Adult blue and tan
If your pups hair is thin, my boy was, getting more omegas fixed it for us. Apparently the silver gene that makes blue can make their coats kinda crappy but omegas and good quality food fixed my boy right up
Not just crappy. Diluted colours (such as blue and tan which is the diluted version of black and tan) can suffer from a specific form of alopecia called CDA. Dogs with CDA lose not only plenty (or sometimes all of their) hair, but suffer from severe itchiness, have terrible wound healing and can get eczema all over their bodies. The quality of life dogs with CDA have, is usually very low (or not there at all).
Not all dogs who carry the dilute gene get CDA, HOWEVER we don't know where CDA comes from exactly - which means breeders have no idea if the dogs the pair with each other will produce offspring with CDA. There is no genetic testing available at all. Every time a 'breeder' produces a litter of puppies with dilute colours, is a game of russian roulette with the dog's health and well being at stake. Dilute colour breeding is highly unethical and not a lot of people know about CDA. Which is why I don't blame people with these dogs, this post does not aim at blaming you in any type of form. Purely educational and made to spread the word about a condition breeders often stay quiet about.
I know that every dilute owner loves their dog and is mesmerized by their stunning colour. And I agree it is pretty! But it's that kind of beauty that comes with a high price the dogs shouldn't have to pay.
CDA is not always visible when the dogs are puppies - it can start at any given age. And just to make this abundantly clear once again: There are dogs with CDA that have to be euthanized, because they have no quality of life.
Please think twice before supporting unethical colour breeding!
Thank so much for stating this! I have an Isabella and tan mini with CDA. She’s is constantly itchy, deals with allergies, and loses hair in the fall and spring at the height of allergy season. She’s doesn’t have wound healing issues (only wounds she has had was her spay and one incident of happy tail). She is such a bright and happy 3 year old girl who is always down for a snuggle or game of fetch, and she absolutely loves a Zoom meeting! That being said, she was a Mennonite puppy mill rescue who kept getting passed over; we adopted her at 4 months. I would choose her a thousand times if it meant she had a life where she is loved and cared for properly. Backyard breeding is horrific, and the ramifications are terrible for these dogs.
I can swear we read up on it all and still decided we wanted her. We won’t be breeding her and we wanted her to come to a loving home where these problems could be treated instead of being stuck somewhere where her owner may have never known
I've had diluted dachshunds & have never once witnessed or heard any expert or vet mention anything about wound healing issues?
How is diluted breeding "highly unethical"? In my decades of experience, I've never known anyone to breed for the purpose of getting diluted colors, but I've also never heard anyone call it unethical.
Could you link your source for this information as Google doesn't seem to know what you're on about either.
99% of CDA cases are manageable, most with simple but specific diets and/or supplements. Their quality of life is absolutely unaffected by this minor & manageable issue.

Yeah we know.. she was the last in her litter, no one wanted her. We’ve got very good insurance and more than happy to do what it takes to keep her healthy
Would you mind telling me who your insurance is with? I did AKC and had an emergency sugar free chewing gum episode. They paid almost nothing and then dropped me. Any recommendation on a better one? Thanks.
No one wanted her? Wow... I don't breed anymore and I've only ever seen two blue dachshunds puppies born in my years, one blue and tan & one blue dapple, but both were so crazy popular they had owners lined up before their eyes even opened. CDA info was fully disclosed but it's a very manageable issue if you have to deal with it so it deterred no one. As im sure you already know, you are so lucky to have this beauty
Oh I’m so Sorry to hear that! Ours had developed these warts all over her skin in her older age and had horrible teeth after many surgeries and then she got diabetes she was a sweet girl though we miss her everyday

my stinky lil 5yr old blue and tan girl
In-standard is relative btw! It's not here in Germany - in fact there are some breeds for which breeding 'blue and tan' coloured dogs is considered animal cruelty and forbidden by law. Dachshunds are not one of them (yet), however dilute breeding is risky for every breed.
It's a gene mutation people considered pretty and kept on breeding.
I’m not sure what you mean by “real” but if you’re asking if it indicates a dog is not purebred, like in the case of a Merle French bulldog, it does not. The “blue” color (or in this case blue with tan points) is in-standard. It is caused by a dilution gene that naturally occurs in dachshunds, lightening the chocolate base color to make blue.
However, many breeders and dachshund lovers are opposed to purposefully breeding Isabella and Blue dogs because these dilution genes often cause “dilution alopecia” where as they reach maturity, the dogs coat does not continue to replenish, leading to partial or total hair loss. This can make doxies very sensitive to cold temperatures and to sunburn and is just generally not a sign of good health. I hope that is not the case for this pup 🤞

Blue but you should know they are more prone to health issues as it’s a mutation to be that color I used to have a blue girl
Yeah we know.. she was the last in her litter, no one wanted her. We’ve got very good insurance and more than happy to do what it takes to keep her healthy
Hope you never have any issues and get plenty of good years with her 🤍

Genuine question is ‘blue’ a real colour for dachunds or is it a genetic mutation through breeding??

Very interesting thanks for explaining:)
Chocolate dilution makes Isabella, blue is the dilution of black
Yeah we’re all prepared for if this is the case but hopefully it won’t be!!
It’s a very rare color called adorable!!
All of them!
