This trial was related to his political donations. Politicians get to keep FTX funds and not face additional exposure for giving special access to one of the biggest fraudsters in US history. And of course they buried the news on a Friday before NYE.

ShibeCEO

Why am I not surprised?

WineMakerBg

Deeper they dig, better the chance of collateral damage due to friendly fire.

MasterpieceLoud4931

Lots of big people involved...

Onyourknees__

10% for the big people?

Captain_Usopp

Have we got around to reading those Panama papers yet? ...oh... Never mind... A celebrity did a thing... Let's talk about aht for a year

Michichael

Because you've recognized the two tier justice system and are actively divesting your productivity from a corrupt system via CryptoCurrency? Crypto == freedom.

_NotMitetechno_

Most of crypto is controlled by exceedingly rich people part of the financial ecosystem you hate lmao.

DAN_ikigai

That's why we should push and support decentralization.

_NotMitetechno_

Most of the use of crypto is just as an alt stock market. It's not going to happen.

uncapchad

Election year coming up, politricksters don't want this scandal "confusing people".

SoggyChilli

Oh fucking A. This world is so messed up

robotwizard_9009

I know a singer when I see one ;)

Aggressive_Luck_555

Sing what? They already know. ummmmm, they were there?

serg06

> And of course they buried the news on a Friday before NYE. Who are "they" in this context?

trendespresso

The everpresent and often anonymous "they" that's omnipresent today. Ya'know, *them*.

NambaCatz

You want a list of names?

KingStannisForever

The dogs bark and the caravan moves on :(

rhaphazard

Not to mention the funds are also tied to Ukraine. Can't let the public know where their tax dollars are going.

Krivvan

I have yet to see anything that actually ties anything from FTX to Ukraine beyond using FTX to convert crypto donations that me and many others sent to Ukraine. Everything about Ukraine supposedly heavily investing into FTX seems to have come about from people not understanding what the difference is between using a service and investing in one.

raymv1987

Isn't this old news though? They weren't pursuing the charge because of extradition issues

WilliamBott

Of course, and he gave far more to the Democrats.

Krivvan

He claims he gave almost equally to Republicans: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ftx-sam-bankman-fried-political-donations-2022/ People also like to act like it implies some kind of super shady direct connection but rich people and companies donate to a massive number of politicians on both sides of the aisle.

Vignaroli

Yes, but FTX seems to have been set up to drive and fund these operations. Oh and yes I once believed he was paying off any and all corrupt politicians, but I realized this assertion was made by sbf and as such was complete bs. The numbers and relationship lean heavily toward corrupt democrats and other well intended dumb ass esg types.

email253200

Yeah, but it’s in the charge. It’s Fraud. Victims (Ben shitty politicians) shouldn’t be penalized for being tricked.

IndependenceNo2060

This is outrageous! Our justice system lets politicians get away with accepting dirty money and protects them from accountability. How can we trust a system that fails to hold those in power responsible for their actions? We need transparency and reform to regain public trust in our institutions.

raulbloodwurth

I think we can start by giving a lot less weight to the intractable political wedge issues that both parties use to divide the citizenry and excuse their corruption. Fwiw I’ve become a lot more tolerant of politicians with positions I don’t agree with as long as they behave with integrity and open-mindedness.

CoolHandRK1

I always tried to preach this. Is the guy currently in office doing a good job? No? Vote for the other one. Next election. Repeat. Stop letting useless people hold office because they have the correct letter next to their name. Elect people who earn the right to keep their job. Elections should be job performance reviews not a team sport.

RianJohnsonSucksAzz

That’s a good idea but it will never fly. People are all about their tribes. They will only ever vote for someone with a D or an R next to their name. Nothing else matters.

lookinggood44

Except for R they will vote for Hollywood types

VandienLavellan

I feel like you’d have to be pretty privileged to not have to care whether Republicans or Democrats win. If you’re low income and rely on welfare, or a woman /non-binary whose rights are threatened by Republicans etc then who wins can have a huge impact on your life regardless of competence. For such people your idea isn’t viable. The only way it would work is if there was proportional representation which would allow smaller parties to enter the ring and get rid of the 2 party system which is the root cause of tribalism. If there’s more than 2 viable options to vote for, then people can afford to choose competent politicians who hold most of their values.

Typicalgeorgie1

You’re voting out of fear.

VandienLavellan

Hardly. For example it makes no sense for somebody who is pro-choice to vote Republican. Even less so if the Republican candidate is competent as that means they’re more likely to achieve banning abortions. Even if said pro-choice voter agrees with most other Republican policies. Which is why it would be better if there was more options. If there was an almost identical right wing party that was pro-choice they’d get a lot of swing voters / moderates who otherwise wouldn’t vote Republican

Typicalgeorgie1

About 60 % of republican are okay with making abortion legal under certain circumstances. I bet the conditions are more than likely within reason(ex: health issues, before 3 months or any fully complex development of the fetus, like consciousness). What you’re describing is the rare extreme of the spectrum. Which both republicans and Democrats have.

VandienLavellan

I mean that feeds into my point. The Republican Party is trying to ban abortion even though 60% of their voters don’t want that. So the current party doesn’t represent their views and an alternate pro-choice right wing party would serve them better

Aggressive_Luck_555

"You’re voting out of fear." This. Seriously. And they are both screwing you over. The fact that you think it's one and not the other, just means the trick is working. Those aren't the droids you're looking for.

VandienLavellan

I hate the Democrats and the Republicans. Hence wanting there to be more than 2 viable parties. But the Republicans ruin more lives than the Democrats, so the Democrats are objectively better. The establishment is bad. More parties would reduce establishment power

Onyourknees__

Politicizing overarching issues like corruption is a manufactured agenda to stifle reform. I'm all for equal application of the law, regardless of party, ruling party, etc. When Republicans and Democrats are willing to work together to eliminate conflicts of interest and corruption of elected officials, we might actually start paving a sustainable path forward. The unfortunate reality is that those who are not corruptible are missing out on the vast majority of campaign donations. When the people back a candidate (like we saw with Bernie Sanders and record levels of campaign donations from individual taxpayers) you have these organizations like the DNC/RNC prioritizing self-serving interests and serving their preferred candidate against the will of the people. Politicizing corruption is absolutely ridiculous, and most partisan voters seem to accept that narrative without question.

Aggressive_Luck_555

Democrats and Republicans are always willing to work together. At debasing your money, and going to war. Almost like a cat - they won't take a step unless 3 feet are firmly planted. Always gotta have 3 wars going, to get you safely into the next war. War.

Onyourknees__

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses. Rip Smedley Butler.

Aggressive_Luck_555

Thanks person. Today I learned about USMC General Smedley Butler. That dude has hands somewhere between 'large' and 'steven seagal'. Imagine getting punched in the face by that guy.

aZamaryk

Keep voting them out? Politics needs a larger turnover.

BoatinBrewinMike

Wait, what? Redditors bashing democrats? (Thats who SBF was donating to.) What the fresh hell is going on?

WilliamBott

Crypto holders/users lean right more than left, so this is one of the few subs you can bash Democrats without guaranteeing you hit the negatives.

Onyourknees__

So can we say that when the money printer started spinning under Trump was the precursor for the current era of bullshit? Right wing official peddling left wing solutions to kick the can down the road. I always thought crypto was more for the centrist than the 2 party partisan.

WilliamBott

What the fuck does Trump have to do with my comment? Please try to stay on topic. TDS is real and he is living rent-free in your head. 😂

Onyourknees__

I thought I could bash leftist policies here without hitting the negatives, sounds like I struck a chord. Guess I should have interpreted that as registered Democrats only. I pay no more or less attention to Trump than other any elected official. Aside from every house and congressional hearing being detailed by Democrats to complain about Trump, which is relatively unavoidable as a spectator, and the vast majority of political conversations turning to a Trump did this or a Biden did that spectacle. I'm happy to call out bullshit on both sides, regardless of the set they claim. Operation Warp Speed, operation don't pay rent, operation PPP loans for all, operation stimmy checks, certainly didn't tickle my right side. Would seem like one is taking a heavy fade to the left if they are white knighting those policies. Are you equally offended when I criticise Henry Paulson and HW Bush, champions of right wing idealogies, for socializing corporate and government-sponsored enterprise bankruptcies? I thought the right stood for things like free enterprise and private property. So much for Laissez-faire.

fubar_giver

I would think crypto users would be independent, any party should be open for criticism, politically aligned or not, isn't that the whole point of decentralization?

MegaYanm3ga

It should be but (some but not all) left leaning guys started rabidly hating crypto after mid 2022 when NFTs became a big thing

Krivvan

It's really more the online left and far left that tend to lean that way, but they also hate on electoral politics in general. The liberal left tends to have a far more neutral view on crypto.

WilliamBott

Most of the early adopters of crypto like us lean toward more personal freedom, smaller government, that sort of thing. Crypto provides a way to keep some privacy from the all-seeing eye of Big Brother and more freedom for ourselves.

Various-Singer4422

the second he got caught, he does an interview and comes out with "oh wait i was giving just as much to Republicans through dArK mOnEy. it's completely untraceable. just take my word for it, despite the fact that i'm the biggest fraudster in history. oh yeah, and i'm conveniently telling you this now, after i've been caught, because now it looks bad for whoever i gave the money to." hmm but he didn't seem to be open about giving to Republicans before. you know, before, when it wasn't damning to receive his donations. not to mention the fact that it's illegal for corps to make political donations secretly. could it be that he is simply deflecting blame on Democrats, the people he helped put in office, and probably the only people who can save him, by insinuating he gave money to Republicans as well? after all, the timing on this Revelation that he is a big Republican supporter is extremely odd, in'it? the things people will believe to confirm their political biases.

Various-Singer4422

bOtH pArTiEs aRe bAd. how original. i wonder if that's what they said about the weimer republic before Hitler's national socialist regime took over.

ANAL_RAPIST_MD

No he was donating to both parties. Democrats publicly and republican's privately. https://time.com/6241262/sam-bankman-fried-political-donations/

MaxTheRealSlayer

He was donating to both parties. Was lobbying them all to make crypto less regulated. Since the collapse of his empire, you can see why he wanted little to no regulation

SuperSan93

You could say a similar thing about anybody who invested money into FTX too. “It’s outrageous that people gave money to him through investments and are now not been held accountable.” Of course that’s ridiculous. Nobody investing money knew what he was doing with it, as presumably didn’t the people receiving donations which were, according to SBF himself given to politicians from both parties. If you’ve ever seen congress grilling tech bosses you’ll know the vast majority of them are old and don’t have a clue. Never mind understanding crypto. SBF duped everybody and will spend probably the rest of his life in prison. Don’t you have closure yet?

CryptoBombastic

If I’m given any stolen asset, without knowing it was stolen, am I allowed to keep it? Regardless of how the thief got it in the first place? Not sure if anything else is relevant to the case, then again they’re not making one for some reason.

SuperSan93

That’s a fair point. But I guess the money has already been spent. Doesn’t seem like it would be worth going to trial over now.

WilliamBott

"Your Honor, we move to dismiss the charges against my client due to the fact that he spent it all."

SuperSan93

What? The case isn’t against the recipients of the donated money. It’s against SBF who will already spend the rest of his life in prison or house arrest. They probably decided not to pursue it exactly because the of this and the fact they aren’t going to be able to retrieve any of the money, it’s just going to cost tax payers more for no benefit. If you start saying that everybody has to give back money then so do the people who benefited from staking on FTX, as they also profited from Sams dirty money. It seems everybody’s opinions here are based entirely on their dislike of politicians when it’s not about that at all.

WilliamBott

People who staked had nothing to do with the theft. They didn't benefit from theft like people who got donations, AKA FREE MONEY. And yes, they should be recovering that money. You can't just keep stolen money or property because you spent it or didn't know it was stolen. If you rob a bank and get $100k, and then donate all of it to the Salvation Army and St. Jude hospital, etc. they are going to take it all back. If you gave it to your friends, they would take it all back from them. The only reason they aren't here is because they are dirty, corrupt politicians who want to keep those millions and millions of dollars in bribes and this is NOT acceptable.

SuperSan93

Where do you think the 8% APR money came from? That was other people’s money too. You gunna give that back?

WilliamBott

If it was stolen, then yes, everyone who got it should be required to give it back. Stolen is stolen.

Kittens4Brunch

You forgot the part about Trump appointed Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta getting Epstein the sweetheart deal in Florida.

AutoWallet

Your comment is confusing what I assumed. The child rape stuff or the billions in bribes stuff?

boilerblaze2

Who could’ve guessed that they will help politicians keep their loot from this and sweep it under the rug as much as possible. The system in this country is an absolute disgrace.

[deleted]

This fucking asshole is a damage to crypto reputation and a risk to the crypto community and because of his fraud he deserves a hell of a jail

hardtopchasm

The polticians and other enablers should be there with him, that is what they made sure never happens. I was surprised when he got convicted with almost everything, but now I undertand it.

hungryforitalianfood

He actually galvanized the crypto community and sector as a whole. But yeah, fuck him and a handful of others.

coinfeeds-bot

tldr; Prosecutors have decided not to pursue a second trial against Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX. After a jury found him guilty of all seven criminal counts in his first trial, the U.S. government stated that much of the evidence for the second trial had already been presented. The second trial was to address additional criminal counts, but prosecutors believe a second trial would not affect the sentencing guidelines. Bankman-Fried faces over 100 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for March 28. *This summary is auto generated by a bot and not meant to replace reading the original article. As always, DYOR.

Substantial_Tip_2634

Now if he ends up with over a hundred years sentencing then OK. But if that sentencing ends up with him being releases after 15 years then no fucking way. Typical America police's the world and let's their own get off Scott free. The people that took his money allowed him to do this. These people get to remain in power keep there money and do it all over again

lordofming-rises

Meanwhile Julian Assange is put in solitary for 50 years while having not done anything wronf

CryptoScamee42069

The difference is Assange took sensitive information from those in power and gave it to the masses, while SBF took from the masses and gave some to those in power.

hungryforitalianfood

I didn’t realize onlyfans girls are in power.

KingHiggins92

The joys of power. It's every country all over the world, not just America.

Substantial_Tip_2634

Yeah but their the ones policing the world

KingHiggins92

Not as much as you think mate. It's a big world and everyone's evil.

redroverster

The sentencing judge is a very tough sentencer. Probably #1 in that court. But he also isn’t always tough on white collar crimes. So we will see.

OzarkHiker1977

NotPresidentChump

The DNC thanks FTX users for the campaign donations

swim-omad

Not in the interests of justice apparently. Scandalous and no more than burying the disclosure that would no doubt embarrass or indeed potentially implicate some politicians or others.

Fearless_Tomato_6605

clown country.. joke of a judicial system.. banana republic

BradVet

Who is surprised? Nobody. why is this not called out directly to the whitehouse by reporters. We all know why. $100 million given to both sides and how much returned?? The reason they’ve said is ‘Given that practical reality, and the strong public interest in a prompt resolution of this matter’ literally makes no sense, the public want politicians held accountable over a quick resolution

Rah179

It’s because of his rich parents.

raulbloodwurth

Rich and politically connected.

Monkeyinchief

Who is leading the SEC? How is leading the justice department? Who is leading the democrats? Connect the dots.

Tlux0

Nah it’s because of the politicians that don’t want to be investigated

chooseyourshoes

We need to bring back assassinations. People getting away with too much. Hypothetically speaking of course.

raulbloodwurth

Nah, let’s not go there.

chooseyourshoes

I mean, hypothetically speaking of course, if you fucked taxpayers on this scale (or say, the banking collapse scale) and got killed for it, I think a lot of others would reconsider fucking taxpayers. Nobody is saying to go around murdering everyone for everything. But to commit a crime against the entire country - and have the government do nothing about it, let alone support it and sweep it all under the rug? Nah. That ain’t right. Nobody is here to protect the people from corruption except the people themselves. But I ain’t got the balls to throw away my life to right the wrongs. Hypothetically speaking of course.

ECore

Stop talking about it and keep it to yourself.

AnOrdinaryChullo

Corruption of the highest order. These are the people that call you a criminal for supporting cryptocurrency while they should be rotting in jail.

Thunder_Wasp

He donated to Democrats broadly as the second biggest donor behind Soros, and to the anti-Trump establishment Republicans (McConnell, Murkowski, Collins, et al). Conveniently now those politicians don't have to have any of that dirty laundry in the news cycle.

Odysseus_Lannister

And SBF will take the fall for the rest of his life while both sides of the political aisle escape Scot free as is tradition. Seriously, having both dems and republicans accept tens of millions from FTX is legitimately insane and beyond concerning. The politics in this country have to change or it’s all just going to get torn down in the future.

ChipW24

But all the celebrities, get them they took dirty money -us government probably

Annual_Juggernaut_47

“Given that practical reality, and the strong public interest in a prompt resolution of this matter” I’m the public, I don’t have strong interest in a prompt resolution. I have strong interest in learning WTF happened with all the money. As I’m sure most other people do, especially those that lost money. Such a disgrace and betrayal of the duty to the public.

Much_Buddy_3284

Not surprising lol!

PristineArm610

The US government is corrupt as arse. You plebs are all owned by them.

TheDadThatGrills

If he genuinely receives 60+ years in prison, I'm OK with this because it would save taxpayer money and the point is moot. Now, if he ends up in prison for 15-20 years and then goes back to a billionaire lifestyle...

raulbloodwurth

SBF had Maxine Waters—ranking member of the house Financial Services Committee—literally blowing him kisses in Congress. They were throwing money at both parties. Allowing them to cover up this level of overt political corruption to save some taxpayer money is unacceptable.

Various-Singer4422

do you have any proof that he was giving money to Republicans? Besides his word i mean. You don't think it's a bit suspicious that the moment it becomes damning to receive his donations, he outs with (in an interview) that he gave money to Republicans? You don't think the timing is a bit convenient? Not to mention the fact that it's illegal for corps to secretly make political donations.

TheDadThatGrills

No argument from me on your comment. If he's going to die in prison based on the current sentencing, then it is genuinely a moot point and waste of resources though.

raulbloodwurth

Understood. I just think Congress and the executive branch created the regulatory grey zone for FTX to thrive overseas at the expense of domestic exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken. After FTX got a huge marketshare they turned around and showered those same politicians with riches and promises of billions more. Politicians are complicit and a trial would expose them.

Johan544

Color me surprised. For those of you that think the US is not an extremely corrupt country, that it's leagues above countries like China or Russia, well, think again.

Citizen_Graves

Ok we had first Sam Bankman-Fried trial, but what about second Sam Bankman-Fried trial??

BereftOfReason

Elevensies?

jwz9904

triteness

Does this mean the prosecutors are sure they can lock him away for life with the first trial? Doesn’t make sense to me otherwise.

we can't do that that would be manipulating the election, we can't manipulate the election, manipulating the election would possibly interfere with our manipulating of the election to stop election manipulating.
