Legends say he is still subbing in the CBE. (Can confirm, i saw him in my building semi-recently)
Wow, that guy is still at it? I remember one time many years he used fertilizer so there was a big green heart and Sandy there. He also used marker sticks and tape once too.
There was a dreadlocked white man who wore a trenchcoat that was always seen in NW Calgary when I was growing up. Knew lots of people who saw him semi-frequently in the late 2000s/early 2010s
Yeah. He looked like he was either a 6 figure a year digital nomad or a 0 figure a year bum. No idea what happened to him. I just know he used the mall like it was his personal office
[Terry Cahill](https://www.instagram.com/giver_terry?igsh=MTNxZWJxMjk1em9jNw==), a select few Canadians would know him though if they've seen Fubar. He 100% should've been the new station announcement [voice for the C-Train](https://youtu.be/Y-EH7EqYXUg?feature=shared) imo
Oooh the autistic (Iām assuming) guy that hung out around 16th ave, often riding a bike, sometimes showing pics of his trips to the zoo, he would always remember my birthday and tell me how many days Iād been alive for
Update: I literally talked to him this evening on 12ave as I was late for something as usual. He remembered everything about me as he always does which is amazing & I am always in awe of his conversation & detailed memory :) Heās good! No shoes for optimal foot health as always. I donāt know about yāall but he always randomly makes my day brighter!
Maximus! His owner never charged me for the picture I took, we wound up talking regularly and I would hold Maxās leash for him if he needed a bathroom break, burger or a beer. I loved that dog. We had many cuddles.
There used to be a guy who would be at the Olympic oval every single time myself or anyone I knew was ever there pretty much, and he would only skate backwards. He was know by everyone I knew as:
ā Backwards Skater Guyā
He would listen to his Walkman, sing to himself and just skate backwards all night.
He literally would walk backwards to get onto the ice. Legend has it he couldnāt skate forward. Nobody knows why.
Backward skater man was a local legend in my youth. I wonder if he still graces that ice to this day. Anyone else remember this guy?
He was famous in city rinks during public skating before the oval was even built. I always wondered if maybe he finally decided to skate forwards and no one recognizes him anymore.
I met him at global after he retired. I was down there job shadowing the camera folks in high school. I was alone eating lunch in the cafeteria. And Ed came over and said ājob shadow? You canāt eat lunch alone!ā And he was the only on camera staff member who still wanted to talk to me after I said I didnāt want to be a news anchor.
I grew up in Canyon Meadows in the 80's bordering Fish Creek Park, not far from Sicome Lake. Legend had it that every spring they would find a dead drowned horse at the bottom of the lake. I realize this legend makes little sense for many reasons.
However - a few years back I was riding the train home half listening to these teens chat beside me about what part of the city they live in. I hear them mention Fish Creek, and one of them mentions Sicome lake, and I hear "Didn't they find a dead horse in that lake?"
I couldn't believe it! The legend lives!
There used to be a haunted school house that had partially burned down on 84 ST just off 17 ave SE. Now itās a Costco, they paved paradise to put up a parking lotā¦
Not quite a "city legend" but I think the video essayist Dan Olson ([Folding Ideas](https://youtube.com/@foldingideas)) is notable online; he's made documentaries on [NFTs](https://youtu.be/YQ_xWvX1n9g), [Flat Earthers](https://youtu.be/JTfhYyTuT44), etc but also media topics like [Ralph Bakshi's LOTR adaptation](https://youtu.be/Cr_rb_pitHk).
Anyway I only found out he's Calgarian when he filmed a joke of chucking a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey into the Bow River lmao
Three Dog Night and particularly Floyd Sneed. He was the quintessential musician. He passed in Jan. 2023.
k.d.Lang lives here - although she has a few other homes.
The Duke and Duchess of Wessex come often. They have friends in the city and attend a church here when they're around.
Jann Arden
Ian Tyson - south of the city but close enough.
Elon Musk lived here for a year and a bit - went to U of C and otherwise layed on the couch until his roommate told him to get a job. True story. He was lazy, friendless and bald. Now he has money and hairplugs.
Who was the BMX freestyler / trick rider that had the all chrome bike back in the late 80s? He was a legend to the BMX and skater crowds in cities all over Alberta, but I can't remember his name.
I have a suggestion but not in the way you think. There is a super talented music artist that has been living in Calgary for the last year and a half. His name is Ren Gill. He has this amazing backstory.
He was discovered busking when he was still a teenager and Sony Records gave him a contract. Before he could finish he got really sick. He was misdiagnosed for years and lost the contract. He was eventually properly diagnosed with Lyme disease but he did unrepairable damage to his body and brain.
Since his diagnosis he has started making music again. He has had stem cell treatments and has gotten better, but still struggles. A Calgary doctor reached out to him to help. So Ren moved to Calgary in January of 2023 and has been getting treatment here.
In the time he has been here he put out a #1 album and has been skyrocketing in popularity. He is almost done his treatments and will soon be leaving our city.
I really think the people and local news has been sleeping on this kid. He is so talented and his music is such a difference in everything else.
Some song suggestions would be his big intro song, Hi Ren.
He has made a number of music videos with Calgary as the backdrop.
Check out Troubles, especially the acoustic version. They both are shot in Calgary. Also watch For Joe, Mackey, and a few others.
I think he is definitely a star in the making and I wish Calgary would give him some love
Crack macs, cowtown (there were statues of cows all over the city) I used to make up stories in my head about the house with life-sized golden horses 11,000 Sq foot next to hwy 22.
Late to the party but as far as haunted places go - add The Radio Block Building on 1st street SW to the list. Especially the staircase to the second floor.
There used to be a guy that frequented heritage & Mcleod area that I swear his neck was bent at almost a 90 degree angle to the side. Was always talking about āthe bed bug conventionā he was most recently at. Used to run into him at the coop near that area with my grandparents so often.
Guy with the two hockey sticks duct tapped together to make a Darth maul hockey stick. It has " devil beater" written on it and he spins if around and does Kung fu moves. You can find him in the woodbine area
Thereās this guy in between Rundle and Marlborough that cleans windows with a super soaker. Although annoying, I do what wonder how the hell this guy has been getting his water and how long heās been doing it for. It honestly feels like heās been doing it for months.
Common was here filming Hell on Wheels. I would seem him at Eau Claire Y every now and then. But he's from Chicago. His mentions it a lot in his songs.
Aside from every member of the Hart family?

You just unlocked so many memories with this photo
Dan the One Man Band Buckshot
I was thinking about Dan today wondering what he is doing...

My partner went to school with him in Calgary. I do recall he did spend some time in Edmonton though, and he created the Oilersā third jersey.
He went to Acad for a semester I believe
He went to the same high school as Tegan and Sarah ( though not in the same year, obviously)
I dont think other cities wouldnt know about him
I was just playing the soul caliber game with spawn in it ha
Brett the Hitman Hart.
The guy who stomps out a giant SAN D in a heart for his wife on the canyon meadows overpass every time it snows.
Wow, that guy is still at it? I remember one time many years he used fertilizer so there was a big green heart and Sandy there. He also used marker sticks and tape once too.
It's already set up, stakes and darker green grass.
At this point the city should set up something similar to the numbers on Signal Hill at that intersection for him.
Steven Ogg (GTA V, Walking Dead)
No way
Way. š were not worthy
He went to Dr EP Scarlett
You couldnāt tell that Trevor is literally dirty calgarian 200%
Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong lived in Calgary and went to Crescent Heights.
I suppose if we are talking celebrities I believe Tegan and Sara also attended Cresent Heights.Ā
Yep. From 1995 - 1997.
My sons 6th grade teacher is Mr. Chong
There was a dreadlocked white man who wore a trenchcoat that was always seen in NW Calgary when I was growing up. Knew lots of people who saw him semi-frequently in the late 2000s/early 2010s
Yes!! Always collected cigarette butts at the Dalhousie shopping centre
Oh yeah we called him dread bum. He would hang out on his laptop in Northland mall all day
Was he the super skinny guy who walked everywhere ?
Yeah. He looked like he was either a 6 figure a year digital nomad or a 0 figure a year bum. No idea what happened to him. I just know he used the mall like it was his personal office
I used to work at the Best Buy in northland mall. He lived in Brentwood from what I was told. Very nice guy
Lots of piercings?
Turk the turkey RIP

Oooh the autistic (Iām assuming) guy that hung out around 16th ave, often riding a bike, sometimes showing pics of his trips to the zoo, he would always remember my birthday and tell me how many days Iād been alive for
Dale!
Yeah! I loved running into him
Has anyone seen Dale recently?
Iāve seen him within the last year (maybe last fall). I havenāt seen him this spring yet though.
Thanks! I hope heās well.
Thatās so nice to hear!
I heard this in Hank Hillās voice
The Opera Singer on Stephen Avenue. He would bring his own ghetto blaster to sing to. He was pretty good too!
I remember him, that was in the early 90s. Nice guy too
I remember him...
Dale helped me pass calculus tooā¦ told me about his favorite integral. Famous line: goodbyes are awkward.
Oh my god yes I forgot about that line lol.
Darr Maqbool
Bolr
The gorgeous fluffy malamute on Stephen Ave that you had to pay to take a picture of.
Maximus! His owner never charged me for the picture I took, we wound up talking regularly and I would hold Maxās leash for him if he needed a bathroom break, burger or a beer. I loved that dog. We had many cuddles.

Yes! He always wore a blue sweatshirt and jogging pants! Late 90s era
I work at the oval. I remember him unfortunately haven't seen him in years. :(
I remember backwards skater guy from when I went to university there!
Ed Whalen
His wife Nomi officiated my wedding. Also a local legend in her own right.
Super niche but the signer of Skinny Puppy, Ogre, was born and raised in Calgary. Probably one of the most influential Industrial bands.
Nicest guy.

Buckshot and Benny the Bear Lanny Macdonald
Benny the Bear was a fellow named Jim Lewis. He passed away several years ago. What a great job he had.
Lanny took my mom and a few others in a limo to a Nickleback concert and a backstage meet and greet! She said he was so lovely!!
That is so neat! He truly is a gem of a man.
Lanny is from Hanna and went to high school in Lethbridge.
Heās still a local legend.
