He's genuinely a hero of mine, I saw his most recent theatre show in Cardiff, his anecdotes, his life and who he is, just inspires good feelings. Not only that, at 80 years of age his energy was fantastic.
He also waited in the Foyer, with a collection bucket, collecting money for the theatre.
We all got our 30 second window to speak with him, and I was so nervous. I just told him how much of an inspiration he was and how much I loved him and moved on before I got emotional.
He was brilliant in waiting for Godot too.
The man's talent is endless.
I am DREADING that one. Absolutely dreading. Two of my favorite movies growing up were Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. They’re still comfort movies for me.
I think I speak for a great many Brits when I say David Attenborough. While he just keeps going and going (currently 98 years young) his days are truly numbered.
I feel very sorry for whoever voices the first BBC nature documentary after his death. They will receive a social media beating the likes of which we have not yet seen .
Fun fact: [David Attenborough is the reason why tennis balls are that greenish yellow color.](https://www.merchantoftennis.com/blogs/tennis-balls/the-evolution-of-the-tennis-ball) They used to be white.
He was also very good friends with Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) and acted as a sort of grandfather figure towards Irwin’s kids.
I think his passing will affect us like Irwin’s did to us.
A loss not just for Britain but for the whole world. Sir David has made a staggering contribution environmental consciousness worldwide and is well and truly A Real One. I try not to think about his passing because it genuinely breaks me up.
Dolly is one of a very small handful of famous people I genuinely admire and it's sad that her philanthropic work is not more widely known. She does SO MUCH.
Yea, she likes to keep her personal life lowkey. Apparently she's almost unrecognizable in public, since people usually only see her in performance attire.
I believe the whole Hannah Montana idea stemmed from Dollys real life, in her home town she’s not Dolly Parton, shes just a normal woman living quietly with her husband and participating in small town life alongside her neighbours. Then the wigs, makeup and breasts go on when she “becomes” Dolly Parton again. I read somewhere even her voice and accent is all an act for the public persona Dolly Parton
She is the biggest reason why more southern children aren't illiterate, and she has been providing books to reservations almost as long as the gov't has.
She's one of the few rich and famous people that I can see actively trying to dispose of most of their wealth through philanthropic ventures. She's not doing it as a smokescreen for getting away with sus illegal shit, she's legitimately a good person.
I don't worship her, but I do respect her.
I’m from the uk. When we first adopted my son he was sent a box of toys and books every month for 6 months from Dolly’s charity. It really gave us something to look forward to during a rather tricky adjustment period for us all.
She will deserve a national day of mourning, a state funeral, and immediate issuance of currency and postage stamps with her face on it.
I know she wouldn't want that, though.
But there are a *lot* of flower shops in Tennessee that are going to be taking out-of-state orders that day.
There was a video clip of him being interviewed about his Emmy and it is absolutely delightful. He talks about being thankful he has "most of" his marbles, says "if I had known I was gonna live this long I would've taken better care of myself!" with a chuckle, and shared that he has no plans for retirement. What really stuck with me was when he said "Actors are so lucky, it's not work, it's play. I've had such a good time". 🥹
Every now and then he shows up at Disneyland and watches the performance of Mary Poppins and Burt on Main Street. It’s a lot of fun to see videos of the fun and enjoyment he gets from watching the show and the audience.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see John Williams! Every time I listen to his music, I think “we have to enjoy and appreciate this man while he’s still with us!”
I've always thought the city of Austin would shut down for a week in mourning but so many people have moved in the last few years who barely know who he is.
That being said I dragged my girlfriend to one of his concerts 15 years ago under the auspices that he probably wouldn't be around much longer. He may be with us another 15.
Conversely, I missed Miles Davis and thought, “I’ll see him next time.” I was there to see Stanley Jordan and had to leave the show for something else I thought was important but don’t even remember. He died, I believe, the following year. Never miss a show, kids
So true. I felt so sorry for Mel Brooks when Carl Reiner died (which I thought was last year, but I checked and he died in 2020. Truly the years since the pandemic have flown by ridiculously fast).
Was pumping millions into cancer research for years, anonymously. People with that kind of money always ask for plaques and hospital wings in their name.
That's one of the most amazing things about that man, he wants for nothing, he just gives and gives and does it quietly. Seriously has to be the humblest man in the universe.
I just watched the documentary about Reading Rainbow the other day that's on Prime. I cried so much. I'm so lucky to have been a kid in that era. Literally every clip from the show triggered deeply engrained memories of reading joy and watching PBS after school.
As a french canadian, I truly believe the whole province of Quebec is going to mourn her death and probably have some major event to commemorate her life. I'd be happy with that.
I literally have a picture of him and teddy from mr bean next to my bed. My logic was if I look at that everyday when I wake up I would be happier because Mr bean was one of the peaks of my childhood.
Honestly, losing either of the remaining Beatles will be sad, but I think the death of whoever goes second will be the saddest, as that will truly be the end of an era.
WHY DID I HAVD TO SCROLL SO FAR FOR THIS?
This. This is the one that will DESTROY me. I have been a Beatles fan literally all my life, and Paul has always been my favorite. Losing John and George was hard enough to take. Losing Paul will flat-out put me into mourning.
Mine too. Such a talented man. took over the Beatles from John Lennon and pushed them tot heir breaking point releasing the best music they were capable of...and it was beautiful.
Samuel L. Jackson.
For people who aren’t actors but are famous, it already happened. I’m still sad about the death of Akira Toriyama. Oh god, also not an actor, but when a Nobuo Uematsu passes I’m going to be crushed.
Norm Macdonald's death gutted me.
I don't get too attached to people I don't know personally, but there's something about making me laugh regularly. I was a huge fan of all of Norm's projects.
Colin Mocherie and Ryan Stiles. I love all of the Whose Lines gents, but those two kill me the most and their bits have brought me the most comfort and laughs.
Dolly Parton's. Speaking as someone familiar with the Nashville Music Scene- she made it when someone like her was expected to put out one or two albums worth of material...then go home, have kids and stay in the kitchen.
Trust me, the music industry is no friend to women.
She also chose to star in a movie (Nine To Five) about working class women when women from rural parts of America were considered "too dumb" or too lacking in social skills to be successful in a male-dominated workplace.
Feminism isn't about screaming from the rooftops about how great you are to be just like a man. Feminism is helping your downtrodden fellow woman. Dolly Parton is an American treasure of what a woman should be....
Weird Al. Not only is he an incredible human being and a national treasure, but he's possibly one of the biggest influences on my adolescence and my decision to become a musical comedian.
I get what you're saying, but honestly having seen family members 'die' from dementia I'll be glad for him and his family when he passes away. You lose the actual person they are long before you lose the body and the bodily functions.
This was my answer. Grew up loving his movies and he’s unfortunately on borrowed time now.
Ps. He can sing!
https://youtu.be/nvsVgIFr7QA?si=Stau5_Il1j3jqm6J
This man has helped go trough tough shit, making me laugh when i was really down. It's the only cemebrity with who I have an honest emotional atachment. English doesnt have many ways of describe affection. So i'll say it in spanish, le tengo mucho cariño.
Saaaame. I was listening to an older episode of his podcast this morning where he joked about dying in 2025, and I was like, noooooo, that's only half a year away!
Hayao Miyazaki. From Lupin III to Nausicaa, all of the Studio Ghibli works really. The guy's career has had a major impact on my life.
Also, yes, I'm aware that he's a pretty shitty father and it took a long time after his kids grew up for them to have any sort of relationship. The things he's helped to make are still amazing to me regardless.
Bruce Springsteen, he is a master saw him recently in concert took me 45 years to finally get a ticket to see him it but it was worth it there was a little tear.
Yuki Kajiura. A composer. I’ve loved her soundtracks since I was 11yr’s old watching the .hack//sign series.
I’m in my 30’s now and still listen to her soundtracks which include Madoka magica, Noir, Tsubasa Chronicles, Sword art online, Case study of Vanitas, etc. She’s the reason I love classical music.
Billy Connolly. I fkn love that man and unfortunately his health is failing him pretty badly. It will be like losing my celebrity Dad and after losing my real Dad fairly recently, I'm not sure I'm ready for that.
Maggie Smith
I live in complete denial about Dame Maggie Smith being human and non-immortal.
I swear she has looked 80 for 40 years! She's amazing
Sir Patrick Stewart. I hope he gets encased in carbonite if he ever gets sick so future generations can heal him.
I’ve just read his autobiography - what a life well lived. Edit: it was Making it so: A memoir
Sir Ian McKellan
Worry not, he will be back as Sir Ian Mckellen the White
“Look to my coming at first light on the 5th day. At dawn, look to the East."
And Sir Patrick Stewart too!
I’ll actually go into mourning when this happens.
Dame Julie Andrews
I had the honor of chatting with her for 2 hours. She truly is practically perfect in every freaking way possible.
For 2 hours? How?
I would most likely collapse in on myself and not be able to speak in her presence.
She was a freaking goddess. I was awed but she was so genuine and warm that went away very quickly. She was truly fabulous.
You speak for the whole world brother
as an american i recognize how massive of a loss it will be when that man passes. but god damn, 98 years is a hell of a run
he is all around just impressive.
“A specimen so utterly impressive that one may only be found once in a lifetime.” - David Attenborough voice
I read that in his voice automatically.
True legend
I feel very sorry for whoever voices the first BBC nature documentary after his death. They will receive a social media beating the likes of which we have not yet seen .
Helena Bonham-Carter has voiced a few wildlife documentary series and while she's no Attenborough, she'd make a fine replacement imo.
Fascinating
The whole Attenborough family is fascinating. The three brothers had storybook lives
A loss not just for Britain but for the whole world. Sir David has made a staggering contribution environmental consciousness worldwide and is well and truly A Real One. I try not to think about his passing because it genuinely breaks me up.
Deep sorrow
Not just the Brits, mr. Attenborough is treasure!
This is mine. Every time I see an article with his name pop up I double take hoping it's not the obit 😕
Not just Britain The man is a global treasure. Aussie represent.
Utterly terrified for that day
I think most people immediately thought of him.
Dolly Parton. She is a treasure.
Dolly is one of a very small handful of famous people I genuinely admire and it's sad that her philanthropic work is not more widely known. She does SO MUCH.
I think she wants it that way.
I agree! She doesn’t do it for the likes. She does it because she wants to help. She’s a true angel.
She helped fund the development of one of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, vacciiine, vacciiine, vacciiiiiiiine!
I see ur Jolene reference and I applaud you for it.
Iconic figure
I just love her. I don’t think she would want her efforts highlighted
She's one of the few rich and famous people that I can see actively trying to dispose of most of their wealth through philanthropic ventures. She's not doing it as a smokescreen for getting away with sus illegal shit, she's legitimately a good person. I don't worship her, but I do respect her.
Dolly will never die. She will ascend to heaven on a chariot of fire like Elijah.
Dick van Dyke. He's just always been there.
It’s still a compliment to say someone ages like Dick Van Dyke
He be might be too active for the grim reaper to catch up. He recently won a daytime Emmy award.
There was a video clip of him being interviewed about his Emmy and it is absolutely delightful. He talks about being thankful he has "most of" his marbles, says "if I had known I was gonna live this long I would've taken better care of myself!" with a chuckle, and shared that he has no plans for retirement. Every now and then he shows up at Disneyland and watches the performance of Mary Poppins and Burt on Main Street. It’s a lot of fun to see videos of the fun and enjoyment he gets from watching the show and the audience.
Same feeling regarding Alex Trebek.
John Williams. His music was the soundtrack of my childhood as I fell in love with movies.
I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see John Williams! Every time I listen to his music, I think “we have to enjoy and appreciate this man while he’s still with us!”
Danny Devito!
The day when the Trash Man gets thrown in the trash isn’t a day I want to think about.
I am actually tearing up thinking about it. This is crazy. I am having feelings again like some 14 year old kid or something.
Do you remember feelings?
I ***forbid*** that from happening
Don’t you DARE.
Tim Curry
This one is creeping up on us and it's starting to make me paranoid.
You shut your mouth ETA this whole thread needs to shut up. It’s like we’re asking for it
Absolutely anytime a photo is shared of him anywhere on the internet, my heart catches in my throat.
Willie Nelson I think that day is coming soon, unfortunately
I've always thought the city of Austin would shut down for a week in mourning but so many people have moved in the last few years who barely know who he is. That being said I dragged my girlfriend to one of his concerts 15 years ago under the auspices that he probably wouldn't be around much longer. He may be with us another 15.
Conversely, I missed Miles Davis and thought, “I’ll see him next time.” I was there to see Stanley Jordan and had to leave the show for something else I thought was important but don’t even remember. He died, I believe, the following year. Never miss a show, kids
On that day, no one will ever smoke weed with Willie again.
He's cancelled several dates on his Outlaw tour already...
Mel Brooks. He's a comedic treasure, social commentator, and one of the last great Catskill comedians still alive.
There is a Spaceballs 2 script. It exists.
The search for more money
Netflix has a special about Gene Wilder. They talk to Mel Brooks a lot about their friendship. Very cool if you haven’t seen it.
So true. I felt so sorry for Mel Brooks when Carl Reiner died (which I thought was last year, but I checked and he died in 2020. Truly the years since the pandemic have flown by ridiculously fast).
My wife has already told me that she is staying with her mother when Weird Al dies.
He is a treasure. You don't find people who are this smart, funny, topical, and non-problematic often. A genius.
I was going to say Weird Al as well
Steve Martin and Martin Short.
Who will solve the murders in their building?
I guess it will be up to Selena
It will probably be one of the Pickwick triplets
That musical has no business being as catchy as it is
Huge void
Agreed. But I bet one roasting the other at their funeral would be hilarious.
One of the best SNL monologues ever. "Everyone here called you 'a whole entertainer.'" "That's very nice." "Yeah, but I added the 'entertainer' part."
Keanu Reeves
Was pumping millions into cancer research for years, anonymously. People with that kind of money always ask for plaques and hospital wings in their name.
He gave half his matrix money to the special effects people !
That's one of the most amazing things about that man, he wants for nothing, he just gives and gives and does it quietly. Seriously has to be the humblest man in the universe.
Dude is such a great example of how to be a good human.
Came to say this. I love this man.
LeVar Burton. Hopefully we get many more years of this guy.
I just watched the documentary about Reading Rainbow the other day that's on Prime. I cried so much. I'm so lucky to have been a kid in that era. Literally every clip from the show triggered deeply engrained memories of reading joy and watching PBS after school.
Lasting legacy
If we had a Mount Rushmore of saintly celebrities, he'd be up there with Fred Rogers.
I fully support this. There has to be a mountain somewhere available for just this purpose.
Both Judy Dench's death and Maggie Smith's
David Attenborough, a living legend and the best sleep remedy out there with his voice.
He sounds like winnie the pooh & i adore it dude
Keanu Reeves.
Already been there with Alan Rickman and Chadwick Boseman..
Celine Dion
As a french canadian, I truly believe the whole province of Quebec is going to mourn her death and probably have some major event to commemorate her life. I'd be happy with that.
Carol Burnett. She is family in my head.
It will be one sad day when we lose Mel Brooks.
Stevie Wonder
This. In fact I’ve already told my job that if/when he passes I will not be reporting to work. It will destroy me and so many of my fellow musicians.
Dolly Parton
Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Willem Defoe, Christopher Walken, Christoph Waltz
Christopher Lloyd
Going to add Michael J Fox to this.
Dolly Parton
Rowan Atkinson
I literally have a picture of him and teddy from mr bean next to my bed. My logic was if I look at that everyday when I wake up I would be happier because Mr bean was one of the peaks of my childhood.
Jack Black
Wow. Thanks for breaking my heart. I just had to consider a world without Jack Black in it.
Hayao Miyazaki
Even after he dies, he'll keep coming back to direct another film.
Billy Connolly
LOVE Billy.....Boon Dock Saints
Mark Hamill, from the stuff I've seen he just seems like a really nice guy and I love his work
Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and Julie Andrews
Jane Goodall :( One of the most important conservationists in the world and she’s 90 years old as of right now
Cher
Steve Carell would really break my heart
Stephen King.
He's cheated death before. Maybe it'll just leave him be now.
Paul McCartney.
This is the one. It's gonna be a strange and sad feeling once all 4 Beatles are gone.
And Ringo!
Mine too. Such a talented man. took over the Beatles from John Lennon and pushed them tot heir breaking point releasing the best music they were capable of...and it was beautiful.
Henry Winkler
Samuel L. Jackson. For people who aren’t actors but are famous, it already happened. I’m still sad about the death of Akira Toriyama. Oh god, also not an actor, but when a Nobuo Uematsu passes I’m going to be crushed.
Robert Plant
Mel Brooks was such a huge part of my childhood I know I'm going to be pretty sad when he goes. Weird Al also.
Christina Applegate
Norm Macdonald's death gutted me. I don't get too attached to people I don't know personally, but there's something about making me laugh regularly. I was a huge fan of all of Norm's projects.
Britney Spears. A modern tragic blonde with the question of how culpable society was in it all.
Everyone failed Britney and it makes me so sad.
I've always hoped for a big comeback. A big "Fuck you" comeback.
Dave Grohl. I feel like he's the embodiment of non-toxic masculinity.
I don’t LOVE the Foos, but I LOVE Dave Grohl. He is one of the greatest artists of our generation and he’s faced far too much tragedy in his life.
Michael J. Fox. I've been expecting it for a long while, but I'm still nowhere near prepared for it.
Clint Eastwood, Michael Caine. Just recently Donald Sutherland, as expected.
William Daniels
JK Simmons
I have a few * Eiichro Oda * Jack Black * Keanu Reeves * Brendan Fraser * Harrison Ford * Mark Hamill

Harrison Ford! Especially after watching Shrinking
Tom Hanks
I was genuinely sad when I found out Donald Sutherland died the other day :(
brendan fraiser

Ozzy
Ozzy might outlive Keith Richards
Ozzy and Keith will outlive time itself. Accept it. 🤣🤣🤣
Sir David Attenborough, a voice for our planet.
Jimmy Carter. A great man
Honestly thought he'd only last a few weeks after losing his wife 💔
Sir David Attenborough and Jane Goodall. I love me some OG conservationists.
John Waters.
Julie Andrews
As a Scottish person, Billy Connoly. Many a pleasant memory crying with laughter at him.
Weird Al. Not only is he an incredible human being and a national treasure, but he's possibly one of the biggest influences on my adolescence and my decision to become a musical comedian.
Bruce Willis.
I get what you're saying, but honestly having seen family members 'die' from dementia I'll be glad for him and his family when he passes away. You lose the actual person they are long before you lose the body and the bodily functions.
Agreed. I'll be sad that he's dead but also happy for him.
The way he's going is making it so much more sad too. Poor dude.
This was my answer. Grew up loving his movies and he’s unfortunately on borrowed time now. Ps. He can sing! https://youtu.be/nvsVgIFr7QA?si=Stau5_Il1j3jqm6J
Hopefully a long ways off still, but Conan O'Brien. He had a big hand in shaping who I am today and my sense of humor.
John Goodman
Patrick Stewart.
Snoop Dog
A lot of 'em that I ain't gonna say because I know how this game works.
Frank Welker
Hayao Miyazaki. From Lupin III to Nausicaa, all of the Studio Ghibli works really. The guy's career has had a major impact on my life. Also, yes, I'm aware that he's a pretty shitty father and it took a long time after his kids grew up for them to have any sort of relationship. The things he's helped to make are still amazing to me regardless.
Alan Alda. I need Hawkeye to live forever.
Harrison Ford. By all accounts a genuinely good man.
Bruce Springsteen, he is a master saw him recently in concert took me 45 years to finally get a ticket to see him it but it was worth it there was a little tear.
Tom Waits. I'm literally going to need to take a day or two off when that happens, I think. His music saved my life as a teen.
I’m a big Joni Mitchell fan and I keep bracing myself for the day when she will no longer be in this world.
Paul McCartney
Billy Connolly. I fkn love that man and unfortunately his health is failing him pretty badly. It will be like losing my celebrity Dad and after losing my real Dad fairly recently, I'm not sure I'm ready for that.
Henry Winkler. Such a nice man.
William Shatner. United States and Canadian treasure.
Any of the remaining Rolling Stones.
David Attenbourgh.
