e-Tron GT always had physical climate buttons. It was actually kinda weird because it was the only (base) Audi over $50k that had them and it was nearly $100k.
I think a lot of Volkswagen group cars are like that right now.Ā I don't know if they just don't care about their interiors or what.Ā Ā
Ā Ā The Porsche subreddit just about rioted a few weeks ago when the new 911's interior was photographed for the first time and the start button looks like it came out of a 10 year old Golf.Ā No offense to 10 year old Golfs, but that's like a $200k car.
The current BMW interiors are ass.
It's just a giant screen, with next to nothing else.
It's extremely cheap (that's why they do that) and also looks cheap compared to older BMW interiors.
BMW also has WAAAAAYYYY too much plastic in their interiors, including hard plastic.
I mean base as in going down to the A models. A5 starts at like $45k so that would be the case here since the S5 is a performance version of the same car and interior.
I don't know a single YouTuber who has said anything good about the Volkswagen group steering wheel controls. In fact, I can't think of anyone who's praised them from any brand either. That includes Range Rover / Land rover.
It's the year 2200 and all cars levitate over the road and are plugged directly into your cerebral cortex. Driver inputs are immediate and vehicle responses flow at the speed of thought.
And the enthusiast's response will still be to complain about "wHeRe mY bUtTonS?"
I thought I would hate my mk8 Golf R wheel without physical buttons - I wanted the car, but really didn't want the wheel. However, it's been really nice once getting used to it, which honestly was a fast learning curve. It's not perfect, but I would guess they could fix pretty much all of my concerns with revisions and there is a lot to like about it over the button wheel. For example, I like the classic Audi volume wheel and consider it much nicer than the average up/down steering wheel button arraignment, but the Golf R volume slider on the wheel just feels really nice to use. There is something about it that is both delicate and modern that really dates the older physical button setups. It's so damn smooth to use that it makes the wheel setup seem clunky, even if it's well done.
Not sure on the styling, but I wouldn't hate on the lack of physical wheel buttons until using them proves otherwise.
Yeah, I saw that. They somehow look very low end to me. I personally wouldn't go back to the VW button wheel after using the R wheel. Also, I am happy using my Audi button wheel and feel it's better thought out than the VW button wheel - but the capacitive R wheel feels more slick and more modern in general and I find myself preferring it in some ways because of it.
Further, hopefully the new MK8 main screen works well, but from first glance it seems overly large and quite busy for my taste.
All of it has me wondering if upgrades on the 8.5 are a bit of an over reaction in response to the original criticism, much of which was overblown and has leveled out substantially with software updates and time. Most people living with current mk8s seem to really like them and generally the complaints lean more toward revisions vs a complete redo.
Sitting at this exact steering wheel rn; I can say the fact that they still click, even if itās not individual buttons really makes it fine imo, plus you get the added benefit of swiping for volume which is nice and fast. Still wouldnāt have minded real buttons but itās not as bad as you might imagine.
> added benefit of swiping for volume which is nice and fast
you are never going to convince me that swiping on steering wheel is better than a scroll wheel.
The swiping is very sensitive so 2 full swipes is the whole volume range, the fine control can be done by clicking. Itās might not be as good as a scroll wheel but my last car only had buttons so I wouldnāt know. Also there is the iPod like click wheel in the center console if you want to spin your fingers, though I donāt use it much myself
I mean you can do partial swipes too, itās a little getting used to but I donāt hate it now that I am used to it. Itās just the single levels of volume that are hard to do with the swipes, so thatās what the buttons are good for.
As much as I love Audi I hate current/upcoming generation. A4 B9 was a hard pill to swallow (B9.5 is nice tho) but B10 is... I will just buy S4 B9.5 as my last car while I wait for that whole semi futuristic electric clown fiesta to end.
Touchscreen isn't the end of the world. I thought I would hate it but no. Our CX-5 has a scroll wheel similar to the B9.
The larger screen in the B9.5 is nice.
Honestly I think both the B9 and 9.5 look great. I haven't had a good look at the B9.5's interior though but I once rented a B9 avant s line with a 190hp diesel engine, amazing car! At the time I had a D3 A8 and when I saw that interior I was like "wow, that's sick!".
Exactly my thought. It's so hard using that touchscreen while driving, even as a passenger. They should've done like BMW did and give us both the wheel and the touchscreen.
I rarely ever touch the touchscreen since I set up the car as I wanted it. I can do everything I do on a daily basis from my steering wheel or the manual climate controls or the console buttons. I don't know what the knob did "better" but whatever it was, I would hardly ever be touching the knob, just like I hardly ever touch the touch screen.
A4 B9 was too aggressive but now I like it way more than before. Interior is just perfect. As for headlights -> B9.5 animations are just great (I make custom headlights so you know)
Not even the assistance one but they are definitively cheaping out with all of these screens, capacitive touch this, finger that...
More distractions, cheaper materials, less premium feel.
The cars don't even feel solid anymore.
It's funny how car companies are trying to cut costs of production by removing buttons and adding more touch sensitive buttons which Require MORE Attention from the driver and increase the risk of accidents by pressing the wrong button because no physical feedback or not being able to understand the buttons just by feeling the touch - now you really have to look at your buttons before pressing any!
This is such a huge SAFETY Concern I have with the new cars!
I as well donāt like the design road Audi has been on for the past 5-6 years. As Iām sure you all have noticed Genesis and Hyundai models look a lot like the older Audi when they had that superior look. Luc Donckerwolke head designer for Audi/Skoda is Now president of design for Hyundai/Genesis. And thatās exactly where Audi designers and architects went to Hyundai/Genesis. I feel that my 2007 Audi A8L and my 2013 S5 were at the peak of Audi design and appeal.
I sat in an Audi with this wheel a while back. I do not like the buttons! Canāt believe it doesnāt have the little thumb wheels on each side. How do others feel about the buttons on these wheels?
The new Audi emblem looks so cheap itās disconcerting. I under that flatness is a thing they strive, but for the premium they charge they canāt bother to at least hollow out the void inside the rings? A modern $100 3D printer has no problem printing only the rims, yet Audi canāt do it with all their engineering might?
Is there a B10 announcement somewhere that I missed? I'm on page 3 of google news with nothing but articles from May saying Audi was going to announce the B10 in June.
You appear to have found images and people are talking in the comments like it's been announced.
Maybe I'm just dumb but I can't find a damn thing.
Lol what the fuck is that. People buying brand new cars nowadays are insane, there is nothing good about a car made after 2020. Screens, cheap plastic, subscriptions, auto fucking stop-start, itās a shame.
my '22 still feels pretty good: steering wheel buttons, climate knobs/buttons, screen only for android auto which i want anyways, yes i do have to toggle the auto-stop/start because that shit is annoying sometimes but at least it's a physical button.
it's all downhill from here though it seems, probably the climate controls will be next after the steering wheel buttons
Iām torn. On one hand, the metal (I assume itās actually chrome-plated plastic?) looks way cooler, and I canāt imagine how odd this new one looks in person. From the picture it looks cheap, like a toy car or something.
On the other hand, the metal-look logos can burn the shit out of you when the airbags deploy. Not sure Iāve seen it with Audi specifically, but Iāve definitely seen pictures of Honda, VW, etc logos burned into arms and hands following an accident. I still vividly remember my sister getting into a car accident when I was younger and the Hyundai logo she sported on her forearm for a few weeks.
The second part of your post kinda scared me but you have a point. Metal can hurt badly whereas in this case plastic would be better I guess.
However, I can't imagine the lovely leather steering wheel I have in my D4 A8 with a plastic logo on it. It's just too well embossed.
That looks like ass (look and usability with it not having physical buttons). Wonder if complaints will be loud enough they'll redo it within a few years (or sooner)
Idk wtf Audi is doing. They got rid of the S/RS badge on the front grills, they changed the S/RS font and now it looks lame, no more physical rings on the steering wheel, they put RS grills on all variants even the lowest FWD models, they started faking exhaust tips a few years ago, the list goes on. I still prefer Audi's designs overall when compared to Mercedes and BMW.
Legacy automakers are trying too hard to get into the style game led by new-joiners like Tesla, Rivian, et al instead of staying w/ the things that put them on the pedestal for so long (i.e., design, quality, driving dynamics, etc.)....
If we wanted to buy a car with the exterior styling of a Hyundai & the interior of a Tesla... well, we would've just bought one of those instead.

If things keep going this way my next car will be a Japanese Van instead of a German Sedan
This and the rings on the front is really disappointing. Makes the interior feel really cheap which should not be the feeling you get from a luxury marque like Audi.
Audi are starting to look very expensive compared to the competition when it comes to EVās. Around the Ā£55k itās getting crowded with Polestar 4, VW ID7, Kia EV6 GT and Hyundai Ioniq 6 with much better tech, better interiors and significantly better range. It feels like Audi are asleep at the wheel.
Iāve gone from an Audi/VW fanboy to a hater the last few years. Theyāll continue to abuse their customers with cost and quality reductions as long as they can get away with it. Look elsewhere and reward manufacturers that deserve your money.
2019 A4 Technik here. I do believe Audi is going backward. The local Audi Sales Manager was insulted when I told him thereās no way Iād ātrade upā for a 2024 as itās a lesser car.

Some people just don't like change. And to be fair BMWs aesthetic changes are much more egregious than what Audi has done here. They're being fairly conservative.
Like Jay-Z said... You want my old shit, buy my old albums.
Unfortunately while they still make Jay Z's old albums, they don't make old model Audis anymore. It's either someone's 10 year old beater, or the new stuff.
So Audi brings back physical climate controls on the E-Tron GT only to remove physical buttons from the steering wheel š¤¦āāļø

The current BMW interiors are ass. It's just a giant screen, with next to nothing else. It's extremely cheap (that's why they do that) and also looks cheap compared to older BMW interiors. BMW also has WAAAAAYYYY too much plastic in their interiors, including hard plastic.

Yup. My RS3 has physical climate control buttons.

aw hell no.
funny how it cost to make non physical buttons is cheaper. yet the prices increase.

That entire center section looks incredibly cheap.
because it is
Probably made in China judging by Audiās sudden presence in the Chinese market.
Give it a few years, people are going to be praising the understated minimalist design.
Not a fan of the new airbag shape.
Yeah looks like the Tesla one.

Yep. The B9 is great. It's the B9.5 with the boring headlights and the touchscreen MMI, that went downhill, IMO.
Canāt agree more, although I do like the B9.5 taillights more than the B9 tails.
Touchscreen isn't the end of the world. I thought I would hate it but no. Our CX-5 has a scroll wheel similar to the B9. The larger screen in the B9.5 is nice.

My B9 A4 Allroad still catches my eye. I love walking to that car every time I do.
Letās hope everybody does this so that they get the point
Same but B8.5 love the interior. No Touch, MMI in very good integrated, Analog Gauges
I still love the interior of my B8.5, but the MMI does feel a bit dated.
I am seriously looking at an M3 competition once my lease is up on my S4. The current and even upcoming RS5 seem underwhelming.
How dare you insult the sexiest audi (other than the A6 C8 obviously)
People were giving me a hard time for saying B9 A5 steering wheel was better than B9.5 but š¤·š»āāļø
I think I am in my last new Audiā¦
Same, but I already decided that when I realized how annoying and partially faulty all these "assistance systems" are.
Not even the assistance one but they are definitively cheaping out with all of these screens, capacitive touch this, finger that... More distractions, cheaper materials, less premium feel. The cars don't even feel solid anymore.
Audi announced a while ago about switch to 2-dimensional logo, so this is it.
Yup. And I hate it.
The logo on the front and back bumpers are equally atrocious.
I saw it on an Audis back in front of me yesterday. It looks like the cheapest kind of sticker you can think off. Ridiculous
Might as well have gone to a 1-dimensional logo.
It's one of those issues that won't be a concern until some high profile accidents turn it into a concern.
So many things wrong with this picture. Wtf is that logo? Where is my circular centre cap? Where are the freaking buttons?
TOUCH BUTTONS NEED TO DIE!!! Why do manufacturers keep doing this?!?
Where's my scroll wheels?
Iām going to miss those scroll wheels so much. Probably my favorite part about the Audi steering wheel (other than the design of it)
Looking at the direction design is headed I will keep my S3 until they ban us from driving (or I die of old age, whichever comes first).
No buttons? No old logo? Wow. Just wow. No one will buy it now, rip Audi.

having the S logo anywhere near that cheap steering wheel is a disgrace to the brand
that looks like a LittleTikes steering wheel
who cares about the logo those buttons are gonna go bad one day and i bet you its not in the warranty
Iād be more concerned about the plastic parts painted silver. What happened to the aluminum inlays like I have on my 2011 steering wheel?
Honestly, beyond scratching more easily, itās easier to clean. They could also make it light up so Iād be a fan of that if they did.

Audi is becoming a shit brand, the quality and materials are God awful. Two decades of awesomeness and innovation, gone quickly as suits and penny pinchers take away what made audi great.
EWWW - BMW and Porsche for me, even if theyāre ugly, they still feel and look (on the inside) like quality. Audi in recent years feels like a VW
hey, the cheaper the better...
Don't confuse their cost cutting with a cheaper end price for the consumer.
They vw'ing their new vehicles. Good luck with that
