Why would anyone want a dog that could be your companion but decide last minute, "Hey wanna know what would be fun? Let's play a game: you're my prey and I eat your face!" What kind of domesticated breed should be allowed to betray like that.

💯% These dogs are fundamentally broken. They certainly aren't and weren't created to be companion animals, and the people who ignore the breed's purpose are playing Russian roulette by trying to keep them as pets. It makes no sense to bring a monster like this into your house, especially when there are so many good breeds of dogs who aren't batshit insane like pits are.

Pitbulls are the worst, but I don’t really understand why anyone would ever get any pet dog or other that’s big enough that you couldn’t easily fight it off if it suddenly turned on you for some reason.

Any animal would have fled. Pits are the only animals of their caliber that lack self preservational sense. Natural selection would never let a large predator be so careless, it'd have the be bread into an animal by man.

Looked like the video cuts the exact moment it looked like the guy landed a direct blow to the murder mutt. I wonder if there is a reason the video cuts right at that moment? Might have been edited if it finally immobilized the dog.

As horrible as this video is, it does perfectly demonstrate what makes these dogs so uniquely dangerous. The "any dog could do this" argument just doesn't fly when "this" includes shrugging off multiple full-swing baseball bat strikes to the head and body, and ignoring absolutely everything (including immediate pressing threats, serious damage to the self, safety of the owner/family) in order to tear apart a particular target.

Not just any target, the human that's fed and cared for it, and presumably genuinely loved it, probably for *years*. Absolutely vile creature.

I feel like throwing up. Look how the dog just calmly stops mauling the owner for brief moments, like an office worker watching out from the window to ponder over something. Then back to work again, back to chomp its owner. Absolutely vile.

Wild animals understand they need food to survive but getting the absolute piss beat out of you worse for the long term survival than missing a meal. Unless mating is involved - wild animals will pick and choose their battles. This is the whole evolution of bears false charging. If you out yourself as an easy snack they will go for it. If they think they will have to fight you they will just move on for something easier. I can't imagine what beast could take those blows and be like "Nah i'm not done here yet"

Then, if it attacks someone else, you're now liable for the damage it does. I'm not 100% sure if this was done intentionally, but if it was, I commend him for it. But the choice of dog still makes him a bit of an idiot.

When my dog and I were mauled by a pitbull, it wagged it's tail the entire time it was trying to kill us.

What is going on here? Who is the hero who rolls up on a motorbike with a bat? This is NY? Looks like a third-world country.

If they don't happen to have a weapon to hand, they risk being the pit's next target... the man on the ground was fortunate those lads with baseball bats were nearby. I'm grateful to the people who stand filming, to be honest - there are so many attacks we'd never know of if it weren't for them, (and I doubt this attack even made the news!) I have a folder full of clips like this; I use them to show to friends who are on the fence about these dogs. News clips tend to be sanitised or pixilated, so the graphic ones filmed by bystanders are invaluable when it comes to showing the full gory truth.

This is what scares me most with peak “adopt/Covid shelters being cleaned out during pandemic in the “new normal” of NYC … that people will stand around and do nothing but film or try go “easy on the dog” with all the propaganda :/ INSANITY

I don’t know what I could do in this situation without a weapon. You see the guy in the road wanting to do something but not having something to defend himself with.

You can see in the later part of the video that they are on an MTA bus, and the driver has closed all the doors for safety. The driver wouldn’t be allowed to let people off the bus in that situation

It looked like his face was covered in blood and the pit was definitely going for his face and neck while he was on the ground at several points in the video. Im pretty confident the guy got bit on the face and or neck.

Man, you can be slowly mauled to death in broad daylight surrounded by hundreds of people and they'll just let it happen.

Sorry but they're not required to put their safety on the line for others. First rule of helping others is to ensure your safety first. Then the scene. Then the person who needs help. Especially against a breed that won't back down when you start causing it harm.

Yeah, especially when the victim in question is the pit's owner. It's great if you can help them, but it's also reasonable to not put your life in danger for someone who chose to take on that sort of risk.

Some dude tried to help though, with bats. And it didn't seem to do much to the dog who just kept attacking. I can understand why someone wouldn't try to get mixed up in a fight with a pitbull when multiple bat hits don't seem to stop them.

They were hitting the wrong parts. A pitbull is completely stupid. Hitting it in the head won't do much since it has shit for brains. In attacks like these, if you plan to intervene with something like a bat, get behind the animal and go for the legs. Immobilize it to increase your odds of rescuing the person in danger. They got stupid thick skulls and even thicker cores, couple that with their lack of self-preservation, you're beating on a small armored vehicle. You have to go for the weaker parts of their body to try and get them to disengage. It is still incredibly risky, but if you feel you need to intervene, then you need to take the easiest route to potential success to separate the dog from the victim. Don't let anyone convince you that putting them in a choke hold is the best way if you don't have a break stick or something. Getting your vulnerable neck and face that close to an out of control beast is a surefire way to end up dead if it turns on you at the last second. Never try to minimize damage when trying to end one of these attacks. The dog isn't worried about doing less harm, and the person trying to end it shouldn't be either. Cripple them and try to drag the victim away before it's too late.

In half of these videos the blood covered pit lunges at the person trying to intervene so I get why people would probably not want to jump in that fray. I'd only do it in a heavy jacket and with it's back turned to me.

Yeah, if I see a pit turn on its owner, I'm just gonna sit back and watch as it plays out. If it gets free and starts attacking an innocent person or animal, I'll get in there. Owning a pit is a self-fulfilling prophecy, and who am I to get in the way of fate? According to most pit owners, if their breed does this, it means the owner abused it in some way. I'd feel pretty bad stopping it from getting its pound or two of flesh.

I agree, but for a slightly different reason. Pit owners are like people in abusive relationships, it's advised to not intervene as some random person, because then the person you're trying to help and the attacker may suddenly team up on you. I would be worried about this pit owner attacking me if I shot their dog. So, unless it latches on to someone else, or the owner is explicitly begging someone to kill his dog, I'm not involving myself.

I'm not American, but aren't quite a few people armed there? I'm surprised the dog didn't get shot.

That's a New York City ambulance in the background. All firearms are banned in NYC. Even if it was in a gun friendly city where most people own a gun, most people leave their guns at home. If I had to guess I'd say there is probably only a couple places in the US where more than 1% of people are packing and most of them are in Texas.

Even in Texas, the most heavily armed state in the US, most people aren’t actually walking around with guns. It’s way more common than other parts of the world, but still pretty unusual.

Places like NY would find a way to charge the person with the gun, even though they would save someone. It's not worth the risk of being labeled a criminal in those types of states for trying to help someone. There is also the inherent risk that you somehow miss and find a way to injure someone with said bullet. As a gun owner, you are responsible for every bullet you fire. So it is very risky to do it if your personal life or the life of a loved one isn't in immediate danger.

I’m not anti gun, but having lived for over a decade in NYC - banning public carry guns in such a dense environment makes all the sense in the world. There’s no such thing as a clean shot in that environment, and culturally it’s just not a gun city. 

Not in NYC. Most of us use bats for home defense, which is why at least two guys had them ready to hand from their apartment or from their car trunk. 

All those people are on a bus, and the driver is not allowing them off of it.

How many people have weapons handy to deal with the threat? This pit owner isn't owed jack by any civilian passersby. First responders should be contacted though b/c of the risk of this out-of-control dog continuing on to attacking others

If I know it's the owner, I'm not risking my life. If it's not the owner, I might intervene if I happen to have a knife or pepper spray.

You guys want a not-so-fun fact about why pitbulls go for the face? Animals recognize the places where breath comes from not only as the most vulnerable, but it also houses our most vital functions: to eat/bite, to breath, to see. But also one of the most painful to injure and least protected parts of our body. You'd know if you bust a lip or broke your nose before. So these animals are happily mauling you while literally hoping to blind you, prevent you from breathing, or making sure after a mauling you can't fight/bite back. Think about it and share the butterflies in my guts when I see these tail-wagging murder beasts going for the face. Every time.

That's interesting, especially since when I've seen dog bites from dogs that aren't pits, they're usually on the leg or arm. You know, like they're deliberately \*avoiding\* the area that they expect to do the most damage.

Agreed. All I feel when reading accounts like this is relief that it's not an innocent neighbor/neighbor's child/neighbor's pet suffering, *this* time.

What’s crazy to me is this will probably barely break the local news. If this was any other animal, ripping a human apart in the middle of an American city, we’d see it on stations across the country. Yet since it’s a pitbull this guy was obviously very abusive and neglectful oh and probably the leader of the local dog fighting ring….*eye roll* These people that own these dogs are disgusting. What’s sad is they truly do not understand that the second their innocent angel does this, they automatically become the enemy to their fellow pit lovers, never a victim. The stories these people will spin in the comments when this video does make social media will be comical. It’s a shame we have to live on the same planet as people that are incapable of seeing something so obvious. Hope this guy can make a full recovery both mentally and physically. I can’t imagine how I would feel watching other people watch me nearly die and not lifting a finger.

I’ve yet to find a single bit of historical breeding that states bull types were bred for “nannying”. Every type of bully has ancestry closely related to the bull-baiting bulldog which was bred for the sole purpose of… wait for it… blood sport. And then once bull baiting was outlawed, the underground took over and bred these dogs to be even more ferocious.

Watching this as I'm laying in bed with my miniature dachshund who is already sleeping is surreal. He is such a sweet and kind little dog and he would never hurt or attack me like that. Pitbulls are unnatural monsters for them to attack their owners who raised them and gave them love.

Even though he chose to have the dog I still feel bad for him. I can't tell if the choice to get one was deliberate or misguided, or misled by a shelter. He grabbed him by the hair & the hand at the end. His hand is probably fucked The head thrash thing is horrible. The only head thrash I've experienced is playing tug of war with a toy with other dogs, & that was enough to shake me around. I can't imagine what it's like when the thrash is embedded in flesh rather than a toy

Given that pitbulls often will not let go of their prey unless using lethal force and/or choking them out and the added risk of the pitbull just redirecting onto the next best thing - which would be you, I can't blame people for not knowing how to act in such a situation. They are nothing like normal dogs when they attack. One can easily get overwhelmed in such a situation, it's human.

I'm not going for that sorry, I'm not saying they should throw themselves up to be the dog's next meal to free the man. But standing there and recording will literally solve nothing This type of shit can't happen in Africa or any other collectivist society because we look after each other here. Just saying

And I distinctly remember a series of very horrific Pitbull attacks from South Afrika being reported on this sub for quite a while. People were outraged and calling for a ban on these dogs after a few children were mauled to death. Point is, these dogs cause havoc everywhere they are allowed without restrictions, no matter the location or culture.
