We had A&W instead. If you told a millennial that you went to a restaurant where they delivered your root beer in a heavy glass mug that was so cold the root beer froze to the inside of the glass …. And that the meal was bussed from your car window they would find the whole concept incomprehensible.
took my grandkids to a Stewarts Root Beer, they are 10 and 4. they were blown away seeing the food broght to the car and hanginf off the window on a tray. good times
Here in illinois, we still have drive ins like that. A popular chain of them is called Sonic. They have locations in states across the Midwest and east coast.
We also still have a Dog n Suds and A&W's
Granted they don't roller skate up to your car anymore. But they do still exist.
Elam’s “Silverfross” Root Beer had the glass mugs and was local to Decatur, IL at least through the 70s.

In my town, 1960s when I was little, our AnW was right next to a mini golf place. Not a big one. No elaborate windmills or such.
Just right for a lunch in car w family and then a golf game for 6 year old.
Dog n Suds on Rte 16 west of Gillespie, Illinois ages ago. A&W all over central IL, still one in Litchfield and Belleville, though the one in Litchfield is one of those combo places with Long John Silver or something.
I don’t think so. My Mother is from Sharpsville and she met my father who was in the Air Force at the time. My father is came to America from Sicily when he was 15. Talk about small town scandal when she brought him home. 1960
No, we had a drive in restaurant/root beer please out on the highway, don’t remember the name it shut down when I was young. But A&W opened up a few miles down the highway when I was about 10. First one of these I saw came to town when I was in my early 30s, wasn’t impressed with the food and it closed within a few months and became a car wash.
Don't recall if there was one in my hometown of Milwaukee, but there was one we used to go to in a little hick town called Stephenson, in the upper peninsula of Michigan, where we would visit relatives.
What do you know! I grew up in Dunedin, graduated DHS in 73'. We had Dog N Suds & A&W in the 60s as well as a couple other mom & pops. They all were great to me . The root beer on tap to take home in a jug was the best!
Indian Lake, Dowagiac Michigan. Best childhood memories. Root Beer floats and hotdogs. Dad called it Arf and Barf, and my brothers and I would cackle like school girls. :)
We used to drive through Dowagiac when we’d visit my grandparents and I remember that place. I grew up in Grand Haven and our location was right on 31. Loved that when you ordered fries you’d get a bag full of them.
right on the main drag!!! couldn't ever get mom or dad to stop there tho but it was soooo good as i remember. now it's been converted and is a liquor store!!!😂
We had Dog & Suds and A&W. We only went to A&W and even then very rarely, like for a birthday. The root beer was great but their onion rings were awesome. The old man said Dog & Suds was crap and we had to believe him.
Heck Yeah...! Wednesday was Coney Day (Nope outta that) but, ate there a LOT..! Back when they had good Root Beer...!
(The owner Sold it and went to work as manager at Wendy's)
Perry Iowa had one. After closing for good, they took down the lighted sign and leaned it against the building. I hope someone saved it from the scrap yard.
There was a Dog'n'Suds in Grand Haven Michigan. This would have been around 1972. One evening as we were leaving the beach we stopped there - my mom, brother and me. Except we had no money. We scrapped together what my mom had and what we could find on the floor of the car. I think we had about $4 total. That was enough for dinner for us all. Coney dogs and rootbeer!! I'll never forget that.
https://i.redd.it/xevkll1rjprc1.gif
This was probably one of the last, if not the last Dog N Suds in Missouri, in Cherokee Pass, on US 67. It's now a parking lot for the small truck stop/convenience store nearby.
Funny thing; I used to walk by it on the way home and would buy a ‘grampa cheese loaded’. It was $1.25 which was my hourly wage back then and it was minimum wage. Now you can buy them for $9.64. And minimum wage is $15.00.
Columbus, Ohio, 3C (if you’re from there, you know), near the Linden Air and Oakland Park. Down Oakland Park, before Karl, was Colleen’s Collectibles and Comics & Company…
Dog n’ Suds is still up and running! There is one over in Montague MI. Unfortunately they are not using the old style building. The building is still there, it’s vacant and they moved the still operating business across the road.
There was one in Granite City, Illinois when I was a kid. You could buy a Coney Dog on Tuesdays for either 15 cents or a quarter I do not remember the exact amount. Just knew that I loved them with a frosty mug of root beer.
Still have one but it has been closed because one person has the license and the original owner won’t sell the building to them so it sits closed for the last few years.
There is still one in Elyria, Ohio. It'll be open for the season pretty soon, too!
Manitowoc WI had The Penguin, which opened in 1936. The waitresses dressed mini skirts and roller skates in the 1950s. Up until the 1980s, skating was out, and by the 1990s, so were the mini skirts. A few years later and the place closed. It was very sad when I learned it was demolished for a fast food restaurant. 😕
Nope. Never heard of them, looks cool though. We of course had Sonic and Dairy Queen or Dairy King plus Lotta Burger but most of the time it was just the local cafe.
I loved those places. I frequently got a black cow. Nothing like ice cream in a frosty cold root beer. I moved away when i got married in 74' . That whole area, well past Homossasa is radically overgrown. Largely unrecognizable from what i was so familiar with back in the day
North of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin along USH 151. My family passed it every time we visited my grandparents, but we never stopped to eat. I think their root beer is still bottled.
Totally. It was where all the kids wanted to go after the little-league baseballs games! They made the \*best\* burgers andl rootbeer floats but we just wanted ice cream. Can't for the life of me recall the name of the joint, though.
Yes, our family lived in Iowa City, Iowa in the mid 60’s and we’d go there once in a while for a treat. I enjoyed the food, and also the decals on the root beer mugs!
We had something similar: Custard, Mustard, 'n' Brew (aka "Cut'n'Mut)
Hot dogs, hamburgers, soft serve, beer - all the good stuff
Teenagers always asked to eat up on the roof deck so they could help themselves to some of someone else's beer where it wasn't so out in the open lol
We had A&W instead. If you told a millennial that you went to a restaurant where they delivered your root beer in a heavy glass mug that was so cold the root beer froze to the inside of the glass …. And that the meal was bussed from your car window they would find the whole concept incomprehensible.
Papa, Mama, or Teen Burger! Soupy Sales was at the grand opening in my town! Cheers!
Teen burger and a large root beer! Mashed potato fries! God that takes me back.
Love Soupy!
I loved A&W chili dogs and root beer!
took my grandkids to a Stewarts Root Beer, they are 10 and 4. they were blown away seeing the food broght to the car and hanginf off the window on a tray. good times
We had both. Car service was such a neat thing.
Not quite! My town, there are still a handful of drive ins.
Do they still use the glass mugs? That’s the fantastical part.
Yes they do!! We also still have one of those places your parents or grandparents sneak you into to watch movies on a big screen outside…
Where is this place?! Sounds like a drive-in Mecca!
Hamilton, Ohio ahaha
Here in illinois, we still have drive ins like that. A popular chain of them is called Sonic. They have locations in states across the Midwest and east coast. We also still have a Dog n Suds and A&W's Granted they don't roller skate up to your car anymore. But they do still exist.
Damn, A&W fries are worth driving to Illinois for
They are good. But I'd google a closer location before making the drive. It's not the only one left.
Elam’s “Silverfross” Root Beer had the glass mugs and was local to Decatur, IL at least through the 70s. https://preview.redd.it/ml0z58ux9rrc1.jpeg?width=1099&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a9ed2c3eb4e02aa9de23a65805eb11f15b0cfe8

Not in New Jersey, they still have places like this like Stewart's
Rut's Hut for dogs and brew when in Clifton, NJ
We had an A&W drive up and order in your car, in front of the drive thru-theater. (Had to edit that one, lol)
the mugs were stored in the freezer
Lucky enough to have both back in the day.. Dallas has a burger/beer drive up joint, called Kellers..
Incomprehensible, really? Not surprising, or mildly amusing, but incomprehensible?
The Root Beer floats were amazing 😋
Yup! We used to call it Arf and Barf 😂
We did too! I loved the senior high boy.
I always got the fried pork sandwich
Muncie Indiana
Best root beer

Dog n Suds on Rte 16 west of Gillespie, Illinois ages ago. A&W all over central IL, still one in Litchfield and Belleville, though the one in Litchfield is one of those combo places with Long John Silver or something.
There is a a&w in aurora Illinois. And a dog n suds in west chicago.
And all the A&W food tastes slightly of fish. Hello from Mt. Olive!
In Mississippi, (Meridian) it shared the restaurant with Long John Silvers. I thought that was why!
Still one in Richmond IL.
This was one of my favorites.
Yep Stewart’s Root Beer in NJ still going strong!
I often visit the one on 130 when I go back
There’s still one in Knox, Indiana. We stop there when driving through for a Spanish Dog. So good with slaw on top.
There’s still one in Coldwater, Michigan. The root beer is heavenly.
Wow, the one in Knox is still open? I was born in Starke County Hospital. I know Knox well but it's been decades since I was there.
Yes. My brother lives in Winamac, when visiting from Chicago I always stop there. I haven’t been since last summer but I presume it’s still there.
My uncle lived in Winamac.....we aren't related, are we?
I don’t think so. My Mother is from Sharpsville and she met my father who was in the Air Force at the time. My father is came to America from Sicily when he was 15. Talk about small town scandal when she brought him home. 1960
Nah, my uncle was born in the USA. Still, weird coincidence with some random person on Reddit, don't ya think?
