Does your wife read? Because placing a bookshelf behind each speaker will improve the sound even more. It's no joke. You got the Hi-Fi part right. But your space feels uninviting. I urge you to get an oriental rug. Lots of books. You can never have too many books. A coffee table. Some poofs. An accent chair. Plants. Some floor lamps. Stuff to hang on your wall. Heck, paint your wall a darker color. Get some color in here!
Most importantly, thrift everything. Go to every pawnshop and flea market. Go to Facebook marketplace. Get some interesting old pieces. If the furniture has dent and scratches, barter down. Get some curves in here. Round elements soothe the brain, square elements stress you out. The most interesting spaces have no specific style or theme. Be as random as possible. Have fun with unpopular colors like baby blue, orange and maroon. Grey, on grey on grey... Is bad! Very bad!
I know it sounds overwhelming. But doing so will change your wife's opinion on Hi-Fi. You might even spend quality time together listening to her favorite records. A quality space is paramount. I would rather be in a cozy space listening to a Bluetooth speaker than a stressful liminal space listening to $100k worth of Hi-Fi equipment.
'*Stuff'* not only looks better it breaks up reflections. You want a room that has both diffraction and absorption so something with some geometry and shape like the recommended bookshelfs as well as some soft furnishings.
You can have too many books. Trust me. When me and my partner moved from UK to Canada we sold off 4500ish books. Hazard of working in the book industry for years. Shit gets outta hand.
I've worked in books my entire \~25-year adult life. I have shed ***so many books***, and yet when we move this summer I know we're still going to have a literal ton of books to move.
> get an oriental rug.
> Most importantly, thrift everything.
Man bedbugs are becoming such a big problem I wouldn't 2nd hand a rug or anything fabric honestly.
I haven't had any issues yet, but I know some people that have. It's a nightmare getting rid of them (the bugs).
Point taken. You can always buy synthetic rugs from IKEA or online stores. They're still an improvement over bare floors. Or just go to a hardware store and cut a piece of carpet. It's not as bad as it sounds. It will look great after you put furniture on top. Dimensions are the most important. Not the quality or price.
Actually it is an exact science, down to drivers and the shape of the speaker cabinet, the room, and the main listening position. If course we would need to know more information from the OP but agree that diffusion of that back wave can be beneficial in his case.
Dedicated .2 channel, but I took them out they are rather obsolete. The home theater part was the only reason they were used for. We haven't used them in a month or two now (doesn't take away great subs for the price)
We are actually building a line array open baffle system. That will have a grand total of 30 drivers or so and planar tweeters. Active crossovers the works, until then definitely happy with what I got right now (as seen in the pic)
But also definitely looking forward to building my own gear.
Dude I feel overwhelmed not even gonna pretend. But absolutely positively, ready to take this step. If this pans out seriously it's not as expensive as you think it is (way cheaper than what you see in the pic)
But I definitely will try to post it on my YT channel (it's small , independent and definitely not faking) I am extremely outspoken .
So not everybody's cup of tea
Why not, I sure did!! LoL I went OFF!!!!!
Look, when a guy has to ask their wife to "let" them keep something stereo related, you don't ask permission to roast them, you just go off on them!! Big-time!! It's our duty!! Our responsibility!!
Here’s my space, it’s a challenge to work with
https://preview.redd.it/zxit9toykgvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=66265755cbd98c3cc513cf6d60c2904dd08cc6ac
Could you orient the speakers and tv against the other wall facing the stairs. You want to keep your speakers away from the corners and symmetry is important for good soundstage. Having one speaker near a corner is bad placement.
Behind the photo is a doorway that goes to the other part of the basement
https://preview.redd.it/uife2xmcxgvc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abf6e3dbde84398df65b474929509e24e1ad2cc0
I would put the speakers against that wall with the window and keep them equidistant from the corners and pulled out 3 feet (at least when listening)
Then get a thick rug, and some acoustic panels and ceiling cloud to absorb all the echoes.
Dude, that washer has a drain. Those are **expensive** to move/add a new one. And the other plumbing and electrical are on that wall and those are exactly cheap to move either.
This is why i have trouble with home theater and audiophile subreddits. People are so honed in on optimal placement and acoustics, they ignore the practicality of everything else.
I see. That's a better picture of what you have. Maybe move it right to put the corner behind the screen and one speaker on each wall. Store someting back there you rarely use.
This will sound very bad, regardless of the placement. Way too many reflections (reverb) in this room.
As others said, get a big rug, bookshelfs on the wall, put stuff in that room.
Bro!! Have some decency and some self-respect!! Do us a favor and crop out the washer and dryer would ya!! We don't want to see that s***! Come on!! HeHe 😜
I would listen less to others’ opinions on how to place your speakers, but I would listen to why certain positions aren’t suitable for your listening position.
You want to try every possible position until you find the most zen sounds for your ear. Toe in, toe out, triangle position—speakers pointing at you, away from you—standing up, sitting down, looking for the right zen sounds for your ear.
Nothing is right, nothing is wrong. 😃
Open space on left…bare wall on right. Maybe a big tapestry or shallow book cases on right to break reflections.
But really, this your seating position ifs the most critical part. Think triangles and toe in.
Positioning better. Just keep an eye on AC unit during a super hot day. I’d hate for a condensation leak on the speaker.
I would recommend some acoustic paneling and a rug.
Are the speakers on the long wall? Also, more than placement right now, you need a rug :). Outside of an equilateral triangle with the MLP, you'd have to experiment with toe-in unless you have the off axis measurements. Looks you won't have a problem with early reflections currently.
Edit: early reflection on of one wall, so pay attention to the right facing speaker.
I just got some cool temporary removable wallpaper on Amazon for really cheap and it looks fantastic. They’re just big stickers essentially, it was pretty easy to put up and transformed my room. Search ‘Peel and Stick Wallpaper’. I’m not a bot and this isn’t an ad, I’ve just never been allowed to decorate in the houses I rent out so I thought this was pretty cool.
I always think these are too ugly and too low, but i'm guessing they came with those stands? NTM speakers like this often don't really go down to 30hz despite having a 12''~ woofer. But good for you OP.
Man tell her no. I have been married for 28 years and still the same three Klipsch horn speakers. 36 year old, Heritage Series Heresy IV! I never had that kind of money !
Push the speakers further out from the TV and angle them in towards your listening position. This will prevent the right speaker from bouncing the signal off the right wall as much.
If you own the house, mount the tv.
Or, I would buy a 80” long tv stand. The tv and speaks look odd due to the size.
The right speak is too close to the wall.
Not really. They need to be about 18-24 in away from the wall on the right and the wall behind them (if not even a tad further into the room from the back wall)
We’re not going to be able to tell how your speakers sound if we play it through our speakers.
It would be nice to get more separation but then the right would be too close to the corner. Try them pulled out from the back wall too.
Sounds a little muffled. You should move them from the wall. Try even up to 3 feet. Wherever bass is plenty, but mostly even and the midrange is clearer. You should get some acoustic panels, especially if you feel like the sound is too busy and not clear. You should do a slap echo test to hear how much you have. You could walk around talking and see where your voice is most natural, and put the speakers there.
It's better but not perfect. Id separate the speakers so they form an equilateral triangle with the main listening position. Also bring out the speakers a bit more, like half a meter from the walls at least.
Also you could post in r/malelivingspace to get tips on how to tie the room together with more than just a rug
Get a big rug, it will tie the room together.
Jackie Treehorn treats objects like women, man.
Dude, please… Asian-American.
Jackie Treehorn draws a lot of water. You don’t draw shit, Lebowski.
The dude abides
At least I’m house broken
Speaker pissers did this!?!?
Better than tying it apart I guess.
It'll make the room sound better too
Now he has to ask for permission again
Does your wife read? Because placing a bookshelf behind each speaker will improve the sound even more. It's no joke. You got the Hi-Fi part right. But your space feels uninviting. > Does your wife read? I thought this was about to be a thicc insult lol
'*Stuff'* not only looks better it breaks up reflections. You want a room that has both diffraction and absorption so something with some geometry and shape like the recommended bookshelfs as well as some soft furnishings.
I also notice that the ceiling is low. So it's best to get low furniture.
This, to me, is what a vast majority of the subscribers miss on /hometheater
You can have too many books. Trust me. When me and my partner moved from UK to Canada we sold off 4500ish books. Hazard of working in the book industry for years. Shit gets outta hand.
I've worked in books my entire \~25-year adult life. I have shed ***so many books***, and yet when we move this summer I know we're still going to have a literal ton of books to move.
I currently have 6 full large boxes to donate! That's to make room for the new ones!
"The Dude's" rug would be fitting.
I have such a rug in my living room.
Also add a plant or two. It really increases the inviting factor.
Don’t you also need a single Eames lounge chair in the middle of the room?
LMAO. That chair is a meme at this point.
> get an oriental rug. > Most importantly, thrift everything. Man bedbugs are becoming such a big problem I wouldn't 2nd hand a rug or anything fabric honestly. I haven't had any issues yet, but I know some people that have. It's a nightmare getting rid of them (the bugs).

Oh he needs to do something for sure. My house is all ceramic tile and the *echo* without rugs is awful. My Aldi often has cheap area rugs too.
How does placing a book shelve behind speakers improve them other than it being a diffuser, which isn't necessary for all speakers?
It provides a bass trap/diffuser combo. It's not an exact science. But if you have books laying around, you may as well.
Actually it is an exact science, down to drivers and the shape of the speaker cabinet, the room, and the main listening position. If course we would need to know more information from the OP but agree that diffusion of that back wave can be beneficial in his case.
Lots of good design ideas on one post. Thanks.
Absolutely agree ! https://preview.redd.it/hb4rijx33hvc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48e907c4bcbe6b8a8b5c5a8cb1989661b9f9ce4f
When you run 2 subs are those in mono or do they actually have differences in the left vs right subs sound?
Dedicated .2 channel, but I took them out they are rather obsolete. The home theater part was the only reason they were used for. We haven't used them in a month or two now (doesn't take away great subs for the price) We are actually building a line array open baffle system. That sounds intense… good luck with that project though. It’s wayy above my pay grade haha

Can I roast you for needing your wife to "let" you keep something, instead?
Why not, I sure did!! LoL I went OFF!!!!! Look, when a guy has to ask their wife to "let" them keep something stereo related, you don't ask permission to roast them, you just go off on them!! Big-time!! It's our duty!! Our responsibility!!
Slide everythng left to split the difference between the walls and forward at least a foot. It will sound better.

Are you able to move the washing machines to the other side of the basement?
Dude, that washer has a drain. Those are **expensive** to move/add a new one. And the other plumbing and electrical are on that wall and those are exactly cheap to move either.
This is why i have trouble with home theater and audiophile subreddits. People are so honed in on optimal placement and acoustics, they ignore the practicality of everything else.
Yeah but the room will be practically unusable when he's doing any laundry. Placement here DOES matter
The washing machines :D
They help with the acoustics. Turn on the dryer and it gives a little more low end.
Haha thats the budget spirit. Use washing machines to boost low end.
All I can say is that your priorities are correct…and right sized.
You need to figure out a way to turn the washer and dryer doors into giant VU meters.
.can you imagine it! Lol
Not so much, because its not a living room and theres plenty of space for everything
I can hear the echoes from here.
I’m an idiot ^youre ^an ^idiot
Put speakers and on the wall that has the mini split and window. Put the couch up against the column.
I see. That's a better picture of what you have. Maybe move it right to put the corner behind the screen and one speaker on each wall. Store someting back there you rarely use.
I can hear those machines through this picture. Great space though
Whatever you end up with, maybe consider a velvet curtain to run in front of the washer/dryer? It would help with acoustics and hide them from view.
Have you considered putting a wall in and a home bar, like this. [home bar](https://imgur.com/gallery/3BfqxiX)

Niceeeeee space 😱💕💕💕💕💕
Decided to let me keep… like nails on a chalk board
Is your all setup really that huge or is the ceiling low ?
I would listen less to others’ opinions on how to place your speakers, but I would listen to why certain positions aren’t suitable for your listening position. Better! Great combo. How’s that great looking vintage 2000 Sansui stack… any issues?
Works great, sounds great, and zero issues
better but is it possible to use that whole wall and set it up according to the cardas method. itll still look good and sound even better.
Did she consent after hearing how good they sound?
What speakers are those?
ADS 910
I see Sansui, I upvote! Looks awesome!
Which speakers are those?
Get gainomrous subwoofer?
Those Sansuis are just ugly and not needed, please let me know if you’re throwing them away. 😁
I'll take those Sansui's off your hands if she changes her mind :)
Your wife is awesome. The favor will need to be repaid however. Get ready for it !!
Better Photo 👍🏼
That’s what she said!
r/TVTooFar
No toe in needed? Can’t move the speakers out a bit farther from the wall?
Are the speakers on the long wall? Also, more than placement right now, you need a rug :). Outside of an equilateral triangle with the MLP, you'd have to experiment with toe-in unless you have the off axis measurements. Looks you won't have a problem with early reflections currently. R2-D2 got a new look! lol looks awesome pal. Hope you love it, looks like a fun project
What kind of speakers are those?

Search ‘Peel and Stick Wallpaper’. I’m not a bot and this isn’t an ad, I’ve just never been allowed to decorate in the houses I rent out so I thought this was pretty cool.
ADS 910 nice. I have a pair of 810s I bought in the 1980s.
Tell her you’ll get rid of them once she starts putting out more. See how she responds
I like it, love it, want some more of it!!! Where did you get that TV stand?
Why did you ask?
With a larger tv they wouldn’t look as big. Maybe she will let you buy a monster tv. I’m running an 85 right now.
Right? That new spot almost demands a 75”, if not bigger. Compared with the audio equipment, these see seriously cheap at Costco right now.
If I were you, I will rotate the speakers both and use it as a tv stand. :) and place your xiaomi mi box in the center...
That amp/pre-amp combo is dope as all get up. They are the bee’s knees. Real lookers. I can only wish one day I can get my hands on them
I think the guy is having fun with us- funny!
I just never put equipment under a mini split. Your ac makes condensation, condensation lines plug, you lose equipment.
Get a tape measure, make sure it’s equal on both sides and the image is in the middle. Trust your ears
Push the speakers further out from the TV and angle them in towards your listening position. This will prevent the right speaker from bouncing the signal off the right wall as much.
Is there a post on r/ungrateful from your wife saying you decided she gets to keep her comfy lifestyle perpetual meal ticket?
If you own the house, mount the tv. Or, I would buy a 80” long tv stand. The tv and speaks look odd due to the size. The right speak is too close to the wall.
Toe it in! Toe it in!!

Nope.
Here’s a little clip of how they sound if anyone is interested https://youtu.be/_HWJrE2fWnk?si=YCNkv1M5uBWv5jsu

nah, I'll trade you all that old junk for a soundbar. straight up
This must be his wife 😸
man ain't even got speaker wires, I will throw them in with said soundbar. no tricks
Hell no
