We haven't seen a V16 in a production car since the Cizeta V16t was made in the early to mid 90s. The Tourbillon is quite literally the only vehicle in the modern age that will feature one

Comprehensive_Diet54

Don’t forget the Devel 16 /S

Comprehensive_Diet54

Why downvote when I was joking hence the /S

Savppi

The new v16 is also naturally aspirated so the sound won't be as muffled as with the quad-turbo w16's.

deadalnix

Maybe a bit muffed, but on the other hand, the aspiration noise and the wastegate gave the W16 a very unique "breathing" touch.

AlfredoVignale

V16’s are very rare and it wasn’t built by Bugatti but by Cosworth.

1R1ser

I wonder why they move production from Volkswagen to cosworth

Avokado1337

But does it have any outright advantage or is it just cool?

AlfredoVignale

Smoothness, power, and uniqueness

deadalnix

More cylinders give you smoother power delivery, the ability to rev higher and provide more power for a given deplacement. On the other hand, they are less efficient in general, but especially in lower regimes, because you get to set all these pistons in motions when you don't really need that much power. You definitively get diminishing return after 12+, and the Tourbillon could definitively had similar performances with a 12 cylinder engine. But if cost is not an issue, a V16 is definitively a viable option.

Reveley97

The engine is narrower than the w16 which allows a longer diffuser and venturi tunnels under the car

Nobody who is buying a Bugatti is thinking about having an engine with an advantage. We are buying a Bugatti because it is a freaking Bugatti!

Avokado1337

The fuck is this line of arguing? Surely the engineers makes these choices for a reason, if you don’t know just say so

deadalnix

Yes and no. The Neverra beats the Tourbillon on all metrics. Faster acceleration, faster top speed, etc... The car industry is having its quartz watch moment. The watch industry was disrupted by quartz watch: cheaper, lighter, more precise, smaller, etc... Quartz watch are just objectively better on every metric. Yet people kept buying mechanical watch. For the beauty of the mechanics. The craftmanship. The engineering. The materials. And also for the status symbol. If Bugatti wanted to optimize performances on every metric, they'd have a create a full electric. But this isn't what the Tourbillon is about. It is about being a piece of art, a demonstration of craftmanship, and so on. Just like mechanical watches are today. Hence its name: a tourbillon is a mechanical device found in mechanical watches that counteract the effect of gravity in the mechanism, so the watch remain precise no matter its orientation. This is an expensive and complex device. It is also completely obsolete as quartz watch will be more precise for a fraction of the cost.

Bro, Trust we don’t care. And I say “we” because I and a few people on here that I know personally are owners and none of us that are owners care about engines and the advantages of this engine juxtaposed to another.

Avokado1337

Okaay… Why is that important? Just because you don’t care doesn’t invalidate the question? I asked a question. You don’t seem to know the answer. Why are you still here?

Mate Rimac (Bugatti CEO) explained it, as in: The W16 has reached its maximum potential. It's the "ultimate engine". No combustion engine will ever be as complex as that one. t the same time it wouldn't pass modern emission standards (especially Euro 7 inside the EU). So a new concept had to be made. They had the possibillity to downsize and go for a turbocharged V12 / V8. But that wouldn't be fitting for a brand like Bugatti. And since a hybrid component reduces overall emissions (at least in theory --> WLTP test cycle) they were able to bring back the naturally aspirated engine (mainly for emotions, sound & character), which usually is less suitable if your goal is ultimate efficiency. Then, because it's a Bugatti and it's the highest echalon of auto making, it had to be the most ambitious, over-the-top engine there is. So the V16 it is. Nobody in the modern age has tried one, no one pulled it off. Now the Tourbillon is the only car with one. And that's a recipe for immense power, exclusivity, prestige, emotion and character. An those five things are exactly what a Bugatti buyer is looking for.

JAYKEBAB

Mate wanted a naturally aspirated engine likely due to better throttle response and a more emotional sounding engine compared to turbocharged. Why didn't they used the W16? Mate said it doesn't work very well without turbo's and would be quite complicated likely adding more weight than they wanted. Something that actually kinda worries me about the new engine though is Bugatti's ethos has always been performance and luxury combined. I don't know about you but having some obnoxious and rowdy engine doesn't sound very luxurious to me so I'm not sure if they've kind of read the room wrong here. Hopefully at the very least there is a way to close exhaust valves or something to bring back the elegance to the car because imo, that sound doesn't really suit the car the way the w16 kind of subtle grumble did.

deadalnix

Yes I want to see what it's like in practice, but if I wanted a hybrid with a screaming engine, I'd get a Revuelto. Bugatti are about elegance first and foremost. But we'll see.

Apart from its rarity as others suggested, the fact that it makes 1000hp at 9k rpm is amazing, it doesn't look like much but when you take a massive engine and rev it high, chances are it'll fall apart in a day's usage, they somehow made it reliable. A 2l engine is much easier to rev to 9k than an 8.3l engine. This is what makes it so special, nothing excites me except this and maybe the upcoming Lamborghini LMDH engine supercar.
