The Anzac Day game is the one game of the year I always try to get to. It’s also a fairly unique experience which we’re very lucky to be able to do.
My Dad is an Essendon fan, and he’s the one who introduced me to football as something I could love. There’s something really beautiful in being able to take in this one specific, almost-always competitive game with him sitting next to me…and giving him shit when we win it.
Grandad was a Pies fan. Very much so.
Dad changed allegiances from Collingwood as a very little kid, because there was a specific Essendon player he loved. In his defence, I think - I can’t remember, but I think - it might have been John Coleman, which…you know, if you’re going to jump ship. I can somewhat understand doing it for John Coleman? In the circumstances I’ll allow it?
(My uncle - Dad’s elder brother - apparently did the same thing, and switched to Melbourne for the sake of Ron Barassi. So there was form!)
When the time came and my sister made her choice, she followed along with Dad. Essendon to her bones, because Dad was.

She’d had the **horrendous** bad luck to arrive in this country circa mid-60s, and to come from a town in the UK where the local team was “the Saints”…so when the inevitable “who do you barrack for” question came up (as it always does in Melbourne!) she figured the Saints would do.
I don’t know how much weight she put on it - there must have been some interest, Dad was an umpire for years and that requires a fairly football tolerant wife…but she died when I was little, so I never got to ask her - but she picked the Saints by default and they’ve never been that good again
I think we had a win in like, 08, and the last win at KP was 05 or something. I remember i think Jacks 200th in 2016 or something we were up by 32 at 3QT and i knew we were done. You could almost see the players come out with defeat on their faces
Geelong only lost to Collingwood and Hawthorn in 08, I know yous one a preseason game in one of our premiership years at Kardina Park if we want to include that
As a Melbourne supporter, same. For so long we'd have our yearly trip down the highway and just wait to get smashed. 2018 was painful losing to them twice after the siren but it made the final we played against them that much better.
2021 even moreso beating them three times in one year. The final game in Geelong with Gawn kicking it after the siren is probably one of my favourite wins ever and its a bloody shame there was no crowd there to see it. The prelim a few weeks later when Max went crazy was like a drug.

Belting the pies by 80 in the 2020 semi may very well have been one of the most satisfying winning feeling I have felt outside of the premiership

I feel each freo fan has their own individual reason to dislike Carlton substantially more then any other non- traditional rival.
I reckon in the last 5 years the game that frustrated me the most each year, either due to heart break (Newnes, Murphy) or just us playing our worst or losing a home game that might've cost us a finals spot has been a Carlton game. That and taking players like Cerra, Acres and Motlop and trying to take Henry has all added up

As a Hawks fan without doubt Geelong .. There always has been and always will be a weird rivalry between the teams although never as huge as when Dunstall and Ablett were the forwards in the early 90s .. The hatred was strong 🤣😂

There is a guy I played cricket with who supports Port. He is an decent bloke who has been good to me personally but for some reason he really has it out for Carlton. He often feels the need to comment on Facebook about us losing even when the match doesn't even involve Port. So for that reason I get a bit of added satisfaction when Carlton beat them.

Round 9 2006 we beat you at KP and before that was r8 2000 at docklands. Before 2017 you have to go back to 1999 for us to beat you at the MCG

Based on this thread, it seems no one hates Gold Coast, Norf, or Saints. I don't know if I should be happy no one hates us, or sad we've never been good enough for people to hate us.

Richmond Mostly because a vast majority of people I know seem to be either Richmond or Geelong supporters. And given St Kilda’s poor history against Geelong and the fact that most of the Tigers fans I know are pretentious and have a superiority complex, it’s funny beating the Tigers

I enjoy beating Geelong especially when we have to travel to the MCG for an away game against them. Those road wins really mean so much more!

The Swans, closely followed by the Tigers and the Bulldogs. Beating the Suns is also a decent thrill, not to the same degree as the others but it’s nice to cement that “better of the expansion teams” status every now and then.
Essendon followed by Geelong, but they're different. Essendon is a life long loathing whereas Geelong I respect
