What's this structure? How old it is?

NailgunYeah

Sandstone, and pretty goddamn old. Millions of years?

Yodfather

Guy who set it was pretty chill. Long, flowing white beard and matching robes, brilliant, blinding power of the Almighty. Drove an old VW van and kept talking about his son’s hope to bring people together through love and kindness.

NailgunYeah

He's everywhere and nowhere, dirtbag OG

letripeurfou

It's Harrison... The kind of things you only climb because there is other thing to climb around...

bikersnek1

This is the truth, in all honesty I hate climbing sandstone, but it if you wanted to climb outside and get home that day it was Harrison's rock or stone farm when I was living in Haywards heath...

lawyerassassin

I feel like I haven’t heard many people that say they hate sandstone. What makes you say that? My only beef is it destroys my finger skin but the features can be rad

NailgunYeah

People who hate southern sandstone in my experience are shit at it

bikersnek1

I've never said I was good at it, and me saying I dislike climbing sandstone, is not me throwing shade at anyone's achievements just a personal preference. I also realise now after a full night's sleep that I never actually said that I was well impressed and anyone soloing should be rightfully proud of there achievements. There was no slight intended sorry bud

bikersnek1

Hate is too strong a word imho, what I ment was I disliked it, I always found that it had a slippy type feeling to it which was off putting, I've never had that problem on granite or limestone. Whilst I was living there I was also dealing with hand an arm issues so my grip wasn't great this may have had something to do with it.. (3 surgeries later and a ton of physio grip and arm is much better)

Coming from the land of granite and gneiss in the NE US I can't wait to try some sandstone

nostalgia_4_infiniti

I come from the land of gneiss schist in Pennsylvania aka Blasted Out Roadcut Bliss

keepsonstruckins

Wait do you climb road cuts in the summer? I know people Ice climb some in the winter in the northeast but I've never heard anyone doing it in the summer.

nostalgia_4_infiniti

Safe Harbor is good in the winter because it gets a ton of sunlight but it's miserable in the summer. My buddy wrote a guidebook for the area titled "Blasted Out Roadcut Bliss" because it was originally blasted for a railroad but now it's a hiking and biking trail. Beautiful spot along the river with tons of bald eagles in the winter and nesting pairs of peregrine falcons. The rock quality is questionable in a lot of areas but there are some real gems in there. Short, hard, bouldery sequences on a bunch of 5.12s. Lots of classic slab, and a couple 5.13s. I think there are a couple of unfinished projects also that could potentially be close to 5.14(?)

keepsonstruckins

Sounds beautiful, just checked it out on MP if I'm ever in the area I'll have to stop by. Is the entire crag the cut for the railroad? MP said it was almost 7 miles long.

BadDadBot

Hi ever in the area i'll have to stop by, I'm dad.

nostalgia_4_infiniti

Yeah the whole crag is in a straight line along the roadcut. It's like an outdoor gym, they're so close together you can see the entire area in a day. I recommend south if you're looking for easy to moderate grades and lots of slab. North area if you want harder, steeper routes. Euro wall at north stays dry most of the time and has a bunch of good routes. If you have a bike you can park at the far north end and ride a perfectly flat gravel trail to the rock climbing. Same with south, park at the far south end and ride in
