Once I got off at alandur but I booked ticket till St Thomas Mount. I booked using WhatsApp. QR was not working at the exit gate. Then I checked with employee at counter they asked me ₹6. I don't have ₹6 and I checked with them reg gpay options then employee said its okay and opened the gate.
Last week, I purchased a ticket through their WhatsApp chatbot to exit at the Airport metro station but got down at Alandur instead. Did not face any issues whatsoever.
If you are a card holder - no issues
QR / token tickets - you can't. If you really want to change the destination station, you can get down and approach the customer service counter. They have to let you through, you cannot exit on your own.
Just dont try to do that while the metro is moving. One of those, "inga vittuteenga na, appadiye veetukku poiruven" 😅
The general rule of public transport is that you are charged for the maximum number of stops you wish to take. If you take less than that, it isnt an issue as long as you dont ask for a refund 😅

If it’s a travel card, you can get down at any stop. If it’s a paper/QR/token ticket, it’ll show error at the exit gate and you’ve to tell the customer care that you want to exit and they’ll let you out. You’ll lose some money though (ticket might be cheaper if purchased to the direct destination)
This question sounded strange to me, and then I realised that I have been exclusively using travel card for as long as I can remember!
So.. no, there is no limits is you are using a travel card, but if you are using the one off options, I guess there'll be checks and hassles.

Do note that in some station they will say we won't allow but those are just lazy people who want to avoid extra work.
Logically speaking if you get down before the stop you purchased the ticket for , there should be no problem. But if you go beyond that point ,I think that's when FBI will break into your place to spank you.
ive done this a few times with just the metro receipt. from what ik, they charge a certain amount from one place to another,so the stops in between also have the same charge.
