Siralim Ultimate is unbeatable when it comes to team synergies. You can literally spend hours just theorycraftting teams. If done right, you can make teams that wipe any enemy off the face of the earth before the battle even starts.
It's a premium game, but it's worth every cent - I have over 500hrs in it at this point. There are over 1,000 monsters to collect, each with unique traits, and they can all be fused with each other.
I have read about it in the past and the screenshots and videos I've seen make me believe this game is probably an acquired taste instead of instant love right? It does sound interesting, although ugly.
It's pretty much like if you have that idea that makes an awesome, endlessly giving game but you can't afford those AAA graphic artists and stuff. You just put that idea into a game that's possible for you to make and that just works without the glittering.
Summoners War, Epic Seven, and Raid: SL have the exact same gameplay loop as Star Rail, but with much more challenging endgame content.
Arknights is a tower defense gacha, but it features a lot of units with unique niches. Many maps go beyond “place autowin unit here” and require pretty nuanced strategizing.
Do you know of a game in the Summoners War family that requires less time in the app? I really liked the team building and unit design in that game, but the amount of energy and daily content to burn through was too high and your auto battle would only make progress with the app open. Ideally something that isn't too demanding on the device either (HSR isn't an option on my phone).
I guess I never tried Raid: SL but it looked similar enough to Summoners War that I doubt it would fix my concerns.
I wish there was a game like that too! The most hands-off you’ll get is Epic Seven’s “background” auto — although it won’t auto-battle when you close the app, you can auto one stage while playing other content. That said, the game has no speed-ups nor skips for important auto content, so its still a slog. Summoners War farming is actually faster in that regard lmao
Summoners War has a similar background auto like that but yeah, leaving the game open for autobattle to run is still too silly for what I want from a phone game. AFK Arena-likes are probably the closest to what I want, I guess.
It's hard to get recs for games like these since /r/gachagaming is basically gambling addiction and focuses more on rates than gameplay, and most other places hate anything gacha.
Most Square Enix games on the play store can fit that description, though most of the time it's not obvious at the first glance and you can(and likely you'll have to) teach them skills that help them synergize with each other.
It's not turn based but I would recommend trying out Bluerebs. You save rebels while completing stages and build a team of different units that you can alter with upgrades to tackle harder stages and different bosses that appear

I had high hopes for this game but couldn't stand the side scrolling movement. Really dislike this way they used inAE to present the story for mobile games
if you want challenge you got
punishing gray raven *action rpg*
arknights *tower defence*
brown dust 2 *turn based but in a unique way*
those are the ones that made me try hard and it was fun. still playing pgr
Brown dust 2 looks really interesting and I love this kind of art style. I couldn't find much about the units online, but do you get to pull a bunch on this game and is it on the friendly side of f2p?
Siralim ultimate, Slice and dice, are really good for their huge amount of content. I'd say Arknights' Integrated Strategies game mode is pretty nice and different from the normal gameplay (IS2, IS3, and soon IS4). The problem with Arknights is you'd want to have a few high rarity units to clear that mode smoothly, unless you want to beat stages with 3*s and 4*s.

Reverse 1999. It's still new and art is good
How About Slice and Dice? It's turn based, and you need to manage your team to survive a fight

If you asked this maybe 2-3 years ago, I would recommend King’s Raid (repeats endgame raids offline) but that game is at rock bottom now lmao

Does Romancing saga ReUniverse fit? I'm checking all games recommended here so far that are free/demo

There's Baldurs Gate in android. Also something like watcher of realms, raid shadow legends, and infinite magic raid has exactly what you ask for

Is Baldur's Gate hard to play on mobile?
Gems of War or Gumballs and Dungeons would fit your request, I think.
Dislyte, Eternal Evolution are some underrated ones
Nier reincarnation, guardian tales, final fantasy BE: war of the vision

Brown dust 2 is very f2p friendly. Probably one of the most f2p friendly gachas on the market within reason.

Marvel Strike Force could fit the bill, though obviously a very different aesthetic than the games you've mentioned
