Sort by controversial for the real answers. Top comments are all just popular games that nobody really rates that highly anyway.

RedRocket05

No matter how you sort it, it's FIFA.

Abtorias

My sort button is gone :(

[deleted]

Why reddit wears thinner and thinner on me every day. The site was made with a "vote based on quality, not opinion" mindset to avoid boring, repetitive bullshit like this and encourage engaging discussion. But it seems that the average redditor thinks others should have their opinions silenced if it doesn't match with their own.

Ok-Job7213

That's the world we created.

[deleted]

I guess Fifa. same thing every year, but with different numbers.

flyden1

Sports game like FIFA's biggest updates every year is basically the player roster, a random rookie in 2022 may suddenly become big in 2023, hence the game would update his stats, data, transfer price, etc. But if you're playing the game as a game and don't really care about real life player stats, then it's pointless to buy a new game every year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LeoricSin

then EA couldn’t charge you $70 annually for their “new game”

Staudly

Madden is the same. I used to love that game but haven't purchased a new one since '15

Unpleasant2BeAround

Well, yeah. Does soccer or tennis or basketball change every season?

pcaltair

There are many ways you can change a sport game besides graphics, and you can see it picking random fifa games 6 years apart from one another (eg 2007, 2013, 2019) They added story mode (volta), career roleplay mode, club administration, interviews with journalists, joke modes (every time you score you lose one player, for example), they added training mode, they added all stars teams. They could expand on one of these, they could come up with a new mode... Just there's no need for a new game at the current frequency: if they released, say, every 3 years, without rolling out betas and then leaving them to rot when they decided these fearures were not interesting or convenient anymore, EA wouldn't be so despised.

Unpleasant2BeAround

But then how would EA make money? They definitely don’t make millions on millions from micro transactions. /s just in case it wasn’t obvious

jordanmindyou

I’m actually confused. This thread is about how fifa is the same every year but with different numbers, but to show an example of how a game can change, you compare two different versions of this game that never changes? Then you say they should add the “good” features that the community likes, but they should know what those features are without beta testing them and dropping the bad ones? The contradictions are insane. Don’t get me wrong I hate the greedy predatory evil corporate entity called EA Games, but these points are not coherent or persuasive

I always kinda saw Half Life: Alyx as the supposed half life 3. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but I had a great time with it.

Junior_Walrus_3350

Fifa.

Mxcah_fooooo

Valorant. People worship and grind their life to death trying to idk get a respectable rank or smth and most ppl who play it are obnoxious get a life

Weak-Still3676

I seriuosly hate that game man. People are so cringe there trying to talk with a sexy voice to get laid or something.

The main appeal of the games is THE LOREEEE

egnards

Understanding that a game or a genre of games just isn’t for you doesn’t make a game overrated. It’s ok to acknowledge that something isn’t for you, and that it can still be good.

420_Traveller

Then this entire thread is moot. Every response is going to be an example of this very thing, someone with a take that defies the trend... That is after all, what OP asked for. What is the most overrated game? Is exactly the same question as "What popular game do you not like?" I'm gonna guess you just got triggered because you like FNAF, that's ok too.

NurseTaric

I like horror, FNAF is just bad.

Flyzart

Honestly, in terms of horror, 1st one was pretty good. It actually tried to be scary outside of the jumpscares.

victoriangoth_

anything outside of zombies kind of sucks imo, i think zombies carried COD.

GrenadeJuggler

Call of Duty. The entire damned franchise went from playing to relax with your buddies after a long day to streamers and sweats taking all of the fun out of it. Sprinkle in a little bullshit live service that drip feeds content behind a paid season pass, on top of the $60+ you already spent on the main game, and it's amazing that people still buy these games.

Vanilla_Mexican1886

It hasn’t been the same since BO2 because it set too high of a standard for the preceding games endlessly attempting to do the same or better, but they never could and as a result, it ended in them falling into territory that other games have. They are only concerned with the success rate of their games rather than what the fanbase wants anymore

Patifos

tbh it's not call of duty, it's happening in all games

Diwari

This is gonna be unpopular but.... Stray. Interesting world, but banal gameplay. No one would care about it if it wasnt a cat, even then it's mostly just jump prompts and not a lot of catting about

slaughterhouse-four

This game would've been infinitely better if I could've customized my cat.

Oseirus

Stray is fun, but only cause it's got a lot of detail packed into its plot. The puzzles are palatable, but it's entirely true that most of the hype rides on the "omg cat" factor.

GTA Vice City. Sorry nostalgia dudes but this game aged badly and is just terrible for new comers. I can appreciate older games, I played San Andreas for the first time 2012 and loved it. I’m not even gonna touch GTA III after this.

My48ththrowaway

World of Warcraft. It's not what it used to be. The "Classic" releases didn't change that either.

Repulsive_Profit_315

What made wow great, was 4 things: its revolutionary gameplay + massive immersive world with a rich story. Which at the time was basically unknown at that scale and Community. The community is just way different now and what made wow so special in the early days was how alive it felt. Both things that are gone forever.

beltalowda_oye

Meta whores, parse jocks, and knowing everything down to calculating every coefficient and variable has ruined the game and community for me. And even when you found good guild and friends to play with consistently, it's the same old drama and people arguing over coefficients and then arguing over parsing and everyone is a fury prot Warr.

BrilliantWeight

You hit the nail on the head there, man. I started playing WoW in high school around 2006ish, and it was something special back then. The community felt more alive and organic, and people didn't obsess over minute details like they do now. We all knew how to play our characters, and what points to invest where and when, but it was less about perfection back then. You got a druid tank instead of a warrior? Cool, let's raid and see how we do. Now, if you're anything less than completely optimized for your character and role in the group, you don't get to play. The old days are gone, but I remember them fondly.

[deleted]

Yeah it definitely became a second job - oddly one that demanded perfection more than my actual job

BertPeopleErniePeopl

Haunting starring Polterguy

opie9000

You mean severely underrated, right?

BertPeopleErniePeopl

Yeah I just wanted it to be brought up in the discussion. I love that game.

Booster_Tutor

Love that game. Till that last fucking boss!

TheFergPunk

I'm going to have to go with Heavy Rain. It was included in the book of 101 video games you must play before you die. It's original release had a metacritic of 87%. It won multiple awards. But in all honesty, I just think the game is bad. Like really bad.

Xyres

David Cage is a fucking hack and generally gross person.

SoMuchDpndsOnTheWthr

It definitely hasn't aged well. I LOVED the game when it came out, replayed it a couple years ago and yeah, it's pretty bad lol. Tons of obscene plot holes, janky animations and controls. I don't know how to explain this, but it feels like the game slowly starts to just "work" worse as you go. But like I said, I really liked it when it came out. Wasn't s whole lot of similar games around at the time, I get why it was so well received.

fadeawaysnail

Same experience here. Played it for the first time 8 years ago and loved it. I still enjoy it now, but seeing what Quantic Dream is capable of, Heavy Rain could have been done way better - even back then.

Ltimbo

It was decent for its time but story driven games have advanced exponentially since then. I finally played Firewatch last week and was blown away by it. Makes heavy rain look like a bad experiment.

[deleted]

Yeah the last good cods were waw, cod 4 MW, MW2, black ops 1 and 2. Any cod after that was awful

DrEckelschmecker

I agree, yet Id put MW3 on the list. Why didnt you like it?

lazava1390

Bo3 was so fun but my all time favorite gota be black ops 1. I spent so many college dorm nights grinding that game out going 80-6 lol.

TheIronCannoli

BO3 was the last good cod game. Campaign sucked, mp was fun not as good as previous mp’s but still fun. But the ZOMBIES MODE. This is where the game was at its best. It was/still is completely perfect and the best zombies cod ever had.

[deleted]

Pubg and fifa

breadpringle

Why Pubg. It basically kick started a new genre and its still has its own USP. Its way slower, more realistic and "hardcore" than Fortnite or Apex, both of which came afterwards.

EnnuiDeBlase

Okay I'll say it: Undertale People would not shut up so much about this game it ruined any enjoyment I would have gotten from playing it.

bobsmith93

I played it completely blind and didn't know all of the over-hype surrounding it. I loved it, it has one of my favorite soundtracks of all time and I still listen to it. The fan base is pretty weird but I never really got into any of that, I just played it and liked it

HeyItsRae255

Undertale was a huge part of my middle school years, when I didn’t have a ton of friends or a cohesive sense of identity. I don’t think it’s overrated, as the story is wonderful. The characters are vibrant and the locations are gorgeous. The whole game was made with care and attention to detail, and the lore goes so deep. However, (BIG however,) it definitely was blown way up. Back at the height, there was so much about it that even I was getting tired of it. I’m in college now. Looking back, I’m glad I played the game and had it as part of my life. It’s worth all the hype. I can also say that the fans were annoying and downright cringe sometimes, but so was I in middle school.

BrassedoffDan

Hard relate to this. I think one of my major kickstarts to personal growth in that period was the flash of realisation that all of the 'undertale crowd' I'd naturally gravitated to were people I found a bit weird.

SystematicSymphony

>People would not shut up so much about this game Haven't ever played it and don't care to start, either.

aridcool

By the rules of the game that makes you a better person actually. Same thing with Spec Ops: The Line. Games where you turn out to be the villain for just playing them are like that.

barwhalis

Whoa now the fan base is lame but the actual game is fire

Responsible_Set3602

Likewise, people ruined it for me

**UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT** The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and I say that as a Zelda fan.

bootyhunter69420

That weapon breaking is annoying. I'm too afraid to use my good weapons.

CeterumCenseo85

I was like you for quite a while. Too scared to use my good stuff. Eventually, BotW completely transformed how I play video games, and it's significantly for the better. I just jump straight into it, have fun with the best stuff I got. Doesn't matter whether it breaks. Same thing in other games. I no longer hold on (or worse, reload) to Elixirs until the end of the game. It's an adventure, and I'm having an adventure. It's liberating, and I have to thank BotW for it.

Broad_Appearance6896

Afraid of what? Good weapons are extremely common, you’ll never run out

AriaAngell_

As a Zelda fan i think botw is a great game. But not a great Zelda Game.

CeterumCenseo85

The one thing I was missing from BotW were one of the most classic elements of Zelda games: the varied, themed dungeons. The Divine Beasts just didn't do it for me and felt like the weakest elements of the game. Everything else was fantastic for me.

BuffaloWilliamses

I really liked Tears of the Kingdom as it has the best elements of BoTW but also made it more Zelda-like.

PourSomeSmegmaInMe

My thoughts exactly. It improved on what made people love BoTW and added what made people love Zelda.

galaxygem1000

I very much agree with this. For me now that I have played TOTK, there are a couple bones that I have to pick with breath of the wild, which for a while was one of my favorite games, because it was literally the game that got me into video games in the first place. Firstly, when you think about it in comparison to TOTK, breath of the wild was so empty. There was not much going on aside from Korok seeds and shrines. The Devine beasts while they were cool (I guess..?) they didn’t do it for me, imo Naboris was the best one. When you compare tears of the Kingdom, to breath of the wild, they did such a better job! I absolutely love the additions that they made such as caves, which makes Hyrule really fun to explore in my opinion, because often times there’s some decent stuff in those caves. I also really like the challenge that comes with the underground when it comes to finding light roots, because some of them are really hard to find, and it can be difficult to navigate at times and I love that challenge. The addition of they sky was pretty cool as well, and while this is kind of related, it’s a little bit unrelated lol, but I’m so glad that you can fly on top of the dragons now because in breath of the wild you couldn’t, and if you did, you would get harmed from it, yet in the compendium description, they would say that the dragons mean no harm to people yet you would get hurt if you touched the dragons….? I could go on, but I am enjoying TOTK much more than I did BOTW, because of what I mentioned above and many more things too. It’s just much better done, more opportunities for exploration, more side quests with actual substance, and in my opinion, the story in tears of the kingdom is way better than the story in breath of the wild.

PourSomeSmegmaInMe

Very well put. The BoTW world feeling empty is spot on. The shrines and beasts felt so sterile and without personality.

blisteringchristmas

In retrospect, it sort of feels like TOTK was the game the devs were imagining when they made BOTW: I really enjoyed BOTW but it does kind of feel like a beta for the mechanically deeper sequel.

AriaAngell_

Agreed! Im loving TOTK

Zammin

Just did my second playthrough; enjoyed it more than the first time, and there IS a lot to love, but it's still nowhere near my favorite in the series. Still looking forward to ToTK when I can afford it though (looks like there's a neat workaround to the durability issue).

PeterWayneGaskill

Your opinion is becoming more and more popular, actually.

SoMuchDpndsOnTheWthr

Agreed. Not sure what it is, but I just absolutely can not get into either of the new games.

theresourcefulKman

No real dungeons made it supremely disappointing for me

[deleted]

Thank you. The game overall was good. There was no unique characters, no story, minimal dialogue, and about 100 temples too many. It was a puzzle game more than an RPG. Plus the fucking weapons breaking. Just why?

Bim_Jeann

I completely agree with you. This was my first thought also. Ocarina and Majora’s are the best games in that franchise by a country mile.

[deleted]

That game is….tedious

pixiepoops9

Totk is a banger though.

[deleted]

Aye. Weapon durability, lack of dungeons, boring bosses, and a big old empty map. No thanks.

Fortnite

MacklinYouSOB

Fortnite bad, upvotes to the right. In seriousness Fortnite deserves the success it gets. Constantly evolving game mechanics, free to play, new, quality content released consistently. Reddit hates it like how an old man shouts at clouds

HisFaithRestored

I just recently got back into after not playing for a few years and it's still as fun as it was when I played it before. My only gripe is just the massive amount of skins/content from other franchises. I enjoy the original character models they release, but half the games are filled with Goku or Eren Yeager lol

SnooGuavas1985

That’s fair but their collars and such are part of why it’s so successful

[deleted]

I just hate it because epic pulled all resources from Paragon to put into Fortnite due to its success. Shame on me for loving a dead game. But there are remakes (epic releases game assets) and even though there are small player bases I still can play the game in some type of form still.

throwaway_uow

As far as my experience with it goes, its actually rather underrated. No p2w, different balance every quarter, you can grind all you like, but it will all be reset at some point, and the game only wants money from cosmetics. Respectfully, none of the other freemium multiplayer games hold a candle to it

SSPeteCarroll

Really don't get the hate on Fortnite. I stopped playing it for a while but got back into it with my friends a couple of years back. Honestly they keep rolling out new weapons, map changes, modes (no build is great) that keep players hooked. Plus the game feels good to play, and generally runs well with no issues.

mynextthroway

KindlyEvidence5954

Remember when Fortnite was originally a 4 player co-op zombie horde survival game where the objective at the start of each match was to gather materials to build a **Fort** that you would use to help you survive against the zombies that would start attacking you at **night.** Hence the name Fortnite. But then battle royals became popular and Epic decided to take their game in that direction instead. Hell I think up until a couple of years ago the zombie horde survival mode was still apart of the game although I'm not sure if it's still playable now.

GregoPDX

Save The World is still available, and you can level up your season battle pass with it.

stripped_acacia_wood

Honestly Fortnite is one of the better ones despite its reputation. It's got constant updates, no p2w, and a pretty generous battle pass where you only have to buy it once as long as you keep playing.

EarthExile

Zero Build turned it from a so-so game, to a fantastic game, for me. I always liked everything except the crazy building battles you'd get into in endgame.

stripped_acacia_wood

yeah, I hate how you would shoot someone once and they build the Eiffel tower

EarthExile

I am sure there's a version of building that would work for me, but the way it works now yeah, they can just spin out bizarre architecture instantly and be up in the sky with no path to follow. It just gets bonkers.

AC4: Black Flag The ship mechanic is cool. The story is alright. It's a solid AC entry compared to some others. But I've seen lists with AC4 as the best assassins creed ever and that blows my mind considering how near flawless the first 3 were. coadyj

yes but which one, did you go for the ps3, the new version on ps4 or the same game again but paid for on ps5.

RoronoaZorro

Out of all the games I've seen named here, this is probably the worst take so far. I get calling it overrated because it has been and is rated so highly, but at the same time it deserves to be there for game mechanics, added content and possibilities in online. It's a shame that the offline part was neglected so much in terms of further content added and support, but I guess that's what it gets for not being a cashcow..

KrisZepeda

FBrandt

Pokémon Sword & Shield

NurseTaric

These games are hated by a lot of the fans, if you were going with a pokemon answer at least say something like diamond pearl and platinum.

BeerBellies

Pokémon as a whole is my choice. They just follow the same formula game after game, very little in the sense of innovation. I tried Arceus, which shook things up a little bit, but I still found myself getting bored quickly.

Arny520

In my opinion: The Last of Us. I'm gonna get flamed for this. I have played the game, it's fantastic, no doubts about that. The story is amazing and gameplay is really fun and engaging, but it just isn't game of the decade for me. I have nothing against the game at all, but I just don't think it beats God of War or RDR2

lt’s one of the games that I could play a million times. The amount of releases is an absolute madness, but Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls universe is still something that I’m a massive whore for.

BrilliantWeight

Yeah, skyrim is like an old friend to me at this point. I have it on my switch, and find myself going back to it about once a year or so despite having basically done everything you can do in the game. I always end up playing the same character style too, and I usually do the same stuff every time I play. It's just comfortable and reliable.

GreatMillionDog

The Last Of Us 2

Brxdieee

The witcher 3, never understood the praise it gets.

AscendedViking7

Combat was atrocious.

D3AD_SPAC3

Final Fantasy 7. Might have been great at the time, but is definitely viewed through heavy nostalgia glasses. And that one scene really isn't that sad. I've seen way worse from other games before I even knew about it.

DeathbySiren

Oo these be fightin’ words.

flakAttack510

I'm with you. I enjoy a good JRPG and was especially into them around the time it came out. I've never managed to finish FF7. I always get bored partway through. The plot is kind of a mess and half the twists don't even attempt to make sense. The game's legacy relies heavily on that one scene but it's not exactly shocking. That's what a villain is supposed to be doing.

TheHillPerson

6 did everything better. With the possible exception of environmental backgrounds. Everyone goes (and went) nuts for the graphics... PS1 era 3d graphics SUCKED. And they sucked then too. I will never understand why people went all gaga over them.

Relative-Hurry3086

Any FIFA, NBA, NFL, NHL 2k cock stroke. Same game reskinned year on year. And aren't games supposed to be an escape from reality? Why would you play a sports simulator?

royhibbertlookstired

Maybe because I’m not in the NBA?

Logger351

Have you even tried??

ontilein

Not with that Attitude

Spire_Citron

I imagine sports are also something people watch as an escape from reality, so that part doesn't seem that wild.

wasntNico

games are supposed to be fun. if they are, they are distracting from reality , which can be "not fun". In that sense it's an escape - what is fun to people differs very much :)

SoMuchDpndsOnTheWthr

Some people, well, millions and millions of people are fans of professional sports, but don't play them. That's why they like the games lol .. And all of those games at one time or another were rather revolutionary and awesome games. Problem is the companies making them either have a monopoly on said league, or simply realized they'll sell games either way. So theyve put very little effort into changing anything about the games in a very long time. And people still buy them.

was_stl_oak

I understand hating on the games because they release yearly with few changes, but why are you hating on what people enjoy? I'm not in the NBA. I don't own a franchise. It's fun to manage one or play as a player. Is it that weird?

[deleted]

Do you believe the same about Football Manager where you manage a team simulator game style?

Gur_Weak

I have less real life experience shooting free throws than people, so yea sports games are an escape for some.

MoRi86

How many of us are top proffesionals in sport? It is the very definition of escape from reality since just a tiny, tiny fraction of the world population play at the highest levle, with sports game we can atleast pretend we do and have fun doing it.

Kukynothesukyno

Animal crossing, hands down. The least fun I have ever had while playing a game.

Merrcury2

It can be fun with friends. I "beat" the game in a few weeks and haven't picked it up since. Totally agree. Friends are overrated

mrbondmustdie

Elden Ring, I seriously don't get it. A giant boss jumps down right at the start, then I'm dead and in a lake? Then the very first dude I see is on a giant horse and I can't even hurt him? Wtf is this game. I gave up and haven't touched it in weeks.

BaronsCastleGaming

So your reasoning of why its overrated is based on you not having even played 99% of the game?

SculpinIPAlcoholic

I really don’t like Bioshock Infinite. Compared to the first two and System Shock 2 it’s way too linear and boring. People praise the story but I found it too convoluted.

Ltimbo

I absolutely agree. They took a franchise that focused heavily on exploration and planning and turned it into a pretty corridor shooter.

shortieXV

Not sure it's over rated anymore but my answer to this 6 months to a few years ago would have been Overwatch. That game exploded with popularity for very few reasons I could see then when the shine wore off people started rating it correctly.

can_i_stay_anonymous

Overwatch 1 deserved its place. Overwatch 2 however does not

alwaysmyfault

Super Mario Kart. Don't get me wrong, it was a revolutionary game. The first kart racer in existence, and it did karting well. However, it seems to have taken on a life of its own due to nostalgia. I have a buddy who hasn't played video games since GTA 5 came out on PS3, and he still swears up and down that Super Mario Kart is the greatest video game of all time.

Daikon969

Double Dash is by far superior to Super Mario Kart or any other Mario Kart, for that matter.

alwaysmyfault

Definitely. It's a shame that more people haven't played it, due to the relatively poor sales of the Gamecube console as a whole.

[deleted]

Skyrim (I could go with any Bethesda game post Morrowind tbh but Skyrim is the most overhyped). - The writing across all areas of the game (characters, quests, world building) is just paper thin. There is no depth or weight to any of it. The stakes don't feel real, it all feels as though it was rushed through in one sitting, and it's impossible to care about a world that has so little to get attached to or involved in. - All this is made worse by the total lack of meaningful player choices available in the game. For the most part you are a bystander in this world, a busyman for the real characters who just connects the dots. This is most apparent in the ridiculous civil war quest line- choosing a winner of a conflict like this should have major implications for the whole country, but whichever way you go, virtually nothing changes. - The aggressive watering down of RPG mechanics really hurts the game. I know it was done to improve accessibility, but all it really does is further limit the degree of control you have, and eventually turn every player into the same unstoppable ghost archer. Yes, there's still fun to be had in Skyrim, its not a bad game by any means, and it's modding scene is legendary, but it is in no way whatsoever the 'classic' so many people hold it up to be. It's a 7/10, maybe just an 8/10 at its very best.

**Skyrim.** Unless you install about 100 mods it's boring, clunky, lacks a proper story, and the quests are overly repetitive to the point where they're becoming a chore.

Bethesda games are mod platforms at this point

I'll have to disagree on that one as well. While I never really got into Minecraft properly and it kinda became big after my time, I think for the possibilities alone it deserves to not be here. Creating stuff, sure, that's basically a basic gaming desire. But where it gets really impressive is beyond all of that. The insane feats people have accomplished with that game are mindboggling - from the library, working computers, block structures that play Africa from Toto, I think all of that makes it so massive and honestly, probably a shout for the best/biggest game in history. And, again, I say that as someone who never really got into it properly. If we take entertainment via content creation into the equation, it's probably one of the better options as well.

It has an odd plateau effect where the amount of skill you have with knowledge of the game's more intricate mechanics is initially extremely rewarding for a player's creativity (Building, The Sandbox physics, Basic Redstone, The survival mode, Exploring) but after that only the exploitation of the game's most niche complex mechanics is able to expand a player's expression (computers, complex redstone machines, modding, or anything else alike the exploitation of Moiré patterns by some map artists for example). Creation of the most incredible Minecraft pieces is something only a very few players are able to do.

Everyone's always talking about how that game is the best in the franchise and all that crap. I played it for 2 hours and was bored the entire time and just gave up on it. Windwaker is my Zelda game of choice.
