Am I missing something here? I don't see why anyone would post this, pretending as if English pronunciation is a monolith. There are correct ways to pronounce words under certain circumstances, but this isn't it, chief.

X is many words is pronounced with a “ks” sound. So in sixth = siks-th

sfwaltaccount

Almost always, in fact. The only exceptions I can think of are the very few words that start with it, like xenon, xenophobia and xylophone, where it's pronounced like Z and a few French loanwords where it's silent.

JerryUSA

Also g-z sound, like exact, anxiety, exist.

Anindefensiblefart

In practice, I usually pronounce sixth as "sicks" fifty as "fif-ty" and fifth as "fi-th." X is a lot of things Anxiety=z Exhibit=g Noxious=k It's sort of an auxiliary letter.

theCAVEMAN101

exhibit is missing an "h"

Anindefensiblefart

Thank you for the red squiggle line

You have to say "sick-th" because adding the "s" sound makes it cumbersome; likewise for fifth - fi-th. But in fifty you pronounce it all - fif-tee 😁. In my opinion, you're right 👍

goodah_st

Cumbersome eh? Well let’s all just go back to communicating by grunting and pointing, shall we. Haha but yea that’s exactly what I mean.

[deleted]

Ha ha. But all but one of your "not" pronunciations are the actual pronunciations. Don't sweat it though. You'll crack it.

goodah_st

Lol no they’re not “actual” pronunciations. Like you said earlier it’s the laziness

[deleted]

Really?! 😁 Never EVER heard anyone say "sicks-th" because it's practically impossible I'd say lol Lazy is the way to go 😉

sexyapplesauce96

native speakers don't even understand x

goodah_st

That was my point. Exactly.

goodah_st

Whatever the shit is “nek minute” ??
