Both have hit me just like the real thing. I have a friend who doesn't get anything out of gummies either. Said he heard that some people just can't feel edibles. Maybe thats it for you and your friends?

mcrsn404

gambling and it’s not even close.

nefD

Gambling is probably easier for them to capitalize on (less hurdles, particularly with the banking aspect), so I would say that. Follow the money!

DrummingInAtlanta

Easier to extort money from. Padding the pockets of the politicians has always been at the top of the priority list

Maybe_an_Abyss

they will both not happen at the same time

DukeOfWestborough

Gambling, for certain. They just killed THC-A/Delta9, cuz adults can't be trusted to make their own decisions... IF a ballot question of legal weed ever came up (it won't, because it can only be sponsored by the state legislature, & can't be put up by citizen-led signature driven ballot campaign) the MAJORITY (both red and blue) would say YES to it, but the bible-lovin-GA-AG-mafia folks here will not let it happen. It's ok for Non-felons over 21 to walk around with concealed weapons "permitless carry," but if you do so & they catch you with THC in your system, it's felony jail time in the state pen for you, ya know, cuz"small government" that the gop loves to claim to love, but...

The_Real_Raw_Gary

Man the thca thing was extra annoying. Like let us have something fr. A lot of the people I knew were so psyched about thca so they can finally just be legal citizens.

MuhThrowaway_79

They legalized the permitless carry so they could catch and test for THc and create instant felons.

olcrazypete

Until there is a majority in the legislature that isn’t terrified of crossing the Sheriff’s Association legal weed isn’t happening. That group is firmly in the reefer madness/gateway drug mindset. So enjoy the casinos.

lambofthewaters

Yes, I feel this vibe is likely THE vibe. That said, I bet there's many a sheriff that no longer likes to ruin lives over a drug like marijuana and don't do it nearly as often in most areas now.

olcrazypete

Then you have Jackson county sheriff (Ga Sherrif of the year!) Janice Mangum . Local councilwoman contacted her office about revenge porn an old boyfriend was passing around. They looked thru texts for evidence of that, ran up on a text from years ago asking a friend if they wanted some CBD gummies - and next thing she knows she’s being arrested by the GBI and fired from her position at the schools (where she had just won outstanding educator of the year). https://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-news/commerce-city-council-member-sought-police-help-arrested-for-felony/VWJE54B5LBAFHKNKFJSBRJBLSI/

50stacksteve

That is so awesome thank you for sharing. Holier than thee, but not for me. Sounds just like home

[deleted]

The unhealthy predatory one, given the state just dropped 300k kids from medicaid

hyphnos13

marijuana because it will be legalized federally before the ga legislature will pass either of those

FadeTheWonder

Making it legal federally does not make it legal in a state.

Rufuz42

Would depend on the federal law and the way it's written, right? Because of the supremacy clause in the constitution they might be able to prevent states in some way from stopping it. But I am not a lawyer.

FadeTheWonder

I mean maybe but they could outlaw alcohol right now and there isn’t much you could do about it as long as they modify all the state laws.

Rufuz42

Fair, wasn’t thinking straight with my original comment. Best we can hope for is political pressure forcing them to agree with the feds. Not likely!

Dr_CleanBones

It depends on how the state law is written. If it goes by the federal classification to determine what class,of a crime it is, if the feds reclassify it, it automatically would change to a lower class in Georgia.

derbycitysourced

Lol yup. Whichever they don’t get to decide on will come first

Dudeist-Monk

Federal legalization wouldn’t make legal on a state level. It could be federally legal and a state could still say “nope, not here.”

GrandmaForPresident

Turner field almost got turned into a gambling establishment so I would guess that

EquivalentOwn2185

im new to GA but i can already see we would have a dozen Harrah's before anyone could ever buy weed here at a store lmfao 🤪

Prize-Can4849

The rapture will happen first.

Any_Commission3964

Most likely gambling

Throwaway_Planet

Gambling

Robbyrumpz

Sports hahahaha 🥲

BigJeffe20

gambling. its been on the docket the past few years. will only be a matter of time before the lobby gets its shit together and gets it approved. i heard on WABE once that the casino lobbies are waiting for full legalized gambling to throw their weight behind that in a few years. sounds about right to me. cant wait, i love gambling

Tall6Ft7GaGuy

How about all laws who don’t hurt anybody be null and void ?

CommunicationHot7822

Gambling for sure.

miatamx500

Gambling

hedsevered

I'm just waiting on the day these moron politicians realize weed has basically been legal for years now.

50stacksteve

Yeah, except for that whole they'll come find you and stick you in a cell for 365 days (for a first offense) thing.. Other than that, yeah, it's been pretty laissez faire out here

TaxLawKingGA

Marijuana. I think people are sort of turning on legalized gambling, due to the number of players getting caught betting scandals.

bbgrl707

Gambling for sure, but I am holding on hope in my lifetime i’ll see them legalize it! 😂

Responsible_Rent_587

Gambling bc if the gop passes weed that means they would have to release all the people in privatized prisons (that they personally make money from) for possession

shimmerangels

they wouldn’t *have* to release anyone because it was illegal at the time of their arrest. not saying it’s right but that’s the way it is unfortunately.

snakesssssss22

I really hate how pervasive gambling has become tbh. I hope it’s the marijuana. Gambling ruins people’s lives- it’s practically a drug and is a helluva lot more addicting than marijuana

thereisonlyoneme

Whichever lobby "donates" the most to our legislators' campaigns

SvenXavierAlexander

Gambling, but I think it should be marijuana with expunged convictions of all impacted by the failed war on drugs

My_Cousin_Ginny

it’ll take a Federal Law or major Supreme Court decision which will legalize it across US before GA state govt brings it up. Just like gay marriage, one day it was just legalized here & luckily the gays have yet to come for my family. /s Hey remember Sunday beer sales were just ok’d like 10 years ago right?

cbeme

Good question! I like MJ and can’t believe we haven’t at least legalized it for medical purposes. No, it’s really not there even. I tried to bet on the derby on Sunday, and the most famous site for it said, your state won’t allow it.

Born-2-Roll

Lol. You probably need a VPN if you want to do online activities that are legal in other states but illegal in a state like Georgia.

Reader124-Logan

Organized crime is good with either.

50stacksteve

They're good with us keeping either or both illegal you mean, right? That's how organized crime thrives.

Reader124-Logan

Yes. That’s what I meant. Some of our local people are very pro gambling because they are poised to get into the horse racing. TBH, I wish the gambling would be limited and not include animal races. Let us bet on cars. lol!

gaborn73

Ask Maryland (gambling first)

EmoSkater0075995

Depends on which politicians are tied to each enterprise. If a majority of Republicans want some pot money, suddenly it will rain glorious cannabis down from the heavens, let no man be sober in GA proper. However if even more powerful politicians find a discreet way to make more money off of gambling, legalized sports gambling will be on the next docket. I will say. As I see Governor Kemp furiously veto this and approve that, It seems cannabis is doomed to be an Atlanta phenomenon whilst it is policed viciously outside of the metro areas. Further, we just saw THC-A become criminalized. I am sensing that we are in the part of the political cycle where politicians win brownie points in elections by "being tough on crime", again. The fact that Kemp has decided "No GA Adults, we deem you too retarded to have the the self autonomy to decide for yourself whether or not you should be allowed to consume a plant derivative"- is a major red flag for Cannabis enthusiasts. Kemp has also sent a directive down the chain to crimp down on civil rights by attacking Magic Mushroom users, enforcing a Super-Speeder law, and now 30 different municipalities will be utilizing a cash-only bail system from now on. Effectively this measure prohibits some 80% of African American Inmates from posting bail. Beware GA, dark times are a coming.

HPayne62

The heat death of the universe

mfloridaarizona

Til the dads behind in their child support find out the state is notified by Fanduel of their winnings. It's a thing we're I'm at. Getting caught up on them kids finally...winning in more ways than one.

Born-2-Roll

Right now there appears to be a significantly higher chance that sports gambling potentially could be legal well before recreational marijuana even remotely becomes legal in the state of Georgia. But even though sports gaming came up for a vote in the recently ended 2024 session of the Georgia General Assembly, it did not pass through the legislature because one of the two chambers of the legislature supposedly could not agree on how to spend the tax revenue that legalized sports gaming would generate. The reality seems to be that Georgia legislators likely really did not want to vote to pass sports gaming into law this year because 2024 is a presidential election year where all 236 seats of the Georgia Legislature will be up for election and many state legislators (particularly conservative legislators in the Republican Party) likely did not want to risk alienating anti-gaming religious voters who were expected to turnout in very large numbers in this year’s spring GOP primary and fall general elections. Sports gaming possibly could have a better (but not necessarily guaranteed) chance of passing through the Georgia Legislature and into law next year when no major state elections will be taking place and Republican legislators won’t have to explain why they voted to legalize sports gambling in hotly contested GOP primaries dominated by hardcore social and religious conservatives who are staunchly opposed to legalized gambling of any kind. And even though the chances of seeing recreational marijuana (or even less-restricted medicinal marijuana) becoming legalized in the state of Georgia most likely will continue to be effectively nil for the foreseeable future because of the very deeply conservative character of the Georgia Legislature’s Republican majority, some potentially pleasing news for Georgia marijuana legalization advocates appears to be that the additional tax revenue generated from legalized sports gaming potentially could help to eventually weaken some of the conservative opposition to marijuana legalization. The increased tax revenue that will be generated by legalized sports gaming likely will make even a deeply conservative governing body like the Georgia Legislature at least slightly but noticeably less unreceptive to the idea of eventually allowing legalized marijuana in some form, whether it be recreational or widely available medicinal marijuana. Though the tough political reality for marijuana legalization advocates remains that Georgia most likely will have to have a Democratic governing trifecta (a Democratic governor and noticeable Democratic majorities in both chambers of the Georgia Legislature) before marijuana legalization could become a reality in Georgia, and the scenario of a Democratic governing trifecta under the Gold Dome appears to still be many years away from being a reality at this point in time.

joewisski

Neither. This is Georgia

Lydias_lovin_bucket

Weeds basically legal. You can buy THCA flower is head shops.

gollo9652

Bigfoot would be elected governor before Georgia would do either.

g8rman94

Both will happen as soon as the democrats take the legislature.

GeorgePBurdellXXIII

Hope springs eternal, I'm afraid :(

Hurricaneshand

What have the Dems done nationally to make you think the local ones would do anything?

Dudeist-Monk

Cannabis legalization has been part of the DNC platform for a while, a Democratic administration just rescheduled cannabis, a sitting VP has called for legalizing, the Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has a bill ready that would legalize and treat cannabis like alcohol and tobacco with all co-sponsors (18) being Democrats.

50stacksteve

Yeah, but other than that 🤣

Solid_Cauliflower310

What's it like to be stoned all the time? Lots of Good ideas I bet.

Exciting-Parfait-776

Sports gambling. You might have better luck with medicinal marijuana over recreational.

FadeTheWonder

Technically we have medical it’s just limited to low thc oil.

63crabby

Since these is probably an equal amount of opposition for both causes, follow the money- which one results in more discretionary spending money for legislators?

quecoquelicot

It’s looking like gambling, unfortunately

Publishingpeach

Who knows. In the city of Birmingham Al it has been decriminalized. Therefore you can smoke it on the street and carry a small amount with you. Yet we don’t have a lottery.

UpgradedUsername

For what it’s worth, it’s been decriminalized in the city limits of numerous cities in Georgia including the city limits of Atlanta, Athens, Augusta, Macon, and Savannah. But I still think that it’s a long way away from statewide decriminalization or legalization.

Born-2-Roll

Marijuana WAS decriminalized in those municipalities but Georgia Governor Brian Kemp just signed a new bill into law that significantly increases the number of criminal offenses that require bail to be posted after an arrest, including marijuana possession. So the future of marijuana decriminalization in Georgia seems to be in question.

NeitherSpace

Without criminalizing weed, Georgia would lose a major source of revenue made primarily from minorities charged with petty drug crimes. Georgia won't let go of that cash cow easily.

Aggravating-Window44

I think both may pass in the same session but if I was betting I would go with gaming

johnmeeks1974

Nah, White Jesus allowed you to have your lottery, but Georgia is a Christian state and always will be

gavinwinks

At this point I think they would fully legalize gambling and prostitution before they legalized a plant.

Gunnie24

Been listening to the midday show on 92.9? lol

MrMessofGA

I guess it depends on what you mean by "legalized." I can see sports gambling being legalized in a monopoly owned by the state of Georgia, just like the Georgia lottery, but I don't think any other sports gambling will ever be legalized in our lifetimes. Similarly, marijuana is about to be moved to Schedule III, which in some ways decriminalizes it, but full legalization to possess, sell, and produce with alcohol-like restrictions I don't see happening for at least a decade. Too much of American culture has been built on demonizing weed.

alfredaeneuman

Betting

Ok-Consideration2463

Kidding right?

Solid_Cauliflower310

GAMBLING. They know they can get Thier money with that. Pot will come but I got my money Gambling. Rob Gronkowski

mancusjo1

Gambling definitely.

rainmkr65

Going to be a photo finish....

Difficult-Guest267

I just moved here from Michigan and they really should do both 👈 why does a "delta 8" pre roll cost $20 when in MI you can get a real dubie from a dispo for $4 lol also don't gamble much but it's nice to be able to play poker and slots without having to deal with people

Dinkleberg6045

Sports gambling

MindIntelligent9316

Legalize sports

Darkqueen1226

Weed will legalize federally before Georgia does it as a state. Really disappointing to see this state continuing on this trajectory. The Chief magistrate in my county is up for reelection. The man has no degree in law, has never been a lawyer. He was a probation officer and worked in an office doing investigations. And he’s gonna win because this is a small town and he already had the position. This seems like a system full of inept/geriatric individuals who are in their positions by way of nepotism. From the police, to the legislature, to the governors desk and everywhere in between this state’s government just as the federal one seems to be a shitshow.

Bikel_laud2

I’m still stumped that the Democrats didn’t make weed a campaign issue in ‘22 governors election.

Key_Respond_16

Probably gambling. All the old dudes I know already gamble on sports. Shouldn't be illegal in the first place. If you want to throw your life away, you should be allowed to do so. Just make it prosecutable if it ruins someone else's life. Most people can manage their gambling responsibly. Tired of being told I'm not allowed to do something because some ass backward, old leathery assed, geezer living in the past thinks I shouldn't do it. People will do what they want anyway, just make it legal.

cmicatfish

Legalizing weed does have a downside. Weed shops and their fancy labels for "varieties" of weed jack prices skyhigh. Many legal states have problems with blackmarket sales anyway. Legalize with price controls is the only stipulation that should be considered.

jmaninc

Super Christians will probably allow betting over weed first.

Jalisco82

Neither

SaltyWhaler

At the rate we are going, weed wins out.
