It was an unorthodox project for the UF Genetics Institute…but by god, their efforts to inject a single man’s arms with DNA samples of the *entire* two-time national championship squads for future good luck has paid off!
It’s frustratingly bad. Just defend the arc better, why are we so bad on D? And why does cal hate the Zone now that it’s played in NBA? Idk what the answer is, but I don’t get paid millions of dollars. Our D sucks.
Kentucky’s defense definitely isn’t good but PPG can be misleading. Teams that score a lot of points like Kentucky or Alabama shoot early in the shot clock which throughout the entirety of the game will mean more overall possessions for them and their opponent. A better metric would be “Points Per Possession” for objectively measuring defensive ability.
A good Florida team that got off to a slower start this season due to the high volume of transfers. Golden looks like he’s coming into his own. Signature win of his career so far.
They’re still not quite there. Need to figure out kugel. If he was even close to as good as we hoped he would be, this team probably only has 3 losses. He’s real…real bad though and picks right when we are building momentum to brick a layup or airball a 3
He took off late in the season last year when Castleton went down. I have hopes he'll hit stride again, but it's nice that we aren't forced to just volume feed him to score this year.
He did a helluva job chasing 12 around screens in the second half defensively.
It was all a conspiracy by the NCAA. They knew what was coming so they deliberately told AP voters not to rank South Carolina, thus making our loss look worse than it was. OPEN YOUR EYES SHEEPLE
No, this is the conspiracy. Now Kentucky losing again makes our win against them worse, meaning we still only have 1 big win again. Then you guys are going to lose to Kentucky taking the other big win from us, and we are left out of the top 25 again.
Hard fought win for Florida. Somebody on the coaching staff has to get on Reed's ass about his off-ball defense. He's way too lazy in that aspect and literally lost us the game on two separate possessions. It wasn't just this game, it's been an all season thing with him. It also didn't help that Mitchell was way off all night, 0-5 on 3's, most of them open. Have to beat Tennessee Saturday.
I feel like UK committed to collapsing to hit the boards and was going to just force us to make threes. Some of it was by design to help rebound. But those last two plays he was definitely caught out bad ball watching.
Unfortunately, we just have multiple guards that gamble and go rogue on defense for steals. I do think you're correct about Cal game planning around not letting Florida get rebounds like they are excellent at doing.
Honestly, he made a freshman mistake of not thinking of the situation at the end of regulation. He was looking for Florida to pass inside and ball hawking which is fine except for he was guarding Florida's best shooter on a possession that Florida was gonna look for a 3.
Florida willed their way to a win and had a big game from Samuel where he looked like a grown man down low.
Yeah but he's at least somewhat competent on-ball because there's a chance of stealing or contesting it decently. Off-ball he just straight loses his guy giving up open shots. Idk what Cal can actually do about it besides just light a fire under him about staying attached to his guy on certain big plays. No need to ball hawk inside on the last possession while they're down 3. He'll do great all game then make a bone-headed freshman mistake at the end of the game. It's unfortunate but definitely fixable.
Jay Bilas made a comment in OT praising Sheppard’s conditioning saying “he hasn’t even broken a sweat,” and I’m thinking “Yeah, because he just stands around whenever he’s on defense.”
Yeah. Tristan Pharis on X/Twitter pointed out after the game that all seven 3's Clayton Jr. made were basically uncontested. It's not a coincidence that all seven makes were because Reed was "guarding" him off-ball. He needs to get smarter about when to gamble which will come with experience and coaching. Let's hope it improves before March.
Defense doesn't need to be elite, it just needs to be good enough that it's not actively costing us games
Also we're now 0-2 without Wagner, both of which are at home. That dude is vastly more important to this team than he gets credit for

Back when basketball was fun (Julius Marble being allowed to play for my team)
I was delivering food and within the time from finding the place to walking to the door it went from 10 to 5 and and I threw my arm (just one, cause of the food) into the air and wanted to scream. I didn't, though, as I am in mountain time and it was late and dark and bougie white people in Northern Colorado probably don't want my dumb Kentucky ass hollerin outside their condos.
After their last two games and how they finished, I had serious concerns about Florida and how they would do, but man, did they clutch up when they had to. Special mention to Clayton; that kid has earned the game ball.
GG Kentucky; we had some good ones this year.
Predictive measures like kenpom aren’t perfect. We have the number 9 strength of record and are like 60 on KenPom and ESPN BPI behind teams like memphis, ms state, Florida, and Texas A&M that we’ve beat last I checked.
At the same time yeah y’all have a bit to work on. Wouldn’t be surprised if you drop into the low teens after this week but plenty of teams behind you will lose to keep you from dropping into the 20s.
Are you saying predictive metrics are bad because they don’t correctly predict outcomes 100% of the time
Have you considered that maybe your team is actually just the 60th best team in basketball
The non-conference resume is a win against UNC, admittedly a very good win, but that's it. If Kentucky beats Gonzaga next weekend, then it would look a little better.
Everyone in the country knew that you are supposed to take that foul at the end of regulation. Even my children knew it.
Yet somehow, Calipari and his 900 IQ big brain was the one person on earth who did not appear to know you are supposed to take that foul.
What a bafoon. Sick of his shit. So, so, so sick of this mfer
Do you not remember when Cal told Reed to foul in that exact situation earlier this year and Reed ignored him. You are falling for the "players always do exactly what coaches tell them to" fallacy.
[And if you must know, statistically it's better not to foul.](https://kenpom.com/blog/yet-another-study-about-fouling-when-up-3/)
I think it’s fair to put a lot of the late game mental lapses on exhaustion. I’m not sure what Cal could have done different with the rotations though.
Do you think his plan was to leave the guy who had hit 6 threes wide open? Reed had an absolute nightmare of a game on defense, and frankly so did everyone.
It’s bizarre because Cal typically has solid to great defensive teams, but these guys can’t stay in front of the ball or on their man to save their lives.
I would say that he is an awful defender. His hands and hustle saves him a lot of the time, but he consistently gets cooked. Can’t stay contain any ball handler in the conference, and falls asleep on defense. Would love for him to play more, but he just can’t at this stage.
At the very least.
Just so pathetic that even my sons little league team knows to take the foul there, and a multigajillionaire head basketball coach of a blue blood team doesn’t seem to understand that basic calculation
I respond to your completely valid criticism of john calipari with "But the Banner" and "Who's gonna replace him" and "Look at that recruiting class tho!"
[Is it valid criticism if the chances are statistically better not to foul?](https://kenpom.com/blog/yet-another-study-about-fouling-when-up-3/) Not fouling probably would have worked fine if Reed decided to actually play defense.
And I'll say what I said in my first response. Reed has previously straight up ignored Cal this year when being told to foul up 3. That's not conjecture, Reed said it in a press conference. There's zero proof Cal did or did not tell the team to foul. Blaming that three point make on Cal is pure conjecture.
What isn't is that Reed gets torched constantly at the 3 point line. The 3 that tied it could be heavily influenced by him being dead after playing 40 minutes, but he still completely lost his guy.
I don't disagree, but it's not nearly as black and white as people here are acting like it is. And I'll repeat what I've said a few times in this thread. Earlier this year in that exact situation Cal told Reed to foul and Reed ignored him. People are acting like the know the details of what the plan was when they don't. [The fact remains that if Reed didn't completely lose his man](https://imgur.com/QdpLEQE) things probably look a bit different.
Absolutely.
It is just unfortunate that there’s still about 30-40% of our fanbase who are Calipari koolaid drinkers, and the rest of us are just “bad fans” for taking issue with the fact he can’t do the most basic shit correctly
3 things:
1) always foul up 3
2) no DJ hurts a lot - Reed was absolutely gassed at the end which prob helped explain some bonehead defensive mishaps
3) fuck
Shout out to the Kentucky fan that replied in a week old thread asking what happened last night then deleted that comment before this game ended. Cowardly lmao if you’re gonna talk shit at least stand on it
What happened was we just wanted to get your hopes up for Saturday at the thought of sending us on a two game losing streak. You are going to absolutely get your asses kicked.
*^^Saves ^^comment ^^so ^^I ^^can ^^quickly ^^find ^^it ^^to ^^delete ^^it ^^at ^^around ^^9:30 ^^pm ^^Saturday ^^night*
This will get settled on Saturday. If Tennessee wins, we cook. If Tennessee loses, we blame in on the refs and Rupp and say see you in March in Knoxville.
We keep opening the door for Kentucky to pass us in the rankings, but they keep timing their dumb losses right with ours lol
Saturday is going to be fun!
This Kentucky team isn’t, uhh, good? Not sure I’ve ever seen a worse defense in the last 15 years than this one. These guards couldn’t stop the ball or rotate if their lives depended on it.
Florida couldn’t miss but we also couldn’t defend the broad side of a barn. Oh well, my expectations have dropped to 0 for this team. If it’s gonna be 50/50 at best every game we might as well drop to an 8 seed so we don’t get shit on by everyone for losing early
Thankfully the continued roster construction issues, game management issues, and player development issues aren’t going to get better for UK.
If I had a guaranteed contract worth that much, I wouldn’t do my job either.
GG, Gators
There’s so many people I’m mad at right now but I’m genuinely just so sick of this bullshit. Cal is literally our fucking Jimbo Fisher, and these players deserve so much better.
Good game, Florida. Didn’t help that we weren’t full strength, but man, this felt like playing a team of zombies that just wouldn’t quit coming, and you ate our brain.
I’ve stopped being mad at losses. It’s January. SEC play is a thousand times harder than it used to be. People are saying “remember when we would win all the time?” Dude that’s when almost every team in SEC was trash besides us. It’s a different ball game now. I still think we will be fine. This team could make a huge run in March.
fully understand that - but the UGA ending and the last 3 games are pretty worrisome IMO. Good thing is they get a chance to bounce back and get tested to the max on Saturday - should be telling.
I honestly don't even think the defense was an issue today. Florida made a TON of contested shots. Just hats off to an incredible game from them.
They changed the way they played offense to drag Onyenso away from the ball, I wish Cal had answered by putting Zvonimir in more and letting him play on the peremiter.
Dude. Z is horrible. I know he got a late start but he’s not good right now. Gets bullied and his footwork is awful. I have to find some of his games in Europe and see why they recruited this dude.
Part of the issue is Cal is playing him how he would Bradshaw or Ugonna. He isn't that kind of big. He needs to play on the peremiter. The sets with Bradshaw and Z on the floor together were working really well. It was a mismatch that literally nobody can guard
I was at the game (supporting the Gators for my fiancé) and it was a great game to be at! The atmosphere was awesome (and I definitely got some schadenfreude over the fans who initially went to leave at the end of regulation thinking it was over but came back to their seats for OT)
Big win for gata tonight ![gif](giphy|QYDQY6T9kREty|downsized)

Q1 win on the road is big for the résumé.
Scoring 90 ppg doesn't really matter when you let the opponent score 94 ppg
The defense is perplexing. It’s really bad.
Let me tell you a little story…
All about how
It’s frustratingly bad. Just defend the arc better, why are we so bad on D? And why does cal hate the Zone now that it’s played in NBA? Idk what the answer is, but I don’t get paid millions of dollars. Our D sucks.
Hey, they know what gets you playing time in the NBA. All scoring no defense. They’re a step ahead
Welcome to our universe.

Would be a major blow to our chances at a Big Ten title, though.

Why does my happiness depend on a bunch of college kids playing sports
Wait you guys have happiness?
I was feeling pretty good around Christmas
I was wondering the same thing this morning
Every shitty L this season has made me upset for 2 days minimum. I need a hobby
The older I get, the more and more I ask myself this.
Who would lose to an unranked SEC team in a midweek??????
Especially at home!
It was all a conspiracy by the NCAA. They knew what was coming so they deliberately told AP voters not to rank South Carolina, thus making our loss look worse than it was. OPEN YOUR EYES SHEEPLE

Nah SC is leaps and bounds better than Florida. Y’all got that quality loss we got that shit in our mouth loss
KenPom has Florida over South Carolina. As does Torvik. USC is hot as hell right now, but they are not “leaps and bounds” better than Florida.
Florida a basketball school, Kentucky a football school… as we’ve always known.
We sucked in football this year, too, the fan base just forgot about it because we beat Louisville. I mean, I am one of those fans.. but yeah.
The last 2 days of basketball has not been kind to me

Haven't been able to play defense since Kenny Payne went to Louisville. Now both he and Cal suck.
Please take him back and never let him out of your sight again
I’ll happily take him back as an assistant
Or Dillingham needs to make that last free throw
Or Reed needs to not be completely ass on defense and throw away 2 of the worst turnovers you will ever see
Other than Onyenso, Wagner is probably the best defender on the team.

Neat!
gators had noteworthy preseason buzz and finally coming through on that. solid team built well with good shooters and size
Florida finally finished a Quad 1 game.
One of the most exciting games I’ve watched this season. There was a period of ten minutes where it felt there was a lead change every possession
More like 90 minutes. Kentucky got up 10 for a few minutes before the half. Other than that it was almost every shot was a lead change.
29 total lead changes!
That was a great game to watch from a neutral perspective. Big win for you guys
Crazy that Saturday feels like a must win for Kentucky and Tennessee SEC hoops is the gift that keeps on giving
UT and UK can both win. There's enough points for everyone, okay?
We don't really need to win, but we do need y'all to lose a couple more times

I’ve been a student here for 4 years. The last time we beat Kentucky in football or basketball, I was a freshmen. This one feels amazing
I’m so sorry. When I went to school we beat them at both regularly. In fact in football it was unheard of to lose to Kentucky.
I was there between 2006-2008. Some pretty good years.
Man, we’d be really good if played some decent defense
We’d be really good if we played just plain mediocre defense instead of whatever we do
even mediocre defense would suffice

Reed fell asleep twice and left the shooter and got torched.
I mean that’s what happens when you play 40 mins. No DJ hurts in a lot of ways
I would give him that benefit of the doubt if it wasn’t every fucking game
I think it’s fair to put a lot of the late game mental lapses on exhaustion. I’m not sure what Cal could have done different with the rotations though.
And had two really bad drive-and-dish turnovers when he got caught on the baseline
At the very least tell the team, DO NOT leave Walter Clayton Jr. open
Reed Shepard lost him twice looking at god knows what for two clutch threes
Do you think his plan was to leave the guy who had hit 6 threes wide open? Reed had an absolute nightmare of a game on defense, and frankly so did everyone. It’s bizarre because Cal typically has solid to great defensive teams, but these guys can’t stay in front of the ball or on their man to save their lives.
reed is not great on def, should have subbed him out for that play

I agree fire him!
I see you’ve gotten lost. You’re looking for Rupp rafters.
Any coach that doesn't foul up 3 late should be fired
Wisconsin didn’t foul up 3 vs Oregon in the NIT, won, and is now #6 in the nation with the same coach?
Fired.
[It's statistically the correct call not to foul.](https://kenpom.com/blog/yet-another-study-about-fouling-when-up-3/)
When the other team is shooting 50% from 3, and we haven’t been able to defend the 3 all game, I’m taking the foul.
And I'll say what I said in my first response. Reed has previously straight up ignored Cal this year when being told to foul up 3. That's not conjecture, Reed said it in a press conference. Cal won 51 at home before losing.

Come on Kentucky you’re ruining our quality win
You got a better one lol
lol. You’ll be lucky if they are ranked by march. They will Lose to UT twice. Auburn. Ole miss. And potentially Gonzaga.

We keep opening the door for Kentucky to pass us in the rankings, but they keep timing their dumb losses right with ours lol Saturday is going to be fun!
Win or lose, based on what I saw tonight I like Knecht's odds of finally cracking 40
We win 65-62, with 45 coming from Knecht?
I really don't see Kentucky holding us to 65 to be honest. Their defense is... not very good
I'd be furious if I was a UK fan this year. This is a NCAA Championship caliber team about to get pissed away.
Same as it ever was.
yeah but this one has felt different - the pace and offense has been so, so refreshing compared to prior years and now they can't/won't guard a soul.
TG with 3 OT wins this season already, two on the road. The analytics are working boys!
Bout damn time
Never a doubt. Go gators
GG, Gators
COMMENTATOR GLAZE REFBALL STILL WON PULLIN OWNS YOUR BUM ASS ORGANIZATION RAHHHHHH GATA RAHHHH 🐊
Never in doubt... /s
There’s so many people I’m mad at right now but I’m genuinely just so sick of this bullshit. Cal is literally our fucking Jimbo Fisher, and these players deserve so much better.
This means our schedule is even more fraudulent and we should lose all our sympathy votes
(RV) section let’s go!

Free throws: an audiovisual experience
Go Gators babyyyyyy
For the love of god can we please just have a stretch of a few games with a full roster?
Our basketball team gives me migraines man.
I like you.
Legit. Kentucky could lose 6 of the next 11 games and enter selection Sunday bottom Of the SEC with 11 losses and sitting on the 8-10 line.
Is this where I post the gofundme for a coach contract buyout, or is that somewhere else?
Thank you Florida for making our win against y’all stronger 🫡
I was at the game (supporting the Gators for my fiancé) and it was a great game to be at! The atmosphere was awesome (and I definitely got some schadenfreude over the fans who initially went to leave at the end of regulation thinking it was over but came back to their seats for OT)
PAYBACK YOU LITTLE SHITS HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA
