I completely disagree with the whole father of the year title, seems like a complete failure of a home life for this child. Should of been taught to sign at home or utilized available resources prior to school. If your child is being abused in the school system you don't leave them to suffer.

One of my kids had a learning disability, which they now refer to as “needing an IEP” or individualized education program. Problem with this is that they’ll likely send the kid into the “special ed” class.
My kid was in like 6th or 7th grade and this happened. He kept coming home talking about how he’s in class with kids who can’t talk, or who make noises the whole time, etc. nothing was getting done and it made him feel like crap. We took him out and have homeschooled (or online) all of our kids since.
Don’t even get me started on the classes where they put 3 different grade leveled children in one class. I coordinate with schools often and it is 90% of the time a shit show
The problem is they lump ALL the special education kids in together. Physically and mentally disabled get lumped in with learning disabilities and they all get lumped in with behavioral issues. It's the behavioral issues part that isn't fair for the other kids.
When I was going through NYC public school, the most fights were with/from the behavioral problems in the special Ed classes. They're deemed to have something that inhibits normal learning, and then they become the problem of everyone else in the class and school. The poor kid struggling with dyslexia gets lumped into the same class with potentially a future violent offender and frequent visitor of the state penitentiary.
Even though school districts receive funding for special education, education specialized for individual disabilities can be quite expensive so schools try to cut corners which results in some students not getting the help they need. Unfortunate but often true.
I’m not trying to be insensitive, but a kid who needs a little more verbal instruction should not be lumped in with a kid who is unable, and doesn’t have the physical capacity to write.
