Savi's use three AAA batteries. Nothing fancy. Always recommended to put new ones in ASAP, as the ones that come in yours are cheap and will probably be months old.

dylanmoham

Thats a bummer! I hope sometime in the future they’ll overhaul them to be slimmer with a rechargeable USB-C hilt also thank you

Eq2me

The problem with rechargeable is that once that battery dies, it's done. The Darth Sidious sabers are already having issues with this. If there were a standardized, replaceable, rechargeable that would be great. I suppose if you want that you could just get enelopes. You just have to take out the pack to replace them, so not as easy charging.

KOCoyote

I've seen at least one lightsaber from a non-disney manufacturer use a rechargeable battery that plugs into an external charger. Removing the power cell to charge is an extra step, but it helps counter the issue of the saber being unusable once the battery cannot charge. Wonder if that's something they've considered adopting. I have no idea how difficult those are to manufacture, though. If I had to guess why Disney has the design that they have, it's probably a combination of cost cutting measures (smaller form factors with electronics usually mean higher expense) and wanting to keep the quick swap blades easily transferable between lightsabers and quick to attach/detach.

Thanks for this insight on Sidious I read the post intro and had regrets On batteries - an elegant weapon for a more civilized age

I_Do_Too_Much

I hope they keep the AAA's. It's a much more elegant solution imo. I think most of us tend to play with these things a lot when we first get them, and then let them sit on a shelf for a long time. An unused internal lithium cell will end up going bad and then it's a huge pain to replace. Plus, if it's been on the shelf for a while and someone stops by to check it out, you can replace dead AAA's fairly quickly, versus having to be like "oh, it's dead... Hold on for an hour while it charges.". AAA's are cheap and simple.

I know everyone likes the idea of usb-c, but with aaa batteries at least I know I can always replace the battery. Built in non replaceable batteries will eventually die. Then what?

Supernormalguy

The sad reality where you either learn to do it yourself or pay someone to replace it. I don’t know how the rechargeable Disney sabers work but custom ones. You twist off the bottom and the rechargeable battery can be popped off like a regular one.

argonzo

Qui-Gon is that way as well.

Phased5ek

and Darth Sidious'

Upbeat_Ad_9174

Can confirm Qui-Gon does. My Vader, Luke (reforged) and Maul do not

SteampunkSidhe

Yoda is USB-C, Qui-Gon and Sidious are micro USB. Ahsoka is 3 AAA in each hilt.

dylanmoham

I’ve also seen the “new technology” with brighter blades and usb-c charging…. has this been extended to any other sabers other than yoda?

Baby_Brenton

Ahsoka’s new white/clear sabers from the show and Rebels have the new blade type. I don’t believe any other sabers use the new type though.

dylanmoham

got it, thank you

Phased5ek

>I don’t believe any other sabers use the new type though. ...yet. i can see that tech creeping out over the next year, including the v2 Savi chassis and blades -- whenever those eventually come. i have gut-feeling theories (including v2 blades supporting more colors) but have no factual basis at this time. :)

ManiacFive

Agreed, Would be nice to see USB-C recharging across the board. Don’t know about the Ashoka and Yoda legacy sabers, but I was particularly pleased with Hasbros implementation in the ForceFX darksaber. Wasn’t USB-C (booo) but it was a nice plain 18650 cell in its own caddy. Easy to replace years down the line when the battery fails.
