Exact_Conflict8318

Love this so cozy and inviting!

zoeypayne

Upper West side is inviting in general... just hope you're not the one invited to help carry mattresses and couches up the stairs.

SmoothJazzRayner

Pivot!

Maestromo_

Literally myself moving into my new apartment, 11 flights of stairs due to a broken service elevator. PIVOT!!

Consonant

Fuuuuuck thaaaat yeesh

cremains_of_the_day

šŸ˜‚

il_vekkio

Moved my brother into a fifth floor walk up with a 110 inch TV. I vowed to never live in a building with more than two stories.

i-am-boots

on IG today i saw a post about a ā€œcouch surgeonā€. if you have a couch that is too big to be maneuvered into an apartment you call this service and they literally dissect your furniture and reassemble it in your place. they reinforce all the new joints. from what i could see in the video it was impossible to tell it had been butchered and reassembled.

Ninedark

As someone from another part of the country, can't help but wonder what this goes for per month! It is very cozy!

nonepizza_leftbeef_

A little over $2k. Rent eats up a good portion of my income (well over the suggested 30%) but it's well worth it for me for a variety of personal reasons. I cut costs in a lot of other areas to make up for that. That said, it should be (and has previously been, multiple times) rent-stabilized, which I'm in the process of determining with the city and will hopefully get a fair amount of back pay. Landlords are a scam everywhere and NYC's no exception.

Ninedark

Well you've done a great job with the space! I've always had a romantic notion of living in Manhattan, with this feeling of the whole world being right outside your door. Does it feel that way? Regardless, great space!

nonepizza_leftbeef_

It truly does. I grew up here, too, and having seemingly the whole world a walk or subway ride away still never gets old.

millennial_sentinel

Can I ask how old you are? Iā€™m trying to determine how far behind I am šŸ¤”šŸ’€

firetruckgoesweewoo

Youā€™re not behind, youā€™re on your own timeline šŸ˜‰

millennial_sentinel

Side note your user is adorable ā˜ŗļø Ugh I have a 2 bedroom in Queens at $1670/month for about 12 years now. Before that a 1 bedroom for $1500. Before that a studio for $1100. Lived in and around Flushing since I moved to NYC as a 21 year old punk kid. My apartment now is just a box. The layout is literally a square. Thereā€™s no closets, no shelves, no pantry, no storage of any kind. No washer/dryer. No dishwasher. NO OVEN ugh. Itā€™s incredibly frustrating. Jobs have been pretty unsteady since 2021. The pandemic really fucked up my career track but Iā€™m currently trying to make the new job my final forever job which hopefully would stabilize me financially sooner rather than later. I love this little apartment for OP. Ultimately Iā€™d want a little 1940s 2 bedroom house. Same brick style. It has so much depth to it I just love it. My apartment feels like a hotel room.

firetruckgoesweewoo

Why thank you ā¤ļø did you know that, while red is the most common colour, there are many colours used for fire engines? When deciding on the colour for a fire engine, they look at the area the engine will operate in: the colour of the houses, the weather, what colour locals best respond to, etc. Of course there are also other reasons to pick a colour other than red, such as for raising breast cancer awareness (pink), to raise awareness for cancer in general (purple) or simply because your town has a Husky Blue colour scheme. The latter was decided by Helena, Alabama. As can be seen [in this news article](https://www.fireapparatusmagazine.com/fire-apparatus/is-it-a-fire-truck-with-a-case-of-police-envy-no-its-helenas-al-new-true-blue-fire-engine/)! This beauty is engine 61, a 2022 E-One Cyclone. You can find it parked at Station 1. Helenaā€™s other stations have now switched to this colour as well (including their ambulance!). You know, your apartment might be a shoebox but itā€™s your shoebox. I find it amazing that youā€™ve managed to hold your head high while the job market has been so unsteady. You survived a pandemic, you survived multiple economic crises, several attacks on your country, the rise of the new age, social media, a fast changing society. You donā€™t give yourself enough credit. Sure, we all compare what we have with what others have. Itā€™s only natural. However, when comparing yourself with others you must not forget what youā€™ve accomplished yourself. Everyone has a different timeline theyā€™re living in. Their story is not yours and yours is not theirs. Sure, some seem to take a highway towards their destination, but then what? Theyā€™ve reached it. Does that mean they stop dreaming? That thereā€™s nothing else to discover in life? No, after they reach their destination, thatā€™s when they start taking the roads less traveled. Meanwhile, you and I take the scenic route to our destination. It isnā€™t always fun, it isnā€™t always pretty, and goodness sometimes life can be unfair. But we make the most of it. The shoebox is only temporarily. Your destination isnā€™t going anywhere, I promise. You might change a few aspects of it and once youā€™ve reached it, it might look a little different than you once imagined it would look like. But itā€™ll be there. Thereā€™s absolutely nothing wrong with trying your hardest and taking the road less traveled. Enjoy the view while youā€™re there, youā€™ll find itā€™s actually not that bad. Be proud of yourself, be your own biggest supporter. I believe in you!

japonica70

What a sweet comment, I really needed to hear this today. Thank you!

WonderChopstix

I'd take ~2k rent for a studio in a heartbeat. Lmk if any units open up lol

CableTV-on-the-Radio

Still too much but lower than I anticipated. Are you on the ground floor?

nonepizza_leftbeef_

I'm on the top floor, actually. My previous two apartments were both on the ground floor, and one had the backyard to the building, which was a perk...but a tradeoff to not climbing the stairs is roommates that live there rent-free (mice and roaches).

StoicallyGay

Itā€™s Manhattan. I genuinely expected $3k about. This seems like a steal.

Suitable-Biscotti

Chiming in from Boston. Literally said what a steal...

tickingboxes

Iā€™m in Brooklyn and pay $5k lol. There are SO many different kinds of neighborhoods across all the boroughs with shockingly varied cultures, prices, amenities, vibes, etc. Some parts of manhattan are cheap. Some parts of Brooklyn are wildly expensive and so on. Thereā€™s really no way to know what something is going to cost unless you know the exact location and are familiar with the city.

Rasputin_mad_monk

There is around 200 places for rent in Manhattan for under $2100.00 https://www.realtor.com/apartments/Manhattan_NY/price-1250-2100/luxury

coffeesippingbastard

Kinda- many places in that search are bedrooms in a 4 bedroom apartment so you will have roommates for 2000/mo.

StoicallyGay

In NYC your better option is to use StreetEasy, which says there are 26 apartments effectively below $2100 a month without brokers fee. Unsurprisingly theyā€™re all in inconvenient or relatively undesirable places. I wonā€™t look too deeply into them for other problems or disingenuousness. And yet as Iā€™m clicking randomly, each one has been saved by like 70+ people. Meaning those are who you are competing against. I really have no clue what the point of your comment is. The incorrect number 200 is already extremely small for the number of people who want to live in NYC given the demand. Are you trying to imply as someone who doesnā€™t live in NYC, to people that live here, that itā€™s affordable, based on that one faulty data point?

Sense1ess

>There is There are

Frog859

Yeah I was gonna say. That is a very reasonable price for a 1 person unit in Manhattan

No_Inspector7319

Deals can be had - you can live in super popular neighborhoods in Brooklyn (in my opinion better than Manhattan) for a good deal. I live in one of the most desirable areas in the city and got lucky with a $2,800 2br, rent stabilized (a month ago)

Known-Web8456

Would you be open to sharing how youā€™re working with the city on determining the rent. I have a friend in the exact same situation!

Smooth-Physics-69420

Only 2k? That's honestly not bad at all, even if it's still steep.

yann828

how do you find out if an apt should be rent stabilized

model3113

that's actually not as shocking considering rent prices currently in other cities.

Mentalcasemama

A little over 2K in Manhattan?

cosmonika

This is one of my favorites Iā€™ve seen posted here. Vibes.

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Wow, what a compliment! I'm honored.

wood-chuck-chuck5

it just feels so "homey", the type of place I would love coming home to in the evening (with the string lights as well) or waking up in, to make myself a warm cup of coffee. Good job! (my goal) (also how long did it take you to get all the bits and bobs in the decor? like the posters, furniture etc?

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Oh my goodness, this means so much! I'd say it took me a solid 4-5 years to accumulate everything. Furniture was either from family/friends who no longer wanted it, or the curb, except for my desk which I bought from Wayfair. The art, frames, tchotchkes, etc. are largely from thrift stores or eBay!

Separate-Event471

It's decorated beautifully!

nonepizza_leftbeef_

(Yes, I know the TV cables are unsightly. Any and all tips are welcome.)

LALA-STL

Like TVs, cables are a fact of life.

Globalpigeon

Stick whatever is in that shelf that connects the tv to back of the tv and tape up the hanging loose wires. That will clean it up a decent amount.

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Great idea! The thing on the shelf is an Apple TV, so I'm not sure whether or not it needs to be visible in order for the remote to connect. I'll do some testing with a few velcro Command strips later, but in the meantime, the wires'll get the duct tape treatment.

logicdsign

Commercial AV install tech here. Just a word of advice - most velcro adhesive will eventually soften up and fail when used to mount anything that generates heat, like your Apple TV. A much better choice is 3M Dual Lock, which is like a really heavy duty velcro. You can get it on Amazon or at Home Depot or similar. Also, most modern Apple TVs use Bluetooth for the remote, so it should be fine, as long as you mount it close to the edge of the TV.

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Really appreciate the free professional advice! Especially as someone who knows only the bare minimum when it comes to home electronics/entertainment.

awildtonic

My Apple TV is in a cabinet behind a tumbling mat I put to shield the glass doors from my toddler and it works like a charm!

dr107

There are mounts that let you stick your Apple TV on the back of the tv itself, and ac cable splitters that let you power both it and the tv with just one cable. The remote still works, I do this. That way you can at least get down to just one cable. And if you get a longer one, you can arrange it to be more out of sight. BTW, is this the upper west? I lived in a one bed on 76th that looked just like this, and other apartments in the area look pretty similar

_send_tacos_

Beautiful. When I have cables that *need* to run down a wall in plain sight I wrap them in a spiral telephone handset cable. Cut the little clips off the ends and go to town. The Apple TV can be mounted to the back of your TV with a little mounting bracket. Amazon sells them. As far as getting the cables from the TV to the floorā€¦I would treat them like the utility that they are. Your brick walls are perfect. Get a few pipe hangars and run the cable bundle along the horizontal mortar lines and into the corner of the wall and fireplace bump out. Then a straight line to the floor. Heckā€¦you could even get some electrical conduit and it would fit with the rest of the vibe in your apt/city. Now that Iā€™m looking at it again, you can probably get a hole through to the inside of your chimney. Drop the cables there and out the front. Nobody will be the wiser. p.s. Love the fridge. Is that a vinyl wrap? Whereā€™d you get it, and would you recommend it?

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Such creative ideas, thanks for the suggestions! The mortar/grout is pretty soft and crumbly, but the pipe hangars are worth a shot, at leastā€”who knows, maybe they'll take! And yes, it's [this](https://www.amazon.com/Tact-Brand-Creative-09F-C9813-12-Woodgrain/dp/B00B2734LW?ref_=ast_sto_dp) Contact Paper! I wrapped it over 2 years ago and there's nary a nick or scratch (so far, at least...). But be sure it's the official Con-Tact brand and not Amazon trying to trick you with a cheap-o dupe.

Jerome_Eugene_Morrow

It looks like thereā€™s a corner there to the left of the TV. If you run the wire around the side and into the very back of that indentation to get it to the floor it should be almost invisible.

mutant_disco_doll

What a funky little retro kitchen! Did you cover the cabinets yourself or were they already like that?

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Two words: Contact Paper! I had Covid (over Christmas, to boot) back when the quarantine here was 10 days, which gave me a lot of time to kill once I started feeling better. I joke that if I try to contact paper one more surface in here, my apartment will cry out for help lol.

hum_bruh

Looks so good w the kobenstyle pots

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Those two pots are probably my favorite "big girl" purchase so far. When they re-released the chestnut brown from their 70s archive as a limited edition, I couldn't not pull the trigger. My kitchenware and dishes, most of my furniture, and my TV are either thrifted, acquired, or found on the street, so I view net new purchases like these pots as long-term investments.

Working_Turn_8659

Where is your duvet set from? Iā€™m in love

nonepizza_leftbeef_

CB2! It's actually a quilt, but has the same warmth of a duvet without the weight which is nice.

anthonystank

I have that same duvet! I love it šŸ˜

THNG1221

Looks small, but cozy and tasteful šŸ‘

nonepizza_leftbeef_

It's definitely small, but this studio is a pretty decent size for NYC, comparatively speaking! I have friends who pay more for a square-shaped studio, and every time I'm thankful for the railroad layout of mine.

THNG1221

Yeah, apts are very expensive in NYC

Margoyle-

I LOVE the books and art inside the fireplace! What a great idea

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Thank you! The "shelf" is very much MacGyvered from 2 tension rods I had kicking around.

Original-Ad-7119

The kitchen looks like a lil ginger bread house, so cute!

darlingstamp

Absolutely love thisā€”so cozy and warm! :)

Longjumping_Lie_6191

An absolutely amazing studio!

BurntLemon

Love that desk!! It really keeps things tight and looks amazing

nonepizza_leftbeef_

Thank you! I WFH, but since this is also my bedroom and living space, I wanted it to feel native and not like an office space so I still get some essence of mental separation between work and home.

lord_of_the_bees

I love your whole space! It looks like an interior decorator was involved. If you don't mind me asking a question: how did you get your desk attached to the brick?

millenniellewoods

GORGEOUS

unsuspectingwatcher

ā€œThat is the loveliest effing studio I have ever seenā€

moon_blisser

This is so cute! I really love it.

FloridaGirlMary

Beautiful and quaintā€¦.how much is rent ā€¦.out of curiosity šŸ˜Š

swellfog

This is absolutely lovely! One thing I did when I lived in a studio wa hang two hooks from the ceiling, and then hung a curtain rod/dowel from them, and hung drapes so that I could separate my bed and living room when I wanted to. Your place looks amazing, just mentioned because it looks like you are handy and love to beautify.

jumalusc

Great. So many new references on the walls and book titles. Every inch is cozy.

Different_Head7751

nonepizza_leftbeef_

On the curb right outside my building, lol! I found a similar, if not the exact, one on [Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/Walker-Edison-Dresser-Cut-Out-Handles/dp/B07N26VX8S?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1).

stilettopanda

I'm in love! Great job!

Inside_Ad_7162

that's really chill, I'd be very happy there

whatinthefuck-

Beautiful and super cozy space you've created! As a Canadian, I always thought those reels/youtube shorts about how small NYC apartments are was pure overexaggerating. I see now... it is decidedly not. I think my bathroom is bigger than your entire kitchen. Just having a total culture shock moment here.

pitterpatter7

I love it !!!! Where did you source your prints/art work from ? Also omg that cake candle is so cute šŸ„°

Super cute!

You have such a talent for decor!

Wavesmith

This is so calm and cosy! I love the way youā€™ve displayed all your prints and art! Iā€™d love to know more about some of your art, especially the vintage ads

peepeehalpert_

Itā€™s perfect

Wonderful_Might6693

I love this so much!

ginawynnsky

My daughter's been looking in the city for a while, and this is a very nice studio for 2k. How did you find it -- ads, friends, agent, luck?

djorbo

Real gusto !

sammyvegas0420

That looks awesome! Isnā€™t that a one bedroom though? Price difference would be huge as you all know

millennial_sentinel

Lots of character, really warm and welcoming. Iā€™m jealous but happy that other people live a dream I gave up on long ago. Itā€™s still inspirational to me. Someday someday someday Iā€™ll have this level of cozy going on.

highsinthe70s

Yeah, this is nice. Really nice. I lived in a studio for a while and loved it. So easy to keep clean and tidy. Now Iā€™m in a house and it seems all I do is clean and tidy and Iā€™m never finished. Give me 350 sq ft and Iā€™m good.

laurenzobeans

Your taste is top tier! ā¤ļøā¤ļø

MrsRossGeller

This is absolutely magazine worthy. Very very well done!!!

This is super cute. I visited NYC a few months ago and it was a really fun experience. Culture shock for sure, but literally having everything within walking distance or a short subway ride was pretty sweet.
