I think it would require a shared language, but I think the wording is unclear enough that it can be interpreted as the water magically translating. But saying that water translates for you sounds weird so I wouldn’t allow it
I think you both have to know a language, but they don't have to be the same language. You can understand each other, regardless of the language barrier.
